00:00Giants reliever Caleb Killian, who was a big part of their second consecutive shutout victory over the Phillies to end
00:08this homestand.
00:09So, Caleb, thank you very much for coming on, and congrats on the outing and the win.
00:15Yeah, thank you. Thanks for having me.
00:17Yeah, man, super fun to have you.
00:19We want to dig into the story a little bit.
00:21It's really cool that you're back with the Giants, but let's keep it in the now for the moment.
00:25And can you give Giants fans and our listeners an idea of how you guys are handling what has been
00:32a difficult start until the last, you know, 24 to 30 hours or so?
00:38Yeah, you know, we're just trying to stay positive about everything.
00:42We know what we can do, and I think these last two wins and stuff are kind of giving us
00:48some momentum to show us, just kind of remind us what we can do.
00:52So we're feeling good. The vibes are good in here, that's for sure.
00:55But, yeah, we're excited.
00:57And so far for you, vibes are up and runs are down, no runs allowed.
01:02And you guys put up 20 straight zeros to close out this series.
01:06How much is pitching zeros and putting them up there not only contagious but kind of a competitive thing for
01:12you guys?
01:13Yeah, zeros are huge.
01:15And when we score runs, you know, that also helps with the vibes.
01:20You know, we love runs and keeps you positive out there and makes you want to get in there and
01:25put zeros up.
01:27Caleb, I know, I believe the best bullpens are the ones that have very defined roles.
01:32And you guys are in a spot.
01:33There's a couple injuries.
01:35There's some new faces.
01:36You're one of them.
01:37Can you sort of shed some light on that discussion within the team, kind of knowing what your role is
01:44and when you're going to come in?
01:47Yeah, I mean, this is my first year doing the whole full-on reliever thing.
01:52So, this is all kind of new to me as well.
01:55I've had little bits where I've seen, I guess, on the Cubs and stuff here about how it works.
02:02But, honestly, it's all kind of new and I'm just going with the flow and just going out there and
02:07competing when I get the call.
02:08And, you know, being ready in whatever role.
02:11You were mentioning earlier about the vibes and I know that Tony Vitello has the phrase, vibe it out.
02:16What is different about the vibe that he has brought that has seemed to be pretty infectious over the last
02:21couple of games, especially?
02:24Yeah, no, he's encouraging.
02:25He's really good.
02:26I mean, the staff here is one of the main reasons why I came back.
02:31I met with some teams this offseason when I got to decide kind of where I'm going and talk to
02:36the staff and immediately after the call, I was like, this is where God wants me to go.
02:40So, I really believe in these guys and he does a great job.
02:44Caleb Killian, for those listening who don't know, was a part of the Chris Bryant trade.
02:49He was a giant farmhand sent to Chicago in the Chris Bryant trade.
02:53You played some for the Cubs and now you're back.
02:56Can you take us sort of through that emotional journey for you?
03:02Yeah.
03:03I mean, I didn't really expect it when it happened, when I got traded.
03:09Kind of all a whirlwind.
03:11I didn't think my name was going to be up there, but I mean, you get the call and the
03:15next day you're on another team and meeting new people.
03:18So, that was a crazy time.
03:20And then, yeah, after I think I spent like five years there, I finally had the chance to pick a
03:26team that I wanted to go to.
03:27And, I mean, it says a lot that I came back to this team.
03:31Because I had good experiences here and I believe in the staff, like I said before.
03:36Didn't really have many bad things to say.
03:38So, I'm glad to be back.
03:40Happy.
03:40Very grateful.
03:41Yeah.
03:41So, like no hard feelings after something like that, Caleb?
03:46No, no.
03:47I mean, it's the business too, you know.
03:50But no hard feelings.
03:51I had really good memories here.
03:53So, yeah.
03:54I wouldn't be back here if I didn't.
03:57How tough is it to kind of have the yo-yo career that you did with the Cubs organization where
04:01you get some big league time and then it's back to AAA and you're kind of bouncing around?
04:06How tough is that mentally on a pitcher?
04:10It's not easy.
04:11Yeah.
04:12I mean, I think anyone that's gone through that would agree that it's not the best situation to be in.
04:17But, I mean, it's also my own doing.
04:18I didn't establish myself in the big leagues.
04:20So, you kind of run out of opportunities.
