00:01Well, Upper House members turned up to Parliament today expecting a lengthy and passionate debate
00:07about the future of greyhound racing in Tasmania. Instead, they discovered the government has
00:13actually deferred debate on the bill. Now, we think that's because the government was concerned
00:18that it didn't have the numbers to get the bill through the Upper House. Now, Tasmania's Upper
00:23House is actually ruled by independents. On this greyhound bill, it was the Liberal government
00:29that's been trying to ban greyhound racing, while Labour is actually opposed to it. So
00:35they want to see the industry continue. The government had a Greens member and one independent
00:40that was definitely on site, and they need to convince another three of those five undecided
00:46independents to support the bill. But it turns out that's sort of harder than they realised.
00:51Now, there are a few independents in the Upper House who say, you know, they are no fan of
00:54racing, but they're concerned about the process. And they had a lot of questions. And that
01:00was evident last night when debates started. So the government's decided to push it off
01:05until next month to give those independents more time to go through it and to answer those
01:11questions. The only thing is that some of those undecided members didn't react too well to the
01:16last minute deferral and actually feel it was very disrespectful and they're quite frustrated.
01:20Now, either way, we understand that the Premier has said that the public funding towards greyhound
01:27racing would end in 2029. So it certainly would leave the industry at a lot of uncertainty regardless.
