01:02the bottom and when this group flips you know somewhere at this at this race today you're going to see
01:08some cars that weren't as good on the bottom be really good on the top so this is going to
01:12have this is going to be a tale of two stories as we go through this afternoon
01:24Ryan Blaney has lapped Chad Fincham the only non charter car in the field making an occasional start here in
01:33the Cup Series and now pulls down on Cody Ware the 36th place car I've been watching William Byron in
01:39that 24 car just what a couple of cars in front of these two he's already trying to move around
01:45a little bit and feel that outside but you can see the grip on the bottom the good news is
01:50as hot as it is today
01:51I would think that that's going to wear up even faster yeah and you'll start to see like we did
01:57yesterday that that bottom groove will start to lighten up where those left side tires have picked that traction compound
02:02up but you're seeing the rubber go down on the right sides right here on William Byron's Valvoline on board
02:08so he he's got a he wants to move up and try some things but he just doesn't have a
02:13lot of time to give up no leader right behind him yeah don't take that shot out the back of

02:21the only way you could do that it's get up there and clean that up and that's exactly what he's

08:11And there's just nothing worse here at Bristol than to have to turn right to go down into the corner.
08:18And I think sometimes you might want to move up the racetrack a little bit to try to not have
08:22to turn that car so hard into the corner.

08:26Well, Kevin switched over to Ty Gibbs in the number 54 car after we saw him lose all those spots
08:30on the topside at the start of the race.
08:32He's been silent on the radio so far.
08:34Hasn't said anything about the car or losing those positions.
08:37And that's exactly what crew chief Tyler Allen told me that they've been doing all year long.

09:27As you see Nemechek try to stay on the lead lap in front of Kyle Larson.
09:30Yeah, Nemechek moved up like he was going to try to pass Cole Custer with the leaders right behind him.

09:43Just like we saw with Larson, that was pretty high.
09:45That track is ground up there, but you have to kind of work into it and get that rubber built

09:56Yeah, I don't think Kyle Larson liked the fact that Nemechek was intentionally trying to do that.
10:00But he's got to do everything he can to try to stay on a lead lap and banging doors again

10:10Yeah, and I think that the process of moving up the racetrack as you watch the five work his way
10:15under Cole Custer on the bottom,
10:17the process of moving up the racetrack is trying to stay right at the top of that, the black rubbered
10:22in groove that you can see.
10:24You've got to have a narrow entry and diamond that corner and just wait for that groove to spread out
10:30on the entry and exit.
10:31Christopher Bell on that 20, he's the class of the field right now.
10:34He has picked up 10 spots from where he started.
10:39And starting spot, not indicative of how fast a car is.
10:42The top 10 on the grid were covered by exactly one-tenth of a second.
10:47That's how close this field was.
10:49But Bell had to overcome, well, five rows worth of cars to get where he is right now.
10:54And they've only slowed down like a half a second, six-tenths of a second.
10:57So, but at Bristol, that's a lot.

17:29but you leave the pits and go back up on the racetrack on the same side that you enter.

17:35You have to run the whole pit road all the way around,
17:39and Tyler Reddick was snapped for speeding in block number four
17:42at the top there above the RI in Bristol.

17:53or you have him trying to speed up for the curve,
17:55but for him, let's see what he said first.

19:24Dylan, Ty Dillon, and Cody Ware.
19:26Here we come to the Echo Park Automotive Restart Zone
19:29to complete lap 70.
19:36That's a pretty good restart on old tires
19:39for Elliott on the bottom.
19:42Except for the guys with new tires on top.
19:44Well, that's a massive deficit there,
19:48especially on the not preferred line on the bottom.
19:50Yeah, and right now, Kyle Larson,
19:52he's just much more comfortable
19:53moving his car around the racetrack.
19:55He raced on Saturday.
19:56You see him right up the top of the black
19:59with the groove moving up the racetrack,
20:03and now he's back on the bottom,
20:04knows that's the fastest way around,
20:05but those guys up front struggled
20:07to get their cars to turn,
20:08and he was able to carry that momentum around him.
20:10But look at Blaney,
20:11struggling to get down and get in line,
20:13and Bell, thank you guys,
20:15continue to be the fastest on pit road,
20:17put him up front in second place
20:19and got him around a hard car
20:20that's going to be to pass in Blaney.
20:23Did it on pit road.
20:25In yesterday's race,
20:26quite a bit of three wide racing
20:28through the corners here
20:30as things sorted out.
20:32Chastain on the outside of Herbst.

20:38how much more racy this racetrack is
20:40on this restart right here,
20:41being able to use that high groove
20:43compared to how it was
20:44at the beginning of the race.

