00:00on the river islands guest line it's our buddy kevin franson hey bud what's going on what's up
00:06guys uh yeah no no i don't know the hot takes are coming out today i don't you know i
00:12don't
00:12really care too much to do hot takes so you don't need keep a pc i'll keep you see you
00:18don't need
00:19hot takes but uh but but we do need uh we do need you to shoot straight um tony vitello
00:25brand new
00:26manager straight from college 13 games under 500 what like if you were a player still in the bigs
00:35and a team kind of threw something like a curveball type higher at you how would you feel about it
00:43i love different that's the thing so like i like tony like i i like his i liked what he
00:48was in
00:48at tennessee uh you know you have a lot of giant fans that are gonna be like oh what does
00:53he know
00:53and all the stuff like save it like i i i like different i just like i don't like the
00:58traditional
00:58all the time on everything especially when it's been so traditional for the last couple years
01:04uh at the end of the day it's players like players are the ones that make it like i don't
01:09see them
01:09fighting against it at all what you do have is like at times a lot of underperforming pitchers now
01:15at one point it was the hitters and it was the pitchers and it's like you know can't put back
01:19you
01:20know things together um you know last night he's gonna get you know dissected left and right on
01:26what he should have done and i think initially i was like i can't believe they're taking out logan
01:32webb because logan webb was dominating but then you like you kind of let everything kind of settle
01:36and what's one thing that that logan webb always does and to me it's always be honest like and he
01:41will whether it's a good thing or bad thing right like in the media he's gonna say it exactly how
01:46he
01:46feels when he was said when he was asked like hey what do you want to do he's like i'm
01:52good with
01:52whatever you want dude when i heard him say that i was like he was done right like that message
01:58like
01:58if he would have said came out and said like oh yeah like i i was i was so ready
02:02to be in there i
02:03will fight to get in there and that didn't happen like there's that's that's something so then you add
02:08in the fact this is the stuff that like i feel like people forget about this is not an excuse
02:13you fly
02:13in at 4 a.m it ain't easy so you don't you have four guys that are in the pen
02:18with back-to-back days
02:19you don't know you don't probably have the full trust of guys in the back end of the pen
02:24that are the other four yet and they may might be the freshest but he played for the win last
02:30night
02:30if you couldn't tell with the uh the bunt and the safety squeeze and he ate to add on which
02:35was just a
02:35tremendous play but then it just didn't go the right way he went for the win they didn't get it
02:41because the nats are a pretty damn good offense and uh that won out yeah and it won out and
02:45i was
02:46also kind of surprised kev about you know in that top of the ninth where it gets to second and
02:51third
02:51after the pass ball and a 2-0 count and he elected to go ahead and throw a strike and
02:55the big hit
02:56ultimately tied the game were you surprised that they didn't just issue the intentional pass there
03:01yeah right away uh once it went off that was a bad zoo anyways uh i guess they went for
03:07the chase you
03:08know try to get one more to see him chase but you can't throw it over the heart and not
03:12to the guy
03:12that has the second most rbi in the big leagues um not we're not just talking like you know just
03:16for
03:16the nationals we're talking all the big leagues um you know cj abrams is so damn good and uh he
03:22got
03:23an opportunity to to tie the ball game and he did i that's one i would question that that's about
03:28the
03:28only thing i would question based on everything else i was watching and um you know again
03:34it's easier when when you're up 5-1 right then to make decisions and do stuff the 2-1 the
03:39the 3-1
03:40games that's where it gets a little hairy and and you know we've seen it on our side from blake
03:45who's 33 years old and done a a fantastic job with a uh the youngest second youngest roster in the
03:51in
03:51the show um but it's like blake would say like i've surrounded myself with good people he surrounded
03:57himself with good people over there with tony has right and he has buster out there to to you know
04:02pass ideas off of and and bullpen ideas it's not easy to build a pen you know i i kind
04:07of get tired
04:08of this whole thing like boach did this boach had freaking like unbelievable you know veteran
04:15back-end guys and guys that stepped up over years because they were they were molded into it there's
04:20not the established guy right now so that's a huge part of this right yep tevin franson with us uh
04:28on
04:28the nationals broadcast team former giant you know him well here in the bay on willard and dibs 95 7
04:33the game franny i want to go back to your first answer though when you said that if logan webb
04:39says
04:39hey the decision is yours that means a guy is done i don't buy that logan said that this is
04:46not the
04:46logan webb that i know this to me sounds like a pitcher who's a leader in the clubhouse who does
04:53not
04:53want to start a firestorm and he's protecting his manager does does does that make sense to you that
04:59that logan uh like that's not the logan webb we know that it would just be like yeah whatever man
05:05well that's why i took it to to heart with what he said because i believe what he says you
05:09know like
05:10he's he's honest uh to the media to like in interviews and stuff that i've talked to him about
05:15in the past especially third time third time back after off the il like he's you don't forget about
05:21this like he's only gone eight plus innings like i think it was six times in his career now it's
05:26not
05:26as much as people think and that's a that that's a again i i think if there was hesitation in
05:34any of
05:34his answer you you question it wasn't an hesitation that's why like i don't know i i feel like it
05:40was
05:41it was there it was uh he defined it and i feel like all tony wanted was just like hey
