04:50When you're on a roll like that, you want to keep it digging.
04:53Yeah, and the flip side of that is track house racing.
04:55It hasn't been the start of the year that they won.
04:56And the one I would focus on is Conor Zillich.
04:58He won all those O'Reilly Series races last year,
05:01came into this year with high expectations
05:03and just hasn't been able to perform.
05:04They've run well, but they haven't finished well.
05:0733rd in points, but he did win last night.
05:09Maybe that kick starts exactly what they need.
05:10And the interesting part about the Zillich thing, too,
05:13is that confidence.
05:14Can it come with the win last night?
05:16It never hurt when you went on Saturday going into Sunday.
05:20And he also quit practice early.
05:22So we're either going to learn a really big lesson today
05:24about not quitting practice early, or they're going to run pretty good.
05:26And he mentioned that last night.
05:28You know, drivers never want to admit when their confidence gets down.
05:31But he said that after winning last night.
05:32He's like, look, you start to doubt yourself on what you can do.
05:34And I think it's a huge, huge momentum for him.
05:36Yeah, and back to the Toyotas.
05:38You know, they didn't practice real well, but they qualified okay.
05:40And certainly we'll be talking with Ty Gibbs.
05:43Pay that no attention.
05:45They'll be there when the time.
05:46When the money's on the line, that pay window opens,
05:48you better look it over your shoulder.
05:50You're going to have to go through them to get the job done here today.
05:52Let's see what our reporters are working on.
05:54We'll start with Jamie Little.
05:55Hey, Jamie.
05:56Hey, Chris.
05:57Well, Tyler Rettick has taken command at many different styles of racetracks.
06:00But it's no secret he wants to get better at the short tracks.
06:04But this team right here at Bristol, it has been a struggle.
06:08He's only finished on the lead lap a couple of times in the last eight races here.
06:12So the team certainly has gone to work.
06:14And we saw it in qualifying yesterday.
06:16They stepped up, went out there and qualified on the front row.
06:19The best effort by a lot.
06:22And I talked to his crew chief, Billy Scott, and he said,
06:24we made a couple of adjustments for today, but we feel like we are in the ballpark.
06:28This team is looking for their fifth victory of the season.
06:32Josh.
06:32Well, Jamie, Kyle Larson has put together some of the most dominant performances that we've seen at Bristol.
06:39He has those three wins, two in the last three races here.
06:42And in those most recent wins, he led over 400 laps in both of those races.
06:47But what about today?
06:48Well, I caught up with the team earlier today.
06:50They called their car from yesterday reasonable.
06:52It was good on the long run.
06:54They qualified eighth.
06:55So they said the most important thing, get that track position.
06:58But look for this five team today to break that 31 race winless streak.
07:02But it's going to be dependent on the car and the track, Regan.
07:06Josh, that's right.
07:07And while you guys are on pit road with the cars, I'm out here where the action is going to
07:10happen.
07:10Turn three and this traction compound that we see down here.
07:13This has been a big discussion, as it always is when we come to Bristol.
07:16What's it going to be like in the race?
07:18How sticky is it going to be?
07:19How long will it take to activate?
07:20Well, I can tell you they use the same process as they did in the fall on this racetrack,
07:24about three feet up from the bottom.
07:26And it is very sticky right now.
07:28You see my shoe trying to stick to it as I step in it.
07:31Drivers walking across the tracks as they went to the driver's meeting.
07:34They were all eyes wide open looking at this compound, how sticky it was.
07:37The question is going to be, how long will this compound stay and be the preferred line?
07:42And how long will it be until they have to move up this 28 degrees of banking to the top
07:46of the racetrack?
07:47More importantly, what will your car do when you do get off the bottom of the racetrack?
07:53Chris, there's plenty for these guys to think about.
07:54And as I keep talking about tacky, that seems like it's time for me to throw it back to you.
08:00Yeah.
08:00Why did when you said tacky, I saw all of them look at my direction.
08:04I haven't figured that out yet.
08:05All right.
08:06Enjoy your compound over there and your traction as well.
08:08But the idea is, right, create multiple grooves, a little better racing, right?
08:13So does it benefit even after practice?
08:15Are there any drivers that benefit or ahead of the game in this?
08:17Well, the key is, we don't really know how much traction is in that compound.
08:22We haven't had conditions this hot.
08:24Kevin alluded to that earlier.
08:25We know it's a lot hotter today.
08:27But we've reapplied it.
08:28Very tacky on the bottom.
08:30We know that they're going to be single file around there for the first part of this race.
08:33The question is, as Regan just alluded to, when does that change?
08:37And when it does, it'll move up.
08:39And you better be keeping up with the racetrack, Jamie, when it does that.
08:41It'll take a different setup.
08:42Yeah, absolutely.
08:43And I think for all of us, the best part of race weekends are when there's unknowns that go into
08:47it.
08:47And this race has produced a lot of unknowns.
08:49I heard Larson mention earlier this week.
08:51He's like, look, when we get practice over with, there's a lot of times we still don't know what to
08:55expect or the track reacts differently.
08:57What I like about what I've seen this weekend, though, is in the O'Reilly race yesterday, it started on
09:01the bottom.
09:01As Clint mentioned, once that wears off, this is a longer race today.
09:05They started moving up, and the top already has some rubber on it.
09:08It's going to come in quicker today.
09:09Yeah, and it's very clean right now.
09:11You see Hamlin down there.
09:12Yeah, drivers can check it out.
09:13That's a very sophisticated test he's doing right there.
09:15But, you know, I think that the interesting part about this, and for a guy like Larson and Tyler Reddick,
09:21when there are those unknowns that everybody else didn't get to practice on the top of the racetrack,
09:27they're going to be up to speed quicker.
09:28They're going to push the groove wider.
09:30They're going to do things that other guys aren't willing to do and not, quite honestly, not as good at
09:35as those guys are.
09:37So I think we will have some cars that run really good on the bottom.
09:40It's going to be tough treading early to make a track position.
09:43But when it spreads out, that's when you're going to see whose car is versatile.
09:47And a lot of times you go from the bottom to the top, and the guys that are really good
09:50on the bottom aren't really good on the top.
09:52So we'll see.
09:53Yeah, and you'll have to figure it out by the time your picks come around in about 40 minutes.
09:57I've got by an already road down.
09:58Yeah, we're ready.
09:59It does seem like race teams have a lot to juggle today.
10:03And so does Red Panda, famous, making her NASCAR debut.
10:07She's entertaining the crowd here from the infield stage.
10:10This is an amazing acrobat.
10:12I'm nervous for her, Chris.
10:14And instead of four wheels, she's on one.
10:17It's a unicycle, right?
10:19Yeah, she's on a unicycle.
10:19We'll get to that in just a moment.
10:21But juggling those plates.
10:22I think we're missing out on the opportunity of Michael Waltrip being down there.
10:26I feel like we could come up with some sort of act that Clint could be a part of.
10:31I don't know what we would call him or what his trick would be.
10:34But maybe.
10:35That is amazing.
10:36I've seen her before.
10:38I think she was at Charlotte one time.
10:41I saw her at the performance game one night.
10:42We're fixing it.
10:43I mean, more plates.
10:43And whoever has that today dealing with the traction compound, good luck.