20:50a little shot up the racetrack,
20:51but not able to get to the bottom
20:52and Chase Briscoe's
20:54able to get that position on him.
20:55He hit him hard enough
20:56that it took him up the racetrack
20:58and he's not going to open
20:58the door up for Briscoe.
21:03Yeah, and we've seen
21:04that one of Ross Chastain
21:07take off really good
21:08on all these restarts,
21:09but the last run,
21:11he faded backwards,
21:11and I think right now
21:12it's just the aggression
21:13on the restarts
21:14that's keeping his track position
21:15that he has currently.

24:20You put the softer tires
24:21on, they almost go faster.
24:23A little heat,
24:24go faster and wear less.

24:29and this cycle
24:30has changed
24:30the way that everybody's
24:32thinking for the rest
24:33of this race
24:34because of what
24:35Josh Berry
24:36and Chase Elliott
24:37are doing.

32:45door to door and trying to
32:45hold it off the cars or three wide.
32:48And Gibbs is running right about
32:50where he restarted after the caution flag.

33:38Yeah, and that's really not something
33:39that you're fixing today.
33:41You know, once it once it gets in those
33:43rotors and into the brake pedal,
33:45you're you're you're pretty much stuck with that.
33:47You might be able to put some tape on there.
33:49Usually they're too cold.
33:50Usually the two cold and running on the outside.
33:52You're going to use less brake,
33:53probably make it worse.
33:54But a lot of times what happens is you see
33:56Denny Hamlin get loose right there.
33:58A lot of times what happens is, you know,
34:00that pad builds up on there from a being too cold
34:02and you can't get it off.
34:04Hamlin's had a nice drive up to seventh.
34:06He's trying to take sixth from Herbst
34:08as we come down to the last couple laps of the stage.
34:10And Kyle Busch trying to hang on to the tail end
34:13of the lead lap.
34:14Bumper tag up there in front of the leaders.
34:17They're three wide with everybody trying to hang on
34:19to this lead lap.

34:23My boy, they were trying to wreck holding on to that last

34:33first stage win of this season.
34:39You know, hopefully we'll get to the point where where NASCAR
34:43and American Auto racing gets that respect that it deserves
34:46because there's so much different, diverse racing in America,
34:50I think, compared to Europe, that in my mind it would have
34:54to develop, you know, a driver that's just as good or
34:56potentially better than any other part of the world.

36:42Joe Gibbs racing engineer Matt Faulkner's son Jonas passed away peacefully in his sleep on Easter morning.
36:48Ending a lifelong battle with epilepsy.

36:52Jonas shared his passion for all things racing.
36:55Go karts, Mario Brothers and basketball with everyone he met.
36:59Jonas Faulkner was 16.

37:50Zane Smith called for equipment interference on his stop.
37:55It's Bell's first speeding penalty of the season and his first ever here.
38:01Connor Zilich gets the free pass and gets back on the lead lap.
38:06So 28 cars on the lead lap for this restart.
38:10Denny Hamlin will line up alongside Kyle Larson as they approach the Echo Park automotive restart zone.
38:16And the Chevy Corvette pace car ducks for cover.

38:37He's got a nice one.
38:40Well, we haven't mentioned Denny Hamlin's name many times today, but there he is shows up at the front of
38:44that restart right there.
38:46Chase Briscoe able to get around him and Josh Berry now on equal tires with everybody.
38:50So that strategy really paid off for that 21 car.

38:55A plus four for his pit crew on pit road.
38:57Them Gibbs boys have been putting in a show on on getting them tires on fast.
39:04Now two big attaboys for stage one.
39:06Miles Stanley and the Wood Brothers team.
39:08That strategy that's put Barry into the top five.
39:11And Riley Herbst who had a great qualifying run.
39:14He's hung in there in the top seven all day.
39:17Yeah, he's done a nice job today qualified well and really a lot of times that's half the battle right
39:23putting yourself up at the front of these fields and being able to get that track position.
39:27But as we've gone through these pit stops his team's done a nice job on pit road and he's doing
39:32a nice job on the racetrack to keep himself at the front of this field.
39:42So close of our underneath Blaney right there.
39:49Really had we've kind of seen Blaney kind of fade a little bit.
39:52He's he's got himself right there in fifth or sixth battling with host of our.
39:58You're not a good pit stop at all for that 12 crew 12.3 that last stop.
40:03Well, we've talked about the struggles that that 12 pit crew has had.
40:06We've seen him leave the wheels loose and sometimes it's just being slow and.
40:12We kind of expected him to make some changes, but they hadn't made any changes kind of stuck with their
40:16guys.
40:17And, you know, right now they're shooting par.
40:19Yeah.
40:21Tyler Reddick has picked up six spots since the restart.
40:24They had a long stop.
40:25It was 21 seconds as oh.
40:28Bell is around between turns one and two.
40:31He's been in the wall.
40:32Look at the right sides of those tires.

