00:00Are you ready?
00:05My name is Travis Pastrana.
00:09This is my wife.
00:17This is where I came from.
00:26This is where I'm going.
00:34And this is my story.
00:52Building a custom bike, we end up getting something that's totally new.
00:55And it's hard to do that these days.
00:58Our aesthetic and our thought process breeds things that are new.
01:06From our background and our backbone of design, it means new things.
01:10It means ingenuity and it means progression for us.
01:15I run a company called RSD, which stands for Rural and Sands Design.
01:18Our primary function is building custom motorcycles.
01:21And from that, we have developed a line of motorcycle parts and motorcycle apparel.
01:28I started racing like on the racetrack when I was 19 years old.
01:31My dad was a pretty busy guy, so he didn't have a lot of time.
01:33So when I was 19, I could actually drive myself to the track and everything there.
01:36Moved into doing nationals and kind of just did the whole series in the United States.
01:44Everything I do is kind of preface with that race feel or with that race aesthetic and race function.
01:54Travis and Lindsay are coming in.
01:56I'm so stoked to be building a bike for Lindsay from Travis, which I just think is so cool, you
02:03know.
02:03I haven't really built a girl-specific bike, so they do one for Lindsay.
02:08It's kind of like extra special because she's not just your typical girl.
02:12What's up?
02:12How much? How much?
02:14Dude, this place is sick, man.
02:15It's good.
02:16It's good.
02:17It's sick.
02:17Hi, baby.
02:18What's up?
02:20Aw, thanks, man.
02:21I get a hug, too.
02:24We're actually right now on our way to the motorcycle graveyard.
02:27And it's a sad place.
02:28There's a lot of destroyed motorcycles, a lot of carcasses.
02:32It's like the starting point of what we want to do and how we're going to get there.
02:38Definitely some ghosts in here.
02:40Shoot.
02:42Is there?
02:45Oh, yeah.
02:48There we go.
02:49There's still gas in there.
02:50We're good.
02:50Just start her up.
02:51This thing's not even that bad.
02:53It's not that good.
02:53I think it's sweet.
02:55Dude.
02:56That's actually really good.
02:57Well, that's not all that awesome.
02:58Well, I mean, this guy's got some quirks, you know.
03:00A little character.
03:01Yeah, but I can work with that.
03:02Look.
03:04Yeah.
03:05It's like a left turn.
03:06Seriously.
03:07Because, well, Lindsay, you see, she always complains.
03:09That's really why we're here, because everything that we've done, I'm always like,
03:13hey, jump on the back.
03:13And she's not a pastor, so she falls asleep.
03:15She's like, yeah, it's great rest time.
03:16I give him my own bike, so.
03:17She's big in, like, purple plaid, like, kind of like her shirt or whatnot.
03:21Like, how, what even design, like, how are we going to build this thing?
03:25I want him to be, like, comfortable.
03:26I don't want to be stretching forward or up.
03:29Okay.
03:30Zook.
03:33I mean, it's a little hammered, but we can tie.
03:37This is, this is your, this is your, congratulations.
03:40You win.
03:40You just got a gas tank.
03:42Woo!
03:46Got that thing?
03:47I don't know.
03:48Well, if you drop it, it's okay.
03:50If we drop it, we're not going to really bust anything.
03:52You guys are doing great.
03:54Just, you know.
03:55Good job.
03:56Thanks for coming in today.
03:57Yeah, yeah.
03:57It's good.
03:58Ow.
04:02So we're back from the graveyard, and we're looking at a machine that's pretty hammered.
04:06I mean, it'll work, but it's going to take a lot of work to make it work.
04:15Yeah, I kind of was asking Travis about his experience with building bikes, and he just
04:18looked at me, and I'm like, I think I showed him a wrench, and he's like, what is that,
04:21a hammer?
04:28I think this motorcycle's going to be a lesson in simplicity for us.
04:30It's really about stripping off all the old stuff, and cleaning it all up, making things
04:35work better, lightening the bike up, and making it something that Lindsey's going
04:38to feel really comfortable on.
04:44We're going to get to build a really cool bike with Trav and Linz, and it's just exciting.
04:48It's going to be an exciting project.
05:22This is a really cool test out here at Nashville Super Speedway because there's so many great
05:27drivers in both Nationwide and Cup.
05:29You've got Locano.
05:30You've got Kurt Busch.
05:31Basically, we'll know exactly where we sit with this car.
05:34Matt just jumped in the first car, which is the Waltrip car, and he's about to jump in
05:37the RAB car.
05:38So this is really neat also because it's two different teams coming together, both testing
05:42whatever they think the best setup is for this track.
05:44And we'll know which one's better by being able to test both ends.
05:47So it's really, really awesome these guys are getting in behind me.
05:51All right, burning daylight.