10:47We're just getting going.
10:49Alex Bowman is ready to find his groove again.
10:53He fills in Jamie Little on his path back to the track.
10:56Clint Boyer is singing a happy tune as he continues his weekly mission of crowning a tailgate game.
11:02Chase Elliott is enjoying a top five season on the chart so far.
11:06He tells our own Kevin Harvick all about it.
11:08Plus, Michael Waltrip does that gridwalk thing.
11:12All that and more next on race day.
11:17We're live for Bristol eighth race of the year.
11:19We've sped through seven races, including the record set by Tyler Reddick when he won the first three of the
11:24season.
11:25His third win was in Austin, Texas.
11:27And the story beneath the headline was what happened to Alex Bowman.
11:30Today, the headline is Bowman is back racing.
11:33And Jamie Little has the story.
11:34It is a big day for Alex Bowman indeed, Chris, after missing four straight races.
11:39What sidelined him wasn't your typical injury.
11:42It was vertigo, something he had never experienced before.
11:46And it happened in the middle of a race in Austin.
11:59So, it's been four weeks since we've seen you in your back.
12:03How are you feeling in this moment as you sit here and get ready to climb aboard your car again?
12:08Certainly has been a journey over the last month.
12:10But, yeah, COTA sucked.
12:13Had a lot of people in my corner helping me a lot.
12:16Probably picked the hardest place to come back to.
12:18Just ready to get back to work.
12:19So, you mentioned COTA.
12:21I had you for that race and I was listening to your radio.
12:23And I remember you saying, I'm going to need some help here.
12:27Buddy, I don't know if I make it.
12:28Blake told you a few laps ago, it's your call.
12:31It is your call.
12:32And nobody really knew what that meant.
12:34Are you sick inside the car or what was happening?
12:36It was weird.
12:37Everything was fine.
12:38We were running pretty well.
12:40Kind of business as usual.
12:42And then, I guess at the end of stage two there, just started feeling, like, dizzy and nauseous.
12:47Basically, the symptoms of vertigo and just fought with that.
12:50I couldn't get it to go away.
12:51I was in a position where I was going to run into somebody or run into something.
12:55And decided that the smart thing to do was to get out.
13:00Anybody that's gone through that stuff, it's not a fun experience.
13:05Alex, is there a doubt?
13:06What assurances do you have?
13:08It's vertigo you don't have.
13:09Why come back this week?
13:10What are your goals or expectations?
13:11Alex Boland returns to the number 48.
13:18What did that comeback process look like?
13:20What have you done inside a car just to help you have confidence that this is going to be okay?
13:26I think the biggest thing for me to have confidence in myself was making laps in a cart and in
13:30a car at 10 tenths.
13:31I think both of those things really helped me.
13:33And then the neurologists and everybody were able to say that I'm good to go.
13:37This is the third time in your cup career that you've had to step aside for an injury.
13:42What is it like sitting from afar, watching somebody else in your car, and watching this whole world continue?
13:48Yeah, I feel like Humpty Dumpty at this point.
13:50I'm just kind of put back together.
13:52But, you know, thankful for Justin and Anthony for all the hard work that they put in.
13:56I'm just ready to start to turn things around.
13:58You mentioned your team.
14:00How much has it meant to you to have Blake Harris and that entire 48 just rally around you
14:04and not give up and let everybody know that you are their guy?
14:08Yeah, everybody was super supportive, and they have been through the multiple injuries
14:13between Ally and Hendrick Motorsports and Chevy and everybody that makes this deal go around.
14:17I appreciate that.
14:18It means a lot.
14:21Well, it's just good to have him back racing and especially a contract year,
14:25and he would not have done this, Jamie, if he wasn't sure, if the team wasn't sure,
14:28that he was confident, healthy, and ready to get back at it.
14:31Yeah, I mean, first and foremost, we're all thrilled that he's back.
14:33It's scary as a driver to be out like this.
14:35And what I think we all have to keep in mind is that we look at these guys as drivers,
14:39and we see them race on Sunday, but they're humans also.
14:41It's a very scary situation to go through.
14:43And something like Vertigo, there's not a pill.
14:45There's not a test that just fixes this.
14:48I think, you know, if you think about, like, a cut on your arm, you watch that heel,
14:52and you can see the progress.
14:53But when you're in a situation like this, it's not how it works.
14:56So I'm glad he's been able to get back.
14:57There's no doubt about it that this track is going to test his ability.
15:02And if he can survive here, he can survive anyway.
15:04Yeah, you said there's no test.
15:05This is the ultimate test right here at Bristol.
15:06That's right.
15:07But, I mean, it's got to be a relief for Alex Bowman to be back in a saddle,
15:11get out there and do what you love to do, and log laps at this racetrack.
15:15This is a tough one.
15:16This is an ultimate test.
15:17It's hot out here too, Kevin.
15:18Well, the hard part is, even if you've been in the car every week, it's hard.
15:23And you haven't experienced the G-forces of racing in general, but let alone here at Bristol.
15:28And now it's hot, and you're going to bounce around,
15:30and you're going to do a lot of things today that you hadn't done in several weeks.
15:33So it is a very unique place to come back to to see if everything is okay.
15:38But as he said, I'm a race car driver.
15:40If they tell me I'm good, I'm getting in.
15:42Yeah.
15:42And it'll be an interesting day, but glad to have him back.
15:44Usually a contract you'd talk about extending mid-summer,
15:47his health concerns will either carry that forward or not.
15:50That's something they'll determine.
15:51Fourth, his best finish at Bristol in his career.
15:55And he's actually one of the favorites.
15:57We hope he does well today.
15:58We'll check the favorites and long shots a little later.
16:00Also, we're going to hear from Chase Elliott when we continue live from Bristol Motor Speedway.
16:05Clint Boyer, kind of a Bristol twist on his tailgate, Kings.
16:08It's all fun and games.
16:10And Ty Gibbs having the best seventh race start of his career.
16:13We're going to talk with him about chasing that elusive first win.
16:18And a guy who has had no trouble winning this year, going for his fifth win already in just the
16:24eighth race of the season.
16:25Tyler Reddick, just one of the many drivers you'll see in action.
16:32Favorite race of the year, Bristol Motor Speedway.
16:35That's right.
16:36Looking for a tailgate king.
16:38Where do you go?
16:38You go to the medallion campground.
16:40Way up high.
16:41Awesome view.
16:42Overlooking the drag strip.
16:44Beautiful view of the racetrack.
16:46And I love you.
16:48Oh, man.
16:50Told you.
16:51Oh, man.
16:52Andy.
16:53Yes, sir.
16:54The mayor of the medallion.
16:56Mayor of the medallion.
16:56You brought Santa Claus.
16:58And all your rowdy friends.
16:59Is everybody having fun?
17:00Woo!
17:03So what do you play for up here, Peter?
17:06Come on, cowboy.
17:08Let's see what you got.
17:09Oh!
17:12Oh!
17:13Let's go get it.
17:14Oh!
17:17Get in there!
17:19I told you guys, it's always so much fun camping at these racetracks.
17:23Bristol's no exception.
17:25Oh!
17:26Oh!
17:28Santa Claus, give me a list here.
17:29I have a naughty list and a nice.
17:32You're on the fence.
