05:34although it hasn't run for 18 years
05:37but it is fully functional
05:39my parents never owned a car
05:42other than for a brief period
05:43when I was very young
05:45they bought an Austin 7
05:46and they couldn't afford to keep it going
05:48so that's in their honour
05:51I've had it for about 38 years
05:53and it's been in the diamond loop for 18
05:58Andrew's partner, Vi
06:00is less enamoured than he is
06:02when I first saw it, it was unkept
06:05so my job has been to keep it clean
06:10especially after all the frolics that goes on in it
06:16drinking, eating, legs hanging out the roof
06:20Andrew was once in that car with nearly 12 women
06:24who were 20 years onwards
06:26and all there was was legs all over the place
06:30loved every minute of it
06:31I can't remember that at all
06:34we're moving house
06:35and if I moved it into the garage in my new house
06:39I think it would sit there with a blanket over it
06:42with a sheet over it
06:43and it would be a great shame
06:44somebody will want to get a lot of pleasure
06:47and enjoyment from it
06:48so it's time for it to go
06:50it's served its purpose in our family
06:53time for Mr Austin to go somewhere else
06:57you'll be glad to see its tiny little tailpipe going down that drive
07:02I will
07:14A familiar face has returned to HQ
07:18a 1968 Aston Martin DBS
07:21which failed to sell in an auction back in March 2021
07:2695,000 are you all done 95
07:29unfortunately I've got to pass on that one
07:30we need more
07:35I remember the car well
07:36and it's a lovely lovely example
07:39and it went out more or less exactly as it's come back in
07:42I think it's probably fair to say
07:44they haven't really caught on
07:47with desirability as yet
07:49it's the poor man's classic Aston
07:52let's be fair
07:53they're not a DB5
07:54they're not a DB6 are they
07:55they're not in that league
07:56but I think interest is growing
07:59I know not everyone likes green
08:01but it does suit it
08:03it really does
08:04interior's superb
08:06steering wheel's lovely
08:07dashboard's lovely
08:08there's keeping cars and selling cars
08:11and in my opinion that's a keeping car
08:14and in Matthews and Stalwart's Andy
08:17Paul has a DBS mastermind on hand
08:20this car is a foot wider than it's supposed to be
08:23is that right?
08:24it is wider
08:25you know it seems so wide is it
08:26yeah yeah they've got some stance haven't they
08:28I'm glad we've found an expert
08:30so am I
08:31by chance
08:33may I have one of these
08:37I've still got the photographs on me
08:38and I can show you
08:39no no no no
08:40it's a family show
08:41no we don't
08:41we don't
08:42we don't
08:45well I'll have a bet with you Paul anyway
08:46you say what have you got to say
08:48I think it'll do between 90 and 100
08:50right I think it'll be
08:5385 and 90
08:54there you go
08:55I'll have a five on it
09:15are you head of signs then
09:18yes I'm just going to think of some more signs to put up in a minute
09:22yeah I know bloody signs
09:24yeah
09:24there are all sorts of reasons why people flock to bickering to pick up a classic car
09:29I've always wanted a VW a vintage VW
09:33and this is my new car hopefully
09:36it's all a chrome works great
09:38colour
09:39colour spot on
09:40nice colour
09:41it's a really nice colour
09:42I've already got a name for it
09:43Bugsy
09:48I'm looking to buy a first classic
09:49so going all that big
09:51you can't beat that smell
09:52the vintage
09:53oil and leather smell together
09:55I thought that was you
09:57it will be what I've said
09:58one very British patrician motor
10:04has attracted a couple of serious pre-auction admirers
10:07Steve Jagger and Mark Oyston
10:10plan on using it on an intrepid adventure
10:13a 3,000 mile rally from South Africa to Tanzania
10:17the whole rally takes just over three weeks
10:20you know from start to finish
10:22I think it's about 50 competitors in all
10:25in all different vehicles
10:27in all walks of life
10:28different countries
10:29different countries yeah
10:32their mark of choice is inspired by a classic American rally film
10:36the cannonball run back in the early 80s
10:40which obviously Mark can remember but I'm too young
10:42there was the sheik in there who did it in a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow
10:48but they're too fragile
10:50and so we felt that this spiritual successor to that car
10:54would be the Bentley
10:55because it's still got the big 6.75 litre engine
10:59but with a couple of turbos whacked on it
11:01so that's the thinking
11:03and our team name will be the Great Shakes
11:09hopefully we'll get from here to be in one piece
11:11so you seem pretty dead set on doing this
11:14oh definitely yeah
11:14yeah yeah
11:15we booked in
11:16it's booked?
11:17it's booked
11:18and you've not even got the bloody car
11:19we haven't got a car yet
11:21and it's in July we need to crack on with it
11:33the Matthewsons have a very particular expertise
11:37in extracting vehicles from unusual and tricky situations
11:40oh blimey there
11:42yeah
11:44all right
11:45today Derek is faced with one of the oddest
11:48to remove a 1938 Austin 7
11:51from a Scottish dining room
11:54hey
11:55we're here
11:56look at that
11:59lovely area

