Are these the new best uniforms in D.C. Sports?
Transcript
00:00So, Danny, best look in D.C. sports right now belongs to who?
00:04We have a new champion.
00:06We do.
00:07We've got the number one seed, the home whites.
00:10Home whites?
00:11For the Washington football gentleman.
00:13Because it was good enough for Joe Gibbs, it's good enough for me.
00:15We should wear white at home.
00:16You got it, coach.
00:16Let's do that.
00:18Let's do what Joe Gibbs says to do.
00:20And everyone else can shut up.
00:22Do that.
00:23White uniform, burgundy pants, the best look?
00:25Yes, it is.
00:27I think people are going to sleep on the white on gold combination.
00:30Or really, what is the mustard yellow pants?
00:32They're not actually the gold.
00:34The Bruce Allens?
00:34Yes, but the white on yellow pants, I think, is going to look really good, too.
00:38I actually think adding the stripes on the side of those pants, having those as an option, though.
00:44You know this as a guy who likes clothes and has a closet with a lot of nice things in
00:47it.
00:47You add just like a versatile pair of pants, now all of a sudden.
00:51Oh, it opens up all the possibilities.
00:53The magic changes.
00:54It's like, how many different uniforms can you wear if it's just burgundy pants with
00:58white and burgundy and white pants or whatever?
01:01The math is different.
01:02Then now you add gold and the permutations are like times three.
01:05So now there's like 21 different variations you've introduced just with those gold pants.
01:10And they should rock all of them over the course of the season.
01:13Here's what I came up with.
01:14I actually think the Nationals' navy blue jerseys that they wore last night.
01:19That was my one-see.
01:20I think that's about as good as it gets.
01:23I am a huge fan of the Nationals' electric blue alternates, which are their City Connects now.
01:31I think they're better than the gray ones that everybody loved.
01:34I've always loved these electric blues that they wore on the weekends.
01:37We need a little cold water for that tick.
01:39I thought about that actually as my one-seat in D.C. sport.
01:43But I'm going with the navy blues that the Nats wore all the way to the World Series.
01:47And the other uniform I will throw into the conversation, the jersey that I think has to get a little
01:51run here,
01:52is the cap Screaming Eagle.
01:54Either the black or the red.
01:55You could go whichever way you'd like.
01:57I love the black Screaming Eagle like Ovi has always loved it.
02:00They now do the red version of it.
02:02That's great too.
02:02But that would be my short list.
02:04Would be navy blue Nats, electric blue Nats, commanders clean home whites, and then the capitals Screaming Eagle.
02:14But I think the commanders are now on the board.
02:16They've fallen completely out of the conversation.
02:19Yeah, they were not receiving any votes.
02:20And now, it's jumped all the way up to my one-see.
02:23I think the whites that, I always call them the Carson Wentz whites,
02:26but those whites that everyone knows, the gradient, burgundy, fake color, whatever that was,
02:31the terrible, you're not really Washington, you look like the Arizona Cardinals or something,
02:35whatever those were, that was the worst uniform in the history of D.C. sports.
02:39It was so ugly and so terrible.
02:41Maybe right there with like teal wizards stuff.
02:44Just the teal on teal look.
02:46Yep.
02:46Bad.
02:47The burgundies for the commanders were closer to the correct color, but still wrong.
02:52They looked like they were USC.
02:54It was like Juju Smith-Schuster's, Matt Leinert's USC Trojans with Reggie Bush.
03:01I liked those better than the whites, but they were bad too.
03:04Now, both of their traditional uniforms are in the top five combo,
03:09and this is where you and I will part ways.
03:12As far as alternates, if that's its own category,
03:15those blacks give the electric blue Nats alts a run for their money as the best in the city.
03:19So, my list currently would go football team whites one, Nats blues, not the...
03:28Navy blue.
03:28Yeah, not the correct blues, the blues of joy.
03:31Those ones are number two.
03:32Number three is the burgundy for the football team again.
03:35Four would probably be the Caps Reds.
03:38Just the regular old-fashioned Reds.
03:40I think that Screaming Eagle...
03:41If you're going Red, go Screaming Eagle Reds.
03:42No, that could just die.
03:43You just want the letters that say Capitals?
03:45Yeah, I want a big bonfire for all the Screaming Eagle.
03:48So, that's Yager time to me.
03:49That's time of sadness.
03:50That era should be done away with.
03:52A lot of Joey Juneau, Black Screaming Eagle jersey.
03:55A lot of epic, epic failure and wrongness.
03:57So, I want that gone.
03:59There are no Wizards jerseys on the list, though.
04:01They had one that crept in a little while ago with the blue that looked like bullets.
04:08The blue looked like those old mid-80s Michael Adams, Mark Allery, Jeff Rulon,
04:13Jeff Malone kind of blue with some stripes on it.
04:16They replaced that with the dumb, darker blue that says District on it.
04:20Those are stupid.
04:21Golds are stupid.
04:22The Cherry Blossom ones for them are stupid.
04:24The blue...
04:42...consider for this conversation.
04:43They basically took the old Bullets ones and they just turned the clock.