05:54It's now noon, and we get to finally jump in these cars.
05:58He made so many improvements.
05:59Now we know what my baseline is.
06:01We've got all the computer data, so I'll be able to jump in these cars, and we'll know
06:04exactly where I'm letting off too soon, where I'm on the gas too hard, where our times are
06:07compared to someone that has proven that he can drive these cars.
06:10It's kind of scary.
06:11It's going to be really fast.
06:12What are your worries?
06:14My worries with him?
06:15Yeah.
06:15He'll try to flip it.
06:17He'll find a dirt bank somewhere and try to do a backflip or something crazy.
06:22I don't know.
06:22He's pretty serious, though.
06:24I think we're okay.
06:25This is one of the bigger tracks he's been on, I bet, isn't it?
06:27Yeah.
06:28What's he saying?
06:29He's scared.
06:30What's up, dude?
06:32Every single track that I've gone to, they've said this is the toughest track.
06:35So I'm struck.
06:36I don't believe you guys anymore.
06:38If you've got to hit your line, then you know how much you've got to arc it in there,
06:42and if you miss it by a foot, you miss the bottom.
06:46I mean, doctor said take a year off, but, I mean, he more said that just because if I
06:50get in a big crash, then we start back to square one.
06:54So he said, hey, look, you can drive.
06:57You can do everything that it takes to drive.
06:58Just try to hit a wall too hard for him.
07:20You should be picking up the throttle a little bit now.
07:25Now you should be wide open.
07:26Right down there.
07:29Letting it roll, letting it roll.
07:31Take the throttle right over here.
07:33Then you just slowly work at it.
07:34Just do what it takes.
07:36All you gotta do, you do it all in one swing.
07:37Just slowly pick it up.
07:40Think about it.
07:41Let everything cool back off and go do it again.
07:42You've always done better the second, third, fourth time out once you get this.
07:46Think about it.
07:50The closer you can be to the bottom, in the center of the corner, both ends, the better
07:54way around this place.
08:10It's really easy to hit your marks.
08:12And I was...
08:13That's the caster difference.
08:15Did you ever swing it?
08:17Swing it?
08:18Oh, wait.
08:18You said that car turns right when you got the gas?
08:20Yeah.
08:21That's that caster.
08:21Split the reverse split.
08:23That's reverse split out.
08:25You lost me in reverse.
08:28What are you talking about?
08:30We're talking technical talk here.
08:31Okay, sweet.
08:32We know what it is.
08:33I'll be over here.
08:33Different braking.
08:35Now he goes out.
08:36You gotta brake harder with yours, not as much with ours.
08:38It was something good that he did really well with adapting to.
08:42Are you going out in that thing?
08:43No, Joey's going out.
08:47I just want to see what this 09 car drives like and in case I ever race this thing someday.
08:51This is really cool to have Joey jump in the car.
08:54It gives us a gauge of where we are as drivers and where the car is as relation to the
08:59other
08:59cars.
09:00So, invaluable for him to do that.
09:02Really, really cool.
09:04No, not at all.
09:05I used to move the gas pedal forward since I was in there last.
09:08Do you feel like you moved the steering wheel a lot and it doesn't do nothing?
09:11I'm like doing this and I'm like, I'm not doing this.
09:13And I can't stop doing it.
09:15I think if you had a stiffer box, that would help some of it.
09:17And I think there's some more in your front end somewhere.
09:20All this information, what do you need different to go faster?
09:24I'm like, man, I have not even pushed the car hard enough to know and hit the right lines
09:28enough to know where we're going to make this car better.
09:30So, I definitely just have to learn how to drive these faster courses and help learn
09:34quick.
09:34So, if Lindsey was out here, I'd be in trouble.
09:37I mean, A, she would give me a hard time and B, she'd probably be faster than I am.
09:40So, yeah, it's the only problem with having a wife that's really quick.
09:43I never drove a dirt bike.
09:44And I know I'm not really good at it, but I'm sure it's a lot different than driving
09:48a race car.
09:49He's going to get used to it.
09:49It's going to take him a while.
09:50He needs to not get frustrated with himself like he seems like he always does.
09:54So, if he stays calm and gets used to it, he's got a day and a half here or whatever.
09:58So, he'll get it figured out.
09:59I think it's going to be awesome because it's going to bring motocross people and supercross
10:03and all the action stuff that he does.
10:05All those people, all his friends are going to be looking and fans are going to be looking at
10:09NASCAR and it's just kind of a different personality.
10:12On top of that, he's got a tremendous amount of talent.
10:14Just trying to figure out, this is the fastest track we were driven.
10:16First time in a nationwide car in a while.
10:18We actually turned a, you know, a faster time that last one than Matt.
10:21And, you know, Lugano didn't have much time in there.
10:23Obviously, he's a much better driver than I am and so is Matt.
