00:00Now we're lucky enough to get another true burgundy and gold legend,
00:04both for his play on the field and for all he's done on the broadcast
00:07with the team over the years.
00:09The one and only Rick Doc Walker joining us now.
00:12Hello, Doc.
00:13How are you?
00:15JP, I'm good, man.
00:16I'm so happy for Brian.
00:17I know how emotional he gets when we start talking about uniforms,
00:22names, and changes.
00:23And so I just laugh when I got the call and I go,
00:28JP, B. Mitch, and they want to know if you want to come on the show.
00:31I said, for what?
00:33And I knew that B. Mitch was behind this in asking me about uniform change.
00:39And you know, I'd do anything for you two,
00:42so I'm going to take these shots and deal with it.
00:47I am thrilled of anything that reminds me of the glory days.
00:53I'll never understand how it could have ever gotten as bad as it did.
00:58But who cares?
01:00They're correcting their wrongs,
01:02and eventually we'll be back 100% in full,
01:05and the rest will be history.
01:07I kind of know how your feelings are, Doc.
01:08I know you're just like me when it comes down to uniforms.
01:11I like the fact that it gotten back to it looks like the burger didn't go,
01:17as you always would say.
01:18Because when I saw the colors, I was instantly like, oh, okay, cool.
01:22It went back to the right colors.
01:23Yeah, because when I saw them before,
01:27at JP State, it looked like Louisville.
01:29We looked like Louisville.
01:31Yeah, it looked like a practical joke.
01:32Or like somebody was high when they decided to come up with the design.
01:39So, Doc, I'm curious for you, seeing the burgundy.
01:44Look, we got to see the white last year, right?
01:47The Super Bowl era that they brought back,
01:49and I thought that was a great step.
01:51Now, I also know that you care about the play on the field,
01:53and nothing is more important than that.
01:56But seeing, like you said, correcting the previous wrongs,
02:01which I think is a great way to phrase it.
02:04And then knowing that eventually, and it's a few years out,
02:07but like, you know, the progress is legitimate
02:10towards getting back to the stadium.
02:12I agree.
02:13What does that mean for you?
02:15It's a step in the right direction.
02:17I applaud the administration for somebody effed up.
02:24Because a lot of the same people are still there.
02:27So you can't come out of this and say you had nothing to do with it.
02:29But somebody made a decision to go with that cranberry wine
02:33and all that garbage they threw out there.
02:35If those people are still employed, God bless them.
02:39I don't think those decision makers right there are employed anymore, Doc.
02:42They're gone.
02:43Well, I hope you're right.
02:44I don't know.
02:45All I'm saying is that there's so much honor that's involved
02:49in what that uniform represented, the people that supported this area of DMV,
02:54is so unique.
02:56And to meet them halfway is not only business smart,
03:00it's just the right thing to do.
03:02And this group is progressive, and they're doing that.
03:04We've got to back them with support, but we've got to merge the two.
03:08As long as we're splintered, it's never going to be the full impact
03:11that that new stadium deserves.
03:14So we've got some time.
03:15We've got to get our stuff together.
03:16And it starts on the field.
03:18Because, again, they can come out.
03:20They come out that they're skinny, skinny, skinnies.
03:23If they block and tackle better, they'll get my vote.
03:26There you go.
03:27Doc, you know Bob Biagi.
03:29He's a friend of all of ours.
03:30He sent me a text message.
03:32He said, never, ever heard almost 100% of the fan base be so unanimous
03:36and pumped up.
03:38And I do think, listen, there's always going to be critics.
03:41You know, there's always going to be folks with a negative opinion.
03:45But by and large, the reaction of this seems like the most positive thing
03:51that's happened since they beat Detroit in the divisional round.
03:55Yeah.
03:56I'm curious if you've noticed that too.
03:58Yeah, no, I agree.
04:00It's a relief, man.
04:01People, this ownership group is smart enough to understand.
04:05Can you believe how many adults take this that seriously?
04:08I mean, we're collegiate.
04:10But our atmosphere, I've always felt that we have a collegiate environment
04:15when it comes to the Burgundy and Gold.
04:18And if you are in marketing and you want to make money,
04:21how in the world could you stumble over your feet and blow this deal?
04:27So they're smart.
04:29They're going to put it back together, and we just have to follow it.
04:32And, again, on the field, the hard job is up to the coaching staff and scouts.
04:36Get us good people.
