00:00Hey everybody, just a quick one before starting this video. This is a re-upload, well it's
00:05a pay per view I already covered but it's been completely re-edited seeing as the original
00:09got taken down and the channel received a lovely strike from WWE. I don't like re-uploads
00:15just as much as you guys but it's important to me to keep reliving the war, the entire
00:20reliving the war series available on YouTube. Remember too that any videos that get taken
00:25down from YouTube are made totally free on my Patreon page, you don't even need to
00:30enter an email address to watch these videos that have been taken down elsewhere, just visit
00:34the page, search for the video you're looking for and you'll be able to watch it. Thank
00:39you everyone and once again, here's WWF Summerslam 1999.
01:15Welcome to Summerslam, taking place on the 22nd of August 1999. Just under 17,500 are inside
01:22the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, an estimated 565,000 are watching on pay per
01:28view and everyone's here for an out of body experience when governor Jesse Ventura oversees
01:33a WWF title triple threat match featuring Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H and Mankind. Ventura's
01:39already throwing his weight around at the beginning of the pay per view, he warns China not to get
01:44involved while reminding Triple H to play nice and follow the rules, Hunter says he'll break
01:49every rule in the book if it means winning the WWF championship.
01:52Chris Jericho's also here tonight, looks like his new best friend Hart Finkel is going
01:57to serve as Chris' personal bag carrier, Jericho calls the Fink Harold while giving off
02:02about the ring announcer's tardiness and Chris reminds Fink that he's here to save everyone's
02:06job and it's all about making an impact. Chris is not going to compete at this pay per
02:11view, much to his legitimate dismay, but we will hear more from the Ayatollah a little
02:16later on.
02:21D'Lo Brown puts his European and Intercontinental championships up for grabs in our opening
02:25match against Jeff Jarrett, Debra comes out with Jeff wearing one of her revealing outfits
02:29that she usually saves for pay per view, but Double J thinks Debra should head back up the
02:34ramp seeing as, in Jeff's mind, Debra cost him the IC title in the first place, she goes
02:39back, she has a quick word with D'Lo and she then escorts the Eurocontinental champion
02:44into the ring in a move that makes Double J seethe. I don't know guys, I think she's
02:48going to screw D'Lo over and not in a good way. D'Lo impresses with a running forearm
02:53followed by two part slams, we also see his sit down powerbomb spot and D'Lo's another
02:57one of those guys that I found a new appreciation for through this reliving the war journey,
03:02I always knew he was good, but it's almost like rediscovering his work all over again.
03:07D'Lo goes upstairs and Jarrett stops him with an unorthodox but affective back elbow,
03:12and when the action goes to the outside Jarrett tells Debra to back off before D'Lo gets
03:16thrown into the ring steps. Jarrett finds himself getting clotheslined over the barrier but he
03:21goes back in control after a failed suplex attempt, we see Jeff's guitar sitting in the
03:25ring right here and you'd think the referee would get rid of it but no, it stays right
03:30where it is as Jeff pulls off a single arm DDT from the middle rope. Our match ends with
03:35a barrage of offence from the champion, we see his signature running powerbomb, a tilt-a-world
03:40sidewalk slam, a jumping sidekick and a body slam. D'Lo then hits his leg drop before
03:46looking for a senton, but Jeff moves out of the way and Debra gets on the apron. We think
03:51she's distracting Jeff but this was all part of the plan, Mark Henry appears and he takes
03:56the guitar away from Double J, he points to Jarrett and fans think Jeff's finally going
04:00to get what's coming to him, but Mark turns on his best friend and it's D'Lo who ends
04:05up getting hit with that guitar, I'm guessing Mark was getting tired of D'Lo looking out
04:09for him with all that healthy eating and exercise. Double J wins the Intercontinental and European
04:15titles after pinning D'Lo, he celebrates with Debra and Mark Henry, so the WWF's
04:20weird booking of Jarrett continues in 1999. Honestly, it feels like Jarrett's being punny
04:26sometimes judging by how he's been booked recently, but in saying that, he's also been given quite
04:30a lot of championship belts.
