00:00What'd you think last night? Because the first thing that comes to mind before we get back to arguing over whether or not Jonathan did the right thing or the wrong thing at the end, I actually came out of most of the evening. Yes, they lost. Yes, they were leading for a good portion, certainly the first half.
00:17But there was some sort of a dynamic that I haven't seen in a long time, which was, I guess you could call it the depth of the Warriors, or somewhere in there, there was an excitement about what's coming in the long-term future.
00:32Like, this is the first baby dubs game I've seen where the Warriors look like they kind of have a future core, potentially, that you can start to think about.
00:45And I say that because Moody looks better, and because your boy, your boy Will Richard is a freaking baller.
00:52Yeah, sorry, Guru, and I agreed with Guru that I'm not going to claim him anymore, because Will Richard is obviously his own person.
00:59And I don't need to tug a war with Guru over who had him first, boo-boo-boo.
01:04All I know is I met him in Summer League. I've actually interviewed him twice now.
01:09I've almost had as many interviews with him as he's had games, but when I met him the first time, I thought, oh my goodness, this dude is real.
01:17And the reason why is because he has played 140 college games.
01:22And it made me think about Brock Purdy in a weird way.
01:25Brock Purdy was able to come in and be better than his draft spot because he played 60 games in college.
01:32And I can never stop thinking about Mitchell Trubisky, who played one year at North Carolina, and Chicago traded up, and the Niners traded back, and Chicago traded for Trubisky.
01:42All the tools, the dude played one year.
01:45And Trey Lance, one year.
01:46Trey Lance, I was going to say.
01:47James Wiseman, three games.
01:49Jonathan Kaminga played one year-ish in the G League, G League Ignite, and it took him some time.
01:57So my point about Will Richard is he came in as a seasoned national champion.
02:02He played 40 games last year in college.
02:05Well, I wonder if it's not going to kind of change the narrative, though, because it's almost like it's not a badge of honor anymore when you play a ton of college basketball.
02:15The league sort of feels like they've moved on from you, and let's be real.
02:19The only reason you play three or four years of college basketball is because your pro prospects aren't that good after one or two years.
02:27That means the draft and the league are telling you, yeah, you're probably not going to go.
02:32And then the league moves on and forgets about you.
02:34But now we're sitting here using it as a reason for somebody being able to hit the ground running when they get to the league.
02:41And it's like, well, then why aren't you all doing this?
02:45Why aren't you all exclusively doing this in the second round of the draft?
02:48This guy's the 57th pick in the draft, and he's now have one start?
02:54And in his starts, he's averaging 30 per game?
02:56Like who else in the rookie class can function like that or do that, hit the ground running in that sort of a way?
03:04So I don't know, maybe we ought to be looking a little bit longer at players who have a lot of college games under their belt.
03:11It depends on what you really want to look at and what you want that player to be.
03:15And I'm thinking about Cooper Flagg, who's played all eight games, and he's averaging 14 and almost 7 and 3, and they're terrible.
03:23Dallas can't win.
03:25And so, yeah, Cooper Flagg is coming in, and Cade Cunningham, another great example, a guy who was great in college, and he went to a bad team.
03:31I mean, even think about the 7'5 Frenchman, Ho-Ho-Ho, which actually works now, Victor Wemby-Nyama.
03:39Wemby came in, and, yeah, they were kind of terrible, and he has slowly kind of grown into it.
03:45And even like Chet Holmgren, who played, and then he got hurt and all the rest of it.
03:49So if you are going to be a seasoned pro on a good team, you can come in and make an impact more quickly.
03:55Yeah, so that's sort of what I came out of last night.
03:58Put it this way, I enjoyed watching them last night.
04:01I did too, kind of.
04:03I know, and then it got to the end.
04:04What a buzzkill.
04:05Well, then it got to the end, and you have to start sort of reasoning and rationalizing with the whole thing because it was turnovers.
04:14It was turnovers down the stretch, and I think even the stat that was running around on TV I think is a little overblown,
04:22the whole points off turnovers thing because if you want to do a deeper dive into the turnovers,
04:27I think the Kings only had 10 points off of steals.
04:31There are a lot of turnovers.
04:32Like if somebody travels, for example, it's like I'm not going to call that a point-off turnover.
04:36You take the ball out of bounds.
04:37Our defense is set.
04:39You just happen to score on the next one.
04:41I look more at specific turnovers, and down the stretch of that basketball game, when it was still very close,
04:47I know the Warriors were trailing, but it was three points down, four points down, five points down.
04:52Then they would catch up.
04:53Key moments in that fourth quarter, you had people just throwing the ball all over the place.
