00:00Apple has announced that Tim Cook will step down as CEO in September and this has been lamented as the
00:06end of an era,
00:07the closing act of a legend by many people in China who say that he will be greatly missed
00:12because few CEOs have amassed the sort of influence that he has.
00:17By shifting to contract manufacturing in the late 1990s, he's created thousands of jobs in China.
00:22He defended that strategy, saying it's not because of low-cost labor, but the quality and the scale of the
00:28workforce in China.
00:29And he was well-loved for his warmth, for his willingness to engage with people of all levels in China.
00:35He would visit universities. He made donations to Zhejiang University to support coding education and the next generation of Chinese
00:42developers.
00:43He would get to know the other tech titans in China and praise the tech and design ecosystem in China.
00:50In many ways, he was a cultural and a diplomatic ambassador for the U.S. as well,
00:55emerging as that important interlocutor between U.S. and China.
00:59His frequent direct contact with policymakers in both U.S. and China helped to secure those tariff exemptions
01:06for Apple suppliers and preventing that decoupling of the two economies.
01:12And so when John Turner steps up as CEO, he will have great shoes to fill.
