Regardless of position, the Commanders need a blue chipper.
Transcript
00:00Incredible, man.
00:01Love it.
00:01All right, let's get into the NFL draft.
00:03We are now one day away, people.
00:05Here we go.
00:05My math is right.
00:06One more sleep.
00:08Grant knows what day it is.
00:10Grant knows what day it is.
00:11Two picks for the commanders in the top 75 if they stick and pick.
00:15There aren't any trades.
00:16They have the seventh pick in round one.
00:18They have the 71st pick, which comes early in round three.
00:22Here's the exercise.
00:23You and I will kick it off, and then we can hit the phones on this next segment
00:27with people who are excited about the draft tomorrow.
00:30The way I want to do it, Danny, is what do they have to accomplish
00:33with those first two picks for you to feel content?
00:36I want to go success and failure.
00:38This is not who they're taking.
00:40This is not the players that you want them to take.
00:43So skip that part of the exercise.
00:45I'm saying through two picks in three rounds, if they stick and pick at 7 and 71
00:51in the top 75, they have to have done what for you to feel good.
00:55So I'll give you the example.
00:58At the end of the third round, if the commanders have not drafted a skill position player,
01:04a weapon on offense with either of their two picks at 7 and 71, it's a failure.
01:10I'll be disappointed.
01:12That is something I'm not going to be able to explain away.
01:17Don't really care how the board falls, by the way.
01:19I'm fine with you going with a defender in the top 10 at 7, if that's what they're going
01:24to do.
01:24Todd McShay today going very hard, saying he's heard on good authority.
01:28They're taking a defensive player at 7.
01:30If that's how it works out, and by the way, if Jeremiah Love's not there, it's how it should
01:34work out, because I don't know that there's anybody else worth pouncing on at number 7.
01:38Fine.
01:38Take your defensive stalwart.
01:39You better come back at 71 and get me a damn weapon.
01:44And at that point, it either needs to be a blazingly fast running back that you love, or
01:50more likely, a wide receiver, because you're going to be shopping in the wide receiver aisle
01:55at 71.
01:56There will be bounties.
01:58There will be strong collections of quality options and players, size and speed and productive
02:04guys who caught 90 balls in college.
02:06They're all going to be there for you.
02:07Take your pick.
02:08Pick your poison.
02:09But Danny, for me, success, failure, I'll start with failure.
02:13If they are done after the third round, and through 7 and 71, they do not have a weapon
02:19for Jaden Daniels, I'm tearing up that paper, throwing it away, and telling them to go back
02:24and try again.
02:25I need a weapon.
02:26I'm weapons Paulson, and I need a weapon.
02:28I'll be more specific.
02:29I will drill down.
02:31It's not just a weapon.
02:32It's a wide receiver.
02:34That's what's needed.
02:34It's the most critical area of the team.
02:36It is the gaping hole.
02:37I will not do the Noah Brown, I hope someone gets cut, tier of receiver again.
02:41No, thank you.
02:42Neither will they, by the way.
02:43Or at least they showed you they didn't want to do that.
02:44That's why, again, I'm going to keep hammering this.
02:46They went after Alec Pierce.
02:47They went after Romeo Dobbs.
02:48Had they not done that, I'd go, you guys don't see the issue.
02:51They see it too.
02:52But if they take Jeremiah Love at 7, they're not taking a wide receiver probably at that
02:57point at 71.
02:58You'd probably go corner or safety or something else.
03:01Maybe an edge.
03:02You would consider that a failure?
03:04Yes, I would consider that a mistake.
03:05A wide receiver.
03:06An outside target.
03:07Not a gimmick.
03:08Not someone that's going to motion in the slot or you're throwing little screens to or the
03:11occasional time you're going to match up on a linebacker for a wheel route.
03:14I'm talking 100 targets, wide receiver two, air apparent potential to wide receiver one.
03:19However you get there.
03:19You trade back into the second round.
03:21You find someone in the third round that can do it.
03:22A la Terry.
03:23Whatever you do.
03:24However you park that car, it needs to be right next to the curb between the two cars.
