00:05hello and welcome to bargain hunt we all love a trip to the pictures don't we and there's
00:10something very special about the nostalgic high street cinemas of the past one man loved his
00:16local cinema so much that he built one just like it in his back garden
00:25I'll be finding out all about that later I do think this isn't a horror film I'm not very keen
00:31on horror films to be perfectly honest but for now let's go bargain hunting
01:00today's reds and blues will be hunting for bargains at this packed antique center in Derbyshire you
01:07know the rules by now each of our teams will have 300 pounds and just a one hour to find
01:12three items
01:12to take to auction one must cost at least 75 pounds and then of course there's my challenge to consider
01:18when their items are sold the team that makes the biggest profit or smallest loss wins let's meet
01:25today's teams I'm Karen I'm Claire we're history hunters and we're here to dig up some profits
01:33intriguing what are your hobbies so I do metal detecting is your sisterly bond going to help
01:40with your shop don't know what antiques are you interested in mid-century furniture and stuff I
01:48can repurpose and reuse in the garden will you beat the blues oh absolutely 100% fighting talk
01:55let's meet your competition I'm Sharon I'm Margaret we're super shoppers and we're here to splash the
02:03cash more sisters are you singing from the same hymn sheet we're all right with what we both like so
02:11luckily we won't argue do you know much about antiques I used to live in France they've got
02:17fantastic broccans and depauvent so what's on the shopping list gold preferably yes and precious
02:23stones let's get this battle of the sisters started hello team how are you feeling lucky okay all right
02:34excited well before you get on with it what are we going to need first money money you're absolutely
02:40right who is going to have the money on the red team Karen Karen there we go what about over
02:45on the
02:45blues it's going to be Sharon there we go Sharon thank you hey who's up for the challenge on the
02:49reds Claire Claire's up for the challenge of course yes and what about over on the blues that'd be
02:54Margaret it's gotta be Margaret there we go now we've got two cracking experts for you today are you ready
02:59guys yes yes okay off you go enjoy but what are they looking for in their experts somebody who's
03:07patient someone who's got a really keen eye and someone who's gonna get as a profit hello for the
03:16reds it's Izzy Barmer and most of all someone who's fun definitely fun fun fun fun and for the blues
03:25it's
03:26Nick Hall time to check out those challenges oh piece of antique furniture an item with a French
03:34connection oh time to turn out some profits teams your time starts now yeah well let's go go go
03:46butter gets set for a smooth shop and it's clear from the off that the red team shares similar tastes
03:54we both got that bars in green is that something you'd be interested in getting or not really I'd be
04:01interested but not for that amount okay decisive meanwhile the blues have found some locally produced
04:08porcelain this is Royal Crown Derby and these are little paperweights yeah and they are very collectible
04:14well I do like this what do you think about its silent auction do they go well they do do
04:19well I mean
04:19it's quite modern in the world of Derby of course I mean Royal Crown Derby but the Derby factory goes
04:24back to the 18th century I know these often come with original boxes collectors like things like
04:29that also underneath it should have a little bung in it yes so that's there and they come in different
04:34colors gold silver how much is that one priced up 45 pounds that's about what they make at auction
04:41this is Adele who runs what sort of a haggle could you have on that well it would be 10
04:48% off really so
04:50that take us down to 40 pounds and 50 pence so certainly 40 pounds for me I'd want to be
04:57buying it
04:57for say 25 25 yeah make 35 you got a tenner in your pot I think we'll say no yeah
05:05keep hunting do the
05:08reds have their challenge in mind might be simpler I like this that's really nice yes nice it's a
05:16little stool isn't it yeah beautiful carved oak stool just being devil's advocate because it's a tiny
05:24stall do we think it counts as furniture I think it looks like something you need along you're
05:29thinking like a personal I like it but I think we might see something better do you think it's 32
05:35I don't think I'd want to pay that much for no no you wouldn't the stool is a no for
05:41now back to
05:42the blues who are reflecting on their challenge just a mirror over there and I'm just wondering if
05:49that would help with our French connection it's definitely a French mirror isn't it my only worry
