00:01My name's Mike Grohl.
00:03This is my job.
00:05I've made a mess in all 50 states.
00:08A big one.
00:09Now, I'm packing my bags for Australia.
00:11Land of kangaroos...
00:13Look at me. I'm over here.
00:14...and didgeridoos.
00:17But I'll be doing more than cuddling koalas.
00:20Oh, her bum is soaking wet.
00:21I'll be getting dirty down under.
00:26I'm still trying to get my head around what I just saw.
00:30Coming up on Dirty Jobs Down Under.
00:33Die!
00:34It's bugs, boats, and blood.
00:37You just cut through your nails, doctor.
00:40We're going croc hunting.
00:42He just looks pissed off.
00:44Not for food...
00:45Are we gonna eat it?
00:46...but in the hopes of making our croc vomit.
00:49Oh, jeez.
00:50Yeah.
00:51For science.
00:53Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
00:55Oh, my God!
01:00I said, darling, darling, from the car to the road.
01:03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:08Australia is diverse, from endless, barren landscapes,
01:11to lush vegetation.
01:13The creatures are unique.
01:15I think you just rubbed a scent gland on me.
01:17I've been marked.
01:17Were you able to get there?
01:18And the traditions are ageless.
01:21You guys are getting hungry.
01:23But it's here, in northern Australia, that you'll find a unique, prehistoric creature
01:27of the water.
01:28The infamous saltwater crocodile.
01:31Which is why we've come to the city of Darwin.
01:36We're here.
01:39Here at Crocodilus Park, they've got over 1,000 fresh and saltwater crocs, for research
01:45and study.
01:48Ranging from hatchlings, all the way up to Eric.
01:51This zoptic beauty is over 14 feet long, and just loves a good bucket of chicken.
01:58Let's grab a bird.
01:59Yeah.
02:01Come on.
02:02Charlie Manolis is a park zoologist.
02:05He's going to help me give Eric a light breakfast snack.
02:11Come on.
02:12Probably best to leave that door open.
02:14That's it.
02:15Grab that.
02:16Just wait for him to come up.
02:17Oh, yeah.
02:18Always keep an eye on him.
02:22Stand back a little.
02:24Come on, Eric.
02:25I got a chicken.
02:26So why are we feeding Eric chickens?
02:28Oh, we've got two chickens.
02:30Come on.
02:31Well, aside from the fact that he's hungry, we want to get an up-close view of a saltwater
02:35croc.
02:35Can he hear us?
02:36Can he see it?
02:36He knows we're in here.
02:38He can feel.
02:40He can't see you, because he's got his eyes closed under water.
02:43So he's come up now to look at you.
02:45His eyes are going to open.
02:50Chicken.
02:52Come on.
02:52Come on.
02:53Let's go.
02:54Back.
02:55Back.
02:55Back, guys.
02:56Back.
02:56Back.
02:57Right back.
02:58Back out.
02:58Yeah.
03:00Now, you can throw that just in front of him now.
03:02Yeah.
03:03Quick.
03:06You've got to come back.
03:08Grab a second one.
03:11But just be real careful.
03:13Yeah.
03:13Get ready to go back, boys.
03:14He's going to move fast.
03:15Okay.
03:18That's it.
03:22Oh, Eric.
03:24Just back a little bit there, Mike.
03:26You pigs.
03:26That's it.
03:27Two chickens.
03:28You're right.
03:29Five bites.
03:30Two swallows.
03:33Wow.
03:34Probably got one more there if he wants.
03:36Okay.
03:36Eric, you want another chicken?
03:39Three's a charm.
03:41Let's see if he'll come up for you.
03:42Come on.
03:43Let's beat it on the ground.
03:45Let's see.
03:45Mmm, I got a chicken.
03:48There he comes.
03:49I got a chicken.
03:51There.
04:03Oh my God.
04:06That's such a big animal.
04:08Yeah, he would weigh probably 1,300, 1,500 pounds.