17:32I'm on the fence?
17:33You're on the fence.
17:34Well, let me see if I can fix this.
17:36I'm going to crown you the tailgate king.
17:39Woo!
17:43Always a lot of fun being in these campgrounds each and every weekend on any different, you
17:47know, racetrack.
17:47This one in particular up there, the medallion lot.
17:49That's something.
17:50That's a place that my family and I go up and camp.
17:52So when I say those are my people, Chris, those are my people up there.
17:55They really, yeah, they turn out.
17:56That perch up there, there it is.
17:58High, wide, and handsome up there, and they're all down here ready to watch this boy right
18:02here.
18:02I'm just glad you got beaten cornhole by Santa Claus.
18:05I drained it, too.
18:06I knocked Santa Claus out, but my team, I had the mayor.
18:10He blamed it on his team.
18:11Oh, he always blamed it.
18:12He didn't even put one on the board.
18:14You're our guest, but he likes to talk a lot.
18:16What do we got here?
18:17Warmest Bristol and Santa shows up in 10 years.
18:19So anyway, Ty Gibbs, it's great to see you starting third today.
18:22And in the top 10 in points, what a great season and what a turnaround, dramatic, in the
18:27simple term.
18:28What do you point to first as for the reason for that?
18:30I didn't know Santa Claus drank beer.
18:32When did that start?
18:33Only when he visits Clint.
18:34You realize a lot of things.
18:37That's funny.
18:38Yeah, it's been a great year for us.
18:39You know, super cool to be here.
18:40I appreciate you guys letting me come on.
18:42You know, it's been a great year for us and the 54 group.
18:44We've, you know, went through a lot in the last couple of years.
18:46And so, you know, to finally start running good and being consistent, it's been a lot
18:49of fun.
18:50Are you more relaxed or what's made you more consistent?
18:51I know, having great people around me and, you know, and just locking in on building on
18:55our stuff from last year and just, you know, expanding our notebook and, you know, getting
18:59more experience, obviously, in my hand, you know, being so young is really important
19:02as well.
19:03So it's been a ton of fun this year.
19:05Well, we appreciate you bringing some style to the set with those sunglasses.
19:09Those Oakley's.
19:09Maybe Clint can get some.
19:11Yeah, my beautiful Oakley's.
19:12Get a little bit of style before the end of the show.
19:14But no matter how your year has gone or what car that you've been driving, you come to
19:20Bristol and it's always been a good track for you.
19:22Why is that?
19:23I don't know.
19:24I just really love Bristol.
19:25I think you just drive the crap out of it.
19:27Sometimes it's bit me pretty bad and it has and it's shown that.
19:29But for the most part, you just hammer down and I think that's fun racing.
19:32And I think, you know, trying to laugh as many people as you possibly can is a ton of fun
19:36as well.
19:37So I've been very fortunate to come here with a great organization as well that has had a lot
19:41of success.
19:41And, you know, I feel like ourselves are always pretty good here as well.
19:44So I've had a lot of fun and hopefully it's another day like that.
19:47Well, watching this race last year.
19:50Oh, so close.
19:51I mean, it almost happened last year.
19:53I think this is one of the tracks that it's got to be right on your on your radar.
19:58But talk to me about the progression with your team, with your organization, your teammates.
20:02I mean, this is as good as we've ever seen Ty Gibbs running.
20:05And where is this win going to come from?
20:07And I want you to tell me right here.
20:09Yeah, I don't know.
20:10I mean, I feel like this could be one of them today.
20:11I feel like the last couple of weeks also in Martinsville, you know, if we got a better
20:15strategy and the caution came out, you know, 20 laps later, I think we could have a shot
20:18there as well.
20:19And, you know, our pit crew has been such a big performance answer for our team.
20:23And it's been so much fun.
20:24But, yeah, really looking forward to today.
20:26This place is awesome.
20:27One of the best race tracks in the world.
20:29And I think it puts on one of the great races.
20:31What do you expect today?
20:32I feel like the last couple of times we've been to Bristol, there's a lot of unknowns.
20:35So we had tire issues that they obviously the traction compound looks different this weekend
20:39to me than what it has in the past.
20:41They say it's the same.
20:41What are you guys in your team meeting?
20:43What are you thinking about today?
20:44Yeah, it's been pretty nuclear the last couple of races here.
20:46So, you know, looking forward to a great day.
20:48I think that, you know, with the temperatures being up just a little bit, I think that we're
20:51going to have a lot of rubber laid down.
20:53I think we're going to be moving around all grooves.
20:54I think in the past, this has been really cold.
20:56The entire doesn't take rubber and concrete is such a weird service for rubber to go on.
21:00So I think today we're going to move around a lot.
21:02Hopefully put on a great show for all the fans and the 54 wins it.
21:05Did you say nuclear?
21:06Did you hear that?
21:07It was.
21:08I thought we were back in Martinsville talking about those hot dogs.
21:10That's right.
21:11Yeah.
21:12All right.
21:12No shot.
21:13You've been one of the more consistent drivers throughout this season.
21:15So good luck.
21:16Keep up the good work.
21:17I appreciate it.
21:17Good luck today.
21:17Thank you.
21:18I think it's going to happen, folks.
21:20All right.
21:20Let's check in with Regan.
21:22Well, Chris, we're down here on driver's intro stage.
21:26Chase Briscoe starting third today.
21:28You've got a lot of top tens three in a row here.
21:29Can you do it again?
21:30I hope so.
21:31I definitely thought our Lance Crackers Toyota was pretty good yesterday.
21:35You know, track position, starting position is going to be big.
21:37So, yeah, hopefully we can keep the streak alive, but hopefully win one finally.
21:40I feel like I've been in the mix that a lot just haven't been able to seal the deal.
21:43So, yeah, see if today's the day.
21:45They will definitely see you coming in that driver's suit.
21:47That is bright.
21:48Josh?
21:49Speaking of bright suits, here with Brad Kozlowski, also a three-time winner here at Bristol.
21:53So, Brad, how are you feeling about your chances here today?
21:56Runner-up in the fall.
21:57Can you get one spot better?
21:58Yeah, I mean, that's certainly the goal, Josh.
22:00You know, I think this track here is so dynamic.
22:03You know, it has two corners visually, but when you get on the track, it has about ten.
22:08You know, you've got the PJ1 line.
22:09When it's fresh, you've got the line above that.
22:12And then you've got the top line in the PJ1 when it's wore out.
22:15And then you've got the marble line.
22:16There's so many grooves on this racetrack.
22:19And to try to be in them at the right time is a big challenge.
22:22So, this race, you know, it's a lot warmer than it was last fall.
22:25It looks like the tires aren't going to wear out.
22:27And we're going to have to just really be on our toes and adapt to the situation.
22:30Good luck, Brad.
22:31Appreciate the time.
22:32Jamie?
22:33And Tyler Reddick, best qualifying effort ever by a lot here, starting on the front row.
22:38So, there's a lot of unknowns, I know.
22:40But what do you have to do to stay up front?
22:43Yeah, I mean, I think what was good for us is it seemed like the long run handling on our
22:47comparing Toyota Camry was really solid.
22:50A lot of guys had to come to pit road and make adjustments, and we were able to run straight
22:54through.