04:58Pods had a terrible pass.
05:00Kaminga had a rough turnover as well.
05:03They weren't the only ones, you know, and so we have fun with it when they're the baby dubs,
05:08and then at the end of the game, they look like the baby dubs.
05:10Well, and at the end of the game, the grown men took over, including your favorite player.
05:16I can't stand him.
05:1723.
05:17I can't stand him.
05:1816.
05:19And 10, including one.
05:21Ah!
05:22And that was right in your face.
05:24Russell Westbrook with the tip back.
05:26He was bouncier at 36.
05:28He was quicker.
05:29He got the O rebound, the putback, and then the big old growl.
05:34And as I was watching that, I'm thinking, oh, my God, if Willard's watching this, he might be...
05:38I can't stand him.
05:39You might be vomiting.
05:40I can't stand him.
05:41Russell flipping Westbrook.
05:43I mean, you've got to put some respect on his game.
05:45Oh, there's always...
05:46I mean, I don't gotta.
05:47No, you don't gotta do anything.
05:49No, I mean, he's like...
05:50He took that game over.
05:51He's a great player.
05:52Like, the guy's going to be in the Hall of Fame someday.
05:55It's never about that.
05:56It's never some sort of, you know, a diatribe on who they are as a player.
06:01I just don't enjoy watching him.
06:03I told you that years ago, this also stems from him.
06:07And I wasn't even a host at this point.
06:09But 1,000 years ago, when I was working at ESPN in Los Angeles, he came in studio to a different show.
06:16He was an awful...
06:16Thank you, Grandy.
06:17He was an awful person to everybody there.
06:21Like, literally did an interview where he didn't look up from his phone.
06:24Oh.
06:24I don't like it when people are like that to other people.
06:28Yeah.
06:28And, you know, and so that started the whole process.
06:32But then you get through, you know, put some respect on his...
06:36I would actually argue you have to put, at times, some disrespect on his game.
06:40He, last year...
06:42Not last night, but last year in Denver, this is a guy who consistently made horrible decisions at major moments.
06:50At times in playoff games.
06:52And so, he's the type then who would come to the press conference after all of those things.
06:57And he would explain it away.
07:00And he would blow it off.
07:01And he's had the interactions with fans the last few years.
07:04I don't enjoy the man.
07:05I don't enjoy watching him play.
07:07I don't enjoy the way he reacts to fans, to teammates, to opposing players.
07:14It's funny that you would say put some respect on Russell Westbrook's name.
07:17I think that he has done a lot to disrespect a lot of the people around him everywhere he's ever been.
07:23Yeah.
07:23My take.
07:24Not last night.
07:25I mean...
07:25No, last night.
07:25It's just a basketball game.
07:26Last night, that game was in the balance.
07:29And the baby dubs were spitting up all over themselves, as babies do, with the bib on.
07:34Goo-goo-ga-ga.
07:35They had an 11-point lead, and they gave it up.
07:37And then Russ took over.
07:39And also, Dennis Schroeder revenge game.
07:42Schroeder came through with a couple of big plays late.
07:44And I hated to watch it.
07:46So, you're talking about, like, oh, we watched it.
07:48And, you know, it was kind of fun.
07:49And then it got not to be very fun.
07:52And the reason why it wasn't very fun is because Russ and Schroeder and the young pups, they weren't quite ready.
07:57And so, yeah, the Warriors, you're 5-4.
08:00And, you know, Grandy, I don't know if you can do the projection now about you're over 48-and-a-half.
08:06But I'm guessing that they're not on pace to win more than 48-and-a-half.
08:10Well, we joked yesterday that we knew...
08:12No, he joked.
08:13He tried to put that in my face.
08:14We said that if they lost last night, the math wouldn't necessarily...
08:18I mean, we're doing math after nine games.
08:19It's something now that Grandy's in the restroom.
08:21I get that.
08:22Nobody is worried about this team.
08:26I'm not worried.
08:27But yesterday, Grandy did the, oh, what's the pace now?
08:30Mm-hmm.
08:31So, I'm putting it back on him.
08:33What's the pace now, Captain 48-and-a-half, easy money?
08:36You need to calm down.
08:37No, I don't need to calm down.
08:39I need to calm up.
08:39It's a summit, dude.
08:41You need to calm down.
08:42You need to stop taking things so personally from him.
08:45It's not personal.
08:46You're making it personal.
08:48He thinks they're going to win 49 games.
08:50So do I.
08:51He said it was easy money.
08:52Why don't we ask the audience?
08:53Easy money was the phrase.
08:55Y'all think the Warriors are going to win 49 or more games this year?
