02:48Located under an hour's drive from Poitiers,
02:52Alison and Zion snapped up the place for £580,000 in 2021
02:59and set their hearts on running a luxury wedding business.
03:04We are so happy to have you in our place.
03:07Last time we saw them...
03:09Oh, yuck. 40-year-old cobwebs.
03:12..they transformed their chapel from dumping ground to stunning sanctuary.
03:21..and hosted a very special 60th Wedding Vow renewal service.
03:28What joy and peace must fill your hearts this day
03:32as you stand before Christ after 60 years together.
03:36It feels like, you know, this is what it's all about.
03:38Now, with the wedding season fast approaching,
03:42they're on to their next project.
03:46We're doing a bedroom suite on our second floor.
03:50This one has to be magnificent.
03:52It's the biggest room up there.
03:53We're knocking all the walls down
03:55and making this glorious bedroom and an en-suite bathroom.
03:58We don't have a lift,
04:00so when people get up to that second floor,
04:02it's got to be worth arriving.
04:06So, we're going to start on this one.
04:09The plan is to knock three small rooms
04:12into one epic bedroom suite.
04:16It's not going to hit anything.
04:18Oh, you're getting there.
04:22In under 15 minutes, the first wall is down.
04:28I'm going to start...
04:29Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
04:32When you hit, you can damage the beam.
04:35So, let's take this with the chisels gently.
04:37In their new suite,
04:39Alison and Zion hope to strip back to the structural bones.
04:44Looks like it's a new beam.
04:46It's amazing how it's been kept all these years.
04:53Meanwhile, Alison's on a treasure hunt of her own.
04:57That's really old.
04:58That's even underneath the old shelf that was in there.
05:01We don't have any records of the chateau
05:04in terms of its history.
05:06We're rebuilding its history
05:08whilst we're uncovering its history at the same time.
05:10So, that, for me, is really exciting.
05:12But not all their discoveries are quite so positive.
05:17Yeah, you can see the outside.
05:20Really?
05:21Oh, God.
05:23If you can see daylight, it's not a good omen.
05:28Obviously, if there is daylight, you need to stop it.
05:31That means it's going to be wind, cold.
05:34So, all have to be insulated.
05:36No rest for the wicked in this place.
05:39You must be very wicked.
05:40The job seems to be growing by the minute.
05:44And with the walls to insulate
05:46and the design and decor still to plan,
05:50Alison and Zion just need to hope
05:52there are no more nasty surprises in store.
06:02Tucked away in the L'Ethipée de Loire
06:05in Western France
06:07stands the majestic Chateau de la Verne.
06:12This 19th-century chateau
06:15boasts 14 rooms,
06:18a private chapel,
06:20and five acres of parkland.
06:25It's home to married couple
06:27Claire and Lionel,
06:29both former photographers
06:31who swapped life in London
06:33Go, Margot, go!
06:35for a French chateau adventure
06:37in 2022.
06:40I have to say,
06:41it wasn't my dream
06:43to have a chateau.
06:44A large house would have been nice.
06:47I'm afraid it was me.
06:49I've always wanted a chateau.
06:50My DIY experience is somewhat limited.
06:53I like to call myself
06:55the reluctant DIYer.
06:57Quite good at ordering people around.
07:00That's not really DIY, though, is it?
07:03That's do you why.
07:07I'm a bit more adventurous with the DIY.
07:10I will definitely have a go at anything.
07:12I am really hoping that Lionel
07:14will discover a love for DIY
07:16and will get really stuck in
07:17and help me with all the difficult jobs.
07:19I think it might happen sometimes.
07:23No, I'm...
07:24No, I don't think so.
07:25LAUGHTER
07:33Located just half an hour's drive
07:36from New York,
07:38Lionel and Claire
07:40bought the chateau
07:41for £820,000
07:43with grand plans
07:45to renovate it
07:46into a spectacular family home.
07:50but, so far,
07:51have only completed the salon.
07:55Today,
07:55they're taking on
07:56a new guest suite.
07:59This room has traditionally been
08:01the room that's dedicated
08:03to Claire's parents.
08:06I want to make it really nice for them.
08:08At the moment,
08:09it's got this tired old wallpaper
08:10because we just haven't done
08:11anything in here yet.
08:12so I want it to be
08:14a bit of a surprise
08:14for everybody
08:15and make it really posh,
08:17really lovely
08:17for them to come and stay.
08:19It's going to be posh.
08:19Yeah, it's going to be posh.
08:20Yeah, I think so.
08:22Before they can start work,
08:24the space needs to be cleared.
08:28Oh, you're so helpful, Margot.
08:32Do you want a hand?
08:33That's going to be heavy.
08:35Hey!
08:36There we go.
08:38Are you all right?
08:39All right.
08:40Where are we going with this?
08:41Just lean it against here.
08:45We're going to need
08:46a stepladder here, darling.
08:47Uh, well, you might need
