00:00Being at that game last night and just being completely, you know what it reminded me of?
00:06It reminded me of the Super Bowl in Houston.
00:10This was the Jake DeLome Panthers against Twom Brady and the New England Pats.
00:17And this was the game where Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake staged that wardrobe thingamabob.
00:23And anybody knows if you ever get a, like I wonder if you all know,
00:28if you ever get a credential to a Super Bowl, your head is usually hitting the roof of the building.
00:34It's like when you and I met at the Final Four.
00:36We were in the MUP, they call it, Media Upper Press.
00:40Very, very, very auxiliary is where it is.
00:43And so I was so far away and the phone starts going because everyone's like,
00:48oh, you're there.
00:49Did you see that?
00:50Did you see that?
00:51And I'm like, I don't even know what you're talking about.
00:53I can't see anything.
00:55And that's kind of how that basketball game felt last night.
01:00I was well home and in bed on my phone, which is what, that's what you do when you get
01:06into bed.
01:06You get into bed and you get on your phone and I'm looking around and I'm like,
01:10why is this game so controversial?
01:14Because, you know, yeah, you got people, you're at the game, you're looking around,
01:19you're saying hi to people, people are spilling popcorn, whatever.
01:22And I just wasn't paying close enough of attention to realize that something was completely wacky
01:29that was going on on the floor.
01:31But I can't wait for the next 24 hours.
01:34I can't wait to see everybody try to explain themselves out of this paper bag.
01:40Go ahead.
01:41I'm all ears.
01:42Well, you can call it a strategic mistake if you want.
01:45But when you get a spot where you take the lead and there's three minutes and change to go and
01:51the Warriors are just making their way down the court.
01:53And next thing you know, there's a whistle and a foul.
01:56And upon further replay, because, you know, the cameras are following the basketball in the backcourt.
02:00It might have been Steph.
02:01I don't remember.
02:02But the whistle blows and you hear the whistle off camera.
02:06And my first thought was two players got into it.
02:08Now we're going to have a fight.
02:10Because something happened so far off the ball that it had to be something like that.
02:14Blank you, no blank you.
02:16And now we're going to drop the gloves.
02:17But the replay was just McDermott going over and basically hugging Seth.
02:22And you're watching it going, what's going on?
02:24I'm telling you, the kids are with me and they ask a lot of questions at games.
02:29My daughter's kind of wired that way.
02:30She asks a lot of questions.
02:32But there was a whole lot of like, what happened?
02:35Like I didn't even see, you know, you're watching one thing.
02:38And then the whistle blows and the crowd is sitting there going, what happened?
02:42Our eyes weren't on that.
02:44And so I answered it the only way I could because my eyes weren't really on it either.
02:50I see the guy walk.
02:51Well, there was a foul away from the ball.
02:53I remember having that conversation with her.
02:55There was a foul away from the ball.
02:57But I had no idea that they're over there playing hack a Shaq, even though Shaq doesn't play anymore.
03:02Right.
03:03And we're doing it in a very odd time.
03:06Right.
03:07To a very odd person.
03:08And that's what makes it so just kind of stinky because there's three minutes to go and you're up one.
03:13Okay, if you're up four, let's just say, with 38 seconds left.
03:18Okay, you don't want them to have a various Curry hit a three and cut it to one.
03:22Or if it's a three-point game, that's actually the smart play.
03:25If there's eight seconds left and you're up by three, you're supposed to foul.
03:29Up one with three minutes to go, you're not supposed to foul.
03:33But even if you want to, to, you know, try to get a horrible shooter on the line, you don't
03:38foul Seth Curry.
03:39No.
03:40Who might be third ranked among Curry's, but he's still in the low to mid 80s, I believe.
03:44Is he third?
03:45I know Steph is one in the association.
03:48Yeah.
03:49He is numero uno all the time.
03:50Right.
03:50And I think Dell's right in there.
03:52Seth might be ahead of Dell.
03:54Point being, if you're going to do that, you're going to do that to somebody who shoots 40%.
03:58DeAndre Jordan, for example.
04:00Right, right.
04:00But even that, you wouldn't do it up one with three minutes left.
04:04Well, I mean, there were varying strategies there, whether you do it when you're behind,
04:09whether you do it when you're ahead, what have you.
04:12But this one, that's what I mean.
04:14I can't wait to see you try to explain your way out of this one.
04:17And obviously, the NBA is sitting there last night, freaking out, freaking out when Draymond
04:26does what he does.
04:27Now, let's back up because we never want to make the mistake.
04:30Of thinking that you all have just heard exactly what Draymond said.
04:34And there were multiple, as always, sort of legs on this spider with regard to Draymond's
04:41post-game availability.
04:43But he starts by calling out the Sacramento Kings for what we're talking about.
04:48And oh, by the way, if you don't sort of get the background of this, the idea is,
04:52is that Draymond and others were directly accusing the Sacramento Kings of an open tank
04:59job right in the middle of this basketball game.
05:02They were possibly going to win.
