A woman has been killed, and a man has been seriously injured in a shark attack on the New South Wales mid north coast. Authorities praised the actions of a bystander who helped on the beach. Police have confirmed the woman was an international tourist.
00:00Emergency services were called here to Kiley's Beach near Crowdy Bay National Park around 6.30 this morning to reports a man and woman in their mid-twenties had been bitten by what's believed to be a bullshark.
00:14Despite the best efforts of bystanders and paramedics, the woman, who is yet to be formally identified, sadly died of her injuries on the beach.
00:22The man suffered leg lacerations and was later flown to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
00:30But the police say the quick thinking of a bystander who put a makeshift tourniquet around his leg may have saved his life.
00:38I just really need to have a shout out to the bystander on the beach who put a makeshift tourniquet.
00:44On the male's leg, which obviously potentially saved his life and allowed New South Wales Ambulance Paramedics to get to him and render first aid.
00:52What I can say is that male patient was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
00:58The courage from some bystanders is amazing and in this situation to put yourself out there is very heroic and obviously did give us time to get to that male patient.
01:08Camper and Taree local Robert Crossingham says he was walking on the beach this morning when he saw the incident unfold.
01:16As I was coming back to the track where I walked back up the camp area, I noticed people about 200 metres south of me down towards Crowdy Head on the beach.
01:28One was kneeling down and the other was standing up walking around.
01:32I didn't think there was anything suspicious so I came back here and it wasn't until I seen or heard and seen the ambulance and the police that something was wrong.
01:41Beaches from Camden Haven to Crowdy Bay will be closed for at least 24 hours with lifeguards and drone pilots also searching for the shark as investigations continue.
