00:00thank you for making the time um this has obviously been a priority i would say for the
00:06new ownership group um and i'm curious what this journey was like because i the nfl has rules you
00:14got a lot of protocol and none of this is easy right yeah well i mean i think anyone that's
00:19been following the journey uh since josh purchased the team would see a very purposeful path of
00:27bringing the heritage of the team back into our brand into our experiences you think about retiring
00:35art monk and daryl green's jerseys you think about um you know everything even to the design of our
00:42the the new stadium with the nod to rfk um you know i think for the ownership group in general
00:49ensuring that we really celebrate that redskins heritage is an important part of our journey
00:56and i think that this uh uniform transition is really the next step in the in that path right
01:04it brings obviously some iconic elements yeah uh back from the super bowl era b mitch you you know
01:10you know you had a lot you wore a lot of this and you know what i've told people too
01:15is it's it's not
01:17just about going back when you see these elements together it just feels right yeah the color of
01:23burgundy the the gloss on the helmet the yellow face mask the stripe pattern this is block numbers
01:30all right how powerful that is this looks like a football uniform this although it does look like
01:36our past it's also something we're proud about for the future and that's been the game i just think
01:40when i saw it the other day it was familiar right you know and i think that's that's that's the
01:45word
01:46that keeps hitting me where when i saw other stuff you have to force yourself to see past what you
01:50were saying to try to get the feel of it but this familiar the colors we know it right you
01:56know
01:56when you talk about burgundy i mean when uh it was coach uh from jim's on maroon and black i'm
02:02like no
02:02no no no it's burgundy and gold that's right and you see the program go even with the black the
02:06burgundy and gold stands out right well and you know uh one of the i think one of the most
02:10important
02:10moves in this is the return to what i would call true burgundy and gold sure and you know as
02:16a brand
02:17guy you know one of the things that i think about all the time is the consistency yeah of how
02:22you
02:22deliver your brand so you know you're going to see that burgundy and gold as the foundation of of what
02:28we do right you saw it a little bit on our website our social media certainly even integrating it into
02:34the black uniform which i think is right so your color palette absolutely is essentially the same
02:39and your alternative black just brings this kind of additional level of energy and i'm sure we'll talk
02:44about the spear in a minute but uh but but every next question i know i know it's coming so
02:50you said
02:50something fascinating in the break in your background at campbell's and in major worldwide global food
02:57brands is you you would never sell oreos without the oreo blue that's correct yeah when you arrived and
03:04remarkably there was no uniformity to the uniforms like what was the first conversation you had or even
03:11your first thoughts of like man we got to return this to what it's supposed to look like i'll get
03:15everything looking to say yeah look i i it is very true that that you know i i feel like
03:21in in brand
03:22identity and building brand equity consistency is is really important but i've got to tell you um
03:29you know we also pay a lot of attention to what our fans are saying um what our legends feel
03:37and think
03:37and and without exception this was one of the biggest things that that i heard which is we want
03:45to see the burgundy return to the burgundy of of days gone by we want to feel like those elements
03:51that
03:52we loved um when we were winning super bowls is part of what a part of what this next generation
03:59of
03:59commanders is all about and so you know as much as it is consistent with what what i've learned over
04:05the years it's also it was something that was very loud and clear from our fans and and we really
04:10do
04:10pay attention we really do absolutely so i want to talk the return of the super bowl eras now to
04:18me
04:19once you brought the the whites back last year and they were so well received and frankly just looked
04:24that much better this is what i was expecting was to just go back to the classics and and for
04:29me it's a
04:30i said this earlier it's a return to basics but the basics are beautiful right was there any discussion
04:37about not doing that about tweaking more about trying something else yeah look i i think you know
04:44one of the things that that's a that can be an easy trap to fall into sometimes and you know
04:50especially
04:51as as a marketer you you you want to you want to impact things but the discipline to recognize when
04:58something is just right um i think is really important and um the goal here wasn't to try to
05:05put our thumbprint on something or make it different or you know we want to go with what is the
05:12the best
05:13representation uh of the of the commander brand and we also want to make sure that we are doing a
05:20good
05:20job of celebrating the heritage and integrating it um into the commander brand that we're building as
05:26well and so you know although there's always temptation to try to get a little bit you know
05:31creative on certain things sometimes it's just best to hit it straight down the middle of the fairway
05:37absolutely um and deliver that like what was the process and thought process of bringing the spear
05:42back into it yeah so um you know obviously no secret right that that the spear has found its way
05:50back into certain elements that we've been doing but where it started from was really in the same
05:57idea of how do we look back at the heritage of the team and think about things from our past
