00:00:00Marco Antonio Barrera. So, Larry Merchant, let's turn our attention now to Barrera as he gets ready to enter the ring for his moment on the stage tonight.
00:00:09Julio Cesar Chavez fading now in the late stages of his career.
00:00:15Chiquita Gonzalez retiring, as we saw here tonight.
00:00:18Miguel Angel Gonzalez getting ready to go in against De La Hoya in a couple of months here.
00:00:23Does Marco Antonio Barrera rank at this moment as the number one fighter from south of the border in Mexico?
00:00:28I think everybody agrees to that.
00:00:32I remember that before the fight with McKinney, I ran into Dustin Hoffman at ringside, and I said to him to tell his son, who was seeing his first fight, that he might be looking at a great fighter tonight.
00:00:45Later, after the fight, we found out that Julio Cesar Chavez, during the fight, had leaned over to Barrera's mother and said,
00:00:54tell Marco Antonio he's a great fighter.
00:00:58In my mind, that was Chavez passing the torch to Barrera, because Barrera, after all, looks like a pocket-sized version of Chavez, the Chavez we saw five, eight, and ten years ago.
00:01:12So, all he needs now to become a hero, however, like Chavez, is to fight a few more fights like the one against McKinney, and hopefully down the road we're going to see that.
00:01:24All right, and parenthetically, now let's clear up a statistical oddity here, because I just got the right information in my ear.
00:01:31The last score was incorrectly read by the ring announcer.
00:01:34It was really 98-92, not 93-92.
00:01:37That makes some sense.
00:01:39So McKinney was not as close to losing the bout as we had judged him to be.
00:01:43But you make all the good points about Barrera.
00:01:45Roy Jones lets you and I talk about Marco Antonio, and you saw there what can happen to a fighter just seven and a half months after being in a great 12-round war, as McKinney was against Barrera.
00:01:56It's our judgment that maybe Barrera's people aren't tremendously excited about rushing their fighter back into another battle with Kennedy McKinney.
00:02:04Maybe they want to shelter him at age 22 from another debilitating war.
00:02:09Good move on their part?
00:02:11Yeah, I think this is a very good move on their part.
00:02:13I don't think they so much as want to shelter him, but I think they want to make sure that they build the fight up, make sure that he gets the most money for his problem, for his performances.
00:02:23Make sure he goes out, does what he's supposed to do.
00:02:25He knows it's going to be a great fight against McKinney, but he wants to make sure that everybody knows that it's going to be a great fight and that it's projected that way to the public.
00:02:34Of course, the problem with that process is that you lose money if the opponent does something that doesn't help the promotion out.
00:02:39Do you think that Barrera and McKinney just lost a little money because of Kennedy's relatively ordinary performance in the preceding bout?
00:02:46No, I don't think so.
00:02:47Most of these fans here come here to see Barrera anyway.
00:02:50They know that McKinney is not going to fight this way against Barrera.
00:02:53Kennedy McKinney just dominated an opponent basically, outboxed him, but the judges didn't think that he did it the way he should have done it.
00:03:00So, you know, they were kind of hard on him.
00:03:02But the fans know what's going to happen when they show up together.
00:03:05All right.
00:03:06Let's take a look at the tale of the tape now between Marco Antonio Barrera and his opponent, Jesse Magana, who comes from Hanford, California, in the San Joaquin Valley.
00:03:16And you can see that they are just about equal as physical specimens.
00:03:20Barrera with a three-inch reach advantage, half-inch edge in height.
00:03:26And both of them weighed in at the title weight limit of 122 pounds.
00:03:34Rules of the bout of 122 pounds.
00:03:38Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
00:03:41The Marco Antonio Barrera-Jesse Magana fight is scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:03:46There is no standing eight count.
00:03:48The three-knock-down rule is in effect.
00:03:50Only the referee can stop the fight.
00:03:52And he can be saved by the belt in the 12th and final round only.
00:03:56Jim.
00:03:57All right, Harold.
00:03:58So now let's bring you the entrances of both fighters.
00:04:01And before this particular audience in the forum, the Mexican-American star, Magana, and the Mexican heritage fighter, Barrera, will both get enthusiastic receptions.
00:04:17I don't think that's what they're cheering about, Jim.
00:04:21Oh, I know.
00:04:23Well, I'll give you all four names just to show you how much research we've done.
00:04:26And there's Tanya Crowley.
00:04:28She sings with her sisters in a group called the Crowley Sisters.
00:04:32And she's from down in San Diego.
00:04:34Tanya is 24 years old.
00:04:37And she's an actress.
00:04:40The Crowley Sisters group, they sing rhythm and blues.
00:04:43Now here comes Magana.
00:04:44You didn't get a close-up look at Daphne Harris or Marissa Menon, but they were both in the ring as well.
00:04:54And here comes Jesse Magana.
00:04:56Magana's stepfather told me that he was going to shock the world tonight.
00:05:04Well, he's very confident.
00:05:06An aggressive, straightforward fighter.
00:05:09He says that he believes Barrera, against tough opponents, tends to lose control a little bit, drop his hands, and allow himself to absorb more punishment than he should.
00:05:22Magana got off to a slow start in the sport.
00:05:25At one point, he had a record of 4-3.
00:05:28But as you can see, he's come forward to make it 18-4-2 with eight KOs.
00:05:34I don't think he's going to be very odd by this situation.
00:05:39This is a kid who worked picking fruit from the age of 7 years old, went on to graduate high school, told us a story of him and two buddies in high school being surrounded by 10 men with knives and baseball bats and fighting his way out of it.
00:05:56He's getting paid to do this, and there's just one guy he has to fight tonight.
00:06:02Charming, magnetic, high-energy young man, Jesse Magana, 23 years old, born in Mexico.
00:06:10His mother moved the family to the San Joaquin Valley to seek greater economic opportunity.
00:06:14And as Larry told you, when he arrived at age 7, he went right to work in the fields picking fruit.
00:06:19Now, here comes Marco Antonio Barrera, who is from an upper-middle-class family in Mexico City.
00:06:26He has a rare origin in the sport of boxing because he does this not out of economic deprivation, but because he likes it.
00:06:33And I think these guys make better fighters.
00:06:40Well, you do it because you like it.
00:06:42You certainly didn't have to box.
00:06:44No, I didn't.
00:06:45And when you do it because you like it, that true love comes out every time that you perform.