12:46and
12:47more toys came in
12:48they used to get in behind the wheel
12:50and they were pretending to be driving
12:52on holidays and things like that
12:53yeah
12:53I can imagine it
12:54yeah
12:55well it's amazing
12:57next up
12:58extricating the Austin
12:59from its resting spot of 18 years

16:00out of that motor car
16:01haven't they
16:01people have just got this thing
16:03that they cost a lot of money to run
16:04service

16:06they think that they have to go to Bentley
16:08you don't
16:09go to a reputable independent
16:11and get the same sort of service
16:13that you would get out of a
16:14anyone with a VW
16:16Audi
16:17whatever it might be
16:21look at that in there

17:11actually gorgeous
17:13the Austin 7
17:15Derek removed from a Scottish dining room

17:21not that it's ultra valuable
17:23but
17:23it's a nice straight car
17:26and it'll sell well
17:28yeah a bit of right
17:29that's it
17:30yeah
17:32yeah

18:0016
18:00thank you
18:01there you go
18:06roll number 116
18:0896
18:08D
18:09A
18:09Aston Martin
18:10D
18:10B
18:10S
18:11everyone that comes on site
18:13looks at it
18:14everyone that comes on site
18:16talks about it
18:17everyone that comes on site
18:19would like to own it
18:20but the fact of the matter is

18:36I'll take one
18:37looks really nice
18:38even on the photograph
18:39two years to go

18:45very provisional
18:4690,000 pound
18:48provisional 90,000
18:4990,000
18:5090,000
18:54you're hoping aren't you
18:55that somebody somewhere
18:56is really keen on the car
18:57and he's trying to get
18:58their finances in place
18:59you don't necessarily
19:00have that sort of money
19:01sat in a bank account
19:02do you
19:03so
19:04it's right to give it
19:05a few opportunities
19:06to sell
19:07sadly
19:07it would appear
19:08it hasn't sold
19:09but we'll see
19:10never know
19:11in the end
19:12a deal couldn't be reached
19:14and the Aston Martin
19:15went back to its owner
19:16again
19:23every month
19:24dozens of motorbikes
19:26arrived for sale
19:26some look like
19:28they'd just come off
19:28the racetrack
19:29others
19:30are relics
19:31from a bygone age
19:35well
19:37unusual entry
19:38quite a rare bit of kit
19:39really
19:39said to be an original
19:41genuine police bike
19:42and apparently
19:43the owner of it
19:44rode it for about
19:45ten years
19:46when he was in the force
19:47so it's got some
19:48pretty serious
19:50provenance with it
19:51basically it's a
19:52Speed Twin
19:52a 5TA Speed Twin
19:54from about
19:551960-61
19:58bathtub's all standard
19:59of course
20:00quite a
20:01sought after bike
20:02a repro radio
20:04they tell me
20:04you know
20:04it looks original
20:05and genuine
20:06doesn't it
20:06but they tell me
20:07it's actually
20:07some sort of repro
20:08so don't hold me
20:09to that
20:09absolutely
20:10yeah
20:12old fashioned
20:13MOBA
20:13brilliant
20:14I think it's great
20:16someone's going to
20:17have an immense
20:17amount of fun
20:18with this
20:19and we did try
20:20earlier on
20:21to maybe just see
20:22if she'd kick over
20:23she might go
20:27how about that
20:29not a lot wrong
20:30with that is there
20:31what a nice little
20:32machine
20:35on a bonny little
20:36bike
20:59brakes are stiff
21:01and we can't push you
21:07a surprisingly hefty
21:09triumph
21:10vitesse
21:10needs shifting
21:11the young
21:12matthewsons
21:13have press ganged
21:14their pal
21:14Neil
21:14into service
21:15why's he going back in
21:17he's going on
21:18calling Chris
21:18look don't mess
21:20our system up
21:21Chris
21:21that's when they've got
21:22forced labour
21:22involved in it
21:23so how did you get
21:24right into that
21:25like
21:25I wanted to borrow the
21:26forklift on Friday
21:29so they'll do me a favour
21:31I'll do them a favour
21:32right
21:33let's move on
21:43what have we got here then
21:44we've got an Austin Big 7
21:46which believe it or not
21:48is a bigger version
21:49than the Austin 7
21:51so the Austin 7
21:53is probably the only
21:55or one of the only
21:56cars out there
21:57that is sort of
21:58bucking the trend
21:59with regard to
22:00this period of production
22:02being saleable or not
22:04there are signs
22:06that a new generation
22:08is starting to show
22:10interest
22:11but
22:12they have got to be
22:14absolutely lovely
22:15and out of the box
22:16I mean that little car there
22:17will probably witness
22:19four or five thousand pounds
22:21which is crazy
22:22isn't it really
22:23sort of the price
22:24of a bathroom suite
22:25isn't it almost
22:27it wants to go to
22:28a lovely little village
22:29somewhere doesn't it
22:29and it wants to
22:31take the kids to school
22:32on the morning
22:33in the summer
22:34and pick them up
22:35of an afternoon
22:36and it wants the Labrador
22:37sat on the back seat
22:38and it would just
22:39once basically
22:40you just want to go back
22:41to James Herriot
22:43don't you
22:45and just pretend
22:45for a while
22:46that we are back
22:47in a place
22:48that was so much
22:49easier and simpler
22:50and just generally
22:51nicer I think
22:53nostalgia eh
22:54it's a powerful thing
22:54isn't it
23:00457 is the Austin 7
23:02now these are
23:03little cuties
23:03aren't they