04:15wow he'd probably keep eating if you let him this is an accomplice beautiful and we could
04:22feed caged crocodiles chickens all day but the real reason we're here is for science we're
04:29going to study what crocodiles eat which means we've got to catch one and make it vomit so off
04:38we go the crow and I hit the road destined for the Adelaide River and the green northern Australia
04:44territory just around the bend from crocodiles park let's get this get you in I the estuarine
04:54crocodile is the animal we're looking for and the estuarine crocodile is without question the
04:59largest living reptile on the planet also known as the saltwater crocodile these great survivors
05:04of the dinosaur age have been known to grow up to seven meters in length the salty inhabits coastal
05:09rivers billabongs floodplains sometimes the open sea it's considered to be the top end's most
05:14dangerous predator in 1971 the saltwater crocodile became a protected species in the northern
05:20territory since then their numbers have increased steadily I know all this of course because it says
05:25so right here very helpful that we've got to go guys this is my boat yeah so should we hop
05:32in
05:36head north Adelaide Adelaide River the Adelaide River winds its way through Australia's northern
05:43territory for hundreds of miles before eventually dumping into the Gulf near the Indian Ocean today I'll
05:49be traveling with Charlie and the crew during the last hours of sunlight because the best way to catch
05:54these monsters is in the dark so the odds of us seeing them during the day are fairly slim with
06:01this high tide yes very very because I'll be in amongst the mangroves but even so it's so hot that
06:08it's um any crock worthy salts in the water yeah I see the crock coming out to see us look
06:13there it is
06:14there he is look that's why you're here Mike yeah there you go look so he's a modest size it
06:20seems he's
06:20only small there he goes they don't let you get too close the really interesting thing is is that the
06:29average size of crocodile has changed in 1980 when I first came up to the territory and started work
06:35on crocs the average size was maybe yeah a bit over a meter yeah now they're like closer to 12
06:41foot
06:42yeah so there's just bigger they're getting bigger bigger crocs and the bigger crocs are killing the
06:46little crocs do they have a natural predator the biggest predator on on crocs is other crocs
06:53keep an eye out for any more crocs the cold-blooded croc reserves its energy during the day they're
06:59lethargic they seem slow but don't be fooled they're capable of great explosive speed and power they
07:06attack prey as big as water buffalo and sharks Charlie and his crew are here to regulate the
07:12croc population to keep Australians safe and these guys will go to great lengths to do it
07:28just in here look oh yeah see him sitting there sure only a little what what do you reckon
07:35brits hey hey put it okay here we go all right yeah just here see if we can get him
07:49even if we just look
07:49at him yeah right so this has got a little harpoon head with a couple of barbs in it we'll
08:01just you
08:02just move on behind him on yeah those this croc skin is so thick that those little hooks just go
08:08in
08:08and they stay and all does it hook him and you got like a big fish yeah but we'll have
08:13to just keep a
08:13little bit quiet as he comes in right yep see if we can get him have a look at him
08:30holy smokes you got him wow wow yeah yeah yeah let him go all right get all tangled up time
08:37crap right you really threw that thing okay all right now that's the part i didn't anticipate
08:43hang on hang on back back back back to Brett Brett what are you doing brother seriously just watch
08:52your head on the branches guys see what's that holy what's happened is he's got he's gone behind the
08:57vegetation yeah okay come in there and we'll pick him up because once they get tangled it makes it hard
09:03to bring him in i'm thinking about Brett right now way steep in mud hey we're nearly out of rope
09:08here
09:08yeah i know have you got a float on it no mate you got a fair bit of line out
09:13there Brett
09:16okay Brett that's a big move is that the kind of thing you had in mind for me this evening
09:22no yeah because the whole leaving the boat in the dark and that was that was opportunity
09:28that was opportunity that was opportunity and you so we'll have a look at this one anyway
09:32so he's still attached at night oh yeah oh he's like 100 meters out there on on all your roads
09:37yeah for you we'll try and get one at night where they don't see you quite so closely I'm still
09:41trying
09:41to get my head around what I just saw you're right you're right we just dove out of the boat
09:46you just
09:46keep going straight mate we'll pull him up in the mud that was way steep
09:50that was uh is Daniel's side there do you want do you want to oh okay here you go yeah
09:57that would
09:57be him right here uh so you come on up here Mike yeah yeah yeah watch this line someone's got