00:06:49Well, you're right, Roy.
00:06:50No matter how poor the circumstance you came from, you've got to love it to do it because it's too hard otherwise.
00:07:02Spectacular record, 42 wins, no losses, no draws, 30 KOs for Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:07:13He's been busy since the McKinney fight with knockout wins over Jesse Benavides and Orlando Fernandez.
00:07:20And now, let's go to Michael Buffer for the intros.

00:09:37His professional record,
00:09:38a perfect one.

00:09:44and he is recognized
00:09:45as one of the best fighters in the world today.
00:09:49Ladies and gentlemen,
00:09:51Tomasi Caballeros,
00:09:52presenting
00:09:53the undefeated WBO
00:09:55Junior Featherweight
00:09:58Champion of the World,
00:10:00Marco Antonio Barrera!
00:10:04Pedro Barrera!
00:10:08Okay, I gave you instructions in the dressing room.
00:10:18The only thing I'm going to tell you now
00:10:19is when I tell you to stop,
00:10:20you stop whatever you're doing, okay?
00:10:22I tell you to break,
00:10:23I want you to break and break clean.
00:10:24Protect yourselves at all times.
00:10:26Listen to my commands and obey them at all times.
00:10:28Let's do it.
00:10:28As young as Barrera is, guys,
00:10:34I don't think he's capable of
00:10:36just putting his body out there.
00:10:39He's body and soul every single fight.
00:10:42It's what makes him the fighter he is.
00:10:49Well, when he stepped up
00:10:52in his first performance
00:10:53following the McKinney fight,
00:10:54a lot of people are watching closely
00:10:55to see what damage may have been done.
00:10:57It was exactly three months
00:10:59and one day later,
00:11:01and he was sensational
00:11:02in knocking out Jesse Benavidez,
00:11:04quality Southpaw veteran,
00:11:06in the third round in Anaheim.
00:11:08They touch gloves at the center of the ring.
00:11:13The nickname for Jesse Magana on his trunks
00:11:16is Cuervo, not the tequila, the bird.
00:11:20It means crow in Spanish.
00:11:23And he says his friends call him the crow
00:11:26because his legs are so skinny.
00:11:29Hard to tell because of the length
00:11:32and the generosity of those black sequined trunks.
00:11:36I hope he doesn't trip over them.
00:11:38He's fired.
00:11:41Hard right hand inside by Barrera,
00:11:43and at the opening outset,
00:11:46he stuns Magana.
00:11:48Magana is sort of straight up.
00:11:50He's backing straight back almost,
00:11:52and he's going to run into
00:11:53a lot of Barrera's overhand right tonight.
00:11:56Just like that.
00:11:57He thinks Barrera has trouble with Southpaws.
00:11:59There is no empirical evidence on the record
00:12:01to support that.
00:12:02One of the first things you notice about Roy
00:12:13is how relaxed he is in the ring.
00:12:15Yeah, Barrera always is so relaxed.
00:12:18He shows no facial expressions.
00:12:21His body's always loose.
00:12:24His reflexes are sharp.
00:12:25When an opening is there,
00:12:26he releases punches.
00:12:29We've seen him land two hard right crosses already
00:12:32in the first minute of the first round.
00:12:35Oh, there was a good left hand by Magana.
00:12:36Yeah, straight left hand by Jesse Magana,
00:12:38who led with it rather than trying to set it up with the jab.
00:12:41Well, they always say,
00:12:52fire your right-hand lead against a Southpaw.
00:12:54The opposite side of that coin
00:12:55is the Southpaw coming with his left-hand lead.
00:12:58But Barrera gets the better of the Tototo state.
00:13:02Crown rises.
00:13:03Magana backs up.
00:13:06A minute to go in round one.
00:13:08Marco Antonio stalking a knockout.
00:13:11A lot of this is happening
00:13:20because Magana's head is straight off.
00:13:33Just not enough head movement
00:13:35against an accurate puncher like Barrera.
00:13:37That's right.
00:13:37It's much easier to hit a still target.
00:13:41He ducked under those last two right hands.
00:13:46Let's see if he's gone to school
00:13:47and learned something that he can use in this fight.
00:13:54Magana much steadier in the last 45 seconds of the round
00:13:58after he ate a lot of leather from Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:14:03And he shows no fear.
00:14:07And...
00:14:08Barrera nods to his young opponent
00:14:13as if to say, good work, kid.
00:14:16And our interpreter in both corners is Ray Torres.
00:14:24All right, very intelligent, intelligent man.
00:14:26You didn't get cut.
00:14:27Everything's okay.
00:14:29You need to box with intelligence.
00:14:31We have to be married.
00:14:32No, we have to be married.
00:14:32No, we have to be married.
00:14:32Make him miss and then count him.
00:14:34We have to go on one count.
00:14:40You need...
00:14:41Jesse, you need to count to count him.
00:14:43You need to go inside and count to him.
00:14:47Don't throw the uppercut.
00:14:48Here they go at it at the end of the round
00:14:54as Magana makes his statement
00:14:56that he's going to stay a while.
00:15:04Well, it was very close to being
00:15:06Magana for Magana.
00:15:09But he lives to fight another round.
00:15:13Marco Antonio Barrera in round one
00:15:15punched at numbers.
00:15:1672 attempted, 40 landed.
00:15:27The one thing I like about Barrera so much
00:15:29is that he's so economical.
00:15:39That was a good left hand by Magana.
00:15:46He's got to land a lot of punches
00:15:48to get to Barrera.
00:15:49One thing he showed against McKinney
00:15:51is he's got a pretty good chin,
00:15:52although he was down in the bout.
00:15:54Barrera working to the body now here
00:15:56early in the second round
00:15:57after doing most of the damage upstairs
00:15:59in round one.
00:16:01This is to get Magana to drop his hand some
00:16:04so that Barrera can start to land
00:16:05the overhand right.
00:16:06and he's got to land more
00:16:28and they're just walking.