33:18to Africa
33:25six and three quarter litres
33:27of twin turbo V8
33:30450 brake horsepower
33:31absolutely nuts
33:33in something that looks like the Royal Barge
33:36it's too heavy really for what we're doing
33:38silly amounts of power
33:40but nearly a three ton car
33:42by the sound
33:42we've got all of the kit on it
33:44but look at that

34:39that really does
34:41turbo charge you down that memory lane
34:43it really does
34:46there's no point whatsoever
34:47in spending a lot of money restoring the car
34:49none whatsoever
34:49it's just
34:51there still are lots of us out there
34:53that just want

36:40the landscape
36:42the animals
36:43just the wildness really
36:47in East Yorkshire
36:49Steve Jagger and Mark Oyston
36:51are reminiscing about their amazing trip to Africa
36:53with the Bentley R-Nage
36:57that's the set-off of the journey there
37:01gosh
37:02yeah I'm feeling quite emotional actually
37:05it was good
37:06bit of dodgy camera work there
37:08can I just point out it was my camera work
37:12my camera work's pretty good
37:15the trip
37:16which Steve and Mark used to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support
37:19didn't exactly work out as planned
37:21when we shipped the car across
37:24well basically the shipping agent messed up
37:26and the car arrived late
37:28so we decided to abort the actual rally
37:31but we did a trip from Johannesburg
37:34up the Indian Ocean side
37:36so we stopped at quite a few places along that way
37:39up to Mozambique
37:40and then cut back into the interior of the country
37:42next year we'll do the full route
37:45but there were some very long driving days
37:48which will be similar to what we'll be doing
37:50there'll just be more of them
37:51we had some real adventures
37:53it was fantastic
37:54and the car performed really really well
37:56the raised suspension
37:58modified the exhaust slightly
37:59so it just gives a little bit more raw
38:01a bit more hung
38:02put the roof tent on the top
38:04full size spare wheel on the rear
38:05it was like it was made for the off-road conditions
38:08it just handled it really well
38:10I mean it doesn't rev particularly high the engine
38:13so the things we're doing
38:14it would just change its level of purr
38:17we met some amazing awesome people on our trips
38:21and of course everywhere we went
38:23and everywhere we were parked
38:24the people had the crowds around us
38:26because they'd never seen a car like that before
38:34but the highlight of any trip to this part of the world
38:37is the wildlife
38:42oh yes this was our elephant incident
38:45it looked further away on the cam footage
38:48than it certainly felt at the time
38:50there's road signs with elephants squashing cars and things
38:55it's like you don't get many of those in East Yorkshire
39:03yeah you'll never forget those memories
39:05and its vistas in your mind
39:07it's fantastic
39:08that was beautiful
39:10yeah it was
39:10absolutely
39:11Indian Ocean and the beaches were beautiful
39:15the Bentleys still in Africa in storage
39:18waiting for the next instalment
39:19of Steve and Mark's adventures
39:21but this initial trip
39:23was a vital piece of preparation
39:25for the rally proper
39:26still nervous
39:28still things to do
39:29a lot of the planning that went into this year's
39:32has just moved forwards into next year's
