A Sunshine Coast man remains behind bars as Northern Territory police investigate the suspicious death of his partner. Authorities say the man had initially told officers the woman stopped breathing after the car they were driving in hit a kangaroo on Easter Sunday. But police believe it's not the case.

00:02An interstate road troop now being investigated as a major crime.
00:07In the early hours of Sunday morning police say a 33 year old man called triple zero near the Barclay
00:13homestead.
00:14He reported at that time that he was in the company of his 27 year old female partner who had
00:20stopped breathing and required medical assistance.
00:22He further reported that they had apparently struck a kangaroo whilst driving west along the Barclay Highway earlier that morning
00:30inferring that she had suffered harm as a result of that strike.
00:34Just over two hours later paramedics arrived finding the woman with facial injuries but it was too late she had
00:43already died.
00:44At this point in time we haven't been able to locate any evidence of that particular strike occurring.
00:49Further information obtained at this time led attending police to establish grounds to believe that the deceased was the victim
00:57of an assault perpetrated by the male earlier that morning at approximately 1.30am.
01:03Authorities believe the Sunshine Coast couple were five days into a drive from Gympie more than 2,000 kilometres east
01:11from the crime scene.
01:12For the past five days the man has remained behind bars at the Tennant Creek watch house after being arrested
01:18for aggravated assault.
01:19With authorities still working out how the woman died police are yet to lay any charges or rule out if
01:25they'll investigate him for more serious offences.