04:37We have tag team turmoil next, which is basically a winner stays on series of matches. The first
04:43match features Edge and Christian vs the Hardy Boys, and the winner of that match will face
04:47another duo until every tag team has been eliminated. Matt and Jeff are now part of the new brood,
04:52this was made official through episodes of Sunday Night Heat and not on Raw, and this is the best
04:57match of the whole tag team turmoil as these young cats continue making a name for themselves
05:02in WWF. These four guys excel in high risk double team offense right here, but in no time
05:07at all, Gangrel's getting involved and the Hardy Boys get an unfair advantage. Matt and
05:12Jeff team up to plant Christian on the mat and Jeff follows this up with an Arabian press
05:16moonsault. We then see poetry in motion from the hardies and Jeff stays on Christian with
05:21a swanton bomb. The break comes when Christian pulls off a double fallen inverted DDT and Edge comes
05:26in like a house on fire, and then we see a spot on the outside where Edge and Jeff run
05:31the
05:31barricade for a mid-air spear. It looks like Edge didn't get all of it though, which
05:35is a shame, the setup for the spot was great. Christian and Matt then pull off high risk
05:40moves to the outside, and the hardies get eliminated when Matt takes an electric chair facebuster
05:45from Edge followed by an elbow drop from Christian. These four work so so well together and I kinda
05:51wish these guys were just giving 15 minutes instead of other teams getting involved in this match.
05:55Next up we have Midian and Viscera. The corporate ministry were all told they could go their
06:00separate ways but these guys are clearly ride or die. Big Viscera did do a little damage but
06:06Midian thought he was a hardy boy and his devastating aerial offense didn't quite pay off. Viscera
06:11ends up taking a pretty rough bump when getting sent to the outside and these two heroes get
06:15eliminated following a spear to Midian. Next we've got Darren Drozdorf and Prince Albert. The highlight of this
06:22match was Albert's TKO to Edge, but these two get even less timed than Midian and Viscera. They get
06:27quickly eliminated when Edge delivers a downward spiral to Albert. Next we've got the acolytes,
06:33and if there's one team I don't want to win this thing, it's the acolytes. No disrespect at all,
06:38but their tag team title reigns have been a little flat and I really think we've got much more
06:43interest in tag teams in this bout. We do see a really, really intense chinlock from Farouk though,
06:49so completely forget about what I just said. Edge counters a dominator attempt with a DDT,
06:54Christian comes in with a few dropkicks before he and Edge send Farouk to the outside,
06:58legal man Bradshaw gets put down with a tornado DDT from Christian, but Bradshaw kicks out and the
07:03holly cousins show up a little too early. Unfortunately, Edge and Christian get eliminated when Christian
07:10takes a clothesline from hell, and so the final match of tag team turmoil features the acolytes
07:15and the hollies. Farouk takes a dropkick from Crash that doesn't really faze him, he fires right back
07:20with the dominator before Hardcore takes a double shoulder block, and we learn that the hollies still
07:25aren't really on the same page when Crash tags himself in only to take a clothesline from Farouk.
07:31This happens again when Hardcore tags himself back in, and when both hollies try to cover Farouk,
07:36they can come to an agreement and they end up beating the hell out of each other. This allows
07:40Farouk to plant Hardcore with a spinebuster, and the acolytes win tag team turmoil at Summerslam.
07:46Definitely not my first choice to get a tag team title shot tomorrow night on Raw, but this match
07:51showed us that the WWF tag team division was alive and well. The great thing is, it's about to get
07:56a
07:56whole lot better at the end of August. We see the unholy alliance entering the arena as the
08:06undertaker continues to shed away his dark and mysterious persona, and we also see Al Snow
08:11having a conversation with Pepper. Pepper's afraid the bossman's gonna snatch him after Snow's hardcore
08:16match tonight, but Al says everything's gonna be a-okay. Road Dogg comes out to announce that he's
08:22gonna get a hardcore title shot tomorrow night on Raw, but he gets interrupted by the Y2J countdown,
08:28the pyro goes off, break the walls down, plays in the arena, and Jerry goes seen standing on the
08:34lions den cage where he goes on to say he's very disappointed. He's disappointed that his first
08:40pay per view appearance is here at Summersham. Chris says the people here got scammed because the
08:46cards filled with boring wrestlers from top to bottom, and he goes on to say that Road Dogg's one of
08:51the
08:51most boring wrestlers on the WWF roster. According to Chris, no one cares about Road Dogg, instead of
08:58spelling his own name, Road Dogg should spell Lugubrious if he wants to impress Chris Jericho,
09:03DX sucks, Road Dogg sucks, Y2J's here to save the WWF, and Road Dogg, along with the other dweebs in
09:10the
09:10locker room, will never ever bore these people again. How does Road Dogg answer all this? By calling Chris a
09:17bitch and telling him to suck it. You know, I agree with Jericho, this was a terrible way to make
09:22your
09:22WWF pay per view debut and I'm sure many fans bought this show specifically to see what Chris would do,
09:28but backstage pettiness was getting in the way of good business and it's us fans who ended up paying
09:33for it. Well, us fans and Chris Jericho too. Road Dogg then joins the commentary team for our next
09:39match as Al Snow puts Pepper in his little pet carrier backstage, Snow then waits at the side of
09:46to make his entrance and Snow launches a pre-emptive strike to kick off this hardcore match.