05:46you good well
05:48i'll do what you what do you want to do whatever you want makes me feel like tony just didn't
05:53get
05:53the answer that he wanted yeah it's strange because you know he's coming off and he gets
05:57the handshake from the pitching coach first and it kind of signals that he might be done and then
06:02he goes over and talks to tony v and you mentioned you know experienced people around him most of the
06:06giants core coaches in the dugout are guys who haven't held that role at the major league level before
06:12how much is that a hindrance for a new manager like tony vitello
06:19um again this is this is where it's hard because again the communication part right like
06:24how is their communication what is the all the steps that they have to go through and uh who talks
06:29to
06:29who and and who understands because i again you're going to go around you're going to find out how each
06:34guy is right back to back days you're going to go out talk to them you're going to try to
06:37find
06:37are you good you're not because the it's the only one that i was thinking that with kelly
06:41killing only through six pitches the day before right like he had a short outing again you don't
06:45know everything that goes on in their decisions because of like you know the 4 a.m travel is a
06:51thing everyone's doing it you know and and having to deal with it some guys don't recover as well from
06:56that so uh i think at the end of the day it's about whether or not you have the experience
07:02or not
07:02it's about your communication how do you communicate how do you have you know the
07:08i don't even know like the protocols whatever you want to call it for you know who's going to talk
07:12to who to make sure that we're good same page and see if you get the same answers and then
07:15come up with that uh as you go forward kevin i i wonder what your first impressions are of bryce
07:22eldridge
07:24uh he's a freaking beast good god i just walked by him about like five minutes ago and uh he's
07:31huge
07:33um you know 21 years old to have a beard like that is impressive huh totally not bad
07:40uh but at the end of the day like yeah he's he's he's got a sweet swing made the adjustment
07:44last
07:44night on that that double because i mean that's all the gotten him right six six six seven whatever
07:50he is he's uh he's got a lot of swing because that's what i feel like people forget about that
07:56like james wood is six six and there's a lot of swing and miss because it's hard to sync up
08:01that
08:01all the time but uh ball he lays down the left field line is pretty sweet very sweet and you
08:06know
08:06with each passing day it looks like he gets more and more comfortable and at the start they weren't
08:11playing him every day and now it seems like he's earned those stripes how out of the ordinary is that
08:16kevin when you call up your top prospect isn't it normally that you just play him every day from the
08:22jump
08:23yeah but normally you don't have a 300 million dollar guy that's uh right there too you know
08:27with rapi devers trying to figure out the spots that you're going to go with i think that's a part
08:31and trying to pick and choose look the one thing that i've learned here with the nationals managers
08:36and manager and coaches and they care about like putting these guys into great spots these young
08:41guys especially put them into great spots have success early then we build on that and hopefully it
08:46goes there and so like sitting around doesn't mean that it's like he's not successful they're trying to
08:49get the best matchup right at the end of the day and let him naturally get that that that confidence
08:56going and it sure looks like it now i mean franny i wonder can we talk about that 300 million
09:03dollar
09:03guy and bryce eldridge now that this has played out the way that it has does does it strike you
09:09as odd
09:10that that buster posey would acquire a long-term first baseman knowing that bryce eldridge was on the
09:18doorstep no i i will still defend i will defend that all day long that's it's rapi devers rapi
09:25devers one of the top 10 hitters in the game i don't care what it is this year like it
09:29is rapi
09:30devers like and you're gonna have you know this this moment right here at the end of the day
09:34you feel like at the end of the year i should say you're gonna have the the numbers on the
09:37back of
09:37the uh his uh baseball card looked very similar to what they are you know this at the end of
09:43the year
09:43because i i mean again you can't just always acquire a top 10 hitter has it come to fruition no
09:50but i i i struggle with people that question that like because you don't know that bryce eldridge is
09:56going to come to the big leagues and just absolutely bang from the beginning right like you don't know
10:00that there's a lot that you can you know in the time frame that you can have to see you
10:06know either
10:06you're gonna have these successes you're gonna have these lows in the whole thing but at the end of
10:10like it i i'm not hesitating trying to get the traffic devers yeah even if it costs you kyle
10:17harrison who goes from boston to milwaukee and now he's a phenomenal pitcher and likely headed to the
10:23all-star game what is it about going from one team to the other and you know maybe landing in
10:28milwaukee
10:29what is milwaukee doing with their pitchers that other teams aren't well just think about this
10:34he was with andrew bailey goes and follows andrew bailey right it wasn't hitting it wasn't working
10:39with andrew and him right that that wasn't you know uh a good thing i guess between those two
10:45uh they go to milwaukee in milwaukee and in tampa they have the elixir right for all these guys they
10:50figure out something they figure out your you know you personally really quick they have you try some
10:55things they move them over on the rubber they give them a better lane to to throw they you know
11:00they let them know that his fastball is that that good you know he went when he got traded back
11:05over
11:05to to boston yeah think about this like this is a fastball dominant guy that went to the organization
11:12that was throwing the most off-speed pitches right like that was just by design for them so it didn't
