Forecast for the nation beginning Thursday April 15, 2026.
Transcript
00:00Hello from the Bureau of Meteorology, I am Angus, this is the National Weather Forecast,
00:05we're going to take a look at Friday's weather across the nation.
00:08And there are some large empty areas of our map, and in meteorological terms that means
00:13broad regions with clear skies and sunshine around Australia for Friday, but there are
00:17some weather systems around the periphery to keep a watch of.
00:20In the north we've got some remaining moisture from ex-tropical cyclone Myla continuing to
00:24fuel thunderstorms in parts of the territory.
00:27For the south east we've got this strong, cold, wintry wind flow hitting parts of Tasmania,
00:32Victoria and New South Wales, and in the south west we have another cold front which is going
00:37to be heading towards Perth right at the end of the day on Friday.
00:41Let's fly around the states, and most of Queensland will have clear, bright, sunny skies and warm
00:46temperatures, including Brisbane, tracking for a high of 31 degrees without any strong
00:50winds.
00:51There will be some rain in the west, with showers and storms from long reach out toward Mount
00:55Isa, particularly getting going through the afternoon and into the evening, and a few
00:59scattered showers across the Cape York Peninsula as well.
01:03Down through New South Wales, northern and western parts of the state will have really bright,
01:07sunny and warm conditions, with temperatures about 5 degrees above average.
01:11When it comes to rainfall, the action is all on the east coast from about Newcastle down
01:16towards the Victorian border.
01:18Now for this stretch, including Sydney and Wollongong, the morning will actually be quite bright,
01:21sunny and warm.
01:23In the afternoon we'll see a cold wind change slide northwards, so that will do a few things.
01:28Temperatures will drop, the wind will pick up during the afternoon, and we'll see the
01:32arrival of some showers and thunderstorms as that wind does change as well.
01:36There is even the possibility of some severe thunderstorms as we head late afternoon into
01:40the evening time period for Sydney and Wollongong that could bring some wind or hail damage.
01:46To Victoria, quite a cool day across the state here.
01:49If you scan around all the temperatures here, they're pretty much all in the teens, with
01:53the exception of Mildura, tracking up towards 21 degrees.
01:57There will be a fairly firm westerly wind blowing across Victoria tomorrow, and there will
02:02be some showers as well.
02:03Now showers could hit anyone along the south coast, from Warrnambool and Portland, all the
02:07way out here to the east of Gippsland.
02:09Possible showers around Melbourne, and pushing up towards the eastern ranges as well.
02:13Now while that's a pretty large area, no one is expecting to get heavy falls, so it will
02:17just be low rainfall totals.
02:20Really windy day across Tasmania on Friday, in fact we've already got damaging wind warnings
02:24in place for these gusts, as they could be pushing 90 or 100 kilometres an hour, including
02:29in the south east around the Hobart area, as well as parts of central eastern and northeastern
02:33Tasmania, where those winds could really be blowing through strongly.
02:38Showers will be persistent in the west and about the mountains, with some people getting
02:41between 10 and 30 millimetres.
02:43Hobart could get a light shower or two, but perhaps just one or two millimetres total.
02:49Southern parts of South Australia will have quite a cloudy day on Friday, or at least passing
02:53cloud cover, and that does include in and around Adelaide.
02:57Keep an eye on the temperatures, we see low 20s from Wyala, grading towards the high teens
03:02down in Mount Gambier, and this whole region is on the cool side of average.
03:06Further north and further west it is much warmer and sunnier.
03:09There won't be much rain across South Australia on Friday, but a couple of light showers possible
03:13from Murray Bridge down to the very far south.
03:17The morning, and actually most of the afternoon, will be quite bright for southern parts of
03:22WA.
03:22There will be some sunshine, temperatures will be pleasant, and increasing cloud coverage
03:28will move overhead through the day.
03:29But it's not until the evening when we're likely to see the arrival of some rainfall,
03:33as this cold front finally reaches the far west coast of the state towards the last
03:38few hours of the day.
03:39Then we'll finish off with Perth, Margaret River, the south western corner, all seeing
03:44some rain on Friday night, possibly after 9pm, and heading into the start of the weekend.
03:49Further north from Geraldton up to the Pilbara, it will remain bright, sunny and clear.
03:55And the wet season is not done yet, there will be scattered showers and storms right across
04:00the top end, all the way from Arnhem Land across to Darwin, and in fact the wet weather could
04:05dip down into the Carpentaria and Barclay regions in towards central parts of the territory.
04:11That's quite a stark contrast to what's going on in northern WA, where it's bright, sunny
04:15and dry through the Kimberley and Pilbara, and it is very dry through Australia's red
04:20centre as well.
04:22That's what I've got for you for today, I will be back this time tomorrow with the
04:25weekend update, but until then, more weather info can be found on the BOM website or the
04:30BOM weather app, and thank you so much for watching.
