00:00Lindy Ruff, the fourth winningest coach in NHL history, who has taken a team that has
00:11missed the playoffs every year since 2011, at which time he was the coach, to a tie for
00:19first place in the Atlantic Division with nine days left in the season.
00:24Having beaten the team he's tied with, the easy favorite, at least among or between
00:31the two teams, if not the entire division, having taken seven points out of eight, is
00:36that the coach of the year?
00:37Is someone else?
00:39I mean, I'm biased.
00:43I mean, I felt like...
00:44And invested.
00:45That's how I'm biased, is I have a bet on it.
00:49And I tweeted this last night, lots of traction.
00:52Part of me thought, you know, probably you should say again here that you're betting
00:56on this.
00:56You have money on it.
00:57But I didn't really feel like that was any different than just rooting for it.
01:01Because I'm rooting for it for whatever reason I wanted to be rooting for.
01:03I was born here.
01:05I have money on it.
01:06What's the difference?
01:07Right.
01:07That's what I meant by...
01:08I'm biased and invested.
01:10Like, I'm a Sabre fan, so I want the Sabre coach to win coach of the year.
01:14And then I've got the bet on top of that.
01:16But honestly, if I'm in Minnesota, I don't think I want Lindy Ruff to win the Jack Adams
01:22because I think they look a little bit lucky in terms of the numbers.
01:25But I'm not.
01:27So who cares?
01:28Tough.
01:30Full disclosure.
01:31And who's supposed to win it?
01:33The guy that's coaching the team that has a dude that's got 130 points or whatever the
01:39hell Kutrup has got.
01:40He's one of the very best players in the world.
01:43And a top five goalie.
01:44Right.
01:45And who's calling for the guy opening and closing the penalty box door to be fired now.
01:52Dude, I've almost always sided with John Cooper.
01:55You're done with it, though.
01:56In everything.
01:58Maybe that guy should be fired.
02:00It's just...
02:01You can be upset that the door was opening.
02:04I don't know how much it impacted the injury.
02:07I mean, the guy was smashing into the wall awkwardly.
02:09I don't even know.
02:10The door might have even done them a favor.
02:12But whatever.
02:12The guy's hurt.
02:13So your guy's hurt.
02:14The door's opening.
02:16You know why the door's opening?
02:17The penalties are ending.
02:18So I don't know how...
02:20Playroom.
02:21Was it open too early?
02:22I just don't need a coach with the kind of...
02:26I don't know, like, the standing John Cooper has in the league to call for that guy to
02:33be in trouble.
02:34I don't know.
02:34It just seemed a little bit too much to me.
02:37I get it.
02:38But I think Lindy has been that guy in his career.
02:44Somebody that...
02:44Like, you know, when we were cooking and he was the coach, there were times when I thought...
02:49He was like, come on.
02:50Relax.
02:51Mm-hmm.
02:52You know?
02:52You don't have to...
02:53What would it have been?
02:55I mean, just players on other teams, officials.
02:59I thought he would be, like, sort of an eye roll at times, Lindy.
03:01Yeah.
03:02And that was too.
03:05Lindy might have grown out of it.
03:07You know...
03:09Or...
03:10Did...
03:11I was a little surprised he said what he said last night in post-game about...
03:17And I wonder if he, once he said it, thought, oh, I wish I wouldn't have volunteered that.
03:24He mentioned how he saw footage before the game of fans punching a Brandon Hagel doll
03:33or something.
03:33Like, the fans had had, like, a...
03:35You know, they were...
03:36They were going to kick Brandon Hagel.
03:38Whatever.
03:38They had a stuffed, you know...
03:40Wow.
03:41Likeness of Brandon Hagel.
03:42What a compliment.
03:43And...
03:43I mean, it is, right?
03:45It is.
03:45But to hear Ruff say that about the...
03:48I don't know.
03:49I just thought it was a little...
03:50It was a little odd that he, like, laughed about that.
03:53Because, you know...
03:56It doesn't need to do it.
03:57Yeah.
03:57I just...
03:57I didn't think it needed to be said.
04:00I guess that's what I mean.
04:01It's not the same thing as what Cooper did.
04:04I mean...
04:04But...
04:05And, you know...
04:06I'll tell you what...
04:06Because the Ruff thing is relatively harmless.
04:09But I could see the Lightning being like...
04:11He thinks it's funny that the...
04:13Whatever.
04:13This was a little weird to me.
04:15The Cooper thing is just out of line, I think.
04:18To, like, call for someone's job.
04:20I just...
04:21I didn't like that very much at all.
04:22I tweeted this last night.
04:24There were two or three things.
04:26I'm trying to think of it now.
04:27Tampa knows all the tricks.
04:31They should.
04:32They had the...
04:34Here's Perry, you know, running his stick blade across Sabre players' faces or almost.
04:39Because that's not going to be called.
04:41Right?
04:41Especially when you're Corey Perry or when you're the Lightning.
04:44Like, that's not going to be called.
04:45There was one where...
04:46I think it was Gensel or it was Radish.
04:49One of them...
04:50Rob pointed it out.
