The Tasmanian government's offering a $4.8 million compensation package to the state's greyhound racing industry. That announcement pre-empts an expected final vote in the upper house this week which could see the industry being phased out of Tasmania during the next three years.

01:17But it also says it doesn't want to put forward a firm position at this stage.

01:29you've got your rarers.
01:30As the vote looms, both sides make their cases.
01:34He's turned Tasmanian livelihoods upside down. It's no way to treat Tasmanians. There hasn't been a proper process around this.
01:42The right thing to do is clearly to support this legislation. It's really clear that this is an outdated, cruel
01:49and unpopular industry.