22:54So, I think that speaks to the good handling that we have.
22:56We certainly had some struggles again going in practice, but we were able to kind of nail
23:00it somewhat for qualifying.
23:02So, it seems like we're close.
23:04Yeah, I've just been looking forward to the day that we have a good start to the weekend,
23:08and we can make a good shot at having a clean weekend here, seeing what our cards are really
23:12capable of.
23:12All right, that's Tyler Reddick looking for his fifth win of the season, Chris.
23:15All right, thanks, Jamie.
23:16Coming up, the guy who got his earliest win of his career in the seventh race, Chase Elliott,
23:22sits down with Kevin.
23:23Can he win back-to-back?
23:24It's only happened one other time.
23:26That's when he won the championship after March.
23:28Nobody took Phoenix, and Joey Logano, third at Martinsville.
23:32Yeah, usually that's not a big deal for the three-time champ, but this season, his first
23:36top-ten finish since February.
23:38He's hoping for his third Bristol win today and to get on track.
23:45My papa said, son, you're going to drive me to drinking if you don't stop driving that
23:48hot rod Lincoln.
23:59Have you heard the story of the hot rod race when the Ford and the Lincoln were setting
24:03the pace?
24:03That story's true, I'm here to say, because I was driving that Model A.
24:09It's got a Lincoln motor in it.
24:10It's really souped up in that Model A body.
24:12It makes it look like a pump.
24:13It's got eight cylinders.
24:14You use them all.
24:15Got overdrive.
24:16Just won't stall.
24:19With four bow cards and a dual exhaust and four limb gears, you can really get lost.
24:23Got safety, too, but I ain't scared to break some good tires.
24:31Defending check, Kyle Larson hopes to get hot.
24:33Had won a race since last year at Kansas.
24:35He did win this race last season.
24:37Matter of fact, he dominated, leading 411 of the 500 laps.
24:42Hoping for a good day, especially since his Hendrick teammate, Chase Elliott, is coming off such a strong race.
24:48And, Kevin, it's always good when you get time to talk with NASCAR's most popular driver.
24:52It absolutely is.
24:53And Chase gave us a lot of good insight into everything that's been happening in his world,
24:58his relationship with Alan Gustafson.
24:59Lots of good insight, and we got to sit down with Chase and have a little chat.
25:06Chase Elliott has won the cookout 400 in Martinsville.
25:10The fans are cheering NASCAR's most popular driver and his crew.
25:14Awesome job.
25:15Appreciate you all.
25:18Winning early in the year, what did it feel like to get that win knocked out so early in the
25:24season?
25:24That was kind of the first time that we've ever crossed that bridge that early in the season.
25:29And I feel like in a lot of years past, we've gotten ourselves in positions where it's like,
25:33man, we have to go be almost perfect.
25:35Thrill of victory and the relief.
25:37The runway is much longer now, right?
25:39Because being solid and being okay is not going to get you where you need to go.
25:44Well, it started with Chase Elliott short pitting at lap 261 from ninth place.
25:50You know, Alan makes a great pit call.
25:51You get your car better throughout the day, and you get the track position, and you set sail.
25:56And there's just not, in my opinion, there's not but a handful of you guys that can do that.
26:00So we got about halfway, and he made a few changes, and I thought, man, this thing really is not
26:04bad.
26:05Like, I don't feel like I'm a ninth place car.
26:08A ninth place car.
26:09A gutsy move by his crew chief.
26:11Made a gamble.
26:12Paid off.
26:13Well, it worked out.
26:14And that's sometimes you've got to make those gutsy calls.
26:16It's always interesting to see the pairs of drivers and crew chiefs that work.
26:21What's made that work so long?
26:23The amount of respect that I received from him very early on when I really didn't deserve it was very
26:32high.
26:32It just makes me want to give him everything I've got in return.
26:35So it was never, this is how I've done it for the past 15 years, this is how we're going
26:41to do it now.
26:41You know, I just feel like I was always given the opportunity to kind of make this team and this
26:47effort our own.
26:53What are your feelings about having a week off first and then being able to have that win and come
26:59back here?
27:00I feel good.
27:02Not only have we not won a race early in the year, had never won a race going into an
27:05off week before.
27:06So that was kind of cool, you know, I get to enjoy it for an extra few days.
27:10But we need to build on that, you know, and get ourselves into that next level of putting ourselves into
27:15position to win more often.
27:17And we are plenty good enough to do that.
27:21Now we had a very intense moment here.
27:24We did.
27:25Back several years ago.
27:27That does that every week tries to run into it.
27:30Chase Elliott is being a roadblock for Kevin Harvick.
27:33That's what Bristol does to you.
27:35I remember, you know, we were standing there talking and the look on everyone's face when you and I decided
27:41to go inside and talk was thinking that was not a good idea.
27:45But I'm like, look, I thought it was a great thing to be able to go and have a conversation.
27:49That's also what those big moments do.
27:51There are lessons learned.
27:52That's right.
27:53Congratulations on winning at Martinsville.
27:55Thank you.
27:56Good luck here at Bristol.
28:00Well, it's always interesting and fun to sit down with the driver after they've won the week before because they're
28:05always in a really good mood.
28:06But Chase was very open.
28:07And, you know, I think the thing that struck me the most about the converse that I took from the
28:12conversation is the fact that the relationship that he has with Allen is just solid.
28:17And you can tell, like, there's no BS behind it.
28:19It's just a great relationship, whether they're winning, losing, whatever it is.
28:24And I think you have to be able to have that.
28:26And the thing, one thing that I took from that that's not in that interview, Allen is the guy on
28:31the radio when the SMT data comes up and he tells him that he needs to drive different.
28:35Allen delivers that information.
28:36I said, how do you take that?
28:37He's like, oh, that's that's the guy I want delivering it.
28:40So a lot of trust there.
28:41I mean, his championship came in 2020.
28:43He's fourth in points.
28:45Would you put him in your Super Six for the Chase championship if you were talking about guys with a
28:50realistic shot?
28:51I think you'd be a fool if you didn't.
28:52I mean, the team, they're firing on all.
28:56They take opportunities like we had in Martinsville and capitalize on it.
29:00And there's only a few teams that can do that collectively, right?
29:04With the driver and crew chief engineers, they saw that opportunity.
29:09There was other guys that had that.
29:10They saw it.
29:11And it was a calculated, you know, guess.
29:13But it worked.
29:14And that experience and wisdom amongst Allen and his driver, Chase, is what puts them in situations to be able
29:22to capitalize.
29:22A lot of loyalty from both sides, whether it's on Chase's side or Allen's side.
29:26Or in the Oregon from the owner.
29:27They never blame the other.
29:28So I really like that.
29:29I think something else to keep in mind as you look at the nine car, and we've discussed this a
29:33lot, Chevrolet has this new body.
29:34They're only going to continue to get it better.
29:36When you look at the fact that they won Martinsville with not having the fastest car, think back to Vegas.
29:41They ran second.
29:41Could have won there as well.
29:43That team is going to continue to get better every year.
29:45I like what he said also about we've never been able to win this early in the season.
29:49Confidence is everything in this sport.
29:50They got better this last weekend.
29:52To your point, if you really think about it, the nuts and bolts of what's going on in this sport
29:57of NASCAR,
29:58they're the only ones that should have room to improve.