08:58Just a round of applause.
09:00All right.
09:01Who thinks they're winning 48 or less?
09:03There you go, Dan.
09:04Oh, yeah.
09:05There you go.
09:06And that's a good, fair audience.
09:08Sure.
09:08I mean, who's Grandy?
09:10The guy literally hosts the pre and post for the Warriors.
09:13Right.
09:14Why is he not allowed to be a fan, too?
09:15He's allowed to do whatever he wants.
09:17But when he comes at me yesterday with, oh, they're on pace for 51.
09:21Hoo-hoo-hoo.
09:22I'm also allowed to, the next morning, come at him with the same thing.
09:26You've used up your French thing.
09:27And come at him and say, oh, where you at now, Grandy?
09:31And now, all of a sudden, he's Marcel Marceau.
09:33He's in the same place he's always been.
09:34Another French reference.
09:35Yeah, he's in the same place that he's always been, as all of us are.
09:39I mean, I'll ask you.
09:40Like, are you?
09:41Is that basically what you're saying right now?
09:43You're worried about this team?
09:44I'm definitely worried.
09:45You are?
09:46I've been worried.
09:47Why?
09:48Because you've got an older team that is not going to play every game.
09:52And when they don't all play, they are not as good of a team as, I don't know, maybe half the conference.
09:58I don't know.
09:59Or a third of the conference.
10:00Haven't we learned this over and over and over again?
10:02No Denver tomorrow, no Steph.
10:04Right.
10:05What do you think?
10:05I think they'll probably lose.
10:07And then there'll be 5-5, 10 games into the year.
10:10Right.
10:11They were under .500 at the trade deadline last year.
10:14On pace for 41-41 if they lose tomorrow.
10:16Yeah, and they still won 48 games.
10:18I don't care what their pace is 10 games in.
10:22Who cares?
10:23Why would we even talk about that right now?
10:25Like, this journey needs to unfold.
10:28It's got a long way to go and 1,000 different twists and turns.
10:33I am much more, I am less activated by their record right now.
10:36And I'm much more interested in the pieces that we see, whether you think they're, what they fit,
10:42what is sort of the ceiling for the group.
10:45Steve Kerr is going to join us in 15 minutes.
10:47I guarantee you're going to hear the word turnovers a lot.
10:50I promise you.
10:51You're going to hear the word turnovers a lot.
10:53But this team can't play like this and win 49 games.
10:58But I don't think they're going to play like this all of the time.
11:01Now, as far as injuries that may or may not occur, I can't tell you that they won't.
11:06I can't promise you that they will.
11:09I know everyone loves to say that, oh, because they're older, they'll definitely have injuries.
11:13Not necessarily.
11:14And you know what?
11:16Look at Kaminga last year.
11:1822-year-olds can get hurt.
11:20So I have no idea the way that's going to go.
11:22But when I look at the team and I watch them actually play basketball, they're very, very good.
11:29They have a lot of the pieces.
11:31It needs to be fine-tuned.
11:33They need to figure out their rotations.
11:35Happens at the beginning of every year.
11:37But this team has so much depth, way more than they had last year and in recent years.
11:42And that's what excited me about last night.
11:44To have three, some would say even four young players kind of perform at least statistically the way they did last night creates one of those interesting problems to have going forward as far as their lineup.
11:58In loss.
11:59Yeah, so what?
12:00So they didn't play their best three players.
12:02They lost a close game in the ninth game of the year.
12:04I'm not going to overreact to that.
12:06I'm not overreacting.
12:07I'm just pointing out.
12:08And you can applaud their depth, and I do too.
12:10But when you've got a game again coming up tomorrow, and Steph Curry, I believe, won't play.
12:16And Steve Curry will either confirm or deny that coming up when we talk to him in moments.
12:21But I believe that if you go to Denver without Steph Curry, and you beat Denver here with Steph Curry, and Steph was amazing, and he hit the night-night shot and all the rest of it, and you had to go to overtime to beat Denver, you're probably in a little bit of trouble against Denver.
12:36No doubt.
12:36I look at the schedule upcoming, and you've got a six-game road trip, and Steph's not feeling great, and Jimmy's got a bad back, and Draymond couldn't play last night, and Guru was joking that it was a rib.
12:47Not ribs, but a rib.
12:49Whatever it was.
12:50It was nothing.
12:51It was an opportunity to sit him out.
12:53Whatever it was, you're looking at a schedule where you're going to have these guys sit a lot of games, and I don't have a tremendous amount of faith in them winning a lot of games without those three in the lineup.
13:02On Wednesday, November 19th, we might go to bed, and the Warriors might be under .500.