05:04They don't want to move up in the standings and therefore kind of down on the draft board.
05:10So the idea was, in a close game, maybe somebody from an ownership booth called out the bat
05:15signal and said, why don't you go start fouling people with the last name Curry so we can make
05:20sure that we lose this basketball game.
05:22Here's Draymond.
05:23I saw a team tonight foul Seth Curry with three minutes to go in the game for no reason.
05:29End of penalty.
05:30It ain't working.
05:32So, but, you know, we want to make some playoffs, so it works, I guess.
05:38I guess.
05:38Although, as he later pointed out, you can lose all the games or win all the games here
05:43in the final two weeks of the season, and you're either going to be the 10 seed or the
05:4710 seed.
05:48Right.
05:48So this didn't matter to the Warriors either, other than that they play basketball when the
05:54clock is running.
05:55That's what they do.
05:56And their goal, and we talked to Nick Fridell yesterday who covers the team, and he said that
05:59the number one goal is to get Steph rolling and get him right, and he wasn't at his best,
06:04but he got to play his usual 26, and he's getting closer to being the staff that you need in
06:09the play-in, and I'm thinking about the final three minutes even more, and I'm watching some
06:13clips, and not only after that ridiculous foul away from the ball, you can look at other plays
06:19that happen after that, and some of the Sacramento Kings players kind of gave up at that point.
06:23Like, if we're going to do this, why would I, I don't know, box out Steph Curry and get
06:28an offensive, or get a defensive rebound, and I'm looking at another defensive sequence,
06:33and they're all kind of just standing around, and I don't blame them, because if that's
06:37the way we're going to go about this, then why am I even under a trying?
06:40Well, I think that for certain organizations, that's the culture and the tone that has been
06:45set over at least the second half of this season.
06:47There's no penalty for not trying, or there's no penalty at least for sort of just, I don't
06:52want to say that the players weren't trying, but there's just, like, they're not buttoned
06:57up. You can see that they're not buttoned up. I didn't think the Warriors were very buttoned
07:01up last night, but their lineup is, you know, their lineup is different every game right
07:05now, and so that's difficult, but yeah, bottom line is, is that for a lot of teams, that's
07:12okay. That's okay. In fact, if you do go out and button yourself up, start playing really
07:17well, you're probably going to get pulled out in the fourth quarter.
07:20Yeah, you'll find yourself on the bench.
07:22Yeah, maybe these Kings players are like, have figured out how to stay in the game. Don't play
07:25so hard. Well, they were playing hard and they were playing actually pretty well, and
07:29that's why I thought the game for 45 minutes was a fun watch because it was a little undermanned
07:34Sacramento playing their hearts out and the Warriors were not smooth and great, but they
07:39wanted to win, so it was actual basketball. And I'm looking at the clip mark of the pods
07:44three that gave him the lead and it's just under two minutes. Steph gets the offensive rebound.
07:49He fires it out to pods and precious Achua is about 12 feet away and he sees pods catch
07:56it and he takes a slow step toward him and another slow step and he realizes I should
08:01probably go out there and close out. Then he sprints and pods with the pump fake, one
08:05dribble and he drills the three, but there's like three Kings with hands on hips guarding
08:09no one. So after you're told to intentionally give away a game, you're not going to go out
08:13there and try to ball out and fight and win.
08:15Can we put that on the table from everybody in this room? By the way, that's you and
08:20that's me. How do you think that went down? Just for fun. How do you think it works?
08:26Do you think an owner? Do you think a general manager? Do you think this is talked about
08:30before the game? Do you think it's an in-game situation or scenario? Do you think that, what
08:37do you think? How does this go down that suddenly the Sacramento Kings get word, hey, start
08:43screwing up on purpose? I think all are possible and I'd have to go to the, uh, the all 22
08:48as
08:49we call it in the NFL, you know, go to the Zapruder and see exactly how that played out
08:53because they take the lead by one with three and change to go. And next thing you know,
09:00operation we lose gets put into play. So was it discussed before? Probably. Yeah. And
09:06I think there's somebody who got to an assistant in real time and said, Hey, let's go ahead and get
09:11operation. We lose into play. And then you get word, uh, Doug Christie who tells Doug McDermott,
09:18and then you start fouling people. I don't think you're far off my perception and it's nothing more
09:23than that. But in, in this age of analytics and knowing how sports teams handle their pregame
09:29routine and how planned out all the scenarios are, I have to think that you don't need to say
09:36anything to Doug Christie during the game. I've got to think that right now for the final three or
09:42four weeks of the season, these teams have a plan. And, and if they are in a situation with a
09:50few
09:50minutes left to go, look, if you're up by 10, you're up by 10. We don't want to call that
09:55much
09:56attention to ourselves. We're not going to go out there and start shooting shots over the backboard.
10:00But if you are in a situation where a game is very close and it's within one or two points
10:08or
10:08either direction, Hey coach, go ahead, feel free to go through your process, not to like openly,
10:19openly miss every shot on purpose, but do what you can to help our team lose.
10:26I believe that.