05:53is it might be a reproduction yes such a grand thing it looks quite perfect yeah I mean close if
05:59it is period then you know it could be a really good find right what do we got here so
06:04okay I'm
06:06looking at the back ladies yeah and it's telling me it's quite modern it's a reproduction see the
06:13front is made to look like a 19th century French mirror yeah they don't bother to make the back look
06:18like it's a hundred years old so the back is the dead giveaway you've got this almost sort of like
06:24a cardboard cover so it's a modern replica and it's got a price ticket on it of 225 pounds which
06:32for a 19th century mirror is a steal the reproduction is a gamble yes and we're not willing to take
06:37that
06:37yet there's plenty of time a wooden truck has attracted the reds what drew you to it Karen first
06:45of all it was the writing but then you look at it and I like this iron work here but
06:51I think this could
06:51be really practical for me I'd buy this put it on the kitchen window put some herbs in I think
06:57it'd
06:57be really nice really nice yeah and advertising is really popular I love that it says sprats on
07:02the side yeah how much is it oh 15 pounds I quite like it do you get a bit of
07:11money off it there
07:12might be a small profit nice no Julie we're really interested in this box we love the writing and we
07:18think it's really pretty box you've got 15 pounds on it well that sounds like a bargain yeah I would
07:25like you do a little bit I can tweak a little bit couple of pounds maybe that's okay so what
07:30you say
07:31about 11 pounds so 12 is probably the best weekend okay yes you're happy do it you're happy very
07:37thank you very much thank you very much thank you well done reds at 12 pounds the wooden truck gets
07:43you up and running congratulations I didn't take as long did it just 13 minutes now how are the blues
07:53doing you see a pearl as big as that it's huge Tahitian pearls set in 80 count white gold with
08:00diamonds on a nine
08:01carat gold chain 495 but we haven't got 495 pounds I'd have to give you a loan to buy that
08:08so that's the
08:11sort of thing that'd be great but we can't afford it no you can't blues put it back Nick and
08:17the reds
08:18are still thinking about their antique furniture challenge Izzy what about this here it's lovely
08:26isn't it is this antique yes I would say it's turn of the century is it a church pew having
08:33this possibly
08:34the good news is it's an arts and crafts Glastonbury chair and there are two more available okay bad news
08:39is it's 220 pounds just for that one for the one oh no I think we'll leave that won't we
08:46Claire
08:48wise decision the blues are sticking with jewelry so we'll go here it's made of nine carat gold which
08:54is a great start and you've got this lovely garnet set in the middle so as an object what do
08:59you think
08:59about that ladies I think it's really nice I'm just a bit iffy on the chain it's very very fine
09:04yes it
09:05is isn't it yeah I mean that's beautiful I mean it's very wearable isn't it yeah yeah sort of thing
09:10you
09:11would wear on a night at any local cocktail lounge absolutely definitely what do we think about the
09:16price 195 well if I'm honest I think it's a lot of money for the amount of gold the amount
09:22of gold
09:22it's another no the reds already have one in the bag and they're very focused so we're looking for
09:29antique furniture and hopefully the big spend this is quite nice Claire what do you think of this plant
09:35stand do you want the posh name for it yeah at all share at all share yeah sounds like tall
09:41chair
09:43it's French all right how much is it 88 pounds would tick your big spend but you're gonna have
09:49to buy it for 75 pounds so that's not a big discount no but I can't see it making that
09:54to auction no okay
09:56no it's fast let's go so while they keep searching the blues still need their first buy and they found
10:03more jewelry so there's one more ring in here that I think caught your eye yes didn't there was it
10:08that
10:08big elliptical one it is yes I think it says 14 karat gold okay 595 ouch okay 595 pounds so
10:17again
10:17that is going to be well out of our price range oh blues stick to what you can afford meanwhile
10:25the reds
10:25have spotted a quirky jug about this is it well isn't it do you like cats not really but I
10:32like
10:33the box because of the colors yeah it's got a very cool shape to it as well yeah hand-painted
10:39but again
10:40a kitchen item maybe hand-painted by milson and louisa I mean it's very modern isn't it it doesn't
10:47always have to have a like it's there 65 I don't think we get any profit from 65 okay shall
10:53we park it