30:01Everybody else is working under the same constraints of the same rule package, whether it be a Ford or even
30:07a Toyota.
30:07We know that Toyotas are good, but these Chevrolets have rhyme and reason to even get better yet.
30:12And they feel very good about it, which is why you're going to see on the favorites and long shots,
30:16where the favorites, you can see, Kyle Larson is right there,
30:20even though he hasn't won.
30:21You also see Chase Elliott, Ty Gibbs, who spoke with us a moment ago.
30:24Alex Bowman making his first start after missing four races on the favorites board as well.
30:29On the long shots, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won the truck race, or was, I'm sorry,
30:34went in the truck race, but was fastest in the first practice session.
30:38And you got Daniel Suarez also.
30:39He'll start 13th.
30:40He was in the truck race as well.
30:42So let's get your picks.
30:44And Clint has moved ahead, going back to back.
30:46All of his studying and hard work, the genius.
30:49I mean, you're getting way carried away.
30:50Hey, facts and facts, you heard them, you heard them.
30:53So you get to choose first.
30:54Who do you like today?
30:55Well, there ain't no way a two-time champion goes a year without winning a race.
31:00The number five is back.
31:01Kyle Larson is your winner today at Bristol.
31:04You know what I love about this?
31:05Had to be a three-time champion for me.
31:07We had Ty Gibbs on, and Clint glazed him for five minutes and told him how great he was.
31:11Well, he's gone.
31:13Well, I'm going to take Ty Gibbs.
31:15I think he gets his first Cup Series win today.
31:18He's been good at this track.
31:19Led over 200 laps here the last time.
31:20I think he gets it done.
31:21Well, I think you guys are going to follow my pick all day.
31:24The pole sitter, Ryan Blaney.
31:26So take a good look at the back of that car, because you're going to finish behind it today.
31:29You're on.
31:30I think we got him.
31:31Going with Ryan Blaney, who is 0 for 18 here, brother.
31:33That's great.
31:34All straight.
31:34Yes, all straights have to end.
31:36Facts every straight, Kevin.
31:38No, I just, you're going to head up to the booth and join the broadcast.
31:41Jamie and I will continue from here as we count you down to the start of the race.
31:45Thanks for hanging with us on FS1.
31:47We're going to hear from drivers.
31:49Sum up short track racing.
31:53And we'll have the grid walk as well.
31:57Are we done?
31:58No.
32:07Bristol Motor Speedway, they've hosted football games last year, a Major League Baseball game.
32:11You hear 650 feet.
32:13You might think of a monster home run, but that's the length of the front stretch and the back stretch.
32:17And today, throw in 80 degree temperatures and let's hear what drivers have to say about this place.
32:25It's Bristol, baby.
32:27Racing's last great coliseum.
32:30About to go rocking and rolling.
32:32Bristol has just been, you know, just crazy.
32:35I don't think anybody knows what to expect about Bristol.
32:37What I can tell you is, it's a really fast track.
32:40Yeah, the last time we were at Bristol, it was the heavy tire wearer.
32:43James are coming in for their second set of sticker tires.
32:45Everyone thinks they haven't figured out of why the tires act the way they do, why the track takes rubber,
32:50why it doesn't take rubber.
32:51And then all of a sudden, it'll throw us for a curveball and nobody really knows.
32:55Oh, we got trouble.
32:56Oh, no.
32:57Oh, heavy damage.
32:58What the f*** is that?
32:59That's why they call this Bristol, baby.
33:02Take me out.
33:03For us race car drivers, when we show up to Bristol and we go out for the first 10 to
33:0715 laps, you're almost having to catch your breath.
33:10I like running the top.
33:11I like running up close to the wall.
33:13It's been, you know, my favorite racetrack to race at since I got into stock car racing.
33:17You got to be ready for anything at Bristol.
33:19Let's go racing, boys!
33:20All hell's going to break loose right here.
33:22You watch.
33:23This race never disappoints.
33:25Take me out.
33:30I don't know.
33:31You've raced here.
33:32What do you think?
33:33They covered a lot, so they're still trying to figure things out.
33:36But I like it because it is unpredictable, and last year's races were an example of that.
33:40Yeah, I mean, fast is the word that I would tell you to describe this place.
33:43It's incredible.
33:44Guys will talk about short tracks and how quick they are throughout the U.S.
33:47This is the fastest.
33:48And what makes it so special, Chris, is you can run around the bottom.
33:51Obviously, we have the traction compound down there right now or all the way up against the wall.
33:54But to me, the most special part of this track is the fans.
33:58When something happens on the racetrack here and you hear the reaction from all of these people, it's a pretty
34:03special moment in sports.
34:04Yeah, and it's really loud, Thunder Valley, and I love the Coliseum impact.
34:07Let's look at points, though, as we are into the eighth race today.
34:10And who in the chase system, which we go back to that, different from last year, look at the guys
34:15who have made up ground.
34:17Josevar, Shane Van Gis, comparing, we're comparing this, Ty Gibbs and Brad Keselowski to where they would have been last
34:23year.
34:24And everybody's trying to get in the top 16 to get into the chase.
34:27But really, that top six or eight, that's what's going to determine who has a more serious shot at the
34:32actual championship.
34:33It is, and we had Ty Gibbs on the show just a few moments ago, and we talked about what
34:37an incredible season he's having.
34:38You look on the right-hand side of your screen, lots of top fives right there.
34:42And if you continue to finish in the top five, you will win a race.
34:45I think today, obviously, he was my pick.
34:47Today is the day that he can get it done.
34:48This has been a great track for him.
34:50It's been consistent here.
34:51He has a little bit of momentum.
34:53I think Ty Gibbs, special season he's having.
34:56Yeah, and he really sounded confident.
34:57Now, he might have been on this list last year.
34:59These are guys, this is only temporary, but they have, compared to last year, haven't taken advantage of, including the
35:05defending champion, the new system.
35:07Although, you know, he'll be around at the end and maybe today.
35:10Kyle Busch, of course, Chase Briscoe, Ross Chastain, where they were last year, where they are now.
35:16Anybody outside of the 16 or on the fringe that you say, okay, they'll get it right, and I expect
35:21them to be in the chase.
35:22Yeah, Chase Briscoe is the guy, no pun intended, is the guy that I have my eye on because they
35:27have run well.
35:28If you look over there, the results have not shown how quick this car has been.
35:32And he's been the fastest car at multiple tracks this year, and things have not went his way.
35:37Racing is evil at times.
35:39Sometimes you don't do anything wrong, and it just doesn't go your way.
35:41But this team, the 19 team, extremely fast.
35:44They're with the Toyotas.
35:45We talked about how much success they've had this year.
35:47I think they can get it turned around and get on a run.
35:49Yep.
35:50We have Ryan Blaney on the pole and Tyler Reddick alongside.
35:53Let's check in now with Michael Waltrip and the gridwalk.
35:57Chris, we are basked in sun.
35:59I don't think I've ever been to Bristol this time of year and the sun's shining.
36:01I'm with Josh Dobbs, UT alumni.
36:04You accomplished something here at Bristol, really big one day.
36:07We did.
36:08We had the Battle of Bristol.
36:09We got a dub.