00:16:29Kennedy McKinney after 12 rounds quite an authority on Marco Antonio Barrera's punching
00:16:45power said he doesn't have that kind of lights out explosive one punch punching power that
00:16:50you see in some dangerous fighters but he hurts you because he commits to every punch
00:16:56the net effect is heavy hands that's right all this person have about the same power
00:17:01and comes back off the ropes
00:17:06Magana nodding at Barrera as if to say yeah you've got stuff
00:17:13but I can take it you know you mentioned the word commitment that's what makes great fighters
00:17:21because you can't drive a car from the back seat you've got to be right up there
00:17:26with your foot on them on the pedal yeah and Barrera's as willing as they go
00:17:31he's such a quiet kid Barrera and when you talk to him outside the ring
00:17:52it's hard to gauge his arrogance but you see it when he fights very much so
00:17:57superb defense by Barrera
00:18:07all right Jesse you gotta breathe deeply don't stand still that's why he's hitting you down
00:18:14you need to move around you got to move around you got to listen to me Jesse you have to move
00:18:31don't stay on the ropes you need to move around you can't
00:18:36another thing you got to feint him when you make a miss then you get
00:18:41good right hand underneath as you saw by Barrera followed by a good left underneath
00:18:58it takes he'll take what you give him and he'll take what you don't want to give him
00:19:03at the end of round two you talk to us about Barrera's defense Roy set it up again his defense is so well
00:19:12illustrated here that he stands right in front of this guy blocks everything the guy throws at him for about at least a 30 second
00:19:19time right there that is very very very confident taking from another guy
00:19:24McGullion now realizes why
00:19:39is the champion I guarantee you
00:19:42Barrera's head is fairly stationary when he stands and examines you and get ready
00:19:46to punch but he can roll with punches
00:19:48stationary when he stands and examines you and gets ready to punch, but he can
00:19:51roll with punches. He's got the rolling shoulders. Just as he did right there.
00:19:55That's an excellent right by the shot.
00:20:19If you're Kennedy McKinney and you're focusing on that rematch somewhere down the road, do
00:20:32you want to come sit ringside and watch this, Roy, or is it better to ignore it?
00:20:36You best to ignore it. He's had a better seat than ringside to see Barrera. You may see
00:20:43something that you don't want to see if you come here and watch it.
00:20:46The guy is showing a good chin. He's taken some heavy artillery from Barrera and continues
00:20:51to throw back, not landing with the same degree of accuracy as the young Mexican star, because
00:20:58Barrera, as we told you, is at age 22, one of the most accurate punchers in the sport.
00:21:02What a vintage period for boxing, below the heavyweight division. You have at 168 pounds,
00:21:16Roy Jones, seated next to me, as gift of a fighter who's ever lived. Delahoy at 140, headed ultimately
00:21:22for 147. And Marco Antonio Barrera at 122 pounds. Those are three glorious stars.
00:21:29And Trinidad and Corte ain't bad either. Well said.
00:21:38Barrera with the right-hand lead.
00:21:49Magana has a very big heart. He doesn't care what happens. He's still in there. He wants
00:21:54Barrera to recognize his presence. Now, Magana is not the kind of guy you're going to start
00:22:01with one punch. You've got to bust him up gradually. That's what Barrera will do.
00:22:06You need to take a step back, make and miss.
00:22:29You've got to keep working those uppercuts. They're working very well. Keep doing that.
00:22:33If you need to... You've got to keep going with those uppercuts.
00:22:45You need to breathe well. Keep breathing well. You need to be throwing that left hand.
00:22:51Make sure you throw those combinations, left, right, and the uppercut.
00:23:00What you saw in Barrera's corner was the need for a trainer to talk to a fighter who's fighting
00:23:06an almost perfect fight. What can you tell him?
00:23:10Nothing.
00:23:11Do what you're doing.
00:23:12Three rounds in the books.
00:23:19Scheduled 12 junior featherweight title fight between the title holder, Marco Antonio Barrera
00:23:25on the white trunks, and the challenger, Jesse Magana, in the black. Harold Letterman, as
00:23:29you see, scoring each of the first three rounds for the champion.
00:23:33I hate to tell you this, guys, but somewhere up there in the stands, there are some people
00:23:38fighting.
00:23:40Well, I thought we were past that. They're missing some good action in the ring.
00:23:51Barrera is jabbing, then he's fainting at Magana, making him commit, and then he attacks
00:23:56him with these big punches.
00:23:57Another look at Barrera's defensive skills there, as Magana launched four or five power
00:24:10shots in a row, and Barrera casually ducked him.
00:24:13Then he throws some excellent counterpunches when Magana misses with the big punches.
00:24:18Pick him up. Pick him up. Pick him up. Pick him up. Pick him up. Pick him up. Let's go.
00:24:21Barrera, who's been known to deliver low blows, he was worn for it in the McKinney fight, and
00:24:25Kenny mentioned yesterday to us that one thing he would be careful to do in their rematch
00:24:29is to hit Barrera low when Barrera gets below his board.
00:24:34One thing Barrera is doing here that I love to see in a right-hander is when you fight
00:24:38at Southpaw, they are so adjusted to you throwing the straight right until you have to start
00:24:42looping the right a little, and Barrera is making that adjustment like a professional.
00:24:49Boy, there are a lot of people who think that the way to fight at Southpaw is with your
00:24:53with your own left, rather than those inviting right hands like that.
00:24:58Oganya landed a left hand. Keep going.
00:25:02The reason you really don't fight him with your own left is because every time you miss
00:25:06him with your left, he can hit you with his right, because he's right on top of your left.
00:25:12What's your best performance ever against a Southpaw, Roy?
00:25:14Antoine Byrd. Made him make one mistake, then I rushed him.
00:25:17Did you loop that right hand a little bit to get at him?
00:25:19Yes, I did. You have to.
00:25:24That was a first-round knockout in your hometown of Pensacola, Florida.
00:25:33One thing with McGonaghan here, if he were to throw more looping left hands at Barrera,
00:25:38it would work the same way.
00:25:40But he's only throwing a straight right.
00:25:41That's why Barrera can block it so easy.
00:25:43McGonaghan had some success about a minute ago, and he was able to pull Barrera against
00:25:53the ropes. Now, Barrera lures it back in.
00:25:56That was a good straight left by McGonaghan.
00:25:58Sneaked it between Barrera's guard.
00:26:02McGonaghan does better when he comes straight up the middle against Barrera, as he did right there.
00:26:06A little trickle of blood around the right nostril of Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:26:21Arrow Letterman, four rounds.
00:26:24Larry, 40 to 36, four rounds to nothing, the baby-faced assassin, Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:26:31I think Barrera's killing him with those body shots.
00:26:34To me, the secret to this fight is that Jesse McGonaghan is making one big fatal mistake.