09:51Road Dogg decides to go on location and he calls the action up close and personal,
09:55we go backstage where Bossman hits Snow with his pet carrier and Al replies by breaking a chalkboard
10:00over the champs head. The two then have a little fun beside a pepsi refrigerator, we go out to the
10:05mean streets of Minneapolis and we've seen this before haven't we? These two love fighting outside.
10:11Snow and Bossman cross the road where they end up fighting outside a bar,
10:15Road Dogg comments how the WWF are going to lose a lot of money due to this fight.
10:19We go into the bar where the brawl continues and Al tries to stuff a urinal block or a urinal
10:25cake
10:26into the boss man's mouth. Back out in the bar, Al breaks a bottle over the champs head before
10:31delivering a moonsault through a table. We then go to the pool tables where Bossman gets a little payback
10:36but he puts his hand on Road Dogg and so Jesse James smacks him with his own nightstick. Snow then
10:41hits
10:41this bossman in the balls with some balls and Al Snow wins this match in the Hardcore Championship.
10:47Snow runs back to the arena and he sees Stevie Richards and the blue meanie trying to electrocute
10:52pepper with a pair of jump cables, not even joking, so Al lays waste to both these guys before Summer
10:58Slam moves on. Stevie Richards hasn't been seen on Raw by the way, so good to see he's now part
11:03of the WWF.
11:09Ivory takes on Tory next and this is another rivalry that played out mainly on Sunday Night Heat.
11:15The crowd were silent for this one, except for that one moment where a feigned take it off chant
11:19could be heard in the arena. Things were pretty dull to start off to be honest but it did pick
11:24up a
11:24little when Ivory pulled off a big swing and Tory replied with an alley-oop powerbomb. Her method was
11:30a little different as, of course, pointed out by Jerry Lawler, but it was probably the best move of
11:35the match. The two then botches Sunset Flip and surprisingly, this is the move that ends the bout,
11:42absolutely dreadful. Luna Vachon saves Tory from getting stripped naked and Luna just seems to come
11:47and go these days, just when you think she's back, she ends up disappearing again.
11:51Later tonight, we're going to see Billy Gunn vs The Rock in a kiss my ass match, and Billy Gunn
11:57has a
11:57surprise in store for Rocky, a walkin talking surprise that Rock really couldn't care about. Rock's
12:03noticed how Michael Cole looks at him backstage and he wonders if Cole's a little kum si kum sa, and
12:09when
12:09Michael tries to answer, The Rock says it doesn't matter. Billy can bring all the surprises he wants,
12:15it's going to be no surprise when The Rock drops the people's elbow tonight at Summerslam.
12:40Alright, it's a lion's den match, but it's been given the blackman treatment. Weapons are placed
12:45around the cage as Steve looks to rid WWF of Ken Shomrock once and for all. The two warriors enter
12:51the cage, Steve produces the nunchucks, and game over Kenny boy, game over. Shomrock gets decimated by
12:57Sensei Blackman, and when Kenny boy tries to use the weapon, he shows a lot of inexperience. Shomrock
13:03failed nunchuck class at the Mavug dojo. Ken gets choked out, but he manages to fight back. He then
13:09throws the nunchucks out of the ring because he can't handle their awesomeness, and the whole lion's den
13:14shakes when Blackman gets whipped into a cage panel. This structure just can't contain Steve Blackman.
13:20Ken climbs up, he grabs a kendo stick, but Shomrock also failed kendo class as Blackman
13:25easily blocks the attack. More hard Irish whips follow before Blackman grabs his favourite weapon,
13:30the scream of sticks, and JR says Steve has a black heart as he goes to work on Kenny boy.
