00:00I was invited to LA to run a TV show, but really I was going to LA to meet my
00:05greatest guru,
00:07who would be the man who would become my ex-husband. I thought he was the perfect one,
00:12so I knew there were red flags. I felt a discomfort, but I went right into that role
00:18of appeasing and taking care of, and it was okay until we had a son. You know,
00:24if the refrigerator was empty, he'd be screaming. My life got smaller and smaller. I was exhausted.
00:31Finally, I just had enough and Googled the word narcissist, and it shocked me, and he said,
00:37I'm hiring an attorney, and I'm filing for divorce. I was moved to write a book, so I finally sat
00:43down
00:43and I wrote the first, which is Toxic Family. When I wrote the book Toxic Family, I just told my
00:51truth,
00:51and I've made peace with my family. When I went to the therapist, I said my life is totally out
00:58of
00:58control and completely unmanageable, but once I could really understand, my mother, my grandfather,
01:05who also abused me, was beaten by his stepmother almost to the point of death. So you start to
01:13understand and have compassion for what's come before. What I'd say if you're ensconced in a toxic
01:22family dynamic or a relationship, just first be as loving as you possibly can with yourself.