36:09So hopefully give a little luck to my man Denny right here.
36:12Yeah, Denny, you're a Virginia Tech fan.
36:14How'd that go for you?
36:15Not well.
36:15I'm a big Beamer fan, and I believe they took it to us that day.
36:20What a great game.
36:21What a great racetrack.
36:22I know you're really good here.
36:23You've got wins here.
36:24How do you feel about today, bud?
36:25But we were just talking about it.
36:27I don't think I've ever been here where it's been this sunny, this hot in the middle of the day.
36:31So it's going to be definitely some different conditions.
36:34I do think we're going to be pinned to the bottom for the first 70 laps or so,
36:39and then you're going to see one or two cars make it to the top, and who knows after that.
36:42He's a real student of the game, y'all.
36:44Did you hear that, Josh?
36:45Do you feel like you know more about what's going on now?
36:47Come this way.
36:48We'll go talk to Bubba.
36:50Hey, Bubba, I was watching a special earlier today, and they said that you were the most aggressive trash talker.
36:58Does that sound familiar?
37:00I like to poke fun every once in a while.
37:02Yeah.
37:02I love that.
37:03Guess who this is?
37:04He's a pretty good trash talker as well.
37:06He got the big W here at the expense of Michigan.
37:10I was here.
37:10I was sitting right up here.
37:11Is that right?
37:11Yes, sir.
37:12How cool is that?
37:1327-yard touchdown run late, right?
37:15Yeah, very late.
37:15Bubba caught a practice pass from me.
37:17No, I did not catch it.
37:18He prepared me for the game.
37:20It's good that he's been practicing, so we're going to get a chance to do it again at some point.
37:24Bubba, he's going to throw the green flag.
37:25You got any advice about this?
37:26I hope he doesn't throw it.
37:27Yeah, you know, I hope he waves it.
37:28I tried throwing it.
37:30Yeah, we remember that.
37:32So don't do what he did.
37:33Don't do what he did.
37:34It fell out.
37:35Okay, I heard if you drop it, it'll be good for TV.
37:38No.
37:38Well, okay, yeah.
37:39I thought so, too.
37:40All right, have fun today.
37:42WWE, look who we got here.
37:44The big fella.
37:462021 WWE Hall of Fame inductee.
37:50And the mayor.
37:51How are you doing?
37:51Check out the paint job in this car, man.
37:53WrestleMania is coming up next weekend.
37:55And we brought a little taste of it right here to Bristol.
37:57I see what you're doing.
37:59You talk trash, and you got Kane here to back you up.
38:03Exactly.
38:03All right.
38:04You go through him.
38:05Yeah.
38:05I had to go through him to get this interview.
38:07Thank you, sir.
38:08I don't know if he needs any backup, though.
38:09It's pretty tough, dude.
38:10You know, he's a mayor of a county.
38:12Oh, it's impressive.
38:13I didn't count it.
38:14How do you get it?
38:14Not still, Tennessee.
38:15Let's go.
38:15Go Vols.
38:16I thought it was a, I thought you had to be a mayor of a city.
38:19Hey.
38:21Politics, man.
38:22City, county, whatever.
38:24I digress.
38:26Should have stuck with the Hall of Fame.
38:28That's my fault.
38:29Well, I got to wrap.
38:29I was going to look for Daniel Swatis.
38:31Got to wrap.
38:31You're going to have a great day today.
38:33I love it.
38:33Chris Myers, we're coming to you, buddy.
38:35Okay.
38:36We'll check the ballot box.
38:37Thanks.
38:37Hey, it's great weather.
38:40We also have a great race.
38:41And we have Michael Jordan is here.
38:43His 2311 team.
38:45They've won more than half the races so far this season.
38:48We're getting closer to the start of the eighth race of the season.
38:51We're live here on FS1.
38:56Thanks for staying with us here live on FS1 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
39:01Our aerial coverage brought to you by Goodyear.
39:04Tried, tested, proven, legendary.
39:14In the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
39:22A town where ideas become monuments.
39:26This is an absolute beast of a racetrack.
39:28And rhythm meets roar.
39:33A hollow carved by legends.
39:36The last great coliseum.
39:40A symphony of high speed.
39:43Steep banks.
39:44Close quarter battle.
39:46What the f*** was that?
39:47Gloves are off, boys.
39:49Everyone on the edge of their seats.
39:51The stage that will devour the weak.
39:53Oh, contact.
39:54Around they go.
39:55Bring glory to the bold.
39:57Kyle Larson dominates Bristol.
40:00Baby, tell you what you're back, baby.
40:02Today, the dream meets the concrete.
40:05This is Bristol, baby.
40:10A city of 28,000 grows in size as fans gather here for racing.
40:16Ryan Blaney in position on the front row for his second win of the season.
40:20He starts from the pole.
40:21Across from him will be Tyler Reddick, who is trying for his fifth win of the season.
40:27He has yet to win on a short track in his career.
40:30Or is today maybe the day where Kyle Larson finds his groove, the defending champ, two-time champ, hoping for
40:36his first win of the year.
40:38Thank you for being with us.
40:39And we pause now for opening ceremonies.
40:42Ladies and gentlemen, please rise as you are able.

41:42Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light

42:02Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
42:12O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming
42:22And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air
42:32Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
42:42Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
42:54O'er the land of the free

44:04Fox Sports welcomes you to the NASCAR Cup Series at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee.
44:12Beautiful sun-drenched day for racing, but NASCAR's best gets set to go at it.
44:19Who will be victorious here after 500 laps?
44:24Well, Danny Hamlin's won two of the last five here.
44:27You can't count him out.
44:28Ty Gibbs starting up front.
44:31A lot of top ten finishes recently.
44:33Ryan Blaney took a really loose race car on lap one.
44:36Lap two put it on the pole.
44:37Christopher Bell won the truck race Friday night.
44:39He's been very strong here.
44:41And Kyle Larson has won two of the last three races here, but hasn't won much since.
44:47Hi, everybody.
44:48Welcome to the broadcast booth.
44:49I'm Mike Joy with two fellows who know this place well.
44:51Clint Boyer has a Saturday win here.
44:53Two runner-up finishes in Cup, where Kevin Harvick's been to victory lane here three times in the Cup Series.
44:58So today, a lot is different.
45:01New tire for Bristol.
45:03More horsepower than we had last year.
45:05We know the groove is going to start out on the bottom.
45:08When's it going to move, and how are you going to get there?
45:10Well, that's a good question, but I think you're going to run the first hundred laps or so pretty close
45:14to the bottom.
45:15I think you'll see some guys that are struggling probably move their way up to the top.
45:18But you're going to have to have the track position.
45:21And I think this race is going to be a lot like Martinsville.
45:23I think you're going to have guys that run good in the first part of the race.
45:26And then as we get to that second part of the race, you're going to have some strategy come into
45:30play.
45:30You're going to have guys that get their cars better.
45:32And they're going to move up.
45:33Well, I like this traction compound conversation.
45:36Why do we do that, folks?
45:37We do that to make that bottom line be dominant, but it wears out.
45:40That means it's ever-changing all throughout these 500 laps around this awesome racetrack.
45:45You said it.
45:45Kevin and I, we love this place.
45:47Every driver in the field loves Bristol.
