00:00The End
00:38I love you, Nora.
00:40Do you love me?
00:42Oh, I don't know, Jack.
00:44You're the only girl I've dated in.
00:45In two months.
00:47We get along fine.
00:49You do love me, don't you?
00:51I think so, but I'll have to think about it.
01:05Hello, dear.
01:06Hello, Mom.
01:07Have a nice time?
01:08I'll say.
01:09Jack's awfully handsome and such a smooth dancer.
01:15Mom, how can I tell if...
01:17I mean, how did you know when you were in love with Dad?
01:22Oh.
01:24I've been in love several times before.
01:27I got so I couldn't recognize the symptoms.
01:30Several times?
01:31Mm-hmm.
01:32And each time I thought I'd found my Prince Charming.
01:36Most people fall in love quite a few times in their lives.
01:40Well, Vanny, how can you tell when you're really in love?
01:47Well, I'll have to think about that.
01:49Let's save it tomorrow, shall we?
01:50All right.
01:54Good night.
01:55Good night, dear.
02:00Most people fall in love quite a few times.
02:05I wonder if Jack knows that.
02:08I tell you, Bob, I haven't dated any girl but Nora in two months.
02:12We're really in love.
02:13Uh-huh.
02:14And you were really in love with Betty and Mary and Dallas and I don't know who else.
02:20And there'll be others, I suppose.
02:22Oh, no.
02:23That's over with.
02:24You know, Bob, Nora's the prettiest girl I've ever known.
02:28She's just as beautiful as...
02:30Beautiful?
02:30Beautiful.
02:31And you think that's all that matters?
02:33Oh, hurry up and get in bed, will ya?
02:38Bob, did you feel this way when you fell in love with Gene?
02:42Oh, look.
02:43I've felt that way lots of times.
02:46The trouble with you is, you don't seem to understand what love is really about.
02:51You young punks go to the movies a couple of times, do a little necking, and you think you're in
02:56love.
02:57I've never seen anything like it.
02:59All I wanted to do was ask.
03:01You don't have to get sore about it, do you?
03:03Oh, I'm sorry, Jack, but look at it this way.
03:07You just haven't been around enough to know what love really is.
03:10Believe me, it's nothing like the slush they give you in the movies.
03:18Well, I don't know, Bob.
03:20That's right, you don't know.
03:23Maybe you would understand better if...
03:26Say, I've got an idea.
03:28How'd you like to double date with Gene and me tomorrow night?
03:30Why, sure, Bob, that would be swell.
03:33Sure you wouldn't mind?
03:34Not if you let me get some sleep now.
03:36Good night.
03:37Good night.
03:44Oh, Jack, that sounds like loads of fun.
03:47Mm-hmm.
03:48See you tonight.
03:49Goodbye.
03:52Guess what, Mother?
03:53Jack and I are going on a double date with Jack's brother, Bob, and his girlfriend.
03:58They're engaged and so much in love.
04:00Gene has the most beautiful diamond.
04:02Oh, that's fine, dear.
04:04I've met Bob.
04:05I think he's awfully nice.
04:07I do, too.
04:09And speaking of love, weren't you and I going to talk about that today?
04:13Yes, we were.
04:14I've been thinking about your question, and...
04:16Well, suppose we look at these snapshots together, hmm?
04:20Snapshots?
04:21Mm-hmm.
04:21Well, what do they have to do with love?
04:24Oh, I was just thinking that they might help you to understand how your capacity for love
04:29grows and develops just as you grow and develop.
04:33Here.
04:34Look at this one.
04:35Oh, Mother, did you have to keep that?
04:39You know, in a way, you were in love even then.
04:43Every baby loves its parents for their care and protection.
04:48Of course, some people expect that care and protection all their lives.
04:52They never grow up.
04:54But it is a kind of love.
04:57Now, compare that with this picture.
05:00Oh, that's the boy who used to live next door.
05:04My, how he did love his teddy bear.
05:08Love?
05:10That's right.
05:11That's a kind of love, too.
05:14Possessiveness.
05:15A love for the things you own.
05:18Some of us never get over being possessive when we're in love, do we?
05:23You're beginning to understand.
05:27Now, here's a snap that shows how we learn to return love by doing things for others.
05:34Well, what about love of our friends?
05:36Isn't that a stage of love?
05:38Yes, I think it is.
05:40Here, look at this.
05:41Why, that's Betty and Ellen.
05:43And Ann.
05:44I took that picture with my first camera.
05:47Oh, I know.
05:48There was a time when I wouldn't look at anyone but my special friends.
05:52I guess that was a stage of love.
05:54Yes.
05:55And boys go through a similar stage.
05:57When they stick together in gangs and won't have anything to do with girls.
06:01We soon changed that.
06:04Now, let's see.
06:07Oh, do you remember this picture?
06:09The captain of the football team.
06:12That was two or three years ago.
06:15He never knew how much I loved him.
06:17I guess he never knew I existed at all.
06:20Well, we all go through crushes like that on teachers or sports stars or movie stars.
06:27Then, after a while, there's a stage that some people call puppy love.
06:34When it's Morris.
06:35I'd almost completely forgotten it.
06:37Remember how important it seemed at the time?
06:40I'll see.
06:41And it really was important as a part of learning how to love and be loved.