04:38And if you get them, you've got to put them in the game.
04:41And if you put them in the game, they actually have to do their jobs.
04:43And if they can pull that off, I think we'll all be happy.
04:46There you go.
04:47I'm with that.
04:47Totally.
04:48And what I've said repeatedly is Josh Harris is never going to make a tackle.
04:53You know, Mitch Rails is not going to catch any passes.
04:56Magic Johnson is not going to throw any skyhooks through the uprights.
05:00But, like, the best thing they could do is put the organization in a place to succeed,
05:06and I think they deserve a lot of credit for doing that.
05:12Mm-hmm.
05:13Yeah, they are.
05:14On third and eight, somebody's got to make a tackle.
05:17Somebody's got to get to the quarterback.
05:19Somebody's got to set an edge.
05:20It ain't got a damn thing to do with nothing other than training, preparation,
05:25within those doors.
05:26The people that are there, they've got to do a better job and get better results.
05:33I'm curious, Doc, do you – I want to ask the folks on the phones this.
05:37Do you have – and you may not – do you have a, like, a favorite thing that they did?
05:45Because I think our eyes get drawn to the black uniforms and the spear being introduced,
05:50but there's a lot of little details that happen.
05:54How hard is it to duplicate something that worked?
06:00Right.
06:01Are we supposed to do a backflip because somebody used common sense
06:06and said just repeat what they did already?
06:09Mm-hmm.
06:09That's what they want.
06:10They're not asking for nothing new.
06:12They're asking for what they had.
06:15Mm-hmm.
06:17What am I missing?
06:20Not wrong.
06:21Not wrong.
06:22And I think –
06:22Well, no, you must not like it.
06:24They didn't ask for anything new.
06:26Nobody asked for glitter.
06:27Nobody asked for designers.
06:29They asked for a uniform.
06:31That's like Penn State getting offended if you don't like their uniform.
06:34They love it.
06:35Yeah.
06:36It means a lot to them.
06:37They adore wearing it.
06:39Anytime you change that and break that up, you have zero skills in marketing
06:45because you just wipe out a generation of people and give them the finger
06:49because you think you've got cute ideas.
06:52So I'm pleased at the fact that they said, you know what, let's correct this.
06:57And they did it.
06:58And they did it.
07:00Innovation, yeah, the black, whatever.
07:01It's going to happen.
07:03Nothing stays the same.
07:04If not, we'd still be rolling our windows up.
07:07So I'm not against it.
07:08I'm just saying, let's stop focusing on anything other than blocking, tackling, and winning.
07:16Let's get to that.
07:19I am with you, sir.
07:25Now, I know you well enough that you're not that into uniforms,
07:29but did this one resonate a little bit differently?
07:33No, I'm in our uniform.
07:36BS.
07:36Yes, I am in the uniforms.
07:38I'm in our uniform.
07:43And I think they did a hell of a job of trying to bring it back.
07:46See, I think this shows one thing.
07:48We had one guy come in and say he was a fan,
07:51and he went away from everything that was traditional.
07:53Another guy comes in and says he's a fan,
07:55and he brings everything back that's traditional.
07:58Who do you think the damn fan is?
08:01That's the main thing.
08:03I think many people are looking at that.
08:04Blind man can see that.
08:04One guy was, and one guy was not.
08:06And the guy that was is still here.
08:10Right.
08:11No, I mean, that's clear.
08:13That's clear.
08:14Got to support it.
08:15Can't wait.
08:15I mean, as they add to it, the spirit through W,
08:20eventually you're going to add on something.
08:22Do you think Notre Dame's uniform is boring?
08:25And they've been having that for years, forever.
08:28Yeah.
08:29Ain't nobody complaining about it.
08:30Because what they're trying to do is beat you on the scoreboard.
08:32Yeah.
08:33Be leery about people worrying about how to trick things into reality.
08:37We don't need that.
08:38This fan base has gone through enough.
08:40Now, we were the Liberace of the NFL.
08:43All them damn helmets and uniforms.
08:46We were the Liberace of the NFL.
08:50So, it's calming to finally hit it right and then win with it.
08:54And then somebody come in and decide to change that.
08:57But that's why we applaud corrections.
09:01I love the Liberace of the NFL.
09:04Talking with the legend Rick Doc Walker here on the Rude Guest Hotline.
09:09Doc, I'm curious.
09:10I don't know how busy you've been this morning.
