00:00A question I get asked a lot is, why don't you just have surgery to fix it?
00:05And my answer is, it's not that simple.
00:08I'm in England, we have a National Health Service, NHS.
00:14I don't have private insurance.
00:16So for me to pay out of pocket, either in England or go abroad,
00:21it would cost me thousands and thousands and thousands, which I don't have.
00:25I've travelled before for surgery, I've had complications before.
00:30With surgery, and almost died.
00:32I don't want to put my husband and my family through that again, if it can be helped.
00:36The NHS has massive waiting lists, that's if they will fix it.
00:42I've currently been told by two doctors that they can't fix it.
00:47I need a specialist to fix the muscle.
00:50What a hernia actually is.
00:52Hi, my name's Amy and I have a big old hernia on my belly.
00:57So I thought it'd be interesting to just briefly talk about what a hernia is.
01:02A hernia is when part of your organ, usually bowels, comes through a hole in your muscle or soft tissue.
01:12That's it.
01:13My hernia is an incisional hernia, because I got it through surgery.
01:17It can be harmless.
01:18All hernias are different, everybody's situation is different, and just because somebody you
01:24know's had their hernia fixed, doesn't mean somebody else can get theirs fixed.
01:27Hi, I'm Amy and I've got giant hernia, and one thing I've realised recently, is I can't
01:33suck my spinokin at me, and I know why, because the muscles are there, and they're damaged.
01:38It's just so weird, I can't show you.
01:40So I used to be able to breathe in.
01:42I can't do that.
01:45Bit weird, isn't it?