00:26:39He's standing right in front of Barrera.
00:26:41He continues to stand in front of Barrera, even though his corner tells him to move.
00:26:44You can't beat Marco, just stand there.
00:26:46Bob has the second coming of a big tiger.
00:26:48Flat-footed, a vicious hook, every punch a power punch.
00:26:51Make sure you have the lateral movement.
00:26:57Don't stand there in front.
00:27:02Harold reaching back more than three decades for the Dick Tiger analogy.
00:27:08And crossing the vast Atlantic Ocean to get all the way from Mexico to Nigeria for that one.
00:27:15Very good, Harold.
00:27:21Round five of the Schedule 12 between Marco Antonio Barrera and the white.
00:27:38And the game, Jesse McGonaghan.
00:27:43And wearable, the crow.
00:27:45If he could block some of Barrera's punches, this would be a very good fight.
00:27:55But if he continues to get hit as much as he is,
00:27:58Barrera's punches are going to sort of start to show.
00:28:02Like that.
00:28:03That time, McGonaghan, able to get his left glove in the way of Barrera's right hand.
00:28:15That right hook is working McGonaghan so much until he doesn't know what to do about it.
00:28:23Barrera's a well-schooled professional fighter.
00:28:25Terrific, bloodthirsty combination, mixing the body and the hand.
00:28:37Just terrific stuff from Barrera.
00:28:39Yes, it is.
00:28:40I don't think McGonaghan should stay in this corner because Barrera can trap him up here.
00:28:44Another thing Barrera does is he jabs, he steps to the outside,
00:28:47then he can shoot the right hook or he can throw the straight right,
00:28:50whichever one he sees when he steps out there.
00:28:52Barrera, for his part, says his strategy against the southpaw
00:28:57is simply to keep stepping to the right and digging the right hand of the body.
00:29:02He steps to the right to cut him off.
00:29:04There again, he steps to the left and landed the right hook.
00:29:06It'll land all day.
00:29:15Swelling on the bridge of McGonaghan's nose up close to his eyes.
00:29:22One other thing that my father always taught me was to back a southpaw up.
00:29:27Here, Barrera keeps backing McGonaghan up, and he's wearing him out like this.
00:29:30Why back a southpaw up as opposed to a conventional fighter?
00:29:33They're not used to it?
00:29:34They're not used to backing up, and they can't operate as well.
00:29:37Once you get inside of their hands, they can't operate as well if they're backing up.
00:29:41So southpaws are accustomed to being the aggressor
00:29:43because conventional fighters so often have difficulty facing guys from that southpaw.
00:29:48Right.
00:29:52Well, you can see that McGonaghan is accustomed to being the aggressor,
00:29:55as he told us he would be in this fight.
00:29:56Yeah, but he wasn't being the aggressor, and that's why Barrera is beating him so bad.
00:30:00It's awfully tough to be the aggressor when you're getting hit this hard this often.
00:30:03A night at the office for 22-year-old Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:30:26Marco, you're doing well.
00:30:28Just keep it up.
00:30:31Don't try to knock him out.
00:30:33Don't get over-entry.
00:30:37You're doing well.
00:30:38You're winning the fight.
00:30:41Everything is okay, Marco.
00:30:47Be careful with the uppercuts.
00:30:49He's landing with those shots.
00:30:53Let's go.
00:30:54This is the sixth round.
00:30:55We've got to get going.
00:30:56Is that the right advice for Barrera?
00:31:06Don't try to knock him out.
00:31:09That is great advice because in this,
00:31:11they mean don't over-commit with the big punches too much.
00:31:14If you over-commit, that's the best time for a man to hit you.
00:31:16They're just saying, let it happen.
00:31:19If it happens, great.
00:31:20The letterman scorecard proceeds according to form.
00:31:34Barrera 10, Magana 9.
00:31:36Barrera 10, Magana 9.
00:31:37Barrera 10, Magana 9, and so forth.
00:31:39If you're going to win a round from Barrera,
00:31:59you're going to have to earn it.
00:32:00Who's not going to give it to you?
00:32:01It takes the kind of spirited effort
00:32:08that Kennedy McKinney was able to put forward McKinney,
00:32:10a much more skilled fighter than Magana.
00:32:13Oh, there's another great left hook.
00:32:16The reason Magana keeps getting hit so much
00:32:17with these left hooks is because
00:32:19his right hand is down on his trunk.
00:32:21Remember earlier, Roy, I said a lot of people
00:32:24think it's the left hook, the left hand,
00:32:26that does better against the southpaw
00:32:28than that inviting opening for a right
00:32:30or a seeming unwinding opening.
00:32:33Well, it certainly can do well
00:32:35if, as Roy points out,
00:32:37the left-handed fighter is keeping his right hand
00:32:40pinned to his trunks like that.
00:32:42Yes, he can.
00:32:43How does he expect to defend himself
00:32:44against a left hooker like Barrera
00:32:45with his hand down like that?
00:32:47I don't understand it.
00:32:50Barrera doesn't even have to jab
00:32:51to get in against this.
00:32:53He can just fire power shots
00:32:55as he does there.
00:32:58As you know, though,
00:32:59he leads with the right hand
00:33:00more than he does the hook
00:33:01because if he misses with the hook,
00:33:03McGonaghy can counter him with a hook.
00:33:05And if he goes with the right hand of the body,
00:33:07he's perfectly set up to come back
00:33:08with the hook upstairs.
00:33:10A much more effective push spin.
00:33:13Oh, Barrera turns southpaw.
00:33:15I don't believe it.
00:33:15Just for a moment.
00:33:20Just a tease.
00:33:21A brief moment.
00:33:23McGonaghy's getting weak.
00:33:24Yeah, he's starting to get worn down.
00:33:27This gets discouraging after a while, I'm sure.
00:33:29And he's bleeding from the ridge of the nose now.
00:33:31Well, I told you that Barrera would bust him up
00:33:36gradually over a period of time.
00:33:41There's that right hook again.
00:33:45He got a feel for Jesse Magana,
00:33:47terrific young man,
00:33:48getting the biggest paycheck of his career tonight.
00:33:50It has every potential to be the biggest paycheck
00:33:53he'll ever get in the sport of boxing.
00:33:55He's never had enough money to buy a car or a house.
00:33:59He'd like to do something for his mother.
00:34:01He raised nine children.
00:34:03And he's fighting hard right now.
