Could the Commanders look at the CB prospect?
Transcript
00:00And we're calling it 10 prospects in 10 days as we count down to the NFL draft.
00:23All right, Danny, as we often do, we spin a wheel.
00:29Break down a player.
00:30You want to go offense or defense today?
00:32What are you hoping the wheel lands on?
00:33I want another defensive player because that's what the top 10 is populated by a lot of good defenders.
00:38Spin that wheel, Daris.
00:50Mansoor Delane, cornerback, LSU.
00:56First down, Klobmick in traffic, delivers a pick.
01:00He threw it over the head of the receiver.
01:02And Mansoor Delane with LSU's first takeaway tonight.
01:09And the ball batted in the air and intercepted.
01:12Deflected off the edge and picked off by Harold Perkins.
01:17Mansoor Delane, the lockdown corner, got a piece of it.
01:23Green throws and it's intercepted.
01:26He threw it right to Mansoor Delane.
01:33Mansoor Delane, Silver Spring, Maryland native.
01:36Senior out of LSU.
01:38Started his college career at Virginia Tech.
01:40Six foot three and 187 pounds.
01:4330 inch arms.
01:45He's got ball skills, man.
01:47This is an athlete.
01:48He's limbed, loose-limbed and limmy.
01:51Highly athletic and efficient.
01:53The movements are very fluid.
01:54He just looks like a ball-hawking, playmaking cornerback.
01:59If you look at weaknesses, NFL.com draft report.
02:02They say he plays tall in space.
02:04Limited transition quickness.
02:05Can be baited by clever route combinations in deep zone.
02:09Aggressive hand usage to redirect.
02:11The measurables are not elite, Danny.
02:14His weight is 27th percentile.
02:16Hand size is 26th percentile.
02:18He's not long.
02:20Arm length, 13th percentile.
02:22But I care about height at corner as well.
02:24And he's above average at 5'11 and change right at 6 foot.
02:28Wingspan of 74 inches, again, is not elite.
02:30But I think he possesses plenty of traits to go along with.
02:34Unbelievable speed.
02:36Didn't run at the combine, which I don't get.
02:38If you're blazingly fast, run at the combine, man.
02:40I'll run everywhere, sure.
02:41He ran at his pro day and ran a 4'3", 6'40".
02:43And that was when he kind of locked himself in to the top 10 to 12 or so.
02:47I just think the tape at LSU is excellent.
02:51This guy can play football.
02:53Nobody talks about him to Washington, really.
02:55But if they take him, I'll be fine.
02:57I'll be happy.
02:57Yeah, a sharp football analysis.
02:59Our guy Warren Sharp, his latest mock, has that very thing happening.
03:01So I initially was a, I don't love him at 7 kind of person.
03:05Because of what you just mentioned, the athleticism.
03:07Now, obviously, listen, this is all relative.
03:09If we're talking about one of the world-class athletes.
03:11But among the position, you know, to be drafted in the top 10, I want the, even if you're wrong,
03:15you're right kind of cornerback.
03:17Right?
03:17Where this is a guy that's, as you said, is physical, sticky in man coverage, smart, good ball skills, good
03:23player.
03:24His pro comp was Quinion Mitchell.
03:26You could do a lot worse than that.
03:27But in the top of the top, I want the, oh crap, I got beat, but I still make up
03:33for it because I'm so quick and athletic and my speed's elite.
03:36I have him categorized as good athlete, but not unbelievable.
03:39And then he ran a 4-3-5 at his bleeping pro day.
03:43And I'm going, let's reexamine that scouting report.
03:46Let's look again.
03:47Do we have something special here in this player?
03:50First team All-SEC, finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is the best DB in the country, was ninth
03:56in the nation with over 1.2 passes defended per game.
04:00And he led his team with 11 PBUs this year.
04:02Started 11 games, had 45 tackles, and a couple interceptions playing on the same team as his brother, who's a
04:08safety at LSU.
04:09He transferred in from Ohio State after a season.
04:12But, man, sort of lanes a baller.
04:13I mentioned Silver Spring, you know, the background being from this area.
04:16I think that's a little icing on top of the cake that's not why you're going to draft him necessarily,
04:21but I don't think it hurts either.
04:24You know there's going to be some intrigue for him in coming back to the DMV and playing for Washington
04:28if they were to take him.
04:30He is available to the commanders in a lot of mock drafts.
04:33Oh, yeah.
04:33Because it's hard to imagine him going in the top six.
04:36I don't think it's a lock that he won't.
04:38You could see a team, maybe the Giants or the Titans or the Cardinals, or surprise everyone, stun everyone, and
04:43take him somewhere in the top six or so.
04:45But he's likely going to be there.
04:48The biggest needs for Washington are what?
04:51On offense, wide receiver.
04:53And on defense, corner.
04:55And I actually think in the grand scheme of their roster, there's a very easy case to make that corner
05:01is their number one need.
