The Humble Beginnings of H&M_ How a Sewing Machine Sparked a Fashion Empire
Transcript
00:00Now let's go back to the beginning. The H&M story started in the small town of Vesterres in Sweden.
00:05In 1938, Erling Persson was just an ordinary man working an ordinary job.
00:10But everything changed when he got married and his wife gave him an extraordinary gift,
00:14a sewing machine. He had no idea what he was going to do with it, but he knew he needed
00:19to
00:19come up with a plan soon. You see, he and his wife were unexactly doing well financially,
00:24and he needed to find a way to make some extra money. So he came up with a simple idea.
00:28Using his new sewing machine, he would buy cheap fabrics and then sew them together to make new
00:33products which he could sell for a profit. And just like that, H&M was born. Of course,
00:39it wasn't called H&M yet. At first, he simply called it Hens, which is Swedish for hers.
00:45This is because he mainly sold women's products. Back then, women were the primary consumers of
00:50clothing and men didn't really care about fashion or looking good. At least that's what Erling thought.
00:55Anyway, he started off slow, selling his products door to door. But it didn't take long for word
01:00to spread about as high quality and affordable products.