03:29One car in front of it.
03:29One car behind you.
03:30Parallel park that car.
03:32Get me to that parking spot and pay for parking.
03:34I need a wide receiver.
03:36That has to happen.
03:37So success obviously could just be the inverse, right?
03:39Where you're saying success is getting a wide receiver.
03:41I'm saying it's getting a weapon.
03:43I think that's too lazy.
03:44So we've got to give something else that you would consider a success.
03:47To that I would say, what am I fine with?
03:49Well, a trade back could be a success.
03:52Drafting a defensive baller.
03:53That's Sonny Stiles.
03:55That's one of the edges like David Bailey or Arvo Reese falling to you.
03:58Even Mansoor Delaney, I'm a little less excited about.
04:01I think he's been pushed a little too far up the board for me.
04:03But seems somewhat likely and still a massive position of need.
04:07I could get down with that.
04:08So I'm going to say a success at 7-71 is that they addressed two significant needs with those picks.
04:16And what I mean by that is they didn't do anything where you go, I really like that player, but
04:22I don't really get it.
04:24You know, that could be a defensive tackle or a tight end.
04:28And that's a weapon, so I guess I could maybe work in pencil there.
04:32But like one of these things where they do it and you go, you had to do that there?
04:38You had to go with, you know, the player at the position where you're fairly set?
04:42Now, the good news for them is there's only a couple of those, to be honest with you.
04:45But that means a lot of other things are on the table.
04:48So that could be a linebacker.
04:50That could be a cornerback.
04:51That could be a wide receiver or a running back.
04:54Go explore the space.
04:55But my success would be you address two positions of need at 7-71 and you come away with a
05:02blue chipper at the top of the board.
05:04So my modifier or the addendum or the second part, part two, if you will, to the you must come
05:08back with a wide receiver is the other guy you draft.
05:11If it's not at 7, okay, tradeback to me is dependent.
05:15I would love that.
05:16If you can do it, that's great.
05:17That's a success for you to add picks.
05:18But I understand it takes two to tango there, so I'm not counting on a tradeback.
05:21If it happens, I'll be thrilled.
05:22But if it's not at 7 where you draft the wideout, I need the three other teams in the division
05:29and the other fan bases to go, damn it.
05:32That reaction's what I covet.
05:33I want that.
05:34I want them to fear the way that I fear.
05:37When the Giants end up with Abdul Carter and I go, that's going to be a problem.
05:41When the Eagles end up with, you know, name that defender that fell to them somehow and it's amazing they
05:46always do it, damn it, that's going to be a problem.
05:48Same with Dallas, etc.
05:49I want that, it's probably, at 7 if it's not a wideout, a defensive weapon in all likelihood that's going
05:54to strike fear, whether it's a Bailey slips or downs.
05:57Even if it's overvalued, that's a playmaker, that's a badass, Sonny Stiles, etc.
06:01I need our rivals here to have the instant reaction of, damn it, not that we were going to take
06:08him, but I certainly don't want them to have him.
06:10And I want that.
06:11So that to me is a top player at whatever kind of position.
06:17So this isn't the year for it, but instead of saying, hey, they need a tackle, so you end up
06:20with the fourth tackle in the draft.
06:22That's not exciting.
06:22Nobody's scared of that.
06:24This is going to be at 7, again, if it's not a wideout.
06:27The best off-ball linebacker in Stiles, the best safety is downs.
06:31The best pass rusher might be Bailey.
06:33You end up with the best at one of these spots and opponents will go, crap, we've got to deal
06:37with that guy.
06:37Best corner, Delaney.
06:38Yeah, there you go.
06:39Best running back, love.
06:40How about that one?
06:44Yeah.
06:44Not as much.
06:45Yeah.
06:45Okay.
06:46Yeah.
06:47800-636-1067 is the number.
06:50800-636-1067.
06:52We'll hit the phones on this next.
06:54Through three rounds, two picks, seven and 71, what will you consider a success?
07:00What will you consider a failure?
07:01We want to hear from you next on The Fan.