10:03to get
10:03bitten it's got to be you bro right that seems reasonable I believe he's under the boat the talent
10:07we can afford to lose talent anything we want to watch we don't want to put too much pressure on
10:11that we don't want to pull the but the barbs haven't gone in real good yeah you can smell it
10:16actually that's me you might want to change your underpants I don't know what I smell like anymore
10:24yeah all right glad your pants are brown or without a car key to start with
10:32coming up oh there's the smell we go trawling for some tail
10:36watch his head doesn't come up because he'll lose your ghoulies right I got plans for the ghoulies
10:41hard part during the day is they can see you they see you coming up yeah at night time you
10:52can keep
10:52the spotlight on their eyes and they don't see you moment he comes up and he sees us he's gonna
10:57go
10:57berserk oh there's the snow
11:07there he is oh I see what you
11:17yeah Brett let me work this so it looks like I just gently tap when I when I say gently
11:21tap his nose
11:24oh it's in his mouth that's probably bad
11:31that little bit more
11:35yeah
11:42come on buddy come on you can do it so if I tap him on the nose he opens his
11:48jaws typically
11:52that's it he's all yours now he's all mine good good yeah so you've got him just around his top
11:58it's just the top jaw it'll if you put
12:01around both jaws they're closed he'll just slide off it slides away right there's nothing to hold on the top
12:07jaw that's it it's the strongest part of their body the neck what we got to
12:24to give you a stunning up close in depth look at this croc that we're filming unfortunately Doug our cameraman
12:31he forgot to press the on button
12:36so you get you get bit by one of these things aside from the damage just to the bite what
12:42what about all the stuff in his mouth oh man there's certain bacteria on there yeah they're not real good
12:47and what happens is when they do bite you really well the tissue dies bacteria get in yeah they've now
12:55learnt here at the hospital uh if you get a croc bite you don't don't don't um
13:00stitch it up yeah leave it open yeah because that's the last thing you want because you create a little
13:05incubator for all these bacteria I mean man these are these are a great
13:08unblooming machine this is a dinosaur yeah man this is the last of the dinosaurs yeah that's exactly right
13:14so the idea here is to close those jaws that's it and then tie him off yeah tie him off
13:20okay
13:20now don't get your fingers put because if he rolls he'll take your finger with you right so
13:25that's it yeah so around again yeah just do it man he's got some kind of breath on it that
13:33could be
13:33bread now okay just lift him up okay pull his head up above this now there that's it that's it
13:43that way we
13:46can tape him up so we're gonna be doing this in the dark truly secure this is the plan in
13:51the dark tonight
13:54yeah couldn't have worked better you've seen it all during the day ready bro okay
14:08okay this is all according to plan hop on him like so sit on him sit on his front sit
14:15on
14:22I got plans for the ghoulies okay so you hold don't let that go whatever you do don't let what
14:26go just go that one that's it I just tape actually hold on a quick word about the harpoon since
14:32I'm
14:32looking at it right now just under the skin didn't go into the meat no no it just goes in
14:35under the
14:36skin the hooks are only wouldn't see it when you get out and you can catch hundreds and hundreds and
14:42hundreds of these guys and know them affect them what we want to do is cover his eyes because once
14:46their eyes are covered they'll tend to quieten down you just go in just sort of pull the skin up
14:54so
14:54that hook comes out mm-hmm done not even a drop of blood let me have a look at this
14:59this is no blood
15:00not as scary are we gonna eat it it's important to know that now are we gonna eat it yeah
15:06no no okay
15:07we're gonna give you a little bit of a training run Mike so your goal we're gonna just put this
15:15in the water somewhere I'll show you the harpoon in a second now the object is to try and hit
15:20him
15:20in the neck let's bring your pole up if you can Mike just get comfortable with my pole with your
15:26pole yeah right-handed left-handed either way so you guys stand up here when this happens meet on this
15:32so
15:32I got to figure that's his head looking at me right now right that pointy part uh-huh it's actually
15:36his nose pointy part the front of his nose so you're he's looking the other way as we're coming
15:41up on him I see so I'm gonna hit him right the meaty part of the neck yeah the towards
15:45the back
15:46of his head that's it ready set go now oh okay not as easy as it looks it's uh I
15:54was uh you've
15:55got to be I don't think I made that look easy to be to be you hesitate the croc goes
15:59past you yeah
15:59that whole opportunity is lost styrofoam ball yeah that net there should have been that yeah