00:34:07Well, he is in every way a winning young man,
00:34:10but it's impossible to see how he could win this fight.
00:34:15He is giving him an effort.
00:34:16I give him an A-plus for effort.
00:34:20We're okay.
00:34:29Don't stand still.
00:34:30He is catching you.
00:34:32He's really popping you.
00:34:34You've got to be in a counterpuncher
00:34:36and you've got to be moving.
00:34:40You need to be real quick.
00:34:50Magana is one of those fighters
00:34:54who holds his left hand low
00:34:56and tries to use it
00:34:58as a hooking weapon
00:35:00or a jabbing weapon
00:35:01from different positions,
00:35:03but against a good fighter
00:35:04like Barrera,
00:35:05it just leaves openings.
00:35:10Yeah, in Magana's case,
00:35:12you mean his right hand,
00:35:12his lead hand.
00:35:14Yeah.
00:35:14His right hand, excuse me.
00:35:16Herrera landed 35 of 56 power shots
00:35:19in round six,
00:35:20largely because,
00:35:21as Larry Merchant points out,
00:35:23Magana has a habit of holding
00:35:24that lead hand,
00:35:25the right hand,
00:35:26down below his belt.
00:35:27In a great fighter,
00:35:30that style can be effective.
00:35:32Ali held it low.
00:35:34I've known other fighters
00:35:35who've held it low,
00:35:36but you've got to use it more
00:35:38and use it effectively,
00:35:39and since he doesn't use it effectively,
00:35:41he might as well use it
00:35:42to help guard his chin.
00:35:43That's right.
00:35:44And you've got to have head moving,
00:35:45right, Roy?
00:35:46Always, always.
00:35:47But if you fight
00:35:48an opposite-handed guy,
00:35:49you're best to keep
00:35:50your lead hand up.
00:35:53As Barrera has done.
00:35:56Now, one big difference
00:35:57in the bout
00:35:57is Barrera is capable
00:35:58of defending himself
00:35:59when Magana mounts an offense.
00:36:04Magana hasn't been
00:36:05nearly as effective
00:36:06at keeping Barrera's leather
00:36:08off of his face.
00:36:22There he is.
00:36:27referee Robert Byrd
00:36:30ruled it a slip.
00:36:32Second time I see
00:36:33that happen tonight.
00:36:37That's some slip.
00:36:39A heck of a slip.
00:36:46That's the kind of slip
00:36:47that leads to a two-point round.
00:36:48Magana's trying to hit
00:37:01Barrera too hard
00:37:02with the left.
00:37:03That's why he can't land it.
00:37:04It takes so long
00:37:05to get it there
00:37:05because he's joined it
00:37:06with so much power on it.
00:37:10All Barrera does
00:37:11is take a step back
00:37:12because he sees it coming.
00:37:13Nothing spectacular
00:37:19about Barrera's footwork,
00:37:21just the subtle workmanship
00:37:22of a gym-polished professional.
00:37:29That was a good left hook
00:37:31by Magana.
00:37:31He's got a very busy
00:37:43boxing period coming up
00:37:45for the remainder of the fall
00:37:46here on HBO.
00:37:48It's going to be exciting
00:37:49to see some of the terrific
00:37:50bouts we've got coming up
00:37:51in the next few months.
00:37:52I'll tell you about one of them
00:37:53in just a moment.
00:37:55There was that right hook again.
00:38:03And there was the left hook.
00:38:05How good is this guy?
00:38:06How good is this?
00:38:08He's 22 years old,
00:38:10ladies and gentlemen.
00:38:17Six nights from tonight.
00:38:19Don't miss the rematch
00:38:20between Brunel Whitaker
00:38:21and Wilfredo Rivera.
00:38:23Last time,
00:38:24when they fought
00:38:24on the Caribbean island
00:38:25of San Martin,
00:38:26many thought that Rivera
00:38:28won the fight.
00:38:29This time,
00:38:30Brunel Whitaker says
00:38:31he'll be healthier
00:38:32and readier.
00:38:33Part of HBO's
00:38:34Miami Weekend Live
00:38:36next Friday night.
00:38:37And of course,
00:38:37I mentioned all the other
00:38:38great fighters active
00:38:39in the sport.
00:38:40Roy Jones,
00:38:41Oscar De La Hoya,
00:38:43Barrera,
00:38:43Larry Thruin,
00:38:44Felix Trinidad,
00:38:45and Mike Corte.
00:38:46Let's not leave out
00:38:47Brunel Whitaker,
00:38:48who promises he'll have
00:38:49some great moments
00:38:50remaining in his career.
00:38:51Here's the slip.
00:39:00It was a slip,
00:39:02a slip with a right hand
00:39:03landing on the chin.
00:39:04yet another measure,
00:39:14and we've given you
00:39:15a lot of them,
00:39:16of Barrera's effectiveness
00:39:17here tonight.
00:39:18Customarily,
00:39:19conventional fighters
00:39:20like Barrera
00:39:21have difficulty
00:39:21landing the jab
00:39:23against Southpaws,
00:39:24but of course,
00:39:25we've shown you
00:39:26how Magana
00:39:26keeps that right hand
00:39:27low,
00:39:28and as a result,
00:39:29Barrera has landed
00:39:3057% of his attempted jabs.
00:39:34So that's just
00:39:35one more thing
00:39:35he's doing
00:39:36about as well
00:39:37as you can do it.
00:39:37And that's why
00:39:38it's so important
00:39:39that you keep
00:39:39your lead hand up
00:39:40on an opposite-handed fighter.
00:39:55Solid right hand.
00:39:56One more thing
00:40:03Barrera's doing
00:40:03well here,
00:40:04willing to be patient
00:40:06against a fighter
00:40:07that he is beating
00:40:08easily.
00:40:09He has not
00:40:10pressed hard
00:40:11to get the knockout.
00:40:12Like a lot of
00:40:13great knockout punchers,
00:40:14he's waiting
00:40:16to let it come to him.
00:40:18Part of that
00:40:19comes from that part
00:40:20to where we said
00:40:20earlier,
00:40:21Barrera boxes
00:40:22because he likes it.
00:40:23So in other words,
00:40:26he feels
00:40:27no enormous need
00:40:29to try to get
00:40:29out of there
00:40:30in a hurry.
00:40:30No, because he has
00:40:31a chance to show
00:40:32the crowd
00:40:33some more of his skills
00:40:34as long as he's in there.
