00:00Mr. Kennedy, I give you the honor of experiencing my power firsthand.
00:08Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're taking a look at 10 bosses in games that really should have been the
00:16final boss.
00:24Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to MojoPlays and ring the
00:30bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:33Ravis, Star Wars Jedi Survivor
00:41For many, Ravis was the coolest Star Wars villain we had seen since General Grievous.
00:47He had a compelling story, a kickass boss fight, everything.
00:52Unfortunately, Respawn Entertainment decided he wasn't good enough to serve as the final boss, for some reason.
00:58Instead, we get a pretty disappointing fight with Bodakuna, which ends up making Jedi Survivor end on a whimper.
01:14Seriously, after all of that build up and focus on Ravis, what part of Respawn thought the guy should take
01:20a backseat for yet another betrayal and another dude with a lightsaber?
01:31Girohim, The Legend of Zelda, Skyward Sword
01:43Skyward Sword suffers a similar problem as another entry that we'll get to later.
01:48The game spends quite a bit of time letting Ghirahim ambush you, tease you, mock you, and, you know, be
01:55an overall nuisance.
01:56Somewhat menacing, but a nuisance nonetheless.
01:59It almost seemed like we weren't going to tread tired ground for once.
02:03Then, he summons the supposed Demon King, and we got hit with a wave of fatigue.
02:16Yep, the monster named Demise, who we all know is actually Ganon, appears, and ends the game the same way
02:24we've seen since 1986.
02:27Think we'll ever get a new Zelda villain to serve as the final boss for once?
02:35Spooky! Pac-Man World 2 Repack.
02:47In the original Pac-Man World 2, yes, Spooky is the final boss of the game.
02:53Beat him, and you're done.
02:54For some reason, Bandai Namco Entertainment decided to let the remake of World 2 overstay its welcome by throwing in
03:01a secret boss, Talkman, and an entire post-game portion featuring even harder versions of the game's boss.
03:09Rich! But I'll remind you with a taste of my real power!
03:14Dude, this game was already obscenely difficult between Blinky's Robot Spider, the underwater levels, and some other annoyances.
03:22To sit there and say,
03:25Ah, ah, ah, your journey isn't done yet, the Pac-Kids have been kidnapped.
03:29No, BNE.
03:30Never do this to any remake ever again.
03:33You.
03:34Blackguard.
03:36Traitor!
03:36Dr. N-Tropy, Crash Bandicoot 4, It's About Time.
03:43Let's see what you mongrels can do as a Pac-
03:48Cortex is a bumbling idiot.
03:50That's no secret.
03:52Dr. N-Tropy, on the other hand, is cold, calculating, and cunning.
03:56So much so that he and his Fem-Tropy counterpart seemed like they would be a real threat.
04:02The middle portion of the game even sets things up to make it seem like these two were going to
04:07be the main antagonists for the rest of the game.
04:10What's the matter? Unable to handle even the simplest of tasks?
04:15But, for whatever reason they had, developer Toys for Bob couldn't help themselves,
04:20and they weaseled Cortex back in as the final boss at the very last minute.
04:27It wasn't an awful boss fight, but it definitely felt a bit like a cop-out.
04:32No! No! No! No! Don't!
04:37The Con Maker
04:39Doom Eternal
04:41Who are you, a human, once a mortal, to defy our traditions?
04:55Now, the Icon of Sin was far from being one of the worst boss fights in Doom's history.
05:01Even so, we can't help but feel like the Khan Maker should have been the final boss here.
05:07After all, it's her and the Makers that pretty much tried to eradicate all of humanity.
05:22Plus, the fight against the Khan Maker felt more like an intense duel,
05:27whereas the Icon of Sin was more or less a recycle of the same boss fight in Doom 2 Hell
05:34on Earth.
05:34Yeah, that's essentially what Eternal is in level design and narrative,
05:38but still, it makes the story fall a bit flat.
05:49Final Fantasy IX
05:57For the first 40 hours or so, it seemed as if we had yet another Kefka kind of character here.
06:04Like the clownish court mage, Kuja wasn't exactly some all-encompassing, malevolent deity.
06:11He was just a really strong sorcerer that was clever and cunning enough to really bring an end to the
06:17world.
06:17But after all that time spent chasing him, and fighting him,
06:21Square had to go the usual JRPG route,
06:24and have us fight a god, because that's how all JRPGs need to end apparently.
06:35We understand it's to tie into the narrative's themes of dread, emptiness, and existentialism.