16:05let's try on this styrofoam ball hit it as hard as you can now power yeah now go whack like
16:12so
16:14uh you can't let go of the rope though I can't let go of the rope wait when you whacked
16:19it I just
16:19think it's impressive that I got the ball let let go of that rope all right careful oh jeez you're
16:28right once you go buy him you're buying now once you buy him don't even bother I'll be standing here
16:33behind you we'll be coming in about this man like this I'll be keeping it on his head yeah you'll
16:38be
16:38going well I think I'm still I'm just not you know hitting him dead on all right so I've had
16:46enough practice to prove that if I get one it'll just be blind luck but I've relied on blind luck
16:51most of my most of my career as the sun sets on the Adelaide River there's not much to do
16:58but wait
16:59for the crocs to stir we ready the crew and assemble some blinding spotlights and wait
17:07even the gator in the boat is becoming anxious
17:16make sure it worked but the crocs aren't the only things that come out at night
17:23covered absolutely covered mosquitoes just covered covered there's one rock there look at that look at
17:31the eyes jumping right as right at us he's just been sitting so these two guys are probably sitting
17:36there the whole time while we've been waffling on about mosquitoes you really see the answer now
17:43you gotta get right behind the light if you can good grief they are out in force can you see
17:50its eyes
17:51there you go right there oh that's okay just come in slowly look at that those eyes are red
18:03I think we've got a boat problem
18:11I think there's a problem with the engine so with one boat dead in the water we make a very
18:17simple plan John Charlie and I along with the camera gear we'll all go on to the working boat
18:22how do we fit the entire crew and all the gear onto two boats well we don't which means that
18:29we'll
18:30just have to leave a few of our folks behind true they'll have no working engine and yes there are
18:35hungry crocs everywhere but they should be fine as long as they remain perfectly still in the inky
18:40blackness and don't attract any attention but do anything silly like I don't know start a fire
18:45oh oh what do you got you got something lit huh well there's a fire in a boat things go
18:56very bad
18:56very quickly out on the river yeah we might have just a couple of seconds that engine went down and
19:00then there's a small fire over here seems fairly close to the gas tank though seems like they have
19:21the fire under control so we did the only responsible thing and packed up the boat and said farewell to
19:26the
19:26stranded crew and headed out into the dark to find some man-eating dinosaurs coming up all right
19:34let's try another one we're surrounded it's a good try it took us six hours we lost the boat we
19:42have to
19:42transfer all the gear oh infrared's not flattering at all makes us all look like ghouls
19:57the tide is low on the adelaide river we only have two hours to find ourselves a croc right there
20:03ash seems to be coming at us lucky for us the crocs are everywhere this guy's gonna let you get
20:11up
20:11right close i'm gonna come right up next to him have you got something on the end yeah okay well
20:22check
20:22that's all right yeah just just let the pole go that's okay let the pole go got a camera on
20:26there
20:27all right i'll get the pole see if you got something on the back of that whole lot of nothing
20:31but i did i didn't
20:35just saw three but they all went down maybe back up in there pretty far
20:48back of the neck sorry it's okay i ran out of slack
20:55no that's all right yeah you gotta watch you got you got him on the head
21:07it's too small i mean if you can tell that he was small but
21:11he might have been five foot yeah could have been six foot
21:21get him if you wanted where is oh right there
21:28son of a gun
21:31put him on the side of the head my gun on the side of the head and it still didn't
21:34stick in
21:35he went up into the bushes yep
21:38just wait for him to come down come out just come out
21:57he's going
22:09what's your motor
22:11just put that down there out of our way he's either coming toward us or he shook it
22:18no there he is there he is i don't know how well it went in so we're just playing real
22:22careful there
22:23mike we don't want to put too much pressure on in case he's only snagged just well in case it's
22:29just
22:34gone in
22:35there we go look yeah you're you're right on the let it go let it go let it give him
22:39some slack give him slack give him slack give him slack give him slack let it go okay that's it
22:43no he's right on the nuchals right oh yeah what's a nuchal
22:46uh the scales on the back of the neck is that good no there's a chance that it's in but
22:51it may
22:52not hold because it's bone what we'll do is we'll just get him up
22:55and we're ready to drive another one just for security
22:57yeah and then we'll have two and then we can check yours when we get him in sure
