00:02Well, we have been told that a camera was found in the women's showers of a women's
00:06only cabin in the HMAS Lewin, which was docked off of Cairns.
00:09Now, this discovery was made on the 11th of October.
00:13Senator Jackie Lambie told the Senate that she received a letter from a person who alerted
00:18her to this.
00:19She added there are claims footage from the cameras may have been posted online.
00:23Have a listen at what she said on ABC News Breakfast a little earlier.
00:26This is a culture that unfortunately Defence has not been able to clean up and it hasn't
00:31even come close.
00:32You know, they say we're having training.
00:34What we do know is that when it comes to sexual abuse that even the top end officers are not
00:38taking the training packages that they should be taking.
00:41They have had enough time to make change and reform and they have failed.
00:45The only other way, the only way to fix this problem is to take the legal system outside
00:49of Defence's hands.
00:52And so I want an independent body outside of Defence.
00:55And the ABC also put those claims to Defence that that footage had been posted online.
01:00But the Defence spokesperson refused to be drawn on whether that happened or not.
01:04They said it is being investigated by the military police.
01:07The ABC also spoke to maritime safety expert Jen Parker.
01:11Elements of our units and defence establishments are swept regularly because there is a genuine
01:17concern around espionage.
01:19And we see the Director-General of ASIO talk about this.
01:22Now, whether that would extend to crew facilities, that is probably unlikely.
01:28It's normally the more sensitive areas.
01:30So, I don't think you can really make an assessment from that on how long it may have been there
01:35or exactly what could have happened or what type of device it might be.
01:38Catherine, when we asked the Queensland Police and the Australian Federal Police whether they
01:43were investigating it, they told us to refer these claims back to the Australian Defence Force.