10:25But, we had a better time than both of those guys, you know, after a whole day of trying.
10:28So, that's promising.
10:30At least we're on the pace.
10:32Pat myself on the back for now.
10:33It's a good first day in testing this thing and it's supercross.
10:36I'm headed to Charlotte to meet up with friends Andy Bell and Jimmy Johnson.
10:39Find out if I can get some tips on how to become a NASCAR champion.
10:46Yeah, I feel so good.
10:47I mean, with all the Waltrip guys and, you know, Matt Crafton, RAB, everyone's come together.
10:51It's just, I'm so happy Jimmy's coming today for that little extra, man, before Richmond.
10:54Dude, do you really think Jimmy Johnson's going to show up here and try and help a schlep like you
10:58win a NASCAR?
11:00He's always come through with his word, man. He'll be here.
11:02Dude, if I was Jimmy Johnson, I'd be on the golf course having some...
11:05So, you want to be a NASCAR driver?
11:07Anyone with enough time and money can be a NASCAR driver.
11:10I want to be a champion. Like you, Jimmy.
11:13And you, Bell?
11:15Well, I don't think anyone's going to give me the keys to a car again after what I did to
11:18Vickers Cup car in downtown Charlotte.
11:20So, I'm just here for support. And I really want to be a NASCAR fan.
11:24Alright, here's the thing. I'm willing to help, but you guys have to do everything I say.
11:29I'm in.
11:30Figures? Come on. Damn right. Damn right.
11:32That's right. Alright, so what's your biggest fear?
11:35Freezing to death.
11:37Drowning.
11:38I'm the perfect thing.
11:47Could it be any colder?
11:49Yeah, probably. Don't ask. I'm sure when we get on the water, it's going to be a lot colder.
11:53So, how far do we go before our bodies lock up? Because that's an actual, legitimate fear.
11:58Is that we're going to be tough and be like, oh, this is going to be great.
12:00And then we're going to cut two holes that are too far apart.
12:02And we're going to be high-fiving in the middle and both at the same time.
12:04We're going to go...
12:07My granddad did it. And my dad did it.
12:09So, it was something I had to check off the bucket list.
12:10High-five. Bear Grylls did it.
12:12Yeah, he went like...
12:14We're all over 14 feet.
12:15Now, I fear, with you, we're going to have to go a lot bigger and further and scarier.
12:21That's what she said.
12:22No, it's just pretty cool that we've come out here.
12:24I mean, the whole idea of this, this ice thing's been going for a couple years.
12:27And it actually got shut down by MTV.
12:29And then it got shut down by Nitro Circus on the movie.
12:33Liability.
12:33And they actually thought we might have heart attacks when we went in.
12:37We're seriously, we're like four days out from my first NASCAR race.
12:40I have one day off.
12:41So, I fly to Utah.
12:43And then I got to fly back to Charlotte tomorrow.
12:46And I'm blaming that man.
12:47Right there.
12:49Me?
12:49Hey, we got our safety advisor right here.
12:51Todd, he's a...
12:52You want a safety meeting?
12:52Safety meeting?
12:53It's done.
12:54All right.
12:56That was the whole meeting.
12:57That was our safety meeting.
12:59Dude, what?
13:00Ice?
13:00Did you realize I was petrified?
13:02I was like...
13:03I'm still like...
13:03I was scared.
13:04You look at...
13:05It's a deep, dark, frozen hole and it's like freezing over and it's cold.
13:09I hate the cold.
13:11All right, round two.
13:12This is it.
13:13We had to come to 10,500 feet here in Utah.
13:16Got a beautiful day.
13:18And we're going ice diving part two.
13:20It worked so well last time.
13:22But unfortunately, someone lost the footage.
13:24So, I loved it so much that I thought, what the hell, let's do it again.
13:28So, we got a big crew.
13:30We got lumberjacks, chiropractors, divers, and idiots.
13:39Gotta get ready.
13:40We got one.
14:183.20 in the afternoon, it was a beautiful day all day long, we've just been going from
14:22lake to lake and every lake is shallow.
14:25We go through the ice and it's literally like six inches deep so we should just keep going
14:28as much as we can with everything we've got, because the second that sun drops below and
14:32I said it like a thousand times, but then we're going to really freeze, because then
14:35we've got to go soaking wet 10 miles back to base camp on snowmobiles.
14:52That might be through.
14:55Trap, where's your plumb line?
14:58Please, cross your fingers.
14:59Yes!
15:00Alright!
15:01Yeah!
15:02It looks like we've got about seven feet of ice here that we've got to figure out how to
15:06dig through the next two hours before we lose sun in two different holes.
15:11Which means also that we've got to go under seven feet and then figure out how to get the
15:14seven foot piece of ice pushed all the way under everything else.