13:36Just you wait jim until the dark hadou takes over Sensei Blackman and he becomes an unstoppable
13:40killing machine. Ken runs up the cage to deliver a shoulder block, he then uses the cage for a little
13:46assistance during a back suplex, Big Stevie Cool fires back with a DDT, but Shomrock's not out yet.
13:53We see a power slam from the world's most dangerous man, Blackman replies with an enziguri,
13:58Blackman grabs a kendo stick, and Shomrock gets wrecked. A shot to the head seemingly knocks Shomrock
14:04out cold, and Blackman decides to not leave the cage and instead he's gonna continue this match.
14:09Yeah, according to the commentators, you have to leave the cage in order to win this one.
14:14The match ends with Ken waking up and Blackman takes a belly to belly,
14:18Ken then beats the crap out of Steve with that kendo stick,
14:21and after a few shots to the head, Blackman goes for a little nap because he's just so bored.
14:26The bell rings, Blackman's gnawing a deep sleep and he's dreaming about karate,
14:31so the referee awards the victory to Ken Shomrock, they just can't wake Master Blackman up.
14:47It's time to love her or leave her as Shane McMahon takes on Tess in a Greenwich street fight.
14:53Shane's none too pleased that his sister's been dating Tess, Tess has been deemed below the family,
14:58and so the boy wonders taking it upon himself to put an end to this budding relationship.
15:04Shane tried to break Tess's ankle, but when Stephanie tried to stop it, Shane unknowingly
15:08struck his own sister. Since then, Tess has taken out every member of the Mean Street
15:12posse all by himself, which really does show he's a man with no fear.
15:17On the August 15th episode of Sunday Night Heat, Shane challenged Tess to a street fight
15:21with the stipulation being that if Shane won, the couple would stop seeing each other,
15:25but if Tess wins, then he and Steph would both have Shane's blessing.
15:29Tess is the first to make his way to the ring, his ribs are taped up thanks to Shane
15:34launching an attack earlier tonight on Sunday Night Heat, Shane makes his entrance without
15:38his back up and gets right in the face of his opponent before some familiar music plays over the PA.
15:59Yes, the posse are here in Minneapolis and my god, don't they look dopper. Shane looks both surprised
16:05and delighted to see his boys as he leads them down to their front row seats. And hang on,
16:11there's a sofa in the front row, why would there be a couch sitting there if Shane didn't know his
16:16mates were here? I'm starting to think there might be some shenanigans afoot.
16:20Tess has had enough of all this dicking about and he goes to get Shane, he takes the boy wonder
16:25down on the outside before laying in the right hands, but Shane returns the favor when the two get
16:30inside the ropes. Tess is able to regain control and Shane gets caught in the lights with a big
16:35back body drop. Back on the outside, Shane gets introduced to the ring steps before getting
16:39thrown over the barricade, Tess then steals a fans drink and I do hope he refunded that poor lad,
16:45especially with the prices they charge at these events. Shane attempts a crossbody from the barricade,
16:50but he gets caught before getting slammed onto the floor. The posse look unconcerned and they have
16:55every right to be concerned as Tess picks up Shane and launches him right at the mean street badasses.
17:01The couch topples over and Stephanie McMahon looks on backstage with a big smile on her face. The
17:06posse do get some revenge by attacking Tess before throwing him back over the barricade,
17:11they then proceed to hand their boy a number of weapons including a framed portrait of the lads
17:15that ends up getting smashed over Tess's head. Back in the ring, Shane keeps control with a jumping
17:20back elbow before heading up top where he attempts a spiral tap, but Tess is able to roll out of
17:26the way,
17:26who knew that one of AJ Styles' influences would be Shane O'Mac. Anyway, Tess connects with a powerbomb,
17:32but Rodney distracts the referee, preventing Tess from getting the win. Shane dodges a big boot and
17:38the referee gets wiped out before the two head to the outside where the posse once again lay waste
17:42to Tess. They clear the Spanish announce table and they lay the big man on it, allowing Shane to land
17:48a
17:48picture-perfect elbow from the top through the table, McMahon Jr showing right here that he's ten times the
17:53ring performer that his dad is. Stephanie's shown looking concerned as the posse throw both Tess
17:59and Shane back in the ring so Shane can make the cover, Tess gets a shoulder up which gets a
18:03big pop
18:04from the crowd, so the posse once again try to interfere but this time it backfires as Pete Gass
18:09nails Shane in the head with a sign. Rodney then bops Tess with his cast but once again it doesn't
18:15get
18:15the job done as Tess kicks out, this is the cue for Patterson and Briscoe to come down the ringside
18:20to a massive ovation and the two stooges go to work on the mean street posse. Shane misses a shoulder
18:26charge in the corner, he gets caught out with a pump-handled slam, Tess heads up top and he scores
18:31with a big elbow drop for the pin and the win. Honestly, this match was fairly pained by the numbers
18:37despite the big elbow drop through the table, but dude, the crowd absolutely elevated this bout above and
18:43beyond what it was. They were alive for every single bit of it and when the referee made that three
18:49count,
18:49the roof nearly came off the arena. Stephanie then comes down to the ring and she and Tess embrace
18:55as JR says these two have a special relationship. Oh Jim, if you only knew my friend.