06:46I think I can tell puppy love.
06:48Oh, look.
06:49There's the couple who met at camp last summer.
06:52I certainly caught them.
06:54Yes.
06:55And that's another stage where the physical side of love dominates.
07:00Sometimes this is mistaken for mature love.
07:03But there's a difference.
07:05Mature love.
07:07That's a new way of thinking about it.
07:10How can you tell when love is mature?
07:13Well, mature love is more settled.
07:19Mature love has something of the other kind of love in it and something more.
07:25It's tender, unselfish, cooperative.
07:31When I get serious about somebody, Mom, I want to have that kind of love.
07:36That's a good idea, dear.
07:38And if you aren't sure, you can always ask yourself some questions.
07:44Are we really interested in the same things?
07:48Do we feel at ease together?
07:52Are we proud of each other?
07:55Do we agree on the basic things, such as religion, marriage, children, money, and so on?
08:02Thanks, Mother.
08:03I know that'll help.
08:05I hope so, dear.
08:13Are we really interested in the same things?
08:17Do we feel at ease together?
08:21Are we proud of each other?
08:24Are we agreed on basic things?
08:27I wonder.
08:29I'm going to watch Bob and Jean.
08:32See if they have a mature love.
08:49Jack, I'd like you to go in my house.
08:51I've never seen a Jackie storm in it before in my life.
08:53We've been here for quite some time.
08:56Oh, I'm having a wonderful time.
08:59I've never been here before.
09:00Oh, we're so glad you could come.
09:02This is one of our favorite spots.
09:04Yes, we sort of found it together, you might say, and we come here quite often.
09:08Oh, the real Chinese dishes are over here.
09:11Thanks, Bob.
09:12Oh, Bob, look what came today.
09:14What?
09:15Oh, the season tickets for our concert series.
09:18And guess what?
09:19Bob, you're going to have to sit through another concert by that young French pianist you didn't like.
09:25You mean the same one we saw last season?
09:27That's right.
09:27Maybe this year you'll agree with me that he has real talent.
09:30Oh, maybe.
09:31But only if he's improved.
09:33Oh, Bob.
09:33Bob, well, at least we'll have fun debating it.
09:38Do Bob and Gene have a mature love?
09:41Are they interested in the same thing?
09:46I'll say they are.
09:48They seem to have so many things to talk about and do together.
09:52Say, Nora, talking about music, have you heard the new recording of the Browns Violin Concerto?
09:58Well, no.
09:59Oh, I guess I never really learned to appreciate classical music.
10:06Are Jack and I interested in the same thing?
10:09I wonder.
10:11Another question Mom asked.
10:13Do we feel at ease with each other?
10:15You know, there's no telling what we'll get, but I'm wanting to take a chance if you are.
10:20Oh, that's the fun of it, Bob.
10:21What about some of this watercress salad?
10:23That's a fine idea.
10:25Bob and Gene certainly are at ease with each other.
10:30But what about us?
10:33Well, I've made up my mind.
10:35I'm going to have the leg of lamb.
10:36Oh, well, I thought it would be fun to try a Chinese dish.
10:40That's all right if you like that stuff.
10:42Me, I'll stick to the lamb.
10:44Oh, come on, Nora.
10:46Take a chance with us on the lobster Cantonese.
10:48Oh, I'd like that.
10:52No, I don't always feel at ease with Jack.
10:55He's so unpredictable.
10:56I guess I am, too.
10:58We don't really know each other.
11:00And Mom talks about being proud of each other.
11:04I wonder if I could ever be as proud of Jack as Gene is of Bob.
11:09Not right here and now, maybe.
11:11But he does have his point.
11:13When he gets out on that ball diamond, anybody would be proud of him.
11:18But I wonder if we'd ever agree on basic things.
11:21Jack, do you know who I saw today?
11:24I saw Bill Johnson and his wife.
11:26You know, they've got a fine pair of little kids.
11:28They dress them up like cowboys.
11:30Kids are such fun.
11:31Don't you think so, Nora?
11:32Well, I...
11:34Oh, here's the waiter with our soup.
11:38Children.
11:39Oh, we've never talked about things like that.
11:42Or religion, or marriage, or money.
11:45Bob and Gene really understand each other.
11:48They do have a mature love.
11:58Nora, I...
11:58Jean, I...
12:00What about our talk at the dance meeting?
12:02In the garden, you know.
12:04Well, I...
12:06I guess after seeing Bob and Gene...
12:10Well, I think that love,
12:12a real, material love,
12:14is more than I'd imagine.
12:16I guess so.
12:19On Bob and Gene, it looks all right, but...
12:22We're not ready for that kind of...
12:24attachment, are we?
12:26But we can still have a lot of fun, can't we?
12:29Sure we can.
12:31Would you like...
12:32How about going roller skating next Friday night?
12:35Oh, Jack, that's a wonderful idea.
12:37That's the kind of fun I like.
12:39What time?
12:40About 8.15.
12:42Oh, swell.
12:43I'll see you then, and thanks for this evening.
12:46Good night.
12:46Good night.
12:48Good night.
12:49Good night.
12:50Good night.
12:54Good night.
12:55Good night.
12:57Good night.
12:57Good night.
12:57Good night.
12:57Good night.