23:01okay keep that light keep that light right in these eyes keep it up though so you keep it on
23:05he's over here follow the line that's it right there he is
23:10okay back over here follow the line keep it on that line
23:18take us forward ash
23:26there he is down and right on the side
23:33come out yeah we still got him no come on oh he came out
23:39gee we lost the barb oh no we lost it uh oh well doesn't hold that's good that's good that's
23:44good that's close as close as close we were yeah you got him right there yeah towards the front yeah
23:50so you either go just forward to that uh-huh or down to the side of it yeah anywhere under
23:56there
23:56yep yep yep i got it that's just bone so that right they'd go just in there's nothing not enough
24:02to
24:02to grab a hold of him that's okay that was a good shot but no thanks it's good all right
24:09let's try
24:11another one the eerie glow of the crocs eyes are because of a layer called tapetum it's right behind
24:17the retina it contains crystals that reflect the light but also makes it possible for the crocs to see
24:23better at night hit him hit him in the head again god i felt it bounce right off the bone
24:36he's a good
24:37ten footer son of a gun maybe a bit bigger uh don't rub it in charles i don't want to
24:44swim this river at night
24:47now the tide is rising and we have yet to catch a croc nine footer bigger time's running out
24:56oh he was face i thought he was facing the other way yeah crap crap
25:10yes
25:14bring him in mike that you come this side mate yep oh just give me that give me let's have
25:22a look
25:22where it is just slowly just you got time don't you slowly bring him up okay that's good okay okay
25:31we just need a snout right got a snout rub okay need some light over here
25:42don't keep the don't have to keep him tight now all right let's have a look
25:56you get him
26:01my junior doesn't want to come up that's okay we got him now are we going yeah just relax now
26:05that's it that's it just release that just hold him in there see how he got it
26:17he just looked pissed off
26:27watch out he doesn't turn on you right those teeth that are jutting out that's it
26:32that's enough here yeah that's enough yeah yeah are you sure about that yep
26:36it's a lovely little croc thank you there you go okay six months on foot yeah it's a good try
26:45then thanks no it's good you've got your first croc there you go thanks you did well well you know
26:49it's a piece of cake it only took us six hours we lost the boat we had to transfer all
26:55the gear
26:56so we've got two is that enough to do our work uh tomorrow she's probably a bit small for what
27:01we
27:01what we really want because the scales here are a bit small for the transmitter so what we might do
27:07though is we will um we'll measure her we're going to give her a tag a mark and we'll know
27:13who she was
27:14now we'll just get ahead of her in here
27:22we got the rope so we're gonna let her go so now that the easy part was catching
27:36sorry she's gone push her up push her up there
27:43so we're no longer slowly make our way we've done done what we came out to do hi guys folks
27:50need
27:50any help all right so it's a it's pretty simple at this point we made it back by the way
27:54we towed
27:55the third boat in the croc stays in the boat overnight tomorrow morning we'll meet the croc
27:59at crocodiles with brett and charlie i'm not totally clear on the details beyond the fact that i'm going
28:05to bed now and we'll see you in the morning coming up a little internal medicine oh geez uh best
28:13not
28:14to look that's it that's it you're in that's it good man okay i'm in
28:27this is happening more and more to me shaving the shower i miss stuff and then all day long you
28:32feel a little patch right there can you see that right there it's driving me crazy so amber went
28:38out and got me a razor and we're still right here too and all day long you pick out you
28:41pick it you
28:41pick it you pick it you pick it you pick it that's where i draw the line man amber shaving
28:46me but not
28:46unless i shave her i can raise that back at crocodiles park the boat from last night's hunt has been
28:59parked overnight crocs on the back of the boat science will commence prepare yourself so at
29:07crocodiles park the crocodile is in the exact same position as we left last night exactly she's alive
29:12and happy don't know about happy but she's uh very much certainly very much alive what we'll do is we'll
29:17untie her i'm going to get you to grab the pointy end yes the crocodile yep and then we'll just
29:22drag her
29:23straight out of here put her onto this stretcher once we've got her on there we can sedate her get
29:28nice and quiet and then we can get organized to do what we want to do excellent and what that
29:33is
29:33that we want to do is make this croc vomit so we can study what it's been eating so what
29:40we'll do
29:42you work your way down there that's it and you can line her tail right up what do we got