09:13I know you've got an event here in a few minutes.
09:14So, if you've got to run, just say the word.
09:16But, have you talked to or texted with any former teammates?
09:20Just kind of like their reaction to the uni?
09:23No, I checked out it.
09:25No, because I think getting it back, everybody's comforted in that.
09:30They just want it back.
09:31They're not asking for anything new.
09:35No one that I know.
09:36They just want to wear what they wore.
09:38And they have a great sense of pride in that because that's what it was.
09:43That's what you would kind of represent.
09:44And the fan base, it pains me to hear the pain of the fans.
09:49Again, as I mentioned, and B. Mitch knows it because he's had it happen to him more than I did.
09:54When you get in there at 3 or 4 in the morning from the West Coast,
09:58now they're going all over the world.
10:01B. Mitch, have you ever come to an empty parking lot?
10:03Have you ever entered an empty entryway into the park?
10:10Band-wise, their fans are always there.
10:12Yeah, yeah.
10:13They're always there.
10:15That ain't happening league-wide.
10:18Big time.
10:19These people are unique, man.
10:21I'm telling you.
10:22Yeah.
10:23Forever.
10:24They don't fail you.
10:26No matter how bad you play, they don't fail you.
10:29So that's who I care for.
10:31That's who I hope gets satisfaction in it, that it's represented.
10:37Whether or not they settle the score on what's ethical and what's right.
10:41Because people just, it's about money.
10:43We get it.
10:44I'm not that crazy.
10:46If they can make a dollar off it, they're going to try to monopolize.
10:49But again, Penn State's uniform, Notre Dame.
10:52College tells us a hell of a lot we should pay attention to.
10:55And they continually make it off donations and residuals from alums.
11:02Because they are happy to support their brand.
11:06Yep.
11:07Hello?
11:08100%.
11:09Why would you want to piss people off?
11:11And then you open up a new place.
11:13It doesn't make any sense.
11:15So, Doc, it's funny.
11:16You've referenced some of the iconic college uniforms.
11:19You think of Penn State.
11:20You think Notre Dame.
11:22USC.
11:23Bama.
11:23Yeah.
11:24Michigan, that helmet.
11:25I mean, Ohio State.
11:26Certainly, those folks scream if you never mention them.
11:29I was in Scotland last week.
11:32And I did a tour of the Glasgow Celtic Stadium, which is the soccer team my family has always
11:39rooted for and one of the biggest in Europe.
11:41And they actually, and granted, there are some religious overtones to this, but they actually,
11:47this is a soccer stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, and they had a Notre Dame fighting Irish helmet
11:52in their trophy case.
11:54Yeah.
11:54Like, they had their European cup, like all these tremendous trophies, and they have a
11:58Notre Dame helmet in there.
12:00And I recognize the logo is different, right?
12:03But I can't look at that helmet now that is glossy burgundy again with a gold face mask
12:10and the stripes down the middle and not like it more.
12:13You know what I mean?
12:14Yeah.
12:16Yeah, I get it.
12:17But you recognize it.
12:18You remember it.
12:20Yeah.
12:20It's not new to you.
12:21It's not new to you.
12:24And that's with us being the Liberace.
12:26We had the Spear.
12:27We had the R.
12:28We've had three or four.
12:30We've been confused a long time.
12:33But once we got it right and got it settled in, why do you think they refer to it as
12:39the
12:40championship uniform?
12:41Right.
12:43It wasn't the first championship they won.
12:44It was the first world championship, but they had had some good years.
12:48But that's, what more do you want?
12:50It's like Dodger blues, the pinstripes.
12:53It's the socks.
12:54It is what, I mean, it's hard to establish that.
12:58It takes forever.
13:00And I think you, why do traditional schools have such an advance and more, and do they
13:06raise more capital?
13:07Because they have more people that care about them.
13:09You know, we got people right now that are pissed.
13:12They won't have any, you know how much money right now is looking the other way at us?
13:16And I say us, I mean the organization.
13:20And they don't get it right.
13:22They're leaving a lot of money on the table.
13:23I think Mark was the, it was the educational thing in the break where he was talking about
13:28Dodger blue is the blue of the Dodgers.
13:32You can't just go find that blue.
13:34And it matches there.
13:35And we always talk about getting stuff trademarked and patented.
13:39Have you ever heard that you can trademark the actual color?
13:43You can.
13:43And they do.
