00:26I mean, how great would you say the risk of miscalculation is?
00:30The risk of miscalculation has been very high since 1979, in fact,
00:34when the regime took our diplomats hostage in our embassy for 444 days.
00:41For any country, that is just a red line that should not be crossed.
00:48I certainly believed, as did other diplomats and military planners for years,
00:53that this war probably was going to happen,
00:56but that it was going to be as the result of an Iranian miscalculation of where our red lines are,
01:03especially since we do change presidents from time to time and they set different red lines at different times.
01:11And we almost saw this happen on several occasions.
01:14One that comes to mind is the 2011 attempted or planned assassination of the Saudi ambassador in Washington, D.C.,
01:23Adil al-Jubeir.
01:24Had that plot succeeded, the Iranians would have killed not just Adil al-Jubeir,
01:30but everyone else in the restaurant that they were targeting.
01:33And so that would have crossed a red line, I'm quite certain,
01:37and it would have elicited a strong American military response.
01:42They probably didn't realize that at the time, otherwise they wouldn't have gone through with the planning.
01:48But at this point, one thing that is actually quite predictable about the Iranian regime is that they're not giving
01:56up.
01:58The entire regime is based on this concept of resistance, resisting the United States,
02:04resisting economic development, resisting partnerships in the region that have brought unprecedented economic growth
02:14to the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and others.