29:48that'll nine foot oh you're going that one yeah nine foot three inches yeah so it's a nice sized animal
29:59this is a an immobilizing agent we don't want her well we've got her trying to get her stomach contents
30:04out struggling right we don't want her hurting herself we don't want her hurting any of us
30:09that's more important i'd even put it in a whole different order but
30:14all right start right here it'll be tough skin that's it push that in another muscle that's it
30:20that's all you need
30:31come on come on it's all right relax relax we're going to put her on this little frame over here
30:38mike and what we'll do is maneuver her up and down we'll get her head up so that we can
30:43put some water
30:43down into her throat so just give a bit of fluid in there so that we can then pull the
30:48gut clunk
30:52the sedative really seems to have kicked in
30:58yeah let's just let her calm down a bit that's what we don't want her struggling while yeah now
31:02while she's holding on that teeter-totter exactly dully just about anything you know rats swimming
31:06across the river pigs snakes anything that they can essentially grab but there is very little
31:12hardly any published information on the diet of these larger salt water crocodiles so what we'll
31:18get out of this one hopefully will be good we're just going to suck it and see a little bit
31:22with this one
31:24suck it and see i keep forgetting it's not an american expression is it it is i just don't
31:29think it means what you think it means not to belabor the point but what what what does suck
31:33it and see me down here let's try it out and see what happens give it give it a go
31:38am i getting
31:39that right it's getting worse isn't it you know what it actually translates in a very similar
31:44fashion yeah suck it and see uh the type should be in that orange are we going to get together
31:53again
31:53yeah suck it and see you get that with brett do you think get that in there's a future in
31:58this
31:59relationship suck it and see you think dirty jobs will get picked up for another season suck it and
32:06see okay we just had it with suck it to let's get you down the pointy end here mike all
32:11right the idea
32:12here is that we've got to get her mouth open uh-huh you know what's going to happen you're going
32:17to put
32:17this in her mouth and then you're going to reach through this aren't you uh one of us is going
32:22to
32:23i'd have gone with suck it and see since everybody seemed reasonably confident that the crock was
32:28finally immobilized we went ahead and freed her up so that we could put this high-tech dental ring
32:35into place and try and open her mouth and we're going to slip this in at the end that's it
32:41come on
32:42the ring is a large piece of pvc pipe and of course when dealing with deadly crocks a little duct
32:49tape
32:49never hurts either put a strip right across that's it that's it yeah it's just a oh she's making a
32:59noise that's it well sure now you can have a good look see that look at that can i touch
33:06your tooth
33:06yeah you can yeah yeah yeah sure but it's really these big teeth yeah that's the business these are
33:13the business and that really hang on to stuff and the back ones do a bit of crunching once once
33:18they've
33:19got the the prey excellent so let's try her up on the uh up on the what's the name oh
33:25you got the heavy end
33:26as always just position her that's it just to get started and so we're going to tilt her head up
33:34we're going to get this tube down into the stomach put a little bit of water in there
33:38and then once we've done that we'll then grab our scoop tilt her back up this way with a bucket
33:43underneath ah and try and scoop some of that food out and just see what she's been eating what's in
33:48here oil just oil just just to lubricate lubricate this a little bit and also when we do the tube
33:53that's it excellent that's enough keep going oh yeah no you want to lube this up don't skimp on the
33:59lube
33:59you can skimp on virtually anything but don't skimp on the lube
34:09it's amazing how much each one looks like the others you got him yeah it's not going that way
34:21yeah yeah you're all right yep excellent
34:26oh beautiful the stomach's just a little like a bag it doesn't have different chambers like
34:35other animals okay how far are you going about that far i think we're in it now you're about in
34:40it a
34:41little bit of water so you're saying right now the tube is tubes probably around here which is
34:46which means it'll be in the stomach so the fluid the water just helps to get it all mixed up
34:50so that
34:50we can you know okay bring it out just a little bit of water just slowly uh pour that in
34:57that's that's it
35:00just slowly that's it
35:06what is the saltwater crocodile's main source of food is it a fish b crabs c snakes or d toads
35:17the answer after the break
35:24saltwater crocodile's main source of food is b crabs but let's face it if they're hungry they'll eat fish