39:35because what I have learned about Mark
39:37is he snores like a pig roaming in porridge
39:40and it's definitely a job for separate rooms
39:45mainly separate buildings
39:58I like oddball things
40:00I like strange cars
40:02and cars that nobody wanted
40:04or that there was loads of
40:06there's none now
40:07you know
40:07I like different things
40:10in Carlisle
40:11John Percival
40:12the new owner of the now re-sprayed Viva
40:14is introducing his son
40:15Austin
40:16to the joys of Vauxhall
40:18confined to the driveway
40:20for now
40:23he's seven months old
40:24as you can see
40:26he kind of likes it
40:27I think
40:29don't you
40:31can you remember sitting on your parents' knee
40:33doing this
40:33definitely yeah
40:34I definitely can
40:37things like this
40:38it sticks in your mind
40:40you teach your kids
40:40things that you enjoy
40:42so they enjoy them
40:44you know
40:44he was crying a minute ago
40:46you know
40:47and look at him now
40:48he's more than happy
40:49just to be bouncing up and down in the car
40:53yeah
40:53no
40:54very impressed with it
40:55aren't you son
41:00this Viva isn't John's first rodeo
41:02no no
41:04I know this is a brave thing to say
41:06but
41:06I'm going to say
41:07well over six or seven hundred cars
41:09in my lifetime
41:10sorry
41:11six or seven hundred cars
41:13yeah
41:13I used to go down the local auction
41:16at about 12 year old
41:18or 13 year old
41:19and if there was a car that didn't sell
41:22I used to give
41:2240, 50 quid for it
41:24if there's something I think
41:26that's cheap
41:26I'll buy it
41:27and that was a thousand pound
41:29that little car
41:30it was a non-runner
41:31I'd just take a gamble
41:33you know
41:36and it paid off
41:42it drives lovely to be honest
41:44the suspension
41:45the steering's so light
41:47and yeah
41:48it's lovely
41:50it sounds very vain
41:51but it's nice to have people
41:53turn around and look
41:54and smile
41:55it just makes their day really
41:57and it makes my day
41:59it's lovely
42:05I'll be totally open and honest
42:08I've suffered from depression
42:10anxiety
42:11and I still do
42:12and I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia
42:16three years ago
42:17it's an awful disease
42:19condition
42:20whatever you want to call it
42:21I suppose
42:22before I knew I had it
42:24I self-medicated with alcohol
42:26now I don't drink at all
42:29as sad as this sounds
42:30I get up in the morning
42:32I see the car
42:33and whatever I've done to it
42:36the day before
42:37I'm proud of that
42:39all you've got to do
42:40is focus on something
42:42and life's good
42:43basically
42:44so the car
42:45has helped
42:47certainly you
42:48a little bit of a difficult
42:49point in life
42:50and it will bring a lot of joy
42:52to Austin as well
42:53once in future years
42:55the car that saved his dad
42:57yeah
42:58you could say that
43:02when he's five
43:03six years old
43:04old enough to
43:05appreciate and understand
43:06the car
43:07I think he'll love it
43:08and there'll be something
43:09we can do together on it
43:10as well
43:11and that must mean the world
43:12oh it does
43:13yeah
43:14I mean
43:14Austin means the world
43:16my partner means the world to me
43:17but the car
43:19is a close second

43:44and that must mean the world
43:49and that must mean the world
43:50and that must mean the world
43:54and that must mean the world