10:54again another one another one in the car park it's filling up are the blues are finally making
11:01progress do you know what I really like about this brooch is the label because it says French it's
11:07yellow metal with yeah and they're gonna be pearls or seed pearls aha as if by magic the shopkeeper
11:14repeats thank you so much there's some really pretty things in here so do we know how the dealer knows
11:24that this is French well this dealer is French it says 18 pounds trade one on that so 17 pound
11:31would
11:31be a best price on that really good work the brooch for 16 pounds is the blues first buy but
11:48with no
11:49markings or proof that it's definitely French their hunt for a challenge item continues halfway through
11:56now teams how's it going reds have you seen something I'm just looking at this Bible they
12:02don't sell at okay really early and got some lovely hand-painted pictures in that sort of Bible most
12:10auction houses wouldn't even take so 10 to 20 would be your best on a good day okay that's done
12:16then
12:17I'm clearly looking for the wrong things here this is not good time to think tactics reds a little bit
12:24tricky to be honest we saw stuff really well but the first act and got that within a couple of
12:28minutes yeah but we've been trying to combine it haven't we it's a big spend with the furniture I
12:33think we need to look at the strategy again while the reds refocus some garden helia has caught Nick's
12:40eye these are brand-new reproduction yeah but they've got a nice look if you put them in the garden
12:45for
12:45six months yeah look to you yeah 59 the pair pairs of things always yeah well as a better
12:53somebody gate posting yeah I know I just saw you completely and and lions are popular things within
12:59sort of antiques and art and in history in general let's get Adele and see what what could
13:05be done price right so we're looking at these pair of stone lines well until they're not very old no
13:10I'm not sure she'd do you any trade on those to be fair that will be a best price so
13:15what do you
13:15think they'd do at auction now I think they could do all right you know we still haven't bought our
13:20big
13:20spend item so that's okay in it yeah yeah yeah can we have them we've if you want them go
13:26on yes
13:28well tell this lady not me having those yes yes thank you the stone lions for 59 pounds take them
13:36one ahead of the reds who are looking at a vase oh I love the bamboo right let's get it
13:42out let's
13:43check for damage I'd buy that you know well I wouldn't want us to buy it at 35 West German
13:51pottery heaps of it made in the 1970s everyone thought it was the thing to buy they thought it
13:55was going to be really collectible in the future didn't quite get there that being said people do
14:02like a West German vase because they're decorative they're visual you get a lot for your money but I
14:07love the bamboo and that aesthetic movement influence to it I think it would look great
14:11with some flowers or just as a decorative item are you happy the conditions good I can't see any
14:16chips why don't we get Julie to give us a best price yeah yeah we need to buy something don't
14:21we buy
14:22this we are tying ourselves in for our challenge item to also be the big spend
14:25shall we go look at the furniture and then maybe we can run back for this good plan reds and
14:33it
14:33looks like the blues are returning to their French connection challenge well the label is quite
14:39interesting it says stunning art deco period French girl with parrot bronze statue after Paul Philippe so
14:49if this is a known design by Paul Philippe then we know it's French and that's the connection that's
14:56the connection also it's the big spend and it's priced at the moment at 165 pounds now if it was
15:03a
15:03reproduction I'd say that's a bit expensive they're suggesting its period ie 1930s in which case it will
15:10make 150 250 pounds or thereabouts we've got another one here's French swimming beauty figure by
15:18Jack Lamo song if we had a look underneath and we could be sure yeah it was definitely French so
15:25we
15:25know we've got the French connection and potentially do something on the price yeah then it would be our
15:33big spend and a definite French connection so we know we're safe best to check good luck and the
15:41reds are targeting their furniture challenge it's definitely antique it's Victorian it's a wash stand
15:46so you've got your wash bowl here you'd also actually have a jug and sometimes you can sort of like
15:51a
15:51little soap dish with it so the jug you'd perhaps put below and you'd bring out you know in the
15:56mornings
15:57you just pour in some freezing cold water which in the winter often there's ice and you have to smash