08:48a stepladder.
08:49Oh!
08:50All right, I can reach out.
08:51You're such a wit.
08:54OK, ready?
08:55All right.
08:59Ready is a short person
09:01we'll ever be.
09:04I don't need a stepladder.
09:07All right.
09:09So, good warning.
09:13There.
09:14Get off it.
09:18Beautiful.
09:19Well done.
09:19Well done.
09:20Thank you.
09:20That little diplomatic effort.
09:22Well done.
09:22With the room now clear,
09:24Lionel and Claire can set about
09:26stripping off the old, dated wallpaper.
09:30And it's a first for reluctant DIYer, Lionel.
09:36Honestly, you're like one of those people
09:39who unwraps their Christmas presents
09:40really carefully to save the paper.
09:42Do you want, I'm trying to get as much...
09:45I'm trying to get as much off the wall.
09:48You know, like, so if I go like that, right,
09:50the bit that's still stuck properly
09:52will remain on the wall.
09:53If I go gently, gently, gently like that,
09:55then I'll get more off, won't I?
09:57It's quite easy.
10:00Right, so what you're doing there, right,
10:03is what I'm trying to avoid, right?
10:05So you're leaving all of that.
10:07No, no, no, no, I'm not being funny.
10:09I'm being serious.
10:10So are you not...
10:13Forget it.
10:14You're suddenly the expert, aren't you?
10:16So it's basically just, like,
10:18throw caution to the wind.
10:22And just have fun, right?
10:25Like this.
10:30Ooh, come on, you can do it.
10:33Ah, you see?
10:35That's exactly what I've done with this.
10:38Oh, fuck.
10:42Hey, that's a good bit.
10:43Oh, that was a good one.
10:45There is an extraordinary amount
10:47of satisfaction in doing this.
10:53I'll remember you said that for the next room
10:54and then you can come and help me with it.
10:56I can't tell you how enjoyable it was
10:58to remove wallpaper.
11:00Up until now, it's been Claire's job
11:03and now I love it.
11:06Who are you?
11:08What have you done with my husband?
11:09You're not my husband.
11:12It's been a successful start,
11:14but with some serious demolition
11:17next on the to-do list,
11:19will Lionel's journey of DIY discovery continue?
11:28Coming up, the pressure's on
11:31to deliver two dream weddings.
11:34So we just need to make sure
11:35that the chefs are providing the perfect food,
11:39Sasha does a fantastic job on the flowers.
11:41Yeah, and to transform the courtyard
11:43to the beautiful wedding day setting.
11:45and Alison and Zion hit a stumbling block.
11:49I don't think it's going to work.
11:50Back to the drawing board.
11:52Back to the drawing board.
11:59In the wine-growing countryside
12:02of the Languedoc in southern France
12:04stands the magnificent 19th century
12:07Château du Puy-et-Prin.
12:13It comes with seven acres
12:15and boasts 39 sumptuous rooms.
12:20It's home to Tim, a photographer,
12:23and Sasha, a former fashion designer,
12:27who bought the place for £390,000 in 2003.
12:34Their thriving wedding business,
12:36built up over two decades,
12:38is now being run by daughter Lily
12:41and son-in-law Luke.
12:44We're so proud.
12:46Proud of this wonderful place we're living in.
12:48Now Lily and Luke are looking after the guests more
12:51and running the business side.
12:53It's given us the freedom
12:55to just make sure the visual aspect of everywhere,
13:00gardens, courtyard,
13:02has a unique visibility and quality about it.
13:09Located close to the Mediterranean coast,
13:12their mission during the winter months
13:14has been to restore the Château Courtyard,
13:18starting with the ingenious transformation
13:21of a hidden bricked-up window
13:24into a magical arched vision
13:27bearing Sasha's glowing artwork.
13:30The courtyard is what Sasha and I fell in love with
13:34when we first came to see the property.
13:36It's got a magic of its own.
13:38We've just tried to amplify that feeling,
13:42that ambience that we felt 24 years ago.
13:47Oh, my poor patio, what have you done to it?
13:51Last time we saw them,
13:52they removed the old cracked tiles
13:55from a raised patio terrace
13:57on one side of the courtyard
14:01and re-laid it with pristine stone.
14:06Then, the courtyard slabs were cleaned, painted
14:11and have now been re-sealed with protective resin
14:15ready for wedding season.
14:18It's been a long winter.
14:19It's now spring, the sun's shining
14:21and we've done numerous projects in the courtyard
14:24that are looking good, we're proud of
14:27and we're looking forward to the guests enjoying them.
14:32With one spring betrothal already under their belts,
14:36they're facing a busy few days
14:38with back-to-back weddings scheduled.
14:42Then you've got the choice of orange or red?
14:44No, that's it, those go round the back.
14:46The first is for American couple, Tiara and Luke.
14:51And in her workshop,
14:53Sasha is getting to grips
14:54with their tricky floral colour scheme.
14:58I think it's because we have blue shutters.