45:49Very challenging racetrack.
45:50Things happen fast, and you have to be able to adapt and adjust not only your driving style, but your
45:55race car to keep up with it.
45:57In our last race at Martinsville, Chase Elliott and Alan Gustafson took what was arguably a ninth-place car
46:02and on a strategy call turned it into a winner.
46:05Same thing happened in the Saturday race here just yesterday with Conor Zilich.
46:10Can that happen today?
46:11Absolutely.
46:12That can 100% happen today.
46:14And I think what we saw with Chase Elliott at Martinsville, and he said it in an interview I did
46:19with him this week,
46:20we didn't have a ninth-place car.
46:21We felt like we had made adjustments and made that car better and got the track position.
46:26But you're going to have to have the right strategy.
46:28And Alan made that call last week at Martinsville and put them in victory lane.
46:33But strategy will definitely put you in position to win this race.
46:36With the traction compound, I want you to stay focused here.
46:38William Byron, all the way in the back, going to the back of this racetrack.
46:41You have to be careful.
46:42Get up through the field because the tail end comes up fast for these leaders.
46:46You can go a lap down very quickly at Bristol.
46:48Yeah, William Byron's team changed a steering rack.
46:51That's an unapproved adjustment in NASCAR parlance.
46:53So he forfeits his qualifying spot and has to start in the rear.
46:57I would guess his biggest chore is to not get lapped in the early going.
47:00Put some cars in between you and that last one.
47:02Because the groove is going to be on the bottom.
47:04With that traction compound on the bottom of the racetrack,
47:07that's going to be where they're ripping around the bottom of this thing for a while.
47:10So it's going to be tough to pass unless you move them out of the way, Mike.
47:14It'll be the world's fastest conveyor belt for, what, the first 150, maybe 200 laps?
47:18Well, you definitely have to be down in it.
47:20Again, it is going to wear out.
47:22But at the first of this race, the bottom lane is going to be the preferred lane.
47:26That's being said, if you start on the outside, you better get in line pretty quick.
47:29If there's a hole, fill it.
47:30Do not wait.
47:32Ford on the pole.
47:33Toyota's the next four spots.
47:34Then Chevrolets.
47:35I don't see one make having an edge.
47:37Do you?
47:38I still lean towards the Toyotas.
47:40It is 2026.
47:42I think so.
47:43All right.
47:44Well, it's time to get this party started in Thunder Valley.
47:47Folks have been piling in here all day long to see their stars,
47:51and we're ready to get at it.
47:53Let's go trackside.
47:56Bristol Motor Speedway, here to give the command of fire engines.
48:01Please welcome mayor of Knox County and former WWE superstar Kane,
48:07Glenn Jacobs, and his grandson, Cooper.
48:11Drivers, start your engines.
48:26And the thunder roars in Bristol, Tennessee.
48:30500 laps coming at you next.
48:36Welcome back to the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
48:40Let's dial up our pole sitter.
48:43How about you, Ryan Blaney?
48:44It's boring the boys up in the booth.
48:45You got us?
48:47Yes, sir.
48:47I got you.
48:48Man, you're looking good up front there.
48:50Got a hot racetrack, traction compound reapplied today.
48:53How do you keep up with this racetrack,
48:55and when do you think that'll wear out?
48:58Yeah.
48:58Yeah, I mean, I think that's the big question is how do you keep up with it
49:01and where is it going to go and, you know, how quickly does it go up there
49:05and then does it change through the run?
49:07That's the beauty of this place is the bottom will wear out,
49:10the top will come in, the top will wear out,
49:12and then it's kind of, you know, dealer's choice on what lane you want to run.
49:16So I think we've got a pretty good hot run.
49:18Appreciate the 12 fellas that got tired for giving us a fast car.
49:21A good start spot.
49:23Hopefully we keep it.
49:24It should be a fun day for everyone to watch.
49:26All right, buddy.
49:26Good luck out there.
49:27Kevin picked you to win, so don't let him down.
49:30Ted Ford, thank you.
49:32Ryan Blaney's Penske Ford has his second Bristol pole,
49:35and he shares the front row with Tyler Reddick's 2311 Toyota.
49:39Reddick has his best Bristol start.
49:42Here's Jamie Little.
49:43Yeah, and Tyler Reddick has been the poster boy this year.
49:46Mike winning four of the first seven races,
49:48but when it comes to short tracks,
49:49he will be the first to tell you he needs to get better.
49:52Here at Bristol, hasn't finished on the lead lap in the last six races.
49:56He only has one top ten finish, but that can all change today.
50:00You mentioned how well they qualify.
50:01That's the best by a lot.
50:03I talked to his crew chief, Bill and Scott,
50:05and he said there is a new confidence with his driver.
50:08He thinks that's all they need to get it done today
50:11and win their fifth race of the season.
50:14Row number two, Chase Briscoe,
50:16and with his best cup start of his career, Riley Herbst.
50:20Row number three, keep an eye on him, folks.
50:23Ty Gibbs looking for his first cup win,
50:25and it just might happen today.
50:26Best start on his outside for Ross Chastain.
50:29Row number four, Chris Buescher,
50:31who won here in the fall of 22,
50:33and Kyle Larson, who has three wins here.
50:36Here's Josh Sims.
50:37Well, you've got to consider Kyle Larson,
50:40one of the favorites in this race,
50:41given how dominant he was in those victories.
50:44Has three wins at Bristol, two in the last three,
50:47and in those most recent wins,
50:49led over 400 laps in both of those races.
50:52As far as today, talked to the team earlier,
50:54and they told me they felt good about the car yesterday.
50:56Expected to qualify a little bit better, qualified eighth.
50:59They said track position is going to be key
51:01as Kyle Larson looks to break this 31 race winless streak.
51:05Row number five, Austin Sendrick,
51:07and the guy that we always expect to put on a show,
51:10Carson Hosobar.
51:11Row number six, four-time Bristol winner, Denny Hamlin,
51:15and on his outside, his own driver, Bubba Wallace.
51:19Row number seven, Daniel Suarez in a Chevrolet,
51:21and Christopher Bell, who won here last fall
51:24and won the truck race this Friday night.
51:27Here's Regan Smith.
51:28Mike, Christopher Bell, as you just mentioned,
51:30has been extremely good here at Bristol.
51:32Seven of his nine Cup starts have resulted in top ten finishes,
51:35and he's got the best average in the field of any driver
51:38in terms of finishing results,
51:39plus those two wins that you just mentioned.
51:42But as Crew Chief Adam Stevens told me earlier today,
51:44the margin for these cars today
51:46between being very good and out of control is razor thin.
51:50They're going to have to keep up with that race car
51:51in the track all day long
51:52if they expect to get their second consecutive Cup Series win
51:55here at Bristol.
51:57Now here's our Crew Chief on driver comfort.
51:59Here's Larry McReynolds.
52:00You know, Mike, as fast as drivers are running around
52:03this half-mile-high bank track,
52:04the safety features of their cockpit is so important.
52:07But also considering this race is 500 laps,
52:10the driver's comfort is very important as well.
52:12Look at Sir Gyro Cam from yesterday in car.
52:16Driver running around this track
52:18with 24-plus degrees of banking.
52:20Look at what they're experiencing.