16:02the ice you pour in splash your face do your daily ablutions I'm not 100 pound you're not going to
16:09see anywhere near that adoption so we would want to get as much off as we possibly can I'm just
16:15thinking
16:15at this stage we need an item I really like that I really do what do you like about it
16:21I just like
16:22the fact that it's it just is speaks of an era and the way that that is how life was
16:28back in those
16:29days and I like you know it's just a good memory of what used to be yeah I think we
16:34should see what
16:34it can be at 78 that's the best you can do I think I'd like another shifty round just see
16:40okay we're not
16:41missing anything do you mind Julie no that's absolutely fine I understand that that's okay thank
16:45you very much quick quick the clock is ticking are the blues any closer to meeting my French connection
16:52challenge we've got these two now what do you think about the two of them do you have a preference
17:01initially oh yeah London mold metals limited yeah now that's going to cause even more of an issue so
17:14I think we're probably going to although it says French connection to the connection is the name the
17:19limousine created the original one of these yeah it was made in London yeah but the original one was
17:27made in France by a Frenchman so this says a statue after Paul Philippe yeah so when it says after
17:34that
17:34just means it wasn't the actual sculptor the artist that produced that object right it was taken from a
17:40mold of his work by a another one six five is the original asking price I mean we can ask
17:47what is
17:47the best price yeah it's probably a safer bet than the other one so the swimming figure is out but
17:54the
17:54girl with a parrot is a maybe and after their hunt around the reds are heading back to the washstand
18:07washstand found but can you strike a better deal hi Julie we're back oh good yes um so we really
18:15are
18:15interested in this um is there any possibility of going to 75 I did have a little word with him
18:21afterwards after he said 78 and he has agreed to 75 great job reds at 75 pounds the Victorian washstand
18:32meets my antique furniture challenge and the big spend now we need to get a third item oh yeah the
18:40bars as they rush back for that the blues are getting a better price on the figure yeah I found
18:51it an alternative there's another piece of art deco sculptures labelled French here that's nice superb
18:57genuine French antique art deco period lady marble base by Le Marais of Paris so what do we think about
19:06this one compared to the others we've looked at is that the weight of the marble do you think
19:11making it feel so heavy I mean this will be spelt or not bronze so it's hollow yeah it'll be
19:17hollow I mean
19:18to me that's really nice and old so stylistically between the two do you have a favorite I mean we
19:24could see what the best is and then when we've got the best on this is one two five if
19:29we try 95 on
19:31that one we're gonna try 95 okay we can ask can't we like you can work I love it if
19:38you can get it to
19:40two figures rather than three yeah thank you fingers crossed meanwhile the Reds are revisiting
19:50the West German pottery vase Julie this is the vase that we like okay if you'd like to show me
19:56thank
19:57you Julie we have noticed it's on a shelf that says 40% off all marked prices yes well that
20:03makes
20:04that 21 pounds the best I could possibly go to is 20 okay it should be 21 I can't do
20:10any less
20:10I can't do 19 I know it's a really cheeky offer but they go up and down in multiples of
20:1610 and that
20:17pound might make the difference I do realize that but it's a very nice item and it is 40%
20:23off already I
20:24really should sell it for 21 and I've gone down to 20 I'm taking another pound off I don't really
20:28go any lower I'm sorry okay I'll be happy at 20 yeah yeah yeah absolutely thank you Julie thank you
20:34almost dropped it and that's the Reds all shopped up well done three items didn't think we were gonna
20:43get there I knew we would right Blues you need to make that French connection which statue are you
20:50gonna go for and she's agreed the two figures at 99 pounds is the lowest she'll go but we've got
20:57the two figures okay two figures five or 99 all ladies we've got two minutes left it's kind of boiled
21:04down to these last two minutes these last two figures and I'm rubbish what are your two thoughts this one
21:10that one you sure yes final choice yes shake Adele's hand thank you
21:27with your big spend hats off to you teams your shopping is over
21:36I'm off to France now for something red in a glass
21:43let's remind ourselves what the red team bought for 12 pounds the wooden advertising truck was their first buy
