Shinedown frontman Brent Smith picks the five songs that have defined the US arena metallers' career so far
Transcript
00:00This is harder than I thought it would be.
00:06Hey, what's going on, everyone?
00:08I'm Brent from the band Shinedown.
00:09I'm at Download currently with Metal Hammer,
00:12and these are the five songs that would define our career,
00:16which I thought I would never say.
00:17If I had to go with the first one, not in any particular order,
00:21but probably from the first album,
00:2445 was a song that was pretty influential,
00:28if I think back 20 years now.
00:37With everything that's gone on in the band,
00:39that was kind of a very big focal point for us.
00:41The next one would probably be,
00:44I would have to say Sound of Madness.
00:53I've been asked before about that particular song
00:56in regards to if there was only one song
00:58that you could present to kind of describe
01:01what Shinedown is, what would it be?
01:02And I said, if I can only have one,
01:04it'd be the Sound of Madness.
01:05From the same record, I would say Second Chance.
01:14That's really the song that kind of opened the doors
01:17for a much larger audience.
01:20I've always said that Shinedown is everyone's band,
01:23but that song in particular really grew
01:26a large, large audience for us still to this day.
01:29So what is that?
01:30That's three.
01:31And then I would probably say the new song,
01:35even though it is brand new, 365,
01:37which means a great deal to us.
01:46We often talk about we're proud of the last 20 years,
01:49but we're focused on the next 20 years.
01:51So that's a great representation of what we do.
01:55And then if I had to sum it up with one more song,
01:59this is harder than I thought it would be.
02:01Since we're in the UK, we're at Download,
02:03I'm going to go with a song that wasn't a single,
02:06but it's a song called Brilliant.
02:08It's actually the last song on the Attention Attention album.
02:18It was actually inspired by the UK audience
02:21when we were on tour with Iron Maiden.
02:25We did 42 shows with them in 2017.
02:28We did all of the UK and Central Europe with them.
02:31And then when we came back to the States,
02:32we were in the middle of recording the album Attention Attention.
02:34We wrote Brilliant as a really a tribute to the UK audience.
02:40So those would be the five that I would say.