35:30and snakes and toads to them all right so this goes in like oriented like this yeah back through
35:36the back it's right there and you'll as you go through
35:43you're probably going to get pretty close
35:46a little bit of resistance there way in there we go okay so you're now in the stomach now what
35:51we're
35:51going to do she's a mature female i suspect that she's probably nested this year and often usually when
35:58they nest they don't feed they'll sit for three months ah so she may have so she'll have some
36:04but she'll have rocks or she'll still have bits in there you ready boys we're going to tilt her up
36:09so
36:09that she's gravity's going to help us here yeah all right yep okay mike yep there it goes
36:20now you want me to pull forward hey yeah you guys right oops that's it yeah
36:31not much in there not much in there you getting anything out no just a little bit of mucus mucusy
36:38stuff should get a bit of water come through though might have to try the bigger scoop yeah
36:43yeah this is the bigger scoop unlikely also known in golf as a driver she's just gonna twitch a
36:53little bit so just careful yeah come on come there you go you're in yeah okay ready
37:11she's empty she's empty she's pretty empty too you're screwed it's just a little little bit just
37:16a mucus i would say she as i said she's probably a nesting female which means probably has eaten in
37:22a few months well we didn't get anything out maybe we'll have better luck putting something in
37:27this white rock is actually a digital logger it'll sit in the croc's belly and transmit movement
37:33temperature other information back to charlie for study there's only one way to get it into the belly of
37:41course it is okay this just goes against everything that's it just gentle that's it just jim
37:59are you kidding me are you doing good
38:06that's as far as i can go that's okay you think you're in the stomach can you feel anything in
38:11there
38:11about here yeah yeah yeah okay then i got a lot better go well let me i'm gonna did you
38:17feel that
38:17second sphincter yeah yeah yeah i'm pushing it it's on the end of my fingertips now and i'm pushing it
38:24i'm pushing it okay push it forward a bit well there's the matter of the teeth this guy's straight
38:31move there this way a little bit just so that's it that that's it that's better good yeah that's it
38:38ah no that's it that you're in that's it good man okay i'm in i'm in okay feel anything else
38:46in there
38:48no no she's empty no she's empty let let your logger go yep and then out you come
38:55ah that's it excellent excellent good man good good empty ish yeah she's empty the scoop would have
39:12had bits of insect something on it had she eaten i've been in many holes that's a that's a new
39:18one
39:20yeah now comes the part where we do everything in reverse remove the tape piping and secure the
39:26crock for its return to the adelaide river charlie and his crew will tag her so they can find her
39:31easily in the next trip and as scary as all this seems we managed to do it without spilling a
39:38drop
39:38of blood at least there's just an additional tag that we're going to put on it'll sit like that
39:44it won't stay there forever but at least over the next sort of couple of months
39:47that seems that seems much more uh
40:03okay so maybe we did spill a little bit of blood it's okay here let's just punch a hole through
40:09that without stabbing yourself and we'll put that in just a little hole yeah that's it just to give you
40:15enough to now you can just put it through okay charlie yeah yeah yeah sure fine
40:24that's it done you all right yeah it's fine i just saw it slide under the nail there and it
40:31made me go
40:34cool yeah we just want to get her back into the boat
40:39through here that's it pull it through that's it done excellent excellent it's all come together so
40:49what happens now is you're going to take this back to where we will take it back back to the
40:54river
40:54put a transmitter on her back of her neck yep and then we'll just see where she goes i'd say
41:01she's a
41:01female she'll have a little area that she stays in all year yeah she just waits for the boys to
41:07come
41:07to her where she nests where she looks well typically what these shows do you know we we follow you
41:12back
41:12and we watch the majestic reptiles swim back in so it's natural environment to pursue a life of reptile
41:18fulfillment but we know that's going to happen we've seen it a thousand times so we're just going
41:22to let you do it excellent thanks but not until i thank you sincerely for your time and your and
41:27your
41:27uh and your goodwill it was it was great fun brett come here man you uh you're something else thank
41:33you
41:33with all the grandeur and mystery that australia has to offer i am a bit disappointed i didn't find
41:39anything in the croc's stomach i know not everybody can eat like eric but i was hoping to find part
41:45of a
41:46kangaroo something at least i got a great hat out of the gig yeah you've been a great help thank
41:51you