19:06Tag team title time as champions came in X-Pac to fend the gold against the team of Big Show
19:11and the Undertaker. X-Pac interfered in the Undertaker's WWF title match at fully loaded,
19:16costing the dead man his shot at regaining the championship. Taker would attack X-Pac the
19:20following night on Raw causing Kane to come out to his partner's aid, but this led to the Big Show
19:25coming down to help out Taker put a beating on both Kane and X-Pac. Two weeks later, X-Pac
19:30and Kane would
19:30defeat the Acolytes for the tag team titles which would lead to them both being on the receiving end of
19:35another beating from this new unholy alliance. All this sets up for our tag team match here tonight
19:41at Summerslam. Pac cuts a promo before the bout saying that he and Kane are closer than the Big
19:45Red Machine and the Deadman have ever been and that's what makes the challengers the underdogs
19:50here tonight. The champs are out first and Kane has some new ring attire which in my opinion is one
19:56of his best looks. The challengers are out next along with their absolutely god-awful entrance music
20:01as well as the not so god-awful Paul Bear. We have an immediate slugfest right off the bat as
20:07both
20:08teams lay in the right hand and X-Pac gets sent to the outside. Kane gets double teamed but he's
20:12able
20:13to fight back, he drops the deadman with a clothesline before sending the Big Show over the top to the
20:17floor. X-Pac then flies in with a crossbody to the undertaker but he's barely able to get a two
20:22count.
20:23The match finally settles down to Pac and Taker squaring off and predictable results ensue as the
20:31man, and the Big Red Machine scores with a number of shots in the corner before sending his brother
20:36over the top rope. Pac goes to the floor to get some of the undertaker but the deadman doesn't
20:40take too kindly to Pac's offer to suck it, resulting in Kidd taking a back elbow. Kane then saves
20:46Waltman from getting chokeslammed and our match resumes with Kane taken to the air to score with
20:50his top rope clothesline, but he telegraphs a backdrop and the phenom connects with his running DDT.
20:56Big Show then gets tagged in and we see a big boot followed by a big elbow drop. Big Show
21:00maintains his
21:01advantage. Kane then points out on commentary that he thought the unholy alliance would zone in on
21:06X-Pac during this match and I must say, I agree. Agreeing with Jerry Lawler, we truly have reached
21:13the point of no return. Kane delivers a few right hands but he's immediately cut off with a power
21:17slam from the world's largest athlete. Taker tags in and Kane continues to get wrecked until both men
21:22collide in the center of the ring following a double clothesline. X-Pac gets tagged in and he immediately
21:28floors the phenom with a spinning heel kick, he then looks to hit the ropes but he gets distracted by
21:33the Big Show, this allows Taker to score with a big right hand and Pac gets sent to the outside
21:38again.
21:39Big Show drops him across the barricade before Kane comes to the rescue,
21:42Pac then gets his little degenerate smashed into the ring post by the undertaker and the bollock
21:47base battery continues as Big Show hits a low blow back inside the ring. A bear hug then gets locked
21:53in for a while and when Pac eventually fights out he gets sent crashing to the map with a choke
21:57bomb,
21:58show looks for a chokeslam but Kane interferes leading to Pac hitting a low blow of his own on
22:03the big man. Here's one for the undertaker too, why not eh? Kane gets tagged in and he runs wild
22:09brother while Pac knocks Taker out of the ring with a spin kick, X-Pac gets tagged back in and
22:14he delivers
22:14a bronco buster but show recovers and he scores with a massive chokeslam. His one foot pin doesn't get the
22:20victory though and an angry undertaker tags himself in to deliver a tombstone power driver for the one,
22:26two, three. We have new tag team champions denied at Summerslam. This one was okay, considerably better than
22:33the majority of undertaker matches we've seen recently and I think that's because of the addition of X-Pac,
22:39the dynamic of the smaller man amidst these three giants worked well. Taker looks pissed off at Big Show
22:45following the bout, so we'll have to see how this relationship between the new tag team champions
22:49develops going forward.