15:18Oh God.
15:19This is stressful.
15:20It's ten to four.
15:22We don't have one whole dog.
15:24Wow.
15:25I don't know.
15:26I think we might have just flooded our chainsaw just under water.
15:41I think we've been in the water for the last 20 minutes.
15:43That is how deep the ice is here.
15:45It's ridiculous.
15:48There you go.
16:06That's it.
16:07Yeah.
16:08That's it.
16:11Wow.
16:13That's it.
16:14We do it.
16:15We got it, we got it!
16:16Thank you so much.
16:18Hold your feet and action.
16:23Oh, this sucks.
16:24Ah, you almost cut my leg off.
16:25How are you, dude?
16:26Can you feel them?
16:27I can't feel them.
16:27I can't feel yours.
16:28No.
16:29I don't know, man.
16:32You're good.
16:33Woo-hoo!
16:35Down it.
16:36That wasn't.
16:37All right, that's all my life.
16:40This is it.
16:41Game time.
16:41Again.
16:44It's like 5.30 at night.
16:45We have three minutes of sunlight left.
16:47We got a filler for Jimmy.
16:49He's never going to believe us.
16:50I know it's in about 35, 45 seconds.
16:52Someone wants to come get me.
16:53All right, you ready?
16:55You ready?
16:56We're ready.
17:25We're ready.
17:28We're going over.
17:29Cold.
17:32I can't feel it.
17:34The cold was worse than the drowning.
17:37The cold was worse than the drowning.
17:38The cold was worse than drowning.
17:38Hey, good job, buddy.
17:40We still got three more steps.
17:58I couldn't have made another 40 feet this time. I was in trouble. When we passed, I didn't even look
18:04at you.
18:04When you hit the water, everything contracts, and you go, and then you have nothing, and you're like,
18:09okay, I got 30 more seconds to swim, and I went, one, two, and I flipped up my back, and
18:14I was doing this, and I looked over, and Bell's doing the same thing.
18:17I was like, ah, rope, rope, rope, rope, rope, rope, rope.
18:20Oh, it was awesome. It was really awesome.
18:22I can't feel anything.
18:24By the way, everyone watching this camera right here, the guy above you, he's the one that made us do
18:31this twice.
18:31You got to jump in in your bikini.
18:33Yeah, you may as well get dressed.
18:52He takes his punishment like a man, even though he was wearing a women's Brazilian bottom.
19:05Hot guy. I'll tell you what. Here's your proof. We did it.
19:10Careful.
19:11Careful? After you just sent us to almost die swimming under the ice?
19:15Come on, Bell. I'm just trying to see how committed you guys are.
19:18The fact that we even came back to you is grounds for us being committed.
19:21What's next, mullet man?
19:23Ah, well, it's funny you say that.
19:25Step two. Motivational haircut.
19:35You guys like your haircuts?
19:36No. No.
19:38Come on.
19:39Well, actually...
19:40That's a good thing.
19:41Because these are motivational haircuts, and you can't cut your hair until this guy went to NASCAR race.
19:47Well, that's not so bad. How long did it take before you won your first NASCAR race?
19:51I think I was 25, so 25 years of racing.
19:54Five years.
19:55Ah, buddy, this fan has got an expiration date.
19:58Well, what about K&N series?
19:59Well, dude, you can't even win that, so who cares?
20:03Take your shirts off. Head outside.
20:06So, step three. Travis, slap belt.
20:09Wait, how hard?
20:10Kinda like that.
20:12That works.
20:13Yeah, step up.
20:18Alright, alright.
20:20Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
20:21What kind of thing will get you behind the suspension?
20:24Hey, look. Dolly Parton.
20:28What was that for?
20:30What was what for?
20:31Where did Dolly Parton go?
20:33Oh, there's no Dolly Dum Dum.
20:36Oh, so you're saying you have to hold your anger until you can retaliate without getting caught.
20:42Did I say that?
20:44No, but you...
20:46Very good. Moving on.
20:51Congratulations. You guys have made it to the victory celebration.
20:54Now, in this cooler, there's an assortment of beverages.
20:56But choose wisely, because your decision will define you.
21:00I happen to put a few beverages in there that might profile you, if you know what I mean.
21:03Get after it, boys.
21:27Oh, yeah!
21:31Woo!
21:32Woo!
21:34Yeah!
21:35Woo!
21:39Yeah!
21:40That's it.
21:41You guys are crazy, man.
21:43I just wanted to see if you action sports guys were as nuts and as crazy as you look on
21:47TV.
21:48By the way, I think you guys passed the test.
21:49I mean, you know there's no shortcuts to being a champion.
21:52Um, so with all that said...
21:56You know what, Chad?
21:57Don't even worry about it.
21:58I'm motivated.
21:59I'm a fan now, and I think you can do this.
