Halle made her way to Genius to break down her song “bite your lip.” The multi-talented artist lets us into her world a bit, sharing why she’s all about passion, how she’s learning to tune out the noise, the relief that washed over her once the song was finally done, and more!

00:00Bite Your Lip represents so many different feelings of vulnerability, of this achingness,
00:07this heartbreak that's not really a heartbreak because it's not yet, and this hopefulness
00:11that you just are holding on to.
00:20It was really beautiful because me and Ray came up with these sort of dark, grungy chords
00:27that we felt could hold the lyrics, what we were talking about.
00:30What does it feel like when it gets really hard, but there's still like a twinkle of hope.
00:35I personally, I love listening to songs that take me on a journey that like build and like
00:41at the end of the song, I'm crying and like, I love that feeling when you get chills.
00:45It's kind of really sexy and fun to start off quiet and then like build up.
00:57It's two people that are misunderstanding each other.
01:12It's almost kind of the feeling of like tape being over your mouth and you're like trying
01:17to get it out, but you don't know how.
01:19I really wanted to make that clear that like that pain, that angst, but wanting to get it
01:24out was very important to paint the picture, I guess, to start off the story.
01:47It was very important for me to speak about how I don't want to lose myself in you and trying to
01:53make this work because I think that's something that's relatable to all of us who have been
01:58in relationships.
01:59Sometimes you pour too much of yourself and you kind of lose your way.
02:03You kind of lose what you were happy about yourself and need to pour some of that love
02:08into you and like feed yourself.
02:23I feel like you can see it.
02:52Like when you say, don't bite your lip, bite mine.
02:55Like you could see that you're saying, okay, just kiss me.
02:58Like, let's get this over with.
02:59Just kiss me, bite my lip.
03:01Don't sign off, sign in.
03:03Don't hold back because I need those arms.
03:05Like I need those arms to hold me.
03:07Like I think it's kind of really self-explanatory.
03:10It's just like, don't give up yet.
03:12Like we're, we're on like the teetering line, but we can reel this back in.
03:17We can do it.
03:18And yeah, I really like the images that those lyrics create because you can see it.
03:23And that's my favorite type of song.
03:24And you can see like the story along the way.
03:28You don't have to be so, so tough all the time.
03:39You know this woman here loves you so much, but she can't read your mind.
03:46Whenever you are communicating, like in a relationship sometimes for the other person
03:52to hear you, you have to like tell them the good things about themselves so that they can
03:57kind of let their guard down to understand what you're saying.
04:01Like it's very maternal.
04:02Like you don't have to be so tough all the time.
04:04Like this woman here loves you so much.
04:06She can't read your mind.
04:07Like it's coming from a very soft approach,
04:11like using honey to get what you want in a way.
04:14I'm really big on passion.
04:36Like I'm a super passionate person.
04:38I want to, I love doing that instead of like the silent approach of walking away.
04:42Sometimes you just, you need to just get in each other's faces and tell each other how you feel.
04:48And that's where a lot of healing can happen.
04:51Yeah.
04:51That passion.
04:52Sometimes when you are, when you're so deep in something, you have to kind of like block out whatever noise that you hear.
05:18It's not going to make sense to some people and it's your right.
05:21It's your flow.
05:22It's your journey that you're supposed to go through.
05:24And when you come out of that, the art that you create is like what's amazing from it.
05:30And sometimes you just got to let people go through their own journey and like watch them and then see how they kind of become a butterfly at the end of it.
05:37That was what the kind of last line was about was kind of blocking out the noise because in this industry, being young, a black creative, it's like, that's something that you have to deal with on a regular basis.
05:49And I think as I grow in my career, I'm learning which things to listen to, which things to not.
05:55It's just a special, a special journey to go on and learn about yourself and life.
06:01And it adds fuel to your creativity and it's all worthwhile in the end, basically.
06:06Oh, but I swear that I'm yours forever, as long as you're mine.
06:18Don't let the fuck shit persuade us to give up.
06:29Don't let the fuck shit persuade us to give up.
06:39Like don't let the noise persuade us to give up.
06:42I feel like sometimes when you have something really special, you're just supposed to like protect it.
06:47That's why now in my life, I'm moving forward and like, I don't tell anybody about anything that's like super special to me now.
06:54I'm like, it's mine.
06:55I'm protecting it.
06:55It's amazing.
06:56And you have to find ways to protect your sanity and the things that are special to you and personal to you.
07:02Sometimes being artists, it's like people think that you owe them every part of your life.
07:07And it's like, well, I owe you some of it.
07:08You can listen to it in the album.
07:10But other than that, nah.
07:14Whenever you make something that's very honest to you and vulnerable and special,
07:19you feel a sense of relief.
07:21You're letting it go.
07:22That's your way of healing.
07:23It's your way of therapy.
07:25And you would hope that it meets the right people.