04:47So, the incredibly handsome Corey Kispert is wearing it in this picture, if I can untether it.
04:52I hope it's not the one I'm thinking of.
04:54It's this one right here.
04:55It looks like a Bullets jersey.
04:57Yes, but why don't you just go with the better version of that?
05:00Which is the white...
05:01Which one's that?
05:02You're talking about?
05:02The red, white, and blue on the left there.
05:03That clean...
05:04That is the Bullets jersey.
05:05No, that's not.
05:06That's a modern, weird thing.
05:08No, this is Bullets.
05:08This is 80s, headbands, armbands, knee pads, angry men playing in the post.
05:16That's what that jersey says to me.
05:17That says, I'm going to back you down and go for 17 and 9 in a 25-point loss.
05:23Well, it's a different color.
05:24The blue's not right.
05:25I mean, if people are mad that it's not the right burgundy, then you can't tell me that's the right
05:28blue.
05:29No, that's closer to the blue than it was.
05:30They've changed the blue over the years, talking about the Wizards.
05:32Because they wore the Bullets, of course.
05:33That name should never have changed.
05:34But that was my foresee, but it doesn't even exist, so they don't really do that.
05:38That was a one-time throwback.
05:40So instead of Bullets, it says Washington on it.
05:41That's the team, by the way, that could really benefit from a rebrand.
05:45Oh, yeah.
05:45I saw this viral clip going around on TikTok, Instagram, whatever the app was.
05:50And this guy did a big presentation on the Rock the Red era for the Capitals.
05:55Have you guys seen this?
05:56No.
05:56And so I'll have to send it to the group chat.
05:58It was pretty cool.
05:59I'll try to tweet it out if I can find it here in the next few minutes.
06:03But basically, this guy tells the backstory on Rock the Red.
06:06And he's like, it was a calculation.
06:09Nobody was going to Caps games.
06:10Nobody was that in.
06:11They had just drafted Ovechkin.
06:12They were trying to turn the tide at the arena.
06:14And I don't know the guy's name, but he shouts out, like, the executive with Ted that came up with
06:18the idea of,
06:20we need a color that everyone's going to be wearing in the arena.
06:23And it's like a thing that you're buying into.
06:25And they came up with the idea.
06:26This brand was going to be called Rock the Red.
06:29Red uniforms.
06:30And they completely rebranded the entire organization.
06:32There was no comp.
06:33There was nothing similar to that in Capitals lore.
06:36Anyway, currently, I think the Wizards would benefit immensely from something like that.
06:41Like, we're at a time where the Wizards are about to start winning again, hopefully.
06:47And they're coming out of this rebuild.
06:50And they have this opportunity, this chance to have a different era.
06:54They should.
06:55They're not going to rename themselves, I don't think.
06:56Although, that would be great, too.
06:57They should.
06:58But they should completely come out with new uniforms, have some kind of color scheme in the arena,
07:04do like what the Caps did with the Rock the Red era.
07:07They would benefit from that huge.
07:09100%.
07:09Because the guy's talking about, if you're too far down the line in terms of brand equity, you can't change
07:14it.
07:15It doesn't help you to change.
07:17What brand equity do the Wizards have, for goodness sakes?
07:20You've done nothing but lose forever.
07:22You've been a joke.
07:23You've been a punchline.
07:24You have been among the dregs of the league.
07:26You've been the only team that doesn't have a 50-win season.
07:28Everyone else has taken a turn except for you.
07:30Not only have you not had any playoff success, you've had no success of any kind.
07:34You have been the comic relief organization in the NBA.
07:38They could absolutely do with a brand overhaul, with a name overhaul.
07:42A million things could happen that would be positive for them.
07:44I'm 100% with you.
07:46All right, let's hit the phones.
07:47800-636-1067.
07:49The Commanders have a new look.
07:52They're throwing it back to the Redskins era with their whites and their burgundies.
07:55They've got this new hail razor, black-on-black, to improve the black uniforms as well.
08:01Danny, best thing that they did today was what?
08:03Not having...
08:16Stripes on the pants.
08:17Yes.
08:18Yeah, that's my one-act.
08:19Perfect.
08:19The font on the numbers.
08:20The font...
08:21You could have done everything right and then not had the exact same font.
08:24Mm-hmm.
08:24They have the same font.
08:25The Wayne Fontenow's perfect.
08:26The Jane in Daniels 5 looks like the Brett Conway 5.
08:30Right?
08:31The 14 that whoever's going to be wearing, running around, is going to look like Brad Johnson in the old
08:36uniform.
08:37In fact, Strobes was holding up the burgundy that was out here in the bullpen that Klaus had brought by
08:42today when he joined B. Mitch and Finley in person.
08:45And I was like, what's this from?
08:46He's like, oh, this is the thing today.
08:48And I'm like, walking up, I just thought it was an old Doug Williams jersey that was chilling there.
08:52And I flip it around and it's a McLaurin.
08:53It just...
08:54All it is is the exact same jersey that it used to be.
08:56If you're into that kind of thing, if you like the old Redskins jerseys, you're going to like the new
09:01Commanders jerseys.
