Angèle pulled up to Genius to break down her hit “What You Want.” The Belgian singer-songwriter translates and dives deep into her lyrics, how her collaboration with Justice came together, her love for blending French and English, and the moment she played the song for her parents, only to forget some of its more suggestive lines, plus more gems along the way!

00:00I'm a huge fan of Justiz since I was 12, I think, so getting to hear my voice and my
00:06song with their
00:07production and you can really see that it's a song of theirs too, that's what really drives me crazy.
00:19So I wrote this song by myself and I wanted to go through the production and then I got a
00:25little
00:26stuck. I met Justiz because I went to see their show in Brussels and when we met we kind of
00:32had a
00:32good talk and I was like would you guys want to come to the studio and listen to a few
00:36of my demos
00:37and then I thought of maybe sending them what you want and then yeah they just worked on the
00:41production and just sent me a crazy version of it which I immediately fell in love with.
01:07I also love to mix English and French. It's a fun little game because these two languages really
01:14don't get along usually, it's completely different. I started with like what you want. I don't really
01:21know how I would have done that in French. It would have been different but I also love to
01:27bring a little bit of French just as a little reminder.
01:41Another mistake, it's all of your makeup on my mouth. You tell me that it turns you on so we'll
01:48sewed it in the shower. Just imagine that I played this song to my parents the first time
01:52and we were like eating and I was like play and of course after months of working on the song
01:57and
01:57just forgetting a little bit of like the actual lyrics you just listen to it in a different way.
02:03But then I played it to my parents and they were like I was like yep but you know whatever.
02:08I love that you can feel the desire and feel the tension with someone and a little and how much
02:14you
02:15can be playful with someone but also always like making it funny and kind of like we're playing here.
02:30It goes with from time to time I love to try to switch up the roles and then it's like
02:37at my feet.
02:38And so that's the part where I'm a little less like playful but maybe I'm more in charge.
02:42It's super fun to hear you in this like empowering mode and it's super fun and it fits well so
02:49I just kept it.
03:09The second verse of the song goes another silly thing another nonsense.
03:15That's not exactly what I said. I love when you talk in real life but be quiet when I touch
03:21you.
03:21Because it's like a kind of like spoken wordy verse which I love to play with it allows me to
03:28go in a
03:28more unhinged lyric which was super fun because singing that part would have been a little more
03:35difficult because it would have added a lot of like seriousness and when you just speak you can
03:40say whatever you want and you can add a little bit of like the nuance also gets added themselves I
03:45think.
03:47I really love to have justice for the song. It was really fun to have their perspective and to
03:53see how much they catched exactly the vibe that I wanted to bring. I really loved how we
04:00managed to blend my very like airy and kind of like fragile vocal to their very deep and intense production.