13:10That's real.
13:11That's real.
13:12They might be.
13:12They might be on Wednesday, November 12th.
13:15They might be.
13:15Well, yeah, but you're talking about the whole.
13:17In the 14th.
13:18I picked the 19th because that's the end of the road trip that you referenced, and yes, it's very hard.
13:24They will be a huge underdog tomorrow, and so let's say they lose that.
13:28They fall to 5-5.
13:29Then you look at those next seven games, a home game to Indiana, and that road trip, which takes you to OKC, San Antonio twice, Orlando, Miami.
13:37You've got a New Orleans there squeezed in between.
13:39Say hi to all the former Warriors there.
13:41But could they be under .500 after that?
13:44Sure, they could, but I don't think that that's any sort of a decisive look at who they're going to be come the end.
13:56This thing always kind of goes month to month, does it not?
14:00It does.
14:00I mean, we'll feel differently by the end of the holidays than we do now.
14:06This thing is still taking shape.
14:07But as we look at when they've been successful, they've banked wins early, and they haven't had a chase.
14:13Last year, you had to chase it, and you had to go seven with Houston, and then Jimmy got hurt, Steph got hurt, season over.
14:19So I think that the blueprint for an older team is to not have to chase it.
14:24It's to bank it early.
14:25The schedule does not allow you to bank it early, and that's why I look at last night.
14:30That's a game you should win.
14:31You would win if you had everybody.
14:33And the Indiana game, you had no business losing that.
14:36But Milwaukee without Giannis, you had no business losing that.
14:39So these are games that you should have banked, you didn't bank, and now you're already in a spot where, okay, you might be 5-5 after tomorrow.
14:46I'm not saying that you need to, like, go out and start making hay, but this is not the blueprint.
14:51That's all I'm saying.
14:52Yeah, but, I mean, again, there's a couple games.
14:54I've never experienced watching one of my favorite teams play and at the end of the year not feel like, dude, you blew a few.
15:01We feel that way every year with the Warriors.
15:03I'm not even discounting your point.
15:05I get it.
15:06Everything you just said, I accept.
15:08I guess what I'm saying is my first takeaway from watching last night is an excitement to the level of you see what Kaminga at least has the ability to do.
15:20You see what Moses Moody has the ability to do.
15:23That guy looks like a much better player.
15:25And we got 35 more minutes of getting to know what Will Richard can do.
15:30And I know that everybody was a little all over the place with their Brandon Pajemski review last night.
15:36Some people were like, God, he was terrible.
15:39And others were like, he was a rebound and assist away from a triple-double.
15:43So, like, that's just going to be the pods experience.
15:47A lot of people love him.
15:48A lot of people don't like him.
15:49Somewhere in between, whatever.
15:51But that's four players who went out there and really led the way in a game in a way where I think at least on an individual basis you can say, oh, I can sort of see a young core kind of coming together at least early stages for the Warriors.
16:08For me, that was takeaway one.
16:10I get that the loss was a bummer.
16:12Sure.
16:12For me, takeaway one is always the result.
16:14And, you know, your process, I'm a result.
16:16And the result was you lost.
16:18And you lost a game.
16:19You were up 11.
16:20And that's not great.
16:22And takeaway number two, and I said it before the year started, and nobody wants to hear about it because we love him.
16:28He's a veteran.
16:29You and I met watching him play in the Final Four.
16:32That's true.
16:33That's true.
16:34As a college player.
16:35Al Horford, he does not look like the Al Horford of three years ago.
16:39And if you want to look at his percentages year over year, Al Horford three years ago, wow, north of 40.
16:46Then north of 35, north of 30.
16:49And now, my God, Al, can you please do me a favor?
16:53I can call you Betty.
16:54Betty, when you call me, you can call me Al.
16:57Shout out Paul Simon.
16:58Stop shooting.
17:00Stop playing him.
17:01Stop shooting.
17:02Well, stop playing.
17:03He can't shoot.
17:04That's up to Steve.
17:05No, yes, he can.
17:07Oh, he's allowed to.
17:08Yeah, I mean, no, don't stop because you had a bad couple of nights.
17:13Yeah, like, I mean, that's Al Horford, again, he's also chipped in with seven rebounds.
17:19I mean, he's going to be out there.
17:21You need Al Horford to play some minutes.
17:23You need Al Horford to play.
17:24You don't have any other centers that have any defensive and rebounding experience.
17:29I'm not just handing this gig to Quentin Post and Trace Jackson Davis, are you?
17:34You're just going to hand him the gig and that's it?
17:36I mean, when Draymond's back, sure.