15:01Blue is always so popular
15:04and it's so difficult to come by.
15:08But anyway, it's fine.
15:10This has got to be the best job in the world.
15:12Meanwhile, in the new courtyard,
15:16Lily is welcoming the bride and groom.
15:19Hi.
15:20Hi.
15:21How are you guys?
15:22Nice to meet you.
15:23And bride Tiara cannot wait
15:26to check out Sasha's efforts.
15:29Perfect.
15:31Oh, Tiara.
15:32Hi.
15:33Lovely.
15:34Nice to meet you.
15:36Welcome, welcome to the flower heaven.
15:39It smells so good, isn't it?
15:43So, we've got...
15:45This is going to be your wedding arch.
15:47OK.
15:48Look at these beautiful delphiniums.
15:51They're so pretty.
15:52Yeah.
15:53I think the lilac and the blue is just really beautiful.
15:57And it does, it makes it pop.
16:00While Sasha cracks on,
16:02Lily and Luke take the couple through a rehearsal
16:05against a backdrop of the chateau's very own vineyard.
16:11The more natural you are,
16:13the best photos you're going to get.
16:14So, don't try and force anything.
16:16We are very excited for tomorrow.
16:20So, we just need to make sure
16:22that the chefs are providing the perfect food.
16:26Sasha does a fantastic job on the flowers.
16:28Yeah.
16:28And to transform the courtyard
16:30to the beautiful wedding day setting.
16:33The revamped courtyard is looking its best
16:36after all of its pre-season pampering.
16:39But can the family pull off the perfect alfresco event?
16:51350 miles north,
16:54Alison and Zion's second-floor guest suite renovation
16:58is underway.
17:00Ta-da!
17:02With all the demolition done,
17:05the couple are turning their attention
17:07to the en-suite bathroom.
17:10Basin.
17:12And then shower.
17:13Shower.
17:15Alison and Zion have bought a marble-topped unit
17:18at a brocante,
17:20but now need to test it out in the space.
17:24I can't remember how much we paid for it,
17:25but it wouldn't have been more than about 30 euros.
17:29That's quite a large piece of furniture.
17:33And the other thing is,
17:34I'm not sure it's going to look right
17:35with the tap like that,
17:38because that's going to have to come through here,
17:41which is a shame.
17:54I don't think it's going to work.
17:58Back to the drawing board.
18:00Back to the drawing board.
18:03Designers, eh?
18:04While Zion tackles the plasterboarding,
18:10downstairs,
18:12Alison is concentrating
18:13on the finer details.
18:19In a bedroom of the style that we're trying to achieve,
18:22we need something really grand,
18:24and these chandeliers are going to be just the biscuit.
18:30You've got to be so careful with it.
18:33Look at that.
18:34It's beautiful, isn't it?
18:37The two cut glass chandeliers
18:39are currently in pieces,
18:41and before they can be reassembled,
18:44decades of dust
18:45need to be removed.
18:49So every single one of these
18:50needs to be cleaned.
18:52that these are going to shine
18:53like the sun
18:54when they're finished.
18:56This chandelier,
18:57well, these chandeliers,
18:58this is one of two,
18:59have a bit of history,
19:00and what's really nice
19:01is that it's family history,
19:03because the gentleman
19:04who gave them to us
19:06was a very old family friend,
19:08and he said,
19:09I think I might have something
19:11that would suit your chateau.
19:13And he told us a story
19:14about this beautiful old house
19:16that he and his wife had done up.
19:17He had some idea
19:19of what it is
19:19where the challenges
19:20we're facing here at the chateau
19:22and sent Zeon up in the attic,
19:24and we came down
19:25with these amazing chandeliers.
19:27It just makes it really personal,
19:29makes the chateau feel like a home
19:31rather than a business,
19:32and that's special,
19:33because it is our home,
19:34and all the things we do here
19:36we do with love,
19:37which matters,
19:38matters a lot.
19:40Alison and Zeon
19:41are pouring heart and soul
19:43into the bedroom suite renovation,
19:46but it's a painstaking task,
19:49and there is still
19:50a long way to go.
19:56Just 100 miles away,
19:59in their new guest bedroom suite,
20:02Lionel and Claire
20:03are stepping up
20:04their DIY skills.
20:06I am dreading this.
20:08This is making a hole in the wall
20:10in order to get through
20:12to the loo
20:12that's on the other side,
20:13but this is a bit bigger
20:15than what we've done before,
20:16so...
20:16This is a doorway hole.
20:18This is a doorway hole.
20:19And I'm going to do it,
20:20and one hopes that
20:21I'm not going to lose any limbs.
20:23Please don't.
20:24Well, I'll try not to.
20:25That would really slow us down.
20:26The plan
20:27is to create
20:28a new en suite
20:29by connecting
20:31the toilet next door
20:32to the bedroom.
20:35Not my chosen colour.
20:49It's a bit difficult
20:50because I can't actually
20:51see the laser line
20:52as I'm cutting it.
20:53So there's a lot
20:54of guessing going on.