13:44And that's why I'm saying when I, when I, I remember hearing you say burgundy and gold so
13:48much.
13:48And now when you see the actual colors, you see the damn difference in what they had.
13:54Oh, it was horrible.
13:55That cranberry and wine.
13:57That way.
13:58And somebody had the nerve to think they had accomplished something.
14:02And how about the audacity to repeatedly tell us, no, you're wrong.
14:06It's all the same.
14:07Your guys are just wrong.
14:09Yeah.
14:09Well, they do that a lot.
14:11Doesn't mean they're right.
14:13Right.
14:13I love the fan base.
14:14They never backed down.
14:15They never backed down.
14:17And yet they still supported it, still gave it some, some love.
14:21Here's the scary part.
14:23This group doesn't, they haven't even felt, felt the full thrust of burgundy and gold power.
14:29They haven't yet.
14:30They got close to it that Detroit after that, but that still wasn't full force.
14:36And that's what I hope they get a chance to be knows.
14:40Cause he felt it multiple times.
14:43It's unbelievable.
14:44It's deafening.
14:46People rocking a building, shaking grounds and stuff.
14:50Where else do you hear that from?
14:51Very seldom.
14:52Very seldom.
14:53So I want to see it again.
14:55I am, I'm selfish.
14:57I want to see it again, but I know these people all across the DMV, especially people that are aging
15:03gracefully.
15:06They deserve it.
15:07They deserve one more shot at it.
15:09That's important.
15:10And so we got to get everybody on the same page.
15:13And then we got to go out and actually block and tackle this score.
15:16Do all those fundamental things to win again and get ourselves back where we belong to be.
15:21And that's on the biggest stage on the planet.
15:23And that's, that's why I'm in the game.
15:27I think they bring the winning back.
15:29That solves all the problems for the, for people with sense, there will be some idiots.
15:34They're still going to have an issue with something.
15:35Don, um, we, Mark Klaus, commander's team president was kind enough to join us for a while earlier this morning.
15:41Good man.
15:42Yeah.
15:42And I had a quote I wrote down that really stuck with me from, from his appearance with us was
15:48the discipline to recognize when something is just right is very important.
15:52And I, I figured you might like that because like you mentioned Penn state, like what sometimes there is absolute
15:59beauty in simplicity.
16:02Exactly.
16:03You got to dress it up.
16:04We, we call them Bama's, you know, wearing too much stuff.
16:08You can be, you can be filthy rich and be a Bama.
16:12Yep.
16:14It's not about money.
16:16It's not about money.
16:17We all know some people like that.
16:19We call them country, but how about the fact that there's honor and we, that we represent something that's given
16:25us tremendous thrills through y'all generations.
16:28Just listen to Sheehan as much as we kid him and ride him.
16:32He believes it.
16:33He lives it.
16:34And when he quit, when he was out, that hurt me.
16:38Cause he wasn't kidding.
16:41You know, there are a lot of people that have just given up.
16:43They just say, you know, you go put these crazy ass colors and all these shit up jewelry.
16:49I don't know what the hell they were trying to do.
16:51And people just fell out.
16:53Wait till they come back.
16:54They think they got a lot when they went, you know, had a great season and went to the industry
16:59champion.
16:59They haven't seen nothing yet.
17:00Yeah.
17:01Nothing.
17:01And when they go back downtown, be Mitch.
17:04Oh boy.
17:05Come on.
17:06Oh boy.
17:06This is what the whole country is about to witness.
17:09They have no idea what's about to happen.
17:12If they pull this thing back together and reunite this powerful force, it's going to be like a tsunami.
17:20When that new park opens up, it's going to be, they've never seen anything like it before.
17:25And they don't get it yet, but hopefully they will.
17:27Doc, which one of your boats are you going to take to the new RFK?
17:33I'm going to let Brian decide that because he's on it more than I am.
17:36I had to actually turn all my goods over to him because I can't afford the maintenance fees.
17:42Thank you for the time, Doc.
17:44I appreciate you joining us.
17:45You too, man.
17:45Just keep doing what you're doing.
17:47You guys are personally entertaining me, so keep it up.
17:50All right, brother.
17:51Thank you, Doc.
17:52All right.
17:52God bless y'all, man.
17:53Peace.
17:54The great Rick Doc Walker.
17:56You can follow him at Rick Doc Walker joining us.
17:58Appreciate him making time for us.