11:17make sense you know putting that guy in that situation and it felt like they just kind of brushed
11:23him off and milwaukee was just salivating waiting for this moment to get him and they got him
11:27brandon you know this uh this fan base as well as anyone and i think there's a there's a little
11:32bit
11:32of a chasm a little struggle here because buster posey is as beloved as there is an athlete in the
11:38in
11:39the bay area um but this has been a struggle and so for both tony and for buster it's also
11:46been a very
11:46short period of time overall what would you say to a fan in terms of like how how long of
11:53a leash
11:54how much time before you really start assessing all of this
11:59i mean it is so i didn't understand how people are so angry right now like just in general because
12:04it's like you're not even halfway through the season and you're so upset about like thinking
12:09that this is going to change it like but did bus or ever any press conference say that oh this
12:13thing's changing this year you know what i mean like that i've never heard that he was hoping that
12:18things would turn around and get going and the the desire the passion the players and start
12:23stepping up you know with all these moves um it hasn't come you know to fruition yet but like i
12:28just don't understand the quick judgment on uh tony vitello like there's been like he's been the
12:33he's been bryce elders right came up and right away you gotta gotta hit gotta do everything um you know
12:39there's certain things that i'm sure that he would like to have back as far as like maybe talking in
12:43some media but i i still think that they'll be just fine and uh you know fans have the right
12:49to do
12:50whatever they want say whatever they want uh how they i just never realized that the giant pay was
12:54gonna be this angry like i'm back on the east coast at times it's it's been a weird year it's
12:59like there's losing and then there's losing the way that they're losing and so i think you know what i
13:06mean like you know you know how it goes when a season gets like this right for sure and you
13:11know
13:11what i played on a couple teams that were were you know old and struggling and were you know limping
13:16into the finish for a lot of guys careers on the whole thing and um i get it i understand
13:21that
13:21but at the end of the day like buster posey's not trying to lose tony vitello's not trying to lose
13:27everyone thinks they're trying to lose just they haven't found the right mix and that it is not
13:32at the end of the day it it doesn't matter how like you're a hall of fame catcher if you
13:38you
13:38understand people better than most i would say in the baseball world is buster
13:44it's still so damn hard to build a bullpen in this day and age like if it's crazy people forget
13:51about how unless you have those established guys like i said with boats they had the established
13:55year after year they would get something new and and but they're all older and then they mix the
14:00young guys in until sergio is you know closing out um you know the game against detroit you don't
14:06you you got all this stuff that like it all plays a part of it but it's not easy to
14:10build a pen
14:10it isn't all over the league like you got a couple guys that are you know stalwarts and the guys
14:15that
14:15you're gonna have that are gonna close out but i mean look at detroit you know the pitching with chaos
14:21with uh with aj hinch i mean it's not going great with him you know and then everyone's gonna blame
14:26school school's not in the pen but their pen hasn't been good either so a team that was in the
14:30postseason
14:30last year two years in a row and and you look at their their pens and you're going that's how
14:35they
14:35build them and they've sucked so uh it's it's not easy at the end of the day it's not easy
14:41but fans have the right to do whatever they wanted to say i just didn't realize that you guys are
14:45so
14:45angry i just yeah level of frustration i think and you know just when it seems like they might turn
14:50the corner it goes the other direction and i guess kevin for me it's what point do you get in
14:56the season
14:56if things haven't really started to turn around at what point do you start to make changes not with
15:02the manager but with the roster itself i mean they're i mean they've been tinkering left and
15:07right right like bringing up jonah cox and then doing that type of stuff waiting for bader to get
15:11back and and you know the other day you're waiting you're waiting for willie and and raffi to you
15:18know have like a two long or two month long stretch together you know may was pretty damn good with
15:24them you know and and you see what they could do but the at the end of the day can
15:27you get everyone
15:28going the pitching and and the offense defense going at the same time because that their thing
15:34too is defensively they're not as dynamic as i thought they would be yep you know and and you
15:39know they've willie's taking a real big step back this year it feels like um so it's interesting to
15:44see like i louisa rise has been fantastic i get it i just have seen so much of him at
15:50second base over
15:51the years i'm like i i do i trust that i don't know i don't think so but uh he's
15:56done a great job
15:57there um so we'll see we'll see that there's i mean obviously a ton of time not a ton of
16:02time
16:02because the dodgers always going to dodger their thing and uh you know the the dimebacks are pretty
16:07darn good team too that are trying to figure out their way and and the padres are i don't i
16:12don't
16:12get them i don't understand them i don't get it no i got my got my buddy to get thrown
16:18out of a game
16:19though craig stanley got thrown out in dc former teammate of mine had never been thrown out in his
16:23life i'm like you got to do it in front of me right like two minutes after he got thrown
16:26out
16:26he texted me you're welcome it was best oh my gosh that's incredible that's a great story
16:32um hey great to hear your voice buddy thank you for doing it no thanks for having me guys
16:37appreciate it all right hi kev kevin franson yep uh right here on 95.7 again