06:03that could
06:04also be relevant in today and the spear became a really obvious uh opportunity because one it's
06:11instantly recognizable um from the past of the redskins people know that uh icon they they recognize it
06:19but it also can live in the commander's environment we've been building which is kind of this combination
06:24of uh the movie 300 and game of thrones and a little bit of roman greco in there and and
06:30the spear lives
06:31in that world as well and so it became what we felt was a great device to kind of connect
06:38these two
06:38generations together you know make it relevant to what we're doing today but also a clear nod to the past
06:44so as we started to utilize it last year in different things we also listened closely to how
06:51the fans were reacting to it and i think for many it was a it was a um a great
06:57uh trigger to our
06:58heritage but but also i think people like the fierceness of it and i gotta tell you you know when
07:04you see it on the helmet right both of those points forward on the front of the helmet it's pretty
07:09fierce
07:09and uh and we like that and like the integration of it it may not be a big thing to
07:13most people but
07:14to me as soon as you see it is distinctive the gold face mask yeah that is something that stood
07:22there
07:22in the past and you you could see it and you could tell the difference when on the traditional helmet
07:27when they had the burgundy the face mask and that that right there stands out and to bring that back
07:34what was that yeah so it's a lot about attention to detail um we literally top to bottom uh our
07:41team
07:41uh patrick arthur who's our cmo does an amazing job and has an incredible group of people that
07:47like really went under the hood and looked at everything so you're going to see that attention
07:53to detail our stripe pattern the gold face mask the block numbers the block letters you know but we had
07:59pretty good inspiration in what worked and was very compelling back in that super bowl era right and
08:05so we really went item by item and and hopefully fans will appreciate um that attention to detail
08:10and that consistency and uh not messing with something that's pretty amazing yeah we are joined
08:17now by commander's team president mark klaus kind enough to come in studio if you are watching on
08:22monumental sports network or on the youtube feed you can see mark brought in the helmets uh the new
08:28classic burgundy helmet gold face mask the stripes down the middle baby and and the the new black
08:34hail razor helmet which has that spear logo involved mark i gotta ask was there any conversation about
08:41putting the spear on both helmets yeah so you know one of the things that that we feel you know
08:48and
08:48and and believe is very important is that we are on a journey right and and we're we're going to
08:54be
08:55thoughtful and purposeful and and how we think about uh bringing these these things to fans and
09:01listening to them um we just felt like it was a great platform on this reimagination of our alternative
09:08black uniform love hail razor think it brings the energy the dq is bringing to the football side actually
09:15a lot of what we do um we do kind of shoulder to shoulder with football make sure that it
09:21matches and
09:22feels like it fits what they're doing and we just thought it was a great kind of that burst of
09:26energy for the alternate
09:27uniform we're going to continue to think about how do we you know bring more elements of our heritage forward
09:34and and we'll keep working on that but for right now we're excited about it being on the uh alternate
09:39and
09:40giving us that kind of special uh push when we need it i like the word hail razor i was
09:44given that people
09:45called me a few times in my life why am i not surprised why do i imagine that one landed
09:52well
09:52with you i think what are i don't know this at all right but i know dealing with the nfl
09:59this huge
10:00you know multinational multi-billion dollar entity like what are the procedures to change things and
10:07what is that timeline how long it takes it can't be overnight no no it takes time
10:23partners we've got nike riddell um the the league's experience but it is a process and so
10:31um what's important i think about this is that we spent time together as a group with josh and the
10:38ownership and the team and tried to understand where the destination is so that anything that
10:45we're doing along the way feel feels like it's building toward um you know kind of that final
10:51position and so it takes time right to lay that out and build it and so you got to always
10:56be thinking
10:57about what's coming down the pipe and you know we're we continue to do that but for right now
11:01we feel like this is a really important milestone you know on that journey like i have a lot of
11:08spots on my wall how quick will we be able to get a number 30 mitchell
11:14i'm sure we can work that out we got a good spot for it we know some people we can
11:19uh we can work
11:20that out mark i think you'll laugh at this so mark was kind enough and the whole team from the
11:25commanders that has arrived they brought in the burgundy helmet the black helmet a terry mclaurin
11:30burgundy jersey jersey jersey as well at a jayden daniels black number five jersey our uh intrepid
11:37producer jeff that you see right there running the board it used to be 270 yeah 280 he he has
11:42already put in our group text thread i call dibs on black jd5 jersey if we could take one and
11:48it can't
11:48fit y'all just to let you know those jerseys are gonna be in a frame like this in the
11:52studio yeah
11:53nothing for nothing but i'm watching him it's already in his back that thing's gone man i think's
11:58god we're gonna have to bring in some other ones we gotta get it framed up like this and all
12:03that