52:21Look at what their body is going through.
52:23Now let's go to our Toyota Camry cutaway car,
52:27and we'll look at some of these items.
52:29Drivers will adjust to try to stay as comfortable as possible
52:32around this half-mile track.
52:34Starts with a headrest.
52:35They will add foam to the right side
52:37where the driver's head has something to lay against in those corners.
52:40Let's go down to the knee knocker between the driver's knees.
52:43Foam added to the left side.
52:45While in the corner, his knee doesn't flop over to the right,
52:48but he's going through those corners.
52:49So Wyatt Briscoe, in the turns with the car fully loaded,
52:53the driver experiences three Gs of force vertically and latterly to the right.
52:58These are the same G-forces of an astronaut Artemis II experience during the launch.
53:02But guys, think about this.
53:04Twice every 15 seconds, 16 seconds, three Gs roughly eight times per minute.
53:10I can close my eyes and think about it.
53:13I can feel it, Larry.
53:14This place wears you out, and that headrest is so important.
53:17You take that out, I don't know.
53:19I think you're headed to be over there against the side glass on the other side, Kevin.
53:24Bush Light giving you the chance to take home $1,000 today.
53:27Follow at BushBeer on social and enter using hashtag BushAllForOne,
53:33hashtag sweepstakes during every lap that ends in a one for your chance to win.
53:40That's 50 chances, fellas.
53:43So many laps ended in a one.
53:44I'll tell you what, a nice cold one of those would be pretty good in this afternoon.
53:47Sure, 80 degrees, some high clouds, mostly blue skies here.
53:52The track temp is 125.
53:54Now, yesterday at the start of practice, it was 115,
53:58and by the end of qualifying under cloudy conditions, it was down to 99 degrees.
54:02So the hottest it's been here in several years for the spring race.
54:06And there you see that traction compound on the inside of the racetrack
54:09where the inside rows that left side tires are in.
54:12Very important.
54:13They're going to be on that.
54:14It's ultra-sticky, Kevin.
54:16Yeah, and you see your leader right there, Ryan Blaney,
54:17chose the outside lane.
54:19Preferred lane on the restarts.
54:20Here we go.
54:21And you see why he chose it.
54:26Ross Chastain, way up top on the very first lap.
54:29It's going to get him at least a second.
54:31That was a great move by Chastain.
54:38Oh.
54:39See, Kyle Larson looked like he bounced off the wall right there down the front straightaway.
54:44If he didn't, it was close.
54:46Larson battling Riley Herbst, who has his best-ever cup start.
54:50He was only the third driver to go out to qualify.
54:52We thought early drivers to go would be at a disadvantage,
54:55but that's when the track was warmest,
54:57and he was rewarded with a great lap.
54:59Okay, this is where you see him now that they've locked on.
55:02You're looking at Bell right there, getting in line.
55:04There, and he followed suit.
55:06You get stuck out.
55:07See Ty Gibbs on the outside?
55:09You have to be careful.
55:10He slid up, but he didn't want to be there.
55:12You can lose a lot of spots quick.
55:14Gibbs started fifth.
55:15He's fallen out of the top ten in that quickly.
55:18Four laps.
55:19Cars lose.
55:21Yeah, and we've seen so many changes.
55:23Well, we expect a lot of changes to these cars as these guys went from practice.
55:27There was a lot of cars that were all over the place,
55:29so, you know, a lot of times you fire off right here,
55:32and the car doesn't handle very well,
55:33and he's tied Gibbs in a spot right here he doesn't want to be in in that second lane,
55:38so not a fun situation to start the race here for the 54.
55:42Swares to the inside, and Gibbs forces his way in line in front of Zane Smith
55:47with Noah Gregson trying to give him a bumper tap.
55:50Gregson couldn't get down.
55:51Smith may get that spot.
55:53That's the first side-by-side battle.
55:54And he just couldn't waste any more time.
55:56He had to force the issue to get down.
55:57It's one thing to play nice,
55:59but sometimes you just got to put an end to it and take a chance.
56:02No rubber up in that second groove.
56:05Not yet.
56:06But that will all change as this race unfolds.
56:10And it's not going to take long for that top to rubber in.
56:13Once this traction compound starts to, you know, wear off a little bit,
56:17and the speeds come down, you'll see guys jump up the racetrack.
56:21We've had the O'Reilly race yesterday where the cars moved up the racetrack,
56:26but it's going to take some time to get this bottom lane worn down.
56:29Michael McDowell, 23rd.
56:30He drops in line in front of Ricky Stenhouse.
56:35And there's Cole Custer trying to come from the back from 30th spot.
56:41He's picked up one there against Kyle Busch.
56:43Yeah, and right now, these guys at the back of the pack,
56:46they want to do everything they can to move forward.
56:48But it's really hard to move forward when you have that traction compound
56:52on the bottom of the racetrack because everybody's so hooked up.
56:55And the only way to really move them out of the way is to knock them out of the way.
56:59Remember, William Byron had to go to the rear
57:01because they changed a steering rack this morning.
57:03He has made almost no forward progress.
57:07It is so difficult to pass here in the early going when it's a one-groove racetrack.
57:11Well, and the other thing is everybody's tires are new.
57:15And so, you know, we've got to get some wear on the tires
57:18to start to showcase some of the handling differences between the cars.
57:22So it's going to take a little bit.
57:24It's going to take 25, 30 laps for it to really show up.
57:28Yeah, and it's showing up fast for these leaders that Ryan Blaney's putting really fast laps down
57:34and catching the tail end of the pack quick.
57:36Well, he is literally a straightaway behind the last place car.
57:39As we're on board with William Byron, who's running in 34 spot,
57:43he's going to have to get going because he's going to be the guy that sees that leader come up
57:48pretty quick
57:49with where he started.
57:50But usually what happens in that situation, those guys start to get desperate at the back of the pack
57:54and they aren't going to give up the bottom.
57:57So Blaney's going to have to make a decision to either use the front bumper or go somewhere else.
58:01So as everybody settles in with the traction compound down in the lowest four feet of the racetrack,
58:06that's where everybody's running.
58:07And this track just becomes the world's fastest conveyor belt.
58:10But this is exactly by design.
58:12And watch me, folks, and trust me.
58:14As soon as Ryan Blaney catches that pack, you're forced to go somewhere else.
58:18And that's where it gets tricky.
58:19He has to stay going because that second-place car will catch him in a hurry.
58:23And really, it's a game as we're on board with Chase Briscoe right here,
58:27our Toyota Racing Gyro Cam.
58:28It really gives you a great sense of what the drivers are going through.
58:32As you go down into the banking, the driver loads up in the seat right there
58:37with those three Gs like Larry was talking about
58:39and really flattens out on the entries and the exit of the corners.
58:42So things happen fast here at Bristol.
58:47And thanks to the fellows at BSI that do all of our onboard camera installs and development.
58:52That's the best gyro cam I've seen.
58:54Well, yeah, the timing of it's actually right.
58:56And it really gives you a good indication of when the banking is changing
59:00and all the things that are happening.
59:01It's the perfect racetrack to showcase that, too.
59:05And listen to the throttle a lot.
59:07Like, when he's going, you come off the gas and it's red.
59:10And it really canise it more in time, when the wholly anda is.