05:02You could absolutely make that case.
05:05In a world where three are on the field at a time at minimum, because everybody's in 11 personnel constantly,
05:09and you're probably going to have four corners on the field a ton,
05:13one, you've got Mikey Sanristill, who's really only played super effectively outside, not inside.
05:19The idea being maybe he'll be outside opposite Trey Amos.
05:21We like both of those guys.
05:23But then you go out and you signed a new nickel cornerback who is not coming off a particularly good
05:29season in Amik Robertson.
05:30There's significant questions there.
05:31But right now you have three.
05:33You need five at least on your roster, six probably, to get through the season.
05:38So you still need to double the personnel that you have that you trust, and they don't really have a
05:43third high upside player.
05:44This would be a massive addition.
05:47Do I like other guys more?
05:48Yes.
05:49I would take either edge, Bailey or Reese over them.
05:51Do I like Jeremiah Love more?
05:53I do.
05:54But the last thing I'll say, Danny, is cornerback's expensive, man.
05:57Yep.
05:57This is on the same wavelength as like edge and wide receiver.
06:01This is the point.
06:02If we're doing the, don't draft Jeremiah Love, he's a running back.
06:05Well, then that should also be a, don't draft Sonny Stiles, he's a linebacker.
06:09Well, then it should also be a, don't draft Caleb Downs, he's a safety.
06:13If you're trying to spend a pick on a really expensive item so that you can save money and think
06:18about the second contract,
06:19then corner gets pushed way up your board.
06:22You touched on it.
06:22So you stole the first of my two points.
06:24You're correct.
06:24I'd co-sign that.
06:25I triple-stamp your rubber stamp, Lloyd.
06:26Here's the second part, though.
06:27The same convo we've had about receivers surrounding Carnell Tate is a similar one that people are having around corner.
06:33We have not talked about this angle very much, right?
06:35If you go to, again, kind of the, I like to look at a couple different sites, but mock draft
06:40database, which has a consensus of everybody's ranking.
06:43So if one person has a guy at 31st, one site has him 38th, it takes kind of an average
06:48of that, right?
06:48So there's a ton of guys in that 39 to 75, 78 range at the corner spot where you could
06:56absolutely see one of these dudes there in the third round the same way we've talked about receiver.
07:00If you don't want to do Tate at seven, which I get, that's fine.
07:03I like him more than most.
07:04I think that's allowed.
07:05But if you go, that's too rich for my blood at seven, forget about a tradeback scenario if it's not
07:09possible, we could find a pretty good receiver in round three.
07:12I think that's probably the case here with the cornerback spot.
07:16Again, it's something we haven't really discussed because it didn't really seem like that was on the radar.
07:20So maybe, just making this up, it's a, I don't know, it's a receiver in round one or a corner
07:26in round three, or it's a defensive end in round one, corner in round three.
07:29Some combination therein, because you might get some decent value there at that second corner spot.
07:34If they had not made a DC change, I think Mansour Delaney would be the almost odds-on favorite to
07:42be the pick for them at seven.
07:43And if they didn't make the scheme change to the Flores defense, led now by Durante Jones, then I think
07:50even in another scheme with another first-time coordinator coming in here.
07:54Just because it's a safety blanket.
07:55It's like, I don't have to scheme anything up.
07:57I've got that.
07:58Everybody would be saying they're going to take a corner because their corner talent's not good enough.
08:01You can't be a good defense if you don't have better corner play.
08:03But, the only thing working against it is this philosophy that Flores' defenses don't require strong or excellent corner play.
08:14You don't need to go that route.
08:16And so everyone just kind of assumes you're not going to spend a lot at corner.
08:19You're not going to draft a corner as high as seven.
08:22But what if they did?
08:24It's okay to have a great player instead of a replacement level one, even in a scheme where not a
08:29lot is asked of you, because guess what?
08:31Then you might be exceptional.
08:33You might be a top-five corner in the league.
08:34It's Richard Sherman.
08:35We had D'Angelo Hall on years ago, remember, ranking corners, and he talked about how basically Sherman is very
08:40talented, very good.
08:41He was a fifth-round pick, I think.
08:42But his point was he gets to basically be asked to do very, very little.
08:46It's a good way to live.
08:47But if you put a Mansoor Delaney who's a top-ten pick in that situation, great.
08:52You're making his life really easy, and he's splendid in his talent and his athleticism.
08:57Let's go.
08:58Let's go have a great football player.
09:00And it would be a pretty smooth, easy transition probably, too.
09:03But I want to open up the phones on this.
09:05We've spent so much time on bigger names, more exciting potential additions, whether that's on offense with Love or Tate
09:13or on defense with an edge rusher or Sonny Stiles.
09:16What if they take Mansoor Delaney?
09:18Could you be pumped with that?
09:20800-636-1067.
09:22And does anybody think that would make a lot of sense with their needs right now?
09:25800-636-1067.