06:41Regardless, Necron just appearing out of nowhere came off more like a rule set for the plot,
06:47was suddenly remembered midway into writing the story.
06:56Literally anybody else.
06:59Mortal Kombat 1
07:01A bold gambit, princess.
07:04It is an impressive display of guile.
07:07Who knew she was so capable?
07:10Mortal Kombat 1 was supposed to be a fresh start for the series.
07:14It was stated several times during marketing,
07:17reinforced by calling the game Mortal Kombat 1,
07:20and cemented for the first few chapters of the story.
07:24Then Liu Kang presumes that somebody is messing with the timeline,
07:28and that person is the Shang Tsung from MK11.
07:33You're not Dimashie.
07:35You're me.
07:37More correctly,
07:38you are me.
07:40A poor facsimile, anyway.
07:43Made lesser by Liu Kang's medley.
07:46So you mean to tell us,
07:47that Mortal Kombat 1 is actually Mortal Kombat 12?
07:52We're still in the same story arc?
07:54This felt like a cheap plot twist meant only so that they could squeeze in fan service
08:00as it rushed through retreading beats from Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon.
08:06Really, the story would have been better if Kronika turned out to be some entity
08:10that just can't die and was trying to reverse the timeline back to what she wanted.
08:15Or, you know,
08:17a new take on the series like we were told?
08:20Goodbye, Liu Kang.
08:23Neither you nor your timeline will be missed.
08:29Xeno.
08:30Resident Evil Requiem.
08:33So,
08:35the prodigal daughter returns.
08:37Okay, sure,
08:38maybe we're cheating a bit because Xeno was never a boss fight to begin with.
08:42Instead,
08:42he had Mr. X fight in his place.
08:44But we got an issue with how Capcom handled Xeno.
08:48This guy
08:49should have been the final boss of RE9.
08:52After all,
08:53this is one of the many Wesker clones wandering around the world.
08:56And there were a couple of times
08:57where he boasted the same amount of power that Wesker had.
09:01Do you know
09:02how much time and money I wasted on this?
09:06Don't you see the genius?
09:08I'm sorry,
09:09but there is no way in hell that somebody of this magnitude
09:12can easily be killed off by the likes of Victor Gideon.
09:16It's over, Victor.
09:17The Connections is done with you!
09:24Instead of a showdown with Xeno,
09:26we basically experienced a dumbed-down version of Nemesis from RE3.
09:31The Harbinger.
09:32Mass Effect 2.
09:37I am assuming direct control.
09:44Much like Xeno, Kuja, and Ravis,
09:47the Harbinger suffers the problem of,
09:49here's this really cool villain for you to dig
09:51that we're just going to toss away like a candy bar wrapper
09:54because that isn't the point of the story.
09:56Let's call it the carrot-on-a-stick-tagonist.
09:59Mass Effect 2 spends so much time setting up the Harbinger
10:02as this supremely intelligent leader.
10:05Fitting for the oldest Reaper to ever live.
10:08Human,
10:09you've changed nothing.
10:11Your species has the attention of those infinitely or greater.
10:16Well,
10:16you ain't gonna fight him.
10:17You're gonna fight some dude
10:19who is also a Reaper,
10:21somewhat,
10:22to fight on his behalf.
10:23Okay,
10:24well,
10:24maybe we'll be able to fight the Harbinger in Mass Effect 3?
10:28Not on your life support.
10:40General Scales.
10:42Star Fox Adventures.
10:44You may have returned for Spellstones,
10:47but the war is not over yet.
10:50Now,
10:50you must face me.
10:53For the entire game,
10:55Star Fox Adventures has made it clear
10:57that General Scales is the main threat of the game.
11:01We're done with Andross.
11:02Here's a new bad guy for the franchise
11:04that is just as vicious as he was.
11:07Well,
11:08at the very last minute,
11:10when Fox returns the final Kruzoa's spirit,
11:13we got the rug pulled.
11:15Stop!
11:17Scales!
11:18You are no longer any use to me!
11:21Just kidding!
11:22Ha-ha!
11:23Andross has been alive,
11:24and General Scales was actually his puppet the entire time.
11:27Players were not thrilled with this last-second villain swap.
11:31Not only did it make no sense whatsoever,
11:34but it was such an anticlimactic way
11:36to end Fox and Crystal's journey,
11:38especially when it looked like Scales
11:40could have gained the upper hand.
11:42But sure,
11:43let's just replay Star Fox 64 for the hell of it,
11:46you know?
11:52Was there a boss you felt would have been better to close out a game?