21:53they combined the big spend and my antique furniture challenge splashing out 75 pounds on this Victorian washstand
22:03and the West German pottery vase with bamboo decoration at 20 pounds completed their shop
22:11Karen and Claire how are you feeling okay yeah just have to wait and see won't we but I don't
22:18I really don't know how we've done to be honest
22:20now tell me what was your favorite item that you purchased so I liked the the wash stand it's also
22:27your challenge I challenge you to find an item of furniture which is not easy
22:31yeah it was really hard to be struggled with that yeah but not only that your piece of furniture was
22:37also your big spend
22:38yeah so really well done what about you Karen what was your favorite mine was the first one the Billingsgate
22:43Sprat box I just thought it was a good looking item it's something I'd buy what do you think is
22:48gonna make you the most profit Claire
22:49I think it will be the jog the the vase sorry super what about you I'm the same the German
22:55vase yeah yeah
22:56now tell me what did you spend in total 107 so that means somebody's got 193 pounds to hand over
23:03to Izzy
23:03yeah that's me yeah don't forget the three very important thank you yeah might make all the difference
23:08what are you gonna do with that is you two have been so bold and vibrant so I'd really like
23:12to get something
23:13that reflects both of your personalities oh I think that's nice
23:21well Izzy goes bonus by shopping let's remind ourselves what the blue team boards
23:27first they spent 16 pounds on the pretty costume brooch set with simulated pearls
23:34for 59 pounds they fell for the contemporary stone sleeping lions
23:40and for their big spend and French connection challenge they bought this art deco style figure
23:46for 99 pounds
23:50Margaret and Sharon how did it go very well didn't it yeah
23:57very quick what was your favorite purchase today um the two lions that I think they go on top of
24:03gate
24:03posts or something like that but I know they were new but I really liked them okay cool what about
24:07you
24:08Sharon what was your favorite I'm going to go with the vintage brooch what do you think is gonna make
24:13you the most money now I'm hoping it's gonna be the lions oh she's sticking to a lion yeah yeah
24:18she is all right what about you Sharon I'm sticking to the brooch okay so talk to me about your
24:24challenge
24:25because it was challenging wasn't it yes it was yes so we did have two items we've got trying to
24:31make our mind up two statues yeah and then while we're standing waiting for yeah Dale to come back
24:35with price Nick noticed another one in the cupboard it was also your big spend yes now tell me what
24:41did
24:41you spend in total 174 pounds so that means one of you's got 126 pounds but to hand over to
24:48Nick
24:48that's Sharon just check it Nick brilliant Nick what is your plan with that I think a good old auction
24:57classic good while Nick is off bonus by shopping I've been to visit a man with something really
25:02rather unusual at the bottom of his garden for many of us Saturday night is all about the glitz and
25:14the glamour of a trip to the cinema the smells and sounds of the foyer the buzz of the crowd
25:21the
25:22lights going down in the theatre and the curtains opening if only there was a way to recreate the
25:29magic in your own home well one man did just that he built a replica of his local cinema right
25:36here in
25:37his back garden bus driver Andy Jones lives in Stoke-on-Trent and his story is one that Hollywood
25:48script writers would be proud of hi Andy this is incredible not what you expect to find at the end
25:58of the garden well the actual cinema is 40 foot long it's 22 foot wide and it's 20 foot tall
26:04right
26:05yeah I actually built it myself you built it yourself yeah the whole thing what you see now I all
26:12built
26:12myself it took me five years to build it did it it's a cost of 70,000 pounds oh my
26:17goodness wow but
26:19well worth it though what I wanted to do was try and create a cinema that was from the 1930s
26:25and then brought up to the 70s so it was like it's refurbished in the 1970s yeah and it's still
26:31got like
26:31old features in there like the exit signs the toilet signs I've got a full concession desk with all my
26:37sweets and popcorn this sounds like a complete labor of love it really does where has this come
26:43from yeah when I was younger my nan was an usherette at my local cinema and my mum and dad
26:50actually took
26:51me to it I was I just fell in love with the cinema it was amazing the whole experience and
26:56we actually
26:56did build a cinema in my back bedroom of my dad's house oh really me and my granddad and my
27:01dad used
27:01to go around old cinemas and collecting old things because obviously they kept modernizing things so