17:38I mean, you can have Al come in there and shoot and play a little bit, but three for 18 the last three games, four for 23.
17:45Yeah, he's been bad.
17:46He's been bad.
17:46Like, really bad.
17:47And if you watch him play, and I know you do, and I'm not going to imply that you don't watch every single dribble because you're a junkie
17:53and all you do is watch sports, but he looks like a cardboard cutout.
17:58He looks stiff.
17:59I had a different player.
18:00He looks stiff.
18:01Well, he's 39.
18:03He probably is.
18:04He's 39.
18:05Well, then you can't play him if he's out there like, I am a three-point shoot.
18:10I am a stretch five.
18:11He's always been an awkward looking.
18:13He looks even worse.
18:14He looks even stiffer.
18:16There was a different player last night who caught my eye and got a lot of my, like, what are you doings that I would yell from the couch.
18:22In a negative way.
18:23I love it.
18:23I love when you go negative.
18:24Well, this is a hard guy to come at in a negative way.
18:27Oh, boy.
18:27It's hard.
18:28I don't really want to do it.
18:29I don't enjoy this.
18:30I know where you're going.
18:32He's the little engine that could.
18:33Number 61 in your program, number one in your heart.
18:36Turns out he's the little engine that can't.
18:37Oh, shoot.
18:38I don't know.
18:39I'm a four right there.
18:40I don't know why Pat Spencer thinks that he can do the things that he thinks he can do.
18:46He's got the ha-ha.
18:47He can't do those things.
18:49It's like, dude, you're a good story.
18:51You're not supposed to start taking six, seven guys off the dribble and drive into the lane.
18:58It's a lot.
18:58And try to shimmy it up with the dude.
19:01Stop.
19:02Stop.
19:03Grab the ball.
19:04Pass the ball to the next guy.
19:05If the shot's wide open, shoot your shot.
19:08It's all you got.
19:09But Pat Spencer right now, for me, if we're going to see games like this, and I know we will,
19:14where he's going to have a role like this, you've got to get a better sense of your limitations.
19:20That would be my suggestion for Pat.
19:22I think they need to let Pat cook.
19:24No, you don't.
19:25Minus 19 in 17 minutes.
19:27Let Jack's cook.
19:28Because they can cook.
19:29No, it's...
19:29They're at Jack's Restaurant and Bar.
19:30The French tip was an 11 out of 10.
19:31It was.
19:32And I know we don't do plus minus in a small sample, but he was a minus 19.
19:37But watching the game, I thought that he was a minus 75.
19:40Because, I mean, and I love Pat.
19:42No one loves Pat more than me and maybe his brother and his family.
19:45I don't know them that well.
19:46But I want Pat to do well so badly.
19:49Don't know why.
19:50But watching him out there, it's like, oh my God, you look like a college lacrosse player.
19:54Yeah.
19:54I mean, he'll do things where you'll...
19:56Like, I get that he can do things that when you look at him, he shouldn't be able to do.
20:02But I also think you can't do what he thinks he can do.
20:06And that's my concern, is when you look at it, I'm like, Pat, there are half your plays
20:14where you look at him and the result is exactly what you think when you walk in the room.
20:19And when you walk in the room, Pat, you're like, that's not an NBA player.
20:22No.
20:22But he's got a jersey and shoes.
20:24So if he's going to have a jersey and shoes, he's got to know his limitations.
20:27Well, unfortunately, when you have a team that has no first stringers, or three of your guys are out,
20:32your third stringers become your second stringers.
20:34And that is Pat, and it's TJD, and it's...
20:38Hi, this is Guy Santos.
20:41All these guys are playing more than they actually should be playing because you don't have a first team.
20:46So your second team becomes your first team.
20:48Your third team becomes your second team.
20:50And you lose to the Adorables.
20:51And they light the beam right in your face.
20:53Yeah, yeah.
20:54You seem to enjoy it.
20:56What's with the Russell Westbrook and the Kings, and then you enjoy it?
20:59I like Russell Westbrook more than you hate him.
21:01Why do you enjoy it?
21:02Because he goes out there, and no matter what team he's on, which has been seven teams, the dude plays hard.
21:09You're supposed to be bothered when the beam gets lit, when the Warriors are in town.
21:12I'm bothered by the beam, but I love the way Russell Westbrook attacks the game of basketball.
21:17He plays basketball like it matters.
21:19Do you think that Draymond Green, if Draymond Green had that passion for the game, he would have played last night?
21:25Oh, stop.
21:25Don't say that.
21:26Facts.
21:27That's not facts.
21:28That's...
21:28Boy, you are in troll mode today.