00:40:35The longer you're in there,
00:40:36the better you can perform.
00:40:38And he's not fighting
00:40:39against an ordinary guy here.
00:40:41This guy has more heart
00:40:42and more courage
00:40:42than a lot of people.
00:40:45So you enjoyed
00:40:46your 12 rounds
00:40:47with James Toney
00:40:47on November 18, 1994?
00:40:49Oh, most definitely.
00:40:53He's going to load
00:41:02up the left hand.
00:41:04Barrera unfazed.
00:41:06Which is one
00:41:07of his biggest problems.
00:41:08He keeps trying
00:41:09to load up the left hand
00:41:10and it's so easy
00:41:11to see it coming
00:41:12when you load it up.
00:41:18Well, as game
00:41:19as Magana is,
00:41:20again,
00:41:21it's hard to imagine
00:41:22what he could do
00:41:23to reverse
00:41:23the tactical momentum.
00:41:26He can always hope,
00:41:27of course,
00:41:28that Bob Byrd
00:41:28will disqualify Barrera
00:41:30for low blows.
00:41:32That won't happen.
00:41:35Well, of course,
00:41:36if you want to get
00:41:36that done,
00:41:37you must fall.
00:41:38jab is picking him apart
00:41:53and he still won't
00:41:54pick his hand up.
00:42:00Magana,
00:42:01I think Magana,
00:42:02he's hurt.
00:42:03I think a bow
00:42:04landed in his eye
00:42:05and he can't see
00:42:07out of the eye
00:42:08because it wasn't
00:42:09that part of a blow.
00:42:11You all right,
00:42:11Jesse?
00:42:12Hey!
00:42:13You all right?
00:42:14You want to go on?
00:42:15Do you want to go on?
00:42:16Let's go.
00:42:18Buck!
00:42:19Got him!
00:42:19Magana catches a break,
00:42:21apparently blinded
00:42:23in the right eye,
00:42:24perhaps by a thumb,
00:42:26and the bell sounds
00:42:27to relieve him
00:42:28of having to take punches.
00:42:31All right, Harold,
00:42:32tell us about this shutout.
00:42:33Larry,
00:42:3580-71,
00:42:38eight rounds to nothing,
00:42:39Marco Antonio Barrera,
00:42:40he has to get
00:42:41a 10-8 round
00:42:42when Jesse Magana
00:42:42went down
00:42:43at the end of the eighth round.
00:42:44That's a knockdown,
00:42:45an extra point for Barrera.
00:42:46Even if the referee
00:42:47didn't think it was a knockdown?
00:42:49No,
00:42:49but for the one
00:42:50at the end of the round,
00:42:51which the referee
00:42:52did think was a knockdown,
00:42:53that's a knockdown.
00:42:59Okay, Jesse,
00:43:01you've got to get on it now.
00:43:02This is it.
00:43:03All your fans in here.
00:43:04We've got to get with it, Jesse.
00:43:05You're far behind.
00:43:11Are we getting
00:43:12into that territory, Roy,
00:43:13where we have to start
00:43:14thinking about
00:43:15how much more
00:43:17should this kid
00:43:18have to take
00:43:19because he can't
00:43:20win the fight?
00:43:21Yes, we most certainly are.
00:43:23Unless it's a knockout
00:43:24and he has shown
00:43:25no ability
00:43:26to land a punch
00:43:27that could really hurt Barrera.
00:43:29Well, we're in that stage
00:43:30right now
00:43:31and you heard
00:43:31the realistic estimation
00:43:33of his corner
00:43:33that he's far behind.
00:43:36Certainly, that's true.
00:43:38Barring some
00:43:38unbelievable discrepancy
00:43:41in the score.
00:43:41as Larry suggests that
00:43:56the outcome is inevitable
00:44:10and it might be time
00:44:12to begin worrying
00:44:13for Magana's safety.
00:44:16You should point out
00:44:17in case you didn't see it
00:44:18that this is by no means
00:44:19as one-sided
00:44:21as, for instance,
00:44:22the Rafael or Gabriel Ruelas-Jimmy Garcia affair,
00:44:25which led to Garcia's
00:44:27unfortunate death.
00:44:28No, it's not.
00:44:29And Magana can land a punch
00:44:31that could drop Barrera
00:44:32if he could land it.
00:44:33He landed a rainbow
00:44:34left over the top
00:44:35right there.
00:44:38No dramatic effect
00:44:39on Barrera.
00:44:44Barrera willing
00:44:45to accept
00:44:45a little more leather
00:44:46from Magana
00:44:47here in the ninth round
00:44:48as he steps in
00:44:49and lands power shots
00:44:50of his own.
00:45:05The crowd knows that the outcome is inevitable,
00:45:23so they wait as we do to see precisely what will happen
00:45:30to bring about the climax.
00:45:31You see right there how easy it is for Burrell
00:45:34to step out the way up to big left for Muganya.
00:45:43Muganya very game, Barrera very much in control.
00:45:46Round 9 of a scheduled 12.
00:46:01He steps his right foot so big when he gets ready to go to level
00:46:05until everybody knows that he's on the way
00:46:07and Barrera just simply steps back.
00:46:11Get to Mayor, all right, the eye, let's work on the eye.
00:46:20Jesse, there's something wrong with the hands.
00:46:24How do you feel?
00:46:25I feel good.
00:46:26You feel good?
00:46:27Yeah, I feel good.
00:46:28You feel good?
00:46:29You feel good?
00:46:30Yeah, I feel good.
00:46:31You feel good?
00:46:32Yeah, I feel good.
00:46:33Referee and the state commission doctor both listening carefully in Muganya's corner.
00:46:47Get off now, get inside, Jesse, and we got to get going.
00:47:00Don't just say they're receiving punches, you need to punch back.
00:47:05Barrera's landing so many blows, he's getting to you.
00:47:09Let's go, Jesse.
00:47:11That didn't exactly sound like a pep rally in there, telling him that Barrera's landing
00:47:25all those blows.
00:47:27Who knows better than Muganya about how many blows Barrera is landing?
00:47:34Why do you want to remind him when he's got a minute of rest?
00:47:39Roy, do you always hear what Coach Merck says to you in the corner between rounds, or does
00:47:43some of it just pass by without you paying a whole bunch of attention to it?