22:55Oh boy, here we go, up next, The Rock takes on Billy Gunn in a kiss my ass match. Billy's
23:01escorted
23:02to the ring by his surprise from earlier and I guess now we'll get to see what all the fuss
23:06is about.
23:07Billy cuts a promo before the match saying that when he beats The Rock tonight,
23:11no bother big man, but when he beats Rock tonight, it won't be Billy's ass that Rocky kisses, no,
23:17it's hers. Billy then reveals that his big surprise is this lady and her generously proportioned behind.
23:24Truth be told, I never was a fan of these types of things, they always seem to be really mean
23:30-spirited
23:31just for the sake of being mean, you know? I mean if you're a wrestler then you're fair game,
23:35but just people in general, it's fucking weird. Rocky comes out to a great ovation and if there's one man
23:40who had a justified look on his face that all this was beneath him, that would be Rocky right here.
23:45Billy looks to gain the early advantage by jumping the people's champ right at the opening bell,
23:50he keeps Rock on the back foot by laying in a few shots in the corner,
23:53Rock returns the favour with some shots of his own and this culminates in a speedpunch that sends
23:57Billy over the top rope. On the outside, Billy gets introduced to the barricade before Rocky takes
24:02the arse enthusiast up to the entranceway, Billy gets thrown into the steel railings but he's able to do
24:08the same to Rocky before putting him down with a clothesline on the concrete floor. The two briefly
24:13brawl by the lions then before making their way back down the ringside where the great one gets
24:17launched into the ring steps. The two then fight at the announce table where King Billy Gunn gets
24:21crowned by the Rock before getting rehydrated with some water in the face, Billy, rightfully miffed by
24:27this disrespect, clocks Rock with the ring bell and I guess then that this is an ODQ match, yeah? The
24:33two
24:33finally get back in the ring as Billy targets Rocky's head before going for a straight up choke on the
24:38ropes. Rock scores with a clothesline but he's quickly cut off by a neckbreaker from badass and
24:43both men are now down. When they get to their feet, Billy stays in control with a jumping bulldog before
24:48scoring with a stinger splash, Billy takes a bit too much time jaw jacking the crowd and Rock explodes
24:53out of the corner with a clothesline before he drops Mr Gunn with a float over DDT. Both men are
24:58down
24:58once again as the camera focuses on Billy's lady friend at ringside, all whilst JR and King continue
25:04to bully the poor woman despite neither of them being model material themselves. Sorry, but it's true.
25:10Anyway, Rock scores with a swinging neckbreaker and a Samoan draw but his rock bottom attempt gets
25:14blocked and Billy scores with a famouser. Hell of a vertical leap on Billy by the way. Billy doesn't go
25:20for the cover though, he instead calls his woman into the ring, she stands in the corner and lifts her
25:25skirt to reveal the goods and as Billy goes to shove Rocky's face in her hole, Rocky's able to counter
25:30and Billy's hoisted by his own petard as he finds himself with, and I quote, his face in that large
25:36woman's ass. Rock then scores with a rock bottom and a people's elbow for the victory and I'm sure
25:42that Rocky isn't the only one who's glad that this feud is finally over with. We've all heard the story
25:48of how this rivalry killed Billy's push but look at Billy's run from King of the Ring right up to
25:52this
25:52moment. Yes, Rock did annihilate Billy on the mic and he did eventually win the feud, but Mr.
25:58Ass didn't do anything to elevate himself to the level that he was pushed to. To be fair,
26:02his boogin wasn't great either, but we've seen many superstars rise above bad boogin and still make
26:08names for themselves. It's not all that uncommon. The match itself was a bit dull, truth be told,
26:14a lot of shortcuts here, but it did pick up towards the end and the crowd seemed to like it,
26:18so what do I
26:19know? Main event time as Stone Cold Steve Austin defends his WWF championship in a triple threat
26:28match against Triple H in Mankind, with Jesse Ventura acting as the special guest referee.
26:33Back at fully loaded, Triple H defeated The Rock in a strap match to become the number one contender
26:38for the WWF title at Summerslam. On that same night, Austin retained the gold against The Undertaker in a
26:43first blood match, so the Summerslam main event was said to be Austin vs Triple H for the belt.