04:52They went to the bench after maybe a long sequence in their own end or an icing or something.
04:58And, like, pretended to have a conversation to give them a little bit more time.
05:02That might have been what happened there.
05:04That's what the Sabre broadcast alleged.
05:06And, like, oh, well, I guess you're not going to...
05:08At one point, the camera's at ice level and they're showing the lines.
05:12And we're like, come here to the Tampa guy.
05:14It's time to go, right?
05:15That's never going to be called.
05:18And here's Kucherov tripping over Tuck on purpose.
05:22There's no play.
05:24Imagine you're playing hockey and the guy nearest you has his back to you and his stick blade a little
05:30bit...
05:30Do you disagree with this?
05:31Are you giving me a face?
05:32I know.
05:33He has his stick blade off the ice.
05:34Kucherov steps into the stick and falls.
05:36What you're getting is I don't know what you're talking...
05:38I don't remember the play.
05:39The penalty on Tuck where Tuck was like, what?
05:42Did it negate the power play early?
05:44Is that the play?
05:45Because Tuck took a penalty late in a power play that negated a Sabre power play for tripping someone right
05:50in the slot, I thought.
05:51Anyway, sorry.
05:52I'm going to put the point here.
05:53Maybe Tuck has his back to Kucherov, is doing nothing.
06:00Kucherov approaches Tuck and, like, intentionally trips over Tuck's stick.
06:05Rob says, that's a penalty.
06:07Like, why is that a penalty?
06:09That's not tripping.
06:10Tuck can't believe it.
06:12And instead of going right to the official, he goes to Kucherov.
06:15Like, what happened?
06:17I didn't even know you were there.
06:19And Kucherov, like, is that going to hurt him?
06:21There's no play.
06:22The puck's on the wall across the zone.
06:24And he just goes up.
06:25They know all the tricks.
06:27And I tweeted last night, I think I'm jealous.
06:30Because in football, I think this is more of a football thing.
06:33I want to be the team that knows all the tricks.
06:35Whatever that is.
06:38Fakes.
06:39You know, analytics.
06:41I want to know all the tricks.
06:42And Tampa does.
06:43How to hold and get away with it.
06:44I hate them so much, but I love them.
06:47Like, they know all the moves.
06:49And they're going to be the team in the playoffs that gets the benefit of the doubt.
06:56And that's why the ref is over there laughing with their players.
06:59And that's why Kucherov knows to trip himself and make it obvious.
07:03So much so that the Sabre broadcaster says, oh, yep.
07:06Tuck doesn't even know he's there.
07:08Yeah.
07:08Tuck too.
07:09Yeah.
07:09I'm talking about the one in the first period.
07:11And that was a different play.
07:12He was holding the guy's stick.
07:14And the guy dropped his stick.
07:16And Tuck got caught.
07:16This one is in the second period.
07:18Second period.
07:19Yeah.
07:19Right.
07:19Okay.
07:20Are you watching that play?
07:21Anybody?
07:22You guys with me on this?
07:23Did you see this play last night?
07:25Kucherov?
07:26I'm not doing anything right now.
07:29Yeah.
07:29I'm just going to trip myself.
07:31And, oh!
07:34I mean, anybody?
07:37Who runs the league anymore?
07:38Campbell?
07:39That guy?
07:40Anybody?
07:40He used to listen to us.
07:42Is that guy listening?
07:42Is anybody in charge?
07:44I'm not.
07:44But, no.
07:45Wait.
07:45You know what?
07:45Never mind.
07:46Because now I'm just sort of a lunatic.
07:49To say any of this means I'm just paranoid and I'm wrong.
07:52We can't listen to Buffalo.
07:54We are all the way back now.
07:55I am very much back.
07:56Now we are all the way back.
07:57There's no way that's tripping.
08:00When you trip yourself on purpose.
08:03I wish I had noticed.
08:05I did.
08:05I did not remember.
08:07I need to know how you feel about this.
08:09Anybody?
08:10Am I right?
08:11Like, did you see?
08:12The camera is behind the play.
08:14You've got the back of Tuck's jersey and the back of Kucherov.
08:17And he skates up to him.
08:18Oh!
08:19In a circle.
08:19And if anybody out there knows the play that Mike is talking about and can find it easily,
08:24please send it to us.
08:25A hundred likes.
08:26Because I don't.
08:27That's not even good.
08:28I don't remember the play.
08:29A hundred likes is not even good.
08:30It's not enough.
08:31No.
08:31Okay.
08:32It's something.
08:33Maybe if we get the highlight, we'll get more than that.
08:35I know.
08:36But I never do that.
08:38Oh, I see.
08:39All right.
08:39Here's Tony with us.
08:40Hi, Tony.
08:41I'll do it.
08:42Because I do it all the time.
08:43Hi, Tony.
08:43I'm too lazy.
08:44You know who was notorious for doing that?
08:46And we used to just...
08:48I used to pull my hair out.
08:50Chris Neal used to do that with Ottawa.
08:52Is that right?
08:53And I could not stand this dude.
08:57He would trip himself?
08:59Well, he wouldn't just trip himself.