20:59For a man who doesn't like DIY,
21:01he's doing very, very well.
21:05Next,
21:06Lionel needs to drill
21:07marking holes
21:09all the way through.
21:14You're going,
21:15oh, my goodness,
21:15it actually looks like
21:16it might be in the right spot.
21:17It's a miracle.
21:19Getting to grips
21:20with the angle grinder,
21:23Lionel is leaning
21:25into his new DIY skills.
21:31When I'm chopping trees,
21:34Claire goes all wobbly on me
21:36because she, you know,
21:37she likes a good lumberjack.
21:39Is that right, darling?
21:42No, come on.
21:43Get back to work.
21:48But unfortunately,
21:50it's not long
21:51before the enclosed,
21:53dust-filled space
21:54proves too much.
21:56I can't breathe,
21:58I can't see,
21:59I can't hear.
22:00It's crazy.
22:01People do this for fun.
22:03I feel butch, though.
22:08Time to see
22:09if all Lionel's hard work
22:11has paid off.
22:13Get all you got.
22:18Oh, yeah.
22:19Oh, yeah, yeah.
22:22Shall I go around
22:23the other side
22:23and do the channel
22:25tunnel hand chase?
22:29Yes!
22:30Yes!
22:34Victory!
22:38After a long day's DIYing,
22:40the couple decide
22:41to finish on a high.
22:44We've made a breakthrough.
22:45We've got through the wall.
22:46I thought we might
22:47get more done today,
22:48but at least we've got
22:49a bit through.
22:49We can see that it's possible.
22:53It's definitely possible.
22:56It's definitely possible.
22:56And once the wall is down,
22:58Lionel and Claire
22:59will need to brace themselves
23:01for a first foray
23:03into plumbing.
23:11Still to come,
23:12Alison and Zion
23:14tackle an elaborate
23:15ceiling design.
23:17It's like
23:18a series of boxes
23:19and where does the
23:20coving fit
23:21in relation to that.
23:23And Lionel and Claire
23:24have toilet trouble.
23:27Oh!
23:30Oh!
23:30Oh!
23:30Oh!
23:32Oh!
23:33Oh!
23:33Oh!
23:36Oh!
23:38Oh!
23:39Anderson and Zion
23:39have made huge progress
23:41with their second floor
23:43guest suite.
23:4486 steps later.
23:46The walls are now
23:48fully insulated
23:49and today's task
23:51is to start
23:52on their grand plans
23:53for the ceiling.
23:55We don't want to have
23:56just coving
23:58and because we're going
23:59to have this
24:00coffered ceiling
24:01and we want to
24:03combine the two together.
24:05We're taking the language
24:06of the chateau
24:07from the dining room
24:08downstairs
24:08which is a very
24:09grand room
24:10and we're trying
24:10to bring it up here
24:11because we love
24:12that old
24:13very old
24:14chateau
24:15sort of
24:15ceiling style.
24:17Coffered ceilings
24:18are a classic
24:19architectural detail
24:21consisting of a series
24:22of rectangular square
24:24or octagonal
24:253D grids.
24:27It's like
24:28a series of boxes
24:29that we're putting
24:30on the
24:31ceiling
24:32of the bedroom
24:32and to get
24:33the boxes
24:34against the wall
24:35you have to plan
24:36to have a
24:38like this is the box
24:39if you like
24:40and then this
24:41has to fit
24:41underneath it
24:42to finish off
24:43the decoration
24:44of the wall
24:44and that's what
24:45we're deciding
24:46to do now
24:46how do we
24:47adjust the depth
24:48of the boxes
24:49and where does
24:50the coving fit
24:51in relation to that
24:52so it's quite a
24:54challenge to get it
24:55right
24:56how far
24:57do you want it
24:57there
24:57yeah
25:01helped by their
25:02two on-site
25:03labourers
25:04Zion gets to
25:06work
25:06cut it
25:071m60
25:16it's too good
25:17to be true
25:20meanwhile
25:21Alison
25:22has her own
25:23beautifying
25:24challenge
25:24these are the
25:26original roof
25:26structure
25:29this is working
25:30really well
25:32so a very weak
25:33acid of some
25:34sort
25:36it just
25:37takes off
25:37the white
25:38colouring
25:41look at the
25:42colour of that
25:42wood
25:42isn't that
25:43gorgeous
25:44goldy
25:45yeah
25:47it's really
25:48lovely
25:48I mean
25:48this is
25:49structure
25:50that's
25:511872
25:51this was put
25:52in
25:52can you
25:52believe it
25:55with all
25:56the boxing
25:56in place
25:59the decorative
26:00details
26:01can be added
26:02now we have
26:03to cut the
26:03coving
26:04and this
26:05is the
26:05challenge
26:06Zion has
26:07made the
26:08plaster coving
26:09himself
26:09and it's
26:11a fragile
26:11nerve-wracking
26:13process
26:14if you get
26:15this wrong
26:16you just
26:17have to
26:17work harder
26:18when it's
26:18up there
26:24is exactly
26:25what I
26:25wanted
26:27let's see
26:28if that's
26:28what she
26:28wanted
26:31that looks
26:32very nice
26:32doesn't it
26:33I got
26:34what I
26:35wanted
26:35the approval
26:41it's taken
26:42a lot
26:42of hard
26:43work
26:43but at
26:44last
26:45their dream
26:45of a
26:46decadent
26:47bedroom
26:47suite
26:47is properly
26:49on the
26:50horizon
26:50and now
26:51it's like
26:52you know
26:53you put
26:53your direction
26:54on the
26:54sat-nav
26:55and it's
26:57go