26:49On the August 9th episode of Raw, it was announced that seeing this main event was going to take
26:54place in Minneapolis, the WWF were going to bring in current governor of Minnesota and former pro
26:59wrestler and commentator Jesse the Body Ventura to serve as a special guest referee for the big match.
27:05On that same episode of Raw, Austin was attacked on a stairwell by an unknown assailant,
27:10and WWF commissioner Shawn Michaels accused the new number one contender of committing the assault.
27:16Michaels put Triple H in a triple threat match against Undertaker and Chyna for the game's number
27:20one contender status and during that match, Austin would interfere and help Chyna pick up the win.
27:26The next week, Triple H demanded a match against Chyna for the number one contendership, Chyna agreed
27:32and would subsequently win due to interference from a returning Mick Foley, Mankind would then take
27:37the number one contendership by beating Chyna and finally Shane McMahon made a match between
27:42Triple H and Mankind to see who would head to Summerslam to face Austin for the title.
27:47Both Shane and Shawn Michaels acted as referees and when both men counted the three off a double
27:52pinfall, it was announced that both men would head to Minneapolis to challenge for the WWF
27:57championship in a triple threat match.
28:03Jesus Christ, what a needlessly convoluted road to the Summerslam main event, but we've now reached
28:09the end of that road and it's time to see who's going to walk out of the target center with
28:13the
28:13richest prize in the industry. Our guest referee's out first and Jesse gets a hell of a pop from his
28:18fellow Minnesotans, he ingratiates himself further by saying that despite media outlets saying he's a
28:24disgrace for being at Summerslam, he's proud he was a wrestler and he's proud to be here tonight.
28:29The production team are giving this match a big fight feel as the competitors are seen walking
28:33to Gorilla before making their entrances. Foley gets as big an ovation as what Jesse did and fans
28:38are delighted to see Mrs Foley's baby boy back in the main event. The game's out next, accompanied by
28:44Chyna, and Jesse immediately gets in the face of the 9th wonder of the world, telling her that he
28:49won't tolerate or interfering in this match. Just as Hunter and Jesse look like they're about to square
28:54off, the glass shatters and here comes the WWF champion. Triple H looks to attack right off the bat
29:00but Austin avoids him and instead he lays into the game with those signature piston-like rights.
29:04Foley trips Hunter from the outside and he bounces Triple H's head off the announce desk before Austin
29:09joins them and both he and Foley team up to take Hemsley out. Back in the ring, Triple H gets
29:14used as a
29:15tennis ball as he's bounced between his two opponents. Austin and Foley use yet more teamwork to take
29:20trips down with a shot to the midsection followed by a knee lift. Foley then gives Austin a hug,
29:25to which the WWF champion isn't too appreciative of, and he voices his displeasure in the form of more
29:31right hands. Austin then looks for a stunner but Foley counters and Austin gets shoved into Triple H
29:36before Mick joins him on the outside after a failed charge attack. Austin gains control, taking care of
29:42both of his opponents on the outside, and whilst he's busy fighting with Hunter, China takes the
29:46opportunity to throw Mankind into the ring post behind Jesse's back. Stone Cold chokes Hemsley
29:51with a cable while Jesse's distracted by both China and Mankind, and when Austin tries to get back in
29:57the ring, the game whacks him in the knee with a steel chair. Jesse asks Hunter if he hit Austin
30:02with
30:02the chair before turning to the crowd for confirmation, but so what if he did? There's no DQ in a
30:07triple
30:08threat match, Jesse, you silly goose. We have a one on one match for the time being as Triple H
30:13scores
30:13with his facebreaker knee smash to Mick before going to work in the corner, Austin still struggling on
30:18the outside as Foley manages to lock in the mandible claw to Triple H, but China trips Mick and Mankind
30:24gets his little dude love pulled into the ring post. Unfortunately for China though, Jesse spotted her
30:29getting involved and he takes it upon himself to eject her from ringside. The argument continues all the
30:34way up the ramp allowing Stone Cold to take down Triple H from behind before the two men continue
30:39to fight at the side of the entranceway. Hemsley gets sent into the barricade, some guardrails
30:45and a lion's den cage before being brought back down to the ring. Back inside the ropes, Triple H
30:50once again targets Austin's knee as he wraps it around the ring post before connecting with a chop
30:55lock. Foley's back up and both he and Hunter take turns at laying the boots into Austin, the two
30:59challengers then team up to deliver a double clothesline, but the alliance is short lived as
31:04the two men return to throwing hands. Foley takes both he and Hunter over the top rope with his
31:09cactus clothesline, but his follow up cannonball from the apron misses and Foley splats hard on the
31:15floor. Austin gets his knee wrapped around the ring post for a second time, but not a third as
31:20Austin counters and Triple H crashes into the ring post. Both men then take the fight into the crowd
31:25before being joined by Mankind who ends up taking a backdrop on the concrete floor. Our man Mick would
31:30just never phone it in, would he? All three men make it back inside and Austin fights off both
31:35challengers by countering a pedigree and catapulting Hemsley into Foley. Hunter heads to the outside to
31:41grab a weapon, meanwhile Austin scores with a stunner back inside the ring but the pin gets broken up by
31:45Triple H using a steel chair. Jesse gives Hunter a hard time for using a weapon so Triple H says
31:51fuck you big lad, metaphorically of course, by dimming Foley's lights with a chair shot right at the head.