04:23So, I can't blame anyone but myself.
04:27Caleb Killian, Giants reliever, is with us.
04:29And I'm looking at even just, like I'm trying to see how many major league appearances you had before this
04:36year.
04:36Something must have clicked this year, right?
04:39Something must have clicked that got you this spot.
04:41So, what is it?
04:43You know, I'm not sure yet.
04:45I think it's a combination of things.
04:49But the new role, just kind of going out there and competing, giving my all, I think some encouragement just
04:55from the coaches too has helped my mindset a little bit.
04:57And then just trusting God's plan, letting him lead it.
05:00You open up 3-8 and you come back with back-to-back victories as you get ready to set
05:05on a nice cross-country plane.
05:07You mentioned the vibes are good.
05:08What's going to be kind of the atmosphere as you head to Baltimore and you don't play again until tomorrow?
05:15Good vibes.
05:16I think we've got a long flight coming ahead.
05:17But we've got an update tomorrow, so we'll get to rest up there.
05:21But I don't know.
05:22It's new to me.
05:23I think this is our first show playing.
05:24So, I'm looking forward to it.
05:26Yeah, I just realized that.
05:27So, now I'm looking at these numbers.
05:29Today was what?
05:30Like your 14th or 15th game in the history of your major league career.
05:35So, this is all new to you.
05:38Oh, yeah.
05:39No, I've never made opening day before.
05:41So, that was really cool to be a part of and experience.
05:44That was awesome.
05:46The whole smoke flag, American flag in the air, that was incredible.
05:51Just spectacular.
05:52Now, you just mentioned it's your first show playing.
05:54So, this will be your first road trip, essentially, as a major leaguer?
06:00No, I have been on a plane before.
06:02I guess this plane, they're calling it a show plane.
06:05So, I don't know.
06:05I guess it might be a little different.
06:06I haven't seen it yet.
06:07So, I don't know.
06:08But, I'm excited for it.
06:10I mean, they have to have described something to you, right?
06:13You have no idea what this is?
06:14This is something different?
06:17I believe so.
06:18Yeah.
06:19I think maybe the chairs are different.
06:21I don't know.
06:24I'll let you know when I find out.
06:25Probably no middle seats is what I'm imagining, you know, and full reclinability.
06:29And maybe, like, edible food.
06:32Yeah.
06:33Well, there's usually food.
06:34That they do have.
06:35Right.
06:36Right.
06:36But maybe this is like...
06:38And you do indulge.
06:40In the food, absolutely.
06:42What are you getting after?
06:43What are you looking forward to?
06:44Is it like crack crab?
06:45Or are you a sandwich guy?
06:47Like, what are you going to get into?
06:50Maybe they'll have Chick-fil-A.
06:52I had a burger last time, and it was good.
06:55Yeah.
06:55You need to eat to grow.
06:57I love that.
06:58He's still growing, ladies and gentlemen.
07:00Caleb Killian of the Giants is with us.
07:01Hey, real quick.
07:03What can you tell us about Flower Mound, Texas?
07:06Is that where you're from?
07:08That is where I'm from.
07:09Yeah.
07:09That's where I grew up.
07:11Tell us about it.
07:12It's like a town.
07:13Good spot.
07:16We're right next to a lake, so I spend a lot of time hanging out there, having bonfires
07:20or wakeboarding, whatever.
07:24It's hot in the summer, but that's why you got to go to the lake and cool off.
07:27It's a good town.
07:28Safe.
07:30I like it.
07:30I enjoy it.
07:31How many people?
07:32I still got my in-laws out there.
07:34How many people are out there?
07:37I want to say at least 70,000.
07:40Okay.
07:40Okay.
07:41What are you telling me?
07:4160,000, 70,000?
07:43Yeah.
07:43They got to have multiple Chick-fil-A's, and when you go, what's your order?
07:47Spicy chicken?
07:49Honestly, I'm not a big Chick-fil-A guy anymore.
07:52I was in college, but if they bring me a Chick-fil-A sandwich on the airplane, I'm going to
07:57eat it.
07:58I'm going to eat it.
07:59There it is.
07:59Caleb, thanks so much, man.
08:02Congratulations on the show, the show playing, the performance today, all of it.
08:06Thanks for coming on.
08:08Thanks for having me.