27:07the old things would be chucked in a store cupboard so I'd be like oh can I have that or
27:11can I you know
27:12and salvage things and save thing from posters to light switches Andy has been collecting original cinema
27:21fixtures and fittings since the age of six and the end result is what you see today and where have
27:28all
27:28the pieces come from because there's some incredible things in here most of the stuff actually came
27:33from the ABC in Hanley which was my local cinema right but there is about 10 different cinemas in
27:39here different items so like the radiators that are on the wall they come from Doncaster Odeon I've
27:45got door returns they're from different cinemas up and down the country and about three storage units
27:51but all the seats in the cinema actually were in the loft oh it was nice to think that the
27:58ceiling
27:58wasn't going to collapse in anymore the main attraction of course is Andy's 30-seater auditorium
28:08this is quite extraordinary talk me through the fixtures and fittings in this room basically all the
28:14seats come from my local ABC when before it was demolished in the projection room that's in a
28:20mechanical Vic 4 projector which came from a cinema in Birmingham the carpet is exactly the same as ABC
28:26I sent a sample off and a company said yeah they could remake this for me it cost me a
28:32few thousand
28:33pounds but well worth it it's amazing it really is it strikes me Andy that you don't do this for
28:39your own joy you do it actually to see the joy in other people's faces oh yeah every time that
28:46I've
28:46had a group come as soon as they come through that archway and they see the cinema they're just all
28:51blown away they're amazed of what I've actually built Andy will often invite groups to the cinema to
29:00raise money for charity when they come in and watch a film that they just they can't thank me enough
29:05it's
29:06just bringing about that memories of a good old 70s cinema and the showmanship as well you just
29:12don't get that now to a normal multi-packs they tell me given the choice if this was Andy cinema
29:18day what would be on the screen definitely back to the future back to the future oh good choice very
29:25good choice thank you so much for allowing us to time travel in this iconic cinema it's amazing
29:32you're welcome thank you but now it's time to see whether our teams can make their own very
29:36Hollywood style ending over at the auction we've traveled to Bamford's in Derby where James Lewis is
29:45our auctioneer James what a pleasure it is to join you here in your sale room welcome here well thank
29:53you now shall we start with our red team yes so we have Claire and Karen that went shopping with
29:59Izzy Bahama okay now their first purchase was this little trug here hmm what do we think of that I
30:05think it's got a great look to it and advertising is so popular at the moment but it's not got
30:12a lot
30:12of age but it has a great look now they paid 12 pounds for it oh that's fine yeah what's
30:17your estimate
30:18yeah I've put well less than 20 well now let's move on to their second purchase which was Claire's
30:24favourite okay it was their big spend and I challenged them to find a piece of antique furniture
30:30I think it's great I you know I love this period it's Victorian it's 150 years old I've put 20
30:37to 30
30:38on it because that's what the market says well they paid 75 pounds for it let's move on to their
30:43final
30:44item which they both think is going to make them the most profit it is of course this German pottery
30:49vans what is it 1960s I guess something like that 60s 70s estimate of less than 20 okay well they
30:57paid
30:5720 pounds for it let's move over to our blue team Sharon and Margaret who went shopping with Nick Hall
31:02now their first purchase was the simulated pearl or costume jewelry brooch at the front it's stylish
31:10but there's not a lot of quality to it but hey from a distance it looks the part yes so
31:16what have I put on
31:17that less than 20 pounds they paid 16 pounds for it okay well yeah but let's see let's move on
31:23to
31:23their second purchase which these lines are very familiar to me they are of course modeled on Canova's
31:30great chats with yes aren't they you know with a bit of weathering outside these would look quite
31:35sweet 30 to 50 pounds they paid 59 pounds okay I've got a hope for them let's move on to
31:41their final
31:42purchase which was their big spend and their challenge to find an item with a French connection
31:48and I think we can safely say that's French can't we definitely French I'm very stylish very French I
31:55think it's probably late 30s 40 pounds hmm well they went all out and they paid 99 pounds for her