31:57Hunter makes the cover, but Jesse refuses to count. The crowd then erupts as the two men look like
32:03they're about to get it on, but before they can throw down, Shane McMahon makes an appearance to
32:07get in Ventura's face. Shano ends up taking a stunner for his troubles before getting launched
32:13over the top rope by Jesse. Unfortunately though, whilst he and Austin are talking smack to Shane,
32:18Austin accidentally gets tangled up in the ropes and Triple H has to help him out. They did try to
32:24cover
32:24this up on the network but it's one of those infamous incidents that everyone knows about,
32:29and if you don't know about it, have a listen to Stone Cold explaining what happened on his podcast,
32:34there's a clip on youtube and it makes me laugh every time I hear it. Austin and Trips take each
32:39other out with a double clothesline and this allows Mick to grab Socko out of his tights,
32:43he has a decision to make as to who's gonna suffer the fate of getting a smelly sock shoved down
32:48their gullet and it's Stone Cold who draws the short straw. Never fear though, Mick may not have
32:53two ears but he does have two hands, so that means Triple H gets a mandible claw as well. A
32:59swift kick
32:59to the dick puts a stop with that and Austin scores with a stunner to Helmsley, Foley breaks up the
33:04pin
33:05and he gets thrown into the top of the ring post as punishment, Austin turns around straight into a
33:10pedigree but once again Foley breaks up the pin and he's able to connect with a double arm DDT on
33:16the
33:16champion. Foley rolls Austin over and Jesse Ventura counts 1, 2, 3 and there you have it, we have a
33:23new WWF champion here tonight at Summerslam. The fans are happy about the result but there's a
33:28strange atmosphere surrounding the outcome, almost like there was a mistake and Foley won the match
33:34by accident. It could very well have been set up to look like this though as we learned years later
33:39that Austin refused to drop the title to Triple H on this evening and this isn't typical internet rumours
33:45either, both Austin and Hunter confirmed that Stone Cold didn't want to drop the belt to Helmsley,
33:51even though Hunter was penciled in to win the belt weeks ago, and that's why Mick was added to this
33:56triple threat match at the very last minute. Either way, Mick Foley is now a three time WWF champion and
34:02Triple H is none too happy about it. He attacks Austin's knee with a steel chair while China holds
34:07off the officials, it looks like the game has completely lost his mind as the PPV fades to black.
34:17An entertaining PPV right here from the WWF as long as you go into it knowing what to expect.
34:22It wasn't as good as last year's Summerslam in my opinion, but still a pretty decent Attitude
34:27era show that may lack a bit in regards to in-ring action, but it does excel in variety. The
34:33beginning
34:34of the show is pretty fast-paced and matches go by pretty quickly, and the second half gives fans a
34:39chance to settle in and enjoy that kind of WWF chaos that you'd only get in the Attitude era. Again,
34:45an entertaining show if you know what you're getting yourself into, grapple connoisseurs and
34:50work-rate aficionados may need to look elsewhere. Also, whatever you do, don't miss the next episode of
34:56re-living the war on Thursday, Summerslam 99 extends into tomorrow night's RAW in a pretty big way,
35:02so hopefully I'll see you all again for episode 198. Thanks for watching everyone, and please take care.
35:32to see you next time.
35:36to see you next time.