09:02Jimmy's in the district.
09:03What's up, Jimmy?
09:03How are you?
09:07Jimmy?
09:07Jimmy.
09:08This is the part where you talk.
09:11It's pulling off Lufthansa ice.
09:13You will get nothing.
09:16We were due for one of those.
09:17Yeah, it's been a minute.
09:18Show was going well.
09:19Momentum.
09:20Good segment.
09:21Throwing the ball around.
09:21People were listening.
09:22We're talking.
09:23Masses were being entertained.
09:24Shows were being done.
09:25And then you engaged the people.
09:27That was the mistake.
09:28That was the mistake we made.
09:30Jay in Brooklyn, listening on the Odyssey app.
09:32You're from New York.
09:33You know about good sports talk radio.
09:35What do you got?
09:36Hey, guys.
09:37I'll just say that I'm elated with the uniforms.
09:41They look great.
09:41If I was in a coma for the last six years and I woke up and saw the team on
09:46the field with those uniforms, I'd know it was the same team that I rooted for.
09:52And, yeah, I think the spear is an experiment to see if maybe cancel culture doesn't push back again for
09:58too much.
09:59And then maybe they'll get rid of the awful block W.
10:02That would be wonderful.
10:04Could I just comment on the Washington Wizards one second?
10:09I don't know if you saw what Abdiah did last night.
10:11But I'd like to say that the Washington Wizards, for the last 41 years, is the worst franchise in American
10:20sports.
10:21Period.
10:22To let go of Abdiah was a disgrace.
10:25And, you know, the Beale deal was horrendous.
10:29The arenas deal years before.
10:32The number of mistakes by the front office is mind-boggling.
10:35So maybe your market and comment on that somewhere in the future.
10:38Thanks so much, guys.
10:39Appreciate you, buddy.
10:40Appreciate you.
10:40Yeah, I disagree with you on the Abdiah trade.
10:42I know it's going to look.
10:44On a binary, you go, he played great for the 10 seed.
10:47You know, they're running everything through him.
10:49He played awesome.
10:50Where does that jive with what they're trying to do in terms of asset gathering?
10:54And would you have won a handful more games this year?
10:56How does that help you?
10:57So it's twofold for me.
10:58A, he is the beneficiary of being the guy on a bad or a mediocre team, let's call it, which
11:05is what I think they are.
11:06It goes back to Terrell Pryor when Washington signed him and everyone was all excited.
11:10And the point I kept making is, as people were screaming that he had 1,000 yards, someone's got to
11:15get yards.
11:16He had a million targets, had a low catch percentage for like 70 catches and 1,000 yards.
11:22I wasn't that excited about it.
11:24I think Denny Abdiah, on a championship-level team, you push him down the depth chart a little bit, is
11:29probably the perfect sixth man, maybe a good fourth option, something like that.
11:33But on this team, where he gets to let his hair down and go be great, he's playing his butt
11:37off.
11:3724 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, he's awesome.
11:40And by the way, he's only 25 years old.
11:42Had a great year.
11:42But you've heard Michael Weir talk about it, the timing didn't match up with where their build was going.
11:47So that's my second point.
11:48Yeah.
11:48He is 25.
11:50Their players are all 20 and 21.
11:53And if you're old on that team, you're 22.
11:55He gets paid sooner.
11:56He is ahead of the curve.
11:58They wanted to, A, basically have everyone be comparable ages, which I think is smart, and B, be terrible.
12:05Having Denny Abdiah play really good basketball for them this year.
12:20And then it was like, with the backup unit, he could sort of be the point forward.
12:23They didn't know what they were doing.
12:24They drafted this player correctly, by the way.
12:26That was a good pick at 9.
12:279th pick?
12:28And then you got a bunch of this match, and no one's really sure.
12:31Different regimes have different ideas.
12:33So if your point is, you shouldn't let good players go, okay, I guess I sort of understand that.
12:38But there's a lot more nuance to it than, oh, these idiots, this new regime, let this good player go.
12:43I think they had an idea that he could be pretty good, but it doesn't jive with where they were
12:47and what they wanted.
12:47I don't disagree on how badly they've been run for a long, long, long time.
12:51Long time, dude.
12:51Ernie Grunfeld, not a particularly good executive.
12:53I think Shepard was better, as evidenced by the draft pick of Avdia at 9, but obviously it wasn't until
12:59right now with this group that they've done things correctly.
13:01And I think these guys have batted pretty close to 1,000.
13:04If you want to say this was a swing and a miss, that's your prerogative.
13:08As I sit here today, I would do that Avdia trade again because of, A, you're terrible on purpose.
13:14That's how they became the worst team in the NBA this year, and it's why they're gunning for the number
13:19one pick.
13:19And hopefully, the Bonsa, who they might not have been able to get if they kept Avdia.
13:25And secondly, he would be paid way sooner, and it's like the Nats, C.J. Abrams and Mackenzie Gore.
13:31He does not match up with your rebuild.
13:34You're not going to be good enough again before it's time to start shelling out huge money to him
13:38that changes what you're able to do on the market when you're good again.