00:47:47Some of it sometimes passes by, but most of the time I'm very alert to everything that
00:47:52he says.
00:47:57Obviously, it's important for fighters to be able to focus between rounds, but it's
00:48:03tough when somebody's wailing on you the way Barrera is wailing on Muganya.
00:48:09And as Larry points out, when somebody then says to you, well, you're taking a lot of
00:48:13punches, you might have a tendency to say, hey, I know that.
00:48:21Muganya can't get close to Barrera, he gets hit, he can't stay outside from Barrera, he gets
00:48:26hit, it's just, it's nowhere he can go.
00:48:28Nope, the whole thing has an air of inevitability.
00:48:33You're watching HBO's Boxing After Dark, one of the most celebrated young stars in the
00:48:38sport going about his work in typically efficient fashion.
00:48:44Marco Antonio Barrera in the white trunks.
00:48:47Marco Antonio Barrera in the white trunks.
00:48:51Marco Antonio Barrera in the white trunks.
00:48:57Marco Antonio Barrera in the white trunks.
00:49:14Marco Antonio Barrera in the white trunks.
00:49:17Marco Antonio Barrera in the white trunks.
00:49:19Marco Antonio Barrera in the white trunks.
00:49:26And the referee stops it wisely.
00:49:31Horrific stopping.
00:49:32A big left hook.
00:49:35Textbook stop from Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:49:38A careful look at Magana on the far side of the ring.
00:49:46And Barrera smiles.
00:49:49Guys, did you see it?
00:49:51We almost saw teeth.
00:49:52He flashed something that amounted to a near grin.
00:49:55Like that.
00:49:56There it is.
00:49:58My God, he's working on his charisma.
00:50:01He's got his charisma in his fists.
00:50:03He's taking pleasure from his greatness.
00:50:06Can you imagine that?
00:50:08The punches finally wore Magana down.
00:50:10Yeah, that was just accumulated punishment.
00:50:14And you knew in those last couple of rounds
00:50:16that it was going to happen sometime, right, Roy?
00:50:18Yeah, you knew it was going to happen.
00:50:19That's what I was saying in the early round.
00:50:21If he continues to keep getting hit with the solid shots
00:50:24that he was getting hit with, he's going to wear down.
00:50:26You know, but if Antonio, if Marco Antonio had gotten impatient
00:50:30and gone for an early knockout, then it wouldn't have looked like that.
00:50:34Well, it wouldn't have because he wouldn't have worked his body
00:50:36he should have.
00:50:37Now, the accumulation wouldn't have been as good
00:50:39because he couldn't land the hard punches as easy
00:50:42as he can land the mediocre ones.
00:50:45Can you envision your good buddy, Kennedy McKinney,
00:50:49winning a fight against this guy?
00:50:52It's tough.
00:50:53I think Kennedy can, but he would have to go into seclusion,
00:50:57train hard for about two and a half to three months,
00:51:00come out with nothing on his mind but beating Marco Antonio Pereira.
00:51:04And fight the fight of his life.
00:51:06And we may get a chance to see McKinney attempt to do just that.
00:51:09As both fighters get their business done tonight, McKinney in less spectacular fashion
00:51:15with the ten-round decision over his opponent, Nestor Lopez.
00:51:19And now here is the finish of this one.
00:51:22There you see, Barrera set him up with the same looping right hand,
00:51:25make him try so hard to defend it, and then hit him with a good left hook.
00:51:29That's what that looping right hand does.
00:51:31It opens up other shots, it opens up the left hook,
00:51:34and there's no way you can avoid it.
00:51:39And let's go to Michael Buffer to finish this one off.
00:51:43Ladies and gentlemen, the end comes at one minute, 56 seconds of round number ten.
00:51:48Referee Robert Byrd calls a halt.
00:51:50The winner and still the undefeated WBO junior featherweight champion of the world,
00:51:58the baby-faced assassin Marco Antonio Barrera.
00:52:07Let's go.
00:52:08Let's go.
00:52:09Let's go.
00:52:10Let's go.
00:52:11Let's go.
00:52:12Let's go.
00:52:13Let's go.
00:52:14Let's go.
00:52:15All right.
00:52:16Forum crowd loves Barrera, and you look at the final punch stat numbers in this one.
00:52:21Let's go.
00:52:22Let's go.
00:52:23Let's go.
00:52:24311 punches landed to only 100 for Magana.
00:52:28The game, Jesse Magana able to throw 549 times, but a lot of them weak, reaching shots
00:52:35against a man who was constantly bearing in and who largely dispensed with the jab after
00:52:40the first few rounds, Roy, when it became obvious that he could land power punches at will.
00:52:44Yeah, he didn't want to throw a jab because maybe he would have gotten caught over or under
00:52:49his jab.
00:52:53Professional effort on the part of the great young 22-year-old star.
00:52:59He goes to 43-0 with 31 knockouts.
00:53:03He's still not terribly anxious to speak English in public, although he's working on it.
00:53:07So we will use interpreter Ray Torres to help out Larry Merchant in the ring.
00:53:12And Marco Antonio, congratulations.
00:53:18Did you see the Kennedy-McKinney fight?
00:53:21And if you did, what was your thoughts about it?
00:53:24He saw the fight and he thought that maybe the war that he had with him took a little out
00:53:39of McKinney, he wasn't the same tonight.
00:53:42Are you concerned that your rematch might be hurt if you wait too long to fight McKinney?
00:53:52Do you think he's going to be hurt if you wait too long to fight McKinney?
00:54:05He doesn't think so because the McKinney-Barrera fight is natural.
00:54:08Tell us your thoughts tonight with all of these outstanding Mexican fighters here, including
00:54:16Chiquita Gonzalez, Zaragoza.
00:54:18What are your feelings about your performance?
00:54:21Was it an incentive for you to perform in front of them?
00:54:24Tell us about your thoughts, with so many great Mexican fighters today, like Chiquita, Zaragoza
00:54:29and everything, about your performance this night, how did you think it was?
00:54:33Well, I think it was very good.
00:54:35Chiquita Gonzalez deserved it more, but at the corner they sent me to do an intelligent fight,
00:54:39a fight in which it doesn't make so much physical pain because we have a big fight.
00:54:43The corner told him that there are a lot of things coming on, bigger fights, not to go out and
00:54:49overexerting himself.
00:54:50He wanted to offer more for Chiquita, but that was the plan to the corner, to go the
00:54:54way they did.