09:01But he would beat the Sabres up.
09:03But he would also pull a little shenanigans.
09:05You're like, what's going on with this dude?
09:07It's like he was just a master at it.
09:10You know what?
09:10That's right.
09:11We will always get a penalty.
09:12If you want to be dirty, fine.
09:15If you want to fake it, fine.
09:16You can't be both.
09:17I don't respect that.
09:18You can't be both.
09:19I can't respect it.
09:20Tampa's both.
09:20With his hockey.
09:23But, you know, there's a couple observations that I saw with this rough.
09:27This whole round was rough.
09:29The first seasons under rough, we were one of the worst passing teams.
09:36Do you guys remember that?
09:37Oh, yeah.
09:37They were terrible last year.
09:40Yeah, last year.
09:41Yeah.
09:42This year, and another thing with the – when he got hired with Dallas, I mean,
09:49that team, I was so envious of that team because I said,
09:52why couldn't rough play that type of style here when he was here?
09:56He wouldn't have never got fired.
09:58Well, he didn't have the defensemen to go jump down two defensemen at a time,
10:02and then the fours would cover.
10:04We had Jason Woolley, and we had Jay McKee.
10:09Who was the other guy?
10:11Campbell.
10:12Maybe those guys would do it.
10:13But the rest of the defense core we had, Killeen and all those guys,
10:17they would never do it.
10:18And I don't know if rough didn't want to play that.
10:20No, this is a very different – the position of playing as a defenseman
10:24has really evolved since the era you're even talking about.
10:29It's weird because it's the same coach, you know, for the same team.
10:32But this is a very different game.
10:35Like, right now, the best teams have got multiple defenders who can get below
10:42the goal line in the offensive zone and still get back and play the position.
10:47And that just was not how the sport was played.
10:50Even 15, 20 years ago.
10:51It's a very, very current thing in the league.
10:56Like, if you're going to be a top team, you've got to have guys that can play that way.
10:59Thanks, Tony.
11:00Derek is next.
11:01Hi, Derek.
11:02Hey, boys.
11:03How we doing this afternoon?
11:04Fantastic.
11:06So, I want to talk about Brady Kachuk getting fined for slashing off the bench
11:13and Corey Perry not even getting a call for slashing into the bench.
11:20Go ahead, then.
11:23So, I'm just confused how that's not a penalty when you blatantly stick your stick
11:30in three people's faces.
11:33It's not a penalty because it's almost never a penalty.
11:35Anything like that.
11:36A guy like this is the master at knowing where the line is.
11:41Early in a game.
11:42I didn't mean to do it.
11:43What happened after that thing last night where you have the Sabres on the bench,
11:47and I'm not even sure he got anybody.
11:49Right.
11:49That's how you avoid a penalty is you didn't hit anybody in the face.
11:53After that play, one of the officials has Perry, and they're face-to-face.
12:00And I'm sure the official is saying, like, you know, cut it out next time
12:04or something like that, right?
12:05And, you know, Perry's like, what do you mean?
12:07The next time you see him, he's literally leaving his feet to jump onto the scrum
12:12behind the Sabre net, after which the Sabres get the extra two and get scored on.
12:17Like, that's just a guy who knows how to play.
12:19That's a guy you want on your team.
12:22Which doesn't mean I can't hate him.
12:26Like, I'm just going to go home muttering his name today.
12:29Right.
12:30But I'm jealous.
12:30Like, I want that.
12:33And I think Benson is a version of that.
12:35But he's like 5'2".
12:37Right.
12:38So, I mean, I love Benson.
12:41He's my guy.
12:42He's everybody's guy right now, I think.
12:44Like, that guy, he's so interesting and fun.
12:47And I love that other teams can't handle him.
12:50Because he's so little.
12:51And just like, that's the best.
12:53But Perry, I mean, he's 40 years old.
12:55He's won.
12:56He might be a Hall of Famer.
12:58And that comes with, you get respect.
13:00And what do you mean I tried to cut their heads off?
13:03I didn't really try to cut their heads off.
13:05That's a you problem.
13:08Well, am I being a little dramatic?
13:10Yes.
13:12It's called for.
13:13I want him out of sports.
13:14I stopped.
13:15I did not even stop at hockey last night.
13:17I don't want him being allowed at kids games.
13:20Corey Perry?
13:20Yeah.
13:21Out.
13:21Out of everything.
13:22Out of society.
13:23Out.
13:24Somebody like that.
13:25You're going to be dirty.
13:26And you're going to complain.
13:27You can't be both.
13:29You cannot be both.
13:30You can be one or the other.
13:31You can be the guy that's always whining, but, you know, sometimes you're right.
13:36You can be dirty, but you've got to shut your mouth.
13:38You can't be both.
13:39There's nobody worse than the guy who's cheap and complaining.
13:44I didn't do it.
13:45He did it.
13:46He touched me.
13:49What are you looking at out here?
13:50I'm Corey Perry, man.
13:54Again, I'm excited.
13:56I'm excited.
13:56Mike Schopen, the Bulldog, at 803-0550.
13:59Sal at 4.
14:00This is WGR.