41:04Third caution flag of the day flies for Christopher Bell's spin down in turns one and two after contact with
41:12the wall.
41:25We've always had a fun fan zone here at Bristol for the Food City 500.
41:31148 laps complete with 23 laps into stage two.
41:36Here's the car that brought out the caution Christopher Bell.
41:39He has now lost three laps on pit road, making repairs to the right rear.
41:46You see him on the right top of your screen.
41:50Soon as he jumps in the gas, the car comes around, chases it up the hill.
41:54Bam!
41:54Yeah.
41:55Right into that right rear wheel.
41:56Hard part right about there's there.
41:58You see those light spots in the racetrack.
42:01There's bumps right there.
42:02He was loose just before those and you saw the car kind of bounce around through those bumps and pitch
42:07it in a direction that he couldn't save.
42:09So the only cars that made pit stops were cars that took the wave around on the last caution flag.
42:14Get them caught back up in the same tire cycle with the cars on the lead lap.

42:29They were reporting some low battery voltage numbers.

43:38Well, and I think the more he could slow him up, the better because that bottom lane just where the
43:42banking is and how the bumps are at the bottom of the race track.
43:44It's hard to get those tires hooked up on those restarts to keep them from spinning.
43:48And that's why those guys give up a couple spots to pick that with top lane and it paid off
43:52for Chase Briscoe.
43:55It's Denny Hamlin, the first car on top.

44:02Side by side for fourth with Hosavar.
44:17He's almost in that mix now.
44:19Yeah, I was gonna say you see Bubba Rawls right there behind his his boss man there Denny Hamlin.
44:24Bubba's been a little bit quiet today, but right there in the mix and inside the top 10 running seventh.
44:30Just needs a clean weekend.
44:31No mistakes again.
44:34Don't beat yourself.
44:35Martinsville was a was a tough one for them.
44:39Probably let his emotions get the best of him a little bit.
44:42Took him out of the race and knocked him way down the points.

44:54Well, and I think one thing about when you go back to Martinsville and you talk about Bubba and his
44:58situation of everything that happened.
45:00If you're honest with yourself, you can learn a lot from it and being able to analyze those things.
45:06I had to do it a lot throughout my career, but definitely definitely having a good day today.

46:53And you know when we heard the drivers and you see Bell go by right there.
46:57Heard the drivers talking about what they felt and they're just talking about the cars being light on their feet.

47:05You see that with Shane's car just slide back slides right out from underneath him.
47:09Very similar, just a different spot to the 20 car of Christopher Bell's spin.

48:41Two runs ago, he came on the radio and said the back end was just out of the track.
48:44But after one cycle on these tires, the car is coming to him and he said he's turning better.
48:50So things going in the right direction.
48:51And you guys noted in the booth how well his pit crew is getting it done.

50:13It's just so difficult to fire off on that bottom lane on older tires and the bottom lane just doesn't
50:19fire off as good anyway.

52:38Off just moved up both ends behind him.
52:42Yeah, it just seems like right now that that groove is really starting to spread out.

52:50We talked about Tyler Reddick and his speeding pedal earlier.
52:53He's worked his way back up to 14th right now.
52:56So, that 45 car has found a lane up top that is working really well.
53:01And most people not in it, Mike.
53:04What he's finding is grip that I don't see a lot of cars finding.
53:08There's some cars out of control out here, slipping, sliding around.
53:11Here's Reddick back to the bottom off turn number four to battle with Chase Elliott.
53:15This will be for 13th spot.
53:17Well, we knew this racetrack was going to go through some changes.
53:20I think as that bottom groove has worn out.
53:22We've seen guy 97 SVG spun out on the bottom.
53:2620 car of Christopher Bale spun out running the top.
53:29So, I think as this truck racetrack has rubbered up and the sun has been beating down on that racetrack
53:35all afternoon.
53:35A lot of these guys are slip sliding around as you see Lugano right there.
53:41I think he just meant to rattle his cage, but kind of hit him harder than he expected down the
53:46straightaway again.

54:14Well, yesterday in qualifying, Kevin, he qualified 20th.
54:17That was the worst of the three Penske cars.
54:19And I talked to Joey this morning.
54:20He said, the driver just messed up.
54:22I didn't do my job.
54:23And he said, we're in the ballpark when it comes to long run speed.
54:27He was actually optimistic, Kevin, and they have made some good adjustments today.
54:31That car started freeing up early in this race, and it's in his wheelhouse just like he likes it right
54:36now.
54:37Well, you add in the Wood Brothers car, which is prepared at the Penske shop.
54:40That's four Penske cars in the top 10.

54:43Yeah, I've been watching Tyler Reddick and his 45 car who has now moved up to the 14th position.
54:48They've got that car turning good.
54:50He's able to pick the throttle up much earlier than even Larson and Briscoe and stay in the throttle and

54:59They worked in the brake duck area of both fronts, the left front and the right front.