00:54:55Who would you like to fight next?
00:54:59The possibility that there's been talks with Nassim Hamed.
00:55:10That's why we didn't want to go out there and take any chances.
00:55:13It's a good chance that the fight will happen.
00:55:15Thank you very much.
00:55:17Always great to see you.
00:55:18All right.
00:55:21Thanks very much, Larry.
00:55:22Well, Roy, not much more to say about Barrera other than he's great.
00:55:26All right.
00:55:27You've got a title defense coming up October 4, Madison Square Garden, correct?
00:55:32Yes.
00:55:33Against Bryant Brannan.
00:55:34Tell us about the fight and your training for it.
00:55:36Bryant Brannan should be a very interesting fight.
00:55:38He's an undefeated fighter.
00:55:39No fighter likes to lose.
00:55:41But when you're fighting the best fighter in the world, you almost have no other option.
00:55:45So you mean that Bryant Brannan, though he won't like to lose, has no choice because
00:55:49he's going to be fighting you.
00:55:50Now, you come up with all sorts of unusual goals to demonstrate things about yourself,
00:55:55particularly when you think you have the opponent overmatched.
00:55:57And obviously you think you have Brannan overmatched.
00:55:59So what is it you want to show us in this fight?
00:56:01Well, at this time I'm going to go out and use my jab to show that I am the superb fighter
00:56:07that I have been all along.
00:56:09I'm getting pretty much interested back in the sport again like I used to be.
00:56:13In training, training has picked up a lot.
00:56:15I've gotten a lot quicker.
00:56:16You're going to see some stuff that you haven't seen in a while from Roy Jones Jr.
00:56:19All right.
00:56:20Get back in the gym.
00:56:21We'll see you on October 4.
00:56:22All right.
00:56:23Another terrific job tonight.
00:56:24Larry Merchant, your thoughts on the twin victories for McKinney and Barrera?
00:56:28Well, my first thoughts are that Boxing After Dark, B.A.D., has become accustomed to more
00:56:37competitive fights than we saw tonight.
00:56:40Tonight the fights were just B.A.D.
00:56:43This was our most pedestrian occasion yet.
00:56:45Yeah.
00:56:46And sometimes if you have an outstanding fighter like Barrera, he's just too good for ordinary
00:56:51opponents.
00:56:52You have to step up.
00:56:53I'm going to talk about this proposed fight with Named, the very, very exciting British
00:57:01featherweight.
00:57:02Prince Nassim, as they call him.
00:57:03Ah.
00:57:04And he's a featherweight.
00:57:06There has been talk of this fight.
00:57:09But somebody told me that when they proposed the fight that the management of the prince
00:57:15said, we're not interested in finding out how good he is, which is another way of saying
00:57:21he's making an awful lot of money without fighting fighters as good as Barrera.
00:57:26We'll have to keep our eye on fighters who are willing to fight Barrera.
00:57:31And hopefully one of them will be Kennedy McKinney and soon.
00:57:34That's good business.
00:57:35And Barrera is likely to be like Roy Jones pretty soon.
00:57:38He's going to run out of quality opponents who want to face him at 122 or 126 or anywhere
00:57:44in this neighborhood.
00:57:45Well, sometimes a great fighter just gives solo performance, concerts.
00:57:49That's what we saw in this neighborhood.
00:57:52Well, sometimes a great fighter just gives solo performance, concerts.
00:57:56That's what we saw tonight.
00:57:58Speaking of concerts, we're about to promote one as a matter of fact.
00:58:01Because as we look ahead to our next HBO Boxing date, we're also looking ahead to a big weekend
00:58:07of programming here on HBO.
00:58:08The only thing hotter than a match is a rematch.
00:58:14Whitaker versus Rivera.
00:58:16A sizzling split decision still burning with controversy.
00:58:20Their first fight too close to call.
00:58:22Their Miami rematch too hot to miss.
00:58:25World Championship Boxing.
00:58:27Whitaker versus Rivera.
00:58:28Plus hot young heavyweights Tua versus Wilson.
00:58:31Part of HBO's Miami weekend.

00:59:00It's all anal.
00:59:01I think you'll really enjoy it.

00:59:18Here we go, here we go now.
00:59:19Because something higher,
00:59:21something pulsing,
00:59:23something hot
00:59:24is happening in Miami.

00:59:42Only on HBO.

00:59:44Oh!
00:59:44Oh!
00:59:44Oh!
00:59:44Oh!
00:59:45Oh!
00:59:45Oh!
00:59:45Oh!
00:59:45Oh!
00:59:46Oh!
00:59:46Oh!
00:59:47Oh!
00:59:47Oh!
00:59:47And also part of HBO's Miami weekend is inside the NFL.
00:59:50Join hosts Len Dawson, Nick Bonacani, Chris Collinsworth,
00:59:54and Jerry Glanville on location there
00:59:56as they talk about the red-hot surprise of the early season in the NFL,
01:00:00the Miami Dolphins.
01:00:01Joining them will be special guests,
01:00:03Dan Marino and ex-inside-the-NFL fraternity member,
01:00:08Jimmy Johnson.
01:00:08And if you missed it once,
01:00:10don't miss Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel again.
01:00:12This month's installment has that controversial feature
01:00:15on Albert Bell, produced by Spike Lee,
01:00:17and also a look at how players beat the drug testing system in the NFL.
01:00:23Once again, here in the Great Western Forum tonight,
01:00:26Kennedy McKinney got a split-decision victory
01:00:28over a relatively unknown fighter out of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico,
01:00:33Nestor Lopez.
01:00:34Lopez, on his first trip to the USA,
01:00:36actually won the fight on one judge's scorecard,
01:00:39but McKinney was safe on two others.
01:00:41So it was the 30th victory of Kennedy McKinney's career
01:00:44as he looks toward a possible rematch with Marco Antonio Barrera,
01:00:48who scored a TKO over him in the 12th round back on February 3,
01:00:52and got a TKO in the 10th round tonight
01:00:54over a very game Jesse Magana of the San Joaquin Valley.
01:00:59Barrera ultimately putting Magana away with two solid left hooks.
01:01:04And coming up immediately following our show,
01:01:06please stay tuned for the hit comedy series,
01:01:09Arliss with Robert Wool, right here on HBO.
01:01:12So now for Roy Jones, Larry Merchant, Harold Letterman,