26:58the direction
26:59is there
26:59the sat-nav
27:00is working

27:03foot down
27:04now

27:05just got to
27:05get there
27:06now we've
27:07got to
27:07arrive

27:13to create
27:14and all
27:15the decorating
27:16to do
27:16it's a
27:18long
27:18and winding

27:32limit
27:33creating
27:34a new
27:34guest
27:35bedroom
27:35suite
27:35so far
27:37we've

27:40into
27:41the
27:41bathroom

27:46we are
27:47going to

28:17yeah
28:17that was
28:18fairly
28:18straightforward
28:19wasn't it
28:22goodbye
28:24is that
28:24working
28:24you know
28:25what I've
28:25got to do
28:26I've got to
28:26hold it
28:26under the
28:27rim
28:38I win
28:47I've
28:47photographed
28:47the royals
28:48and presidents
28:49of the
28:49United States
28:50I now
28:51have found
28:51myself

28:53toilet's out
28:54what next
28:55floor
28:56try and get
28:56rid of this
28:57floor
28:58just rip it

29:00too stuck
29:02thankfully
29:03there's a
29:03nice wooden
29:04floor under
29:04there
29:05under some
29:06lino
29:06but it
29:07doesn't seem
29:07like it's
29:07too badly
29:08stuck down
29:09so we
29:09might be
29:09in luck
29:15muscles

29:25the
29:25covering
29:26has come
29:26up
29:26reasonably
29:27easy
29:27but it
29:28seems
29:28to be
29:28stuck
29:29to
29:30an
29:30old
29:31lino
29:31floor
29:32covering
29:32which
29:33we're
29:34hoping
29:34is

29:37reveal
29:37the wooden
29:38floor
29:39underneath
29:45I don't
29:45think it
29:46is
29:46lino
29:46I think
29:46it's
29:47sort
29:47of
29:47like
29:47a
29:48self
29:48levelling
29:49type
29:49stuff
29:49because
29:50it's

29:51between
29:52the
29:52floorboards
29:53and
29:53hardened
29:53so it's
29:54a lot
29:54more
29:54difficult
29:55to get

30:08what's
30:09always

30:10is to
30:11discover
30:13something
30:14original
30:15and that
30:17is in
30:17good
30:17condition
30:18and the
30:19fact that
30:19I suppose
30:20that you
30:20you know
30:21that you've
30:21managed to
30:22do it
30:22yourself
30:22which is
30:23lovely
30:23and sort
30:23of
30:23reinstating

30:29fabric
30:29of
