05:36Good, like I said, don't try this at home, just getting on two chairs and try to rip
05:41all your muscles.
05:42It's very important that you're warmed up first and you already can be able to do the
05:45splits on the ground.
05:48Thank you ladies, stand up.
05:52Jinbei.
05:59Hapkido beginning, intermediate and advanced kicking techniques.
06:13We'll start with the first basic kick, which is a basic high kick.
06:17In this one, what I want you to do is to raise the right leg straight up with the toes
06:23pointing
06:24straight up.
06:25The ultimate goal is to hit the right shoulder with your right knee.
06:29In a fast quick motion, going up all the way and bringing it straight back.
06:42Watch this slow motion, the leg comes all the way up and back.
06:51Next kick is a front leg side kick.
06:54In this one, the most important thing is to chamber the leg all the way up to the chest
07:00and shoot it out straight like a bullet.
07:03The area of the impact is with the knife edge of your foot.
07:08It could be done to the knee, the ribs or the face.
07:14Now we're executing the same kick from the rear leg.
07:23Pay attention, the leg comes all the way up and travels in a straight line.
07:30It's very important to lock the leg at the point of impact.
07:34Everything just locks.
07:41Now we're looking at a slow motion, the leg chambers up, gets full extension, recoil back
07:48to the chest, which is very important.
07:51A common mistake for a side kick is that a lot of people, when they do it, they recoil
07:55the leg back to their hips instead of back to the chest.
08:00One more time, the leg comes up, straight out, getting full extension at the point of impact.
08:07Now I'm going to show you the application of the side kick.
08:13As he steps forward to do a front kick, step left foot out, deflect the front kick.
08:20After deflecting the backhand, the right leg chambers all the way up.
08:27And you do a side kick right to the ribs.
08:41Now I'm demonstrating the same thing with the front leg.
08:45Remember, your front leg is your closest weapon towards your opponents.
08:49So if he steps in, anything from his rear hand or rear foot, you can hit him with the
08:54front leg, which is the shortest distance between you and your opponent.
09:04Next kick is a basic front kick.
09:09This time, the leg chambers all the way straight up with your knee pointing up.
09:14The area of the impact is ball of your foot.
09:18This kick could be done to the kneecap, to the stomach, sole plexes, or to the head.
09:29Again, one thing that's very important is understanding the difference between snap kicks and thrust kicks.
09:36This front kick right now is being executed as a thrust kick.
09:41Now we're showing the application of it.
09:43Same thing, the person steps in with a front kick, deflecting it, stepping out of the way, deflecting
09:51the backhand, and a front kick.
10:03Now I'm demonstrating the same thing by trying to beat him into his own kick.
10:08When he does a roundhouse kick, I'm executing a right front kick.
10:22Now we're getting into the basic roundhouse kick.
10:28This kick could be done with the instep, ball of the foot, or even with your shins.
10:37This kick comes around with the knee traveling circular.
10:47Let's watch it together.
10:49Watch the full extension at the point of impact and a clean recoil.
10:55One thing that's very important when you start kicking high is that you need to point the knee
11:01towards your opponent first.
11:04The first thing that's going to come up is your knee.
11:07Then you will kick and recoil.
11:15Always remember to keep your knee as high as you can even after you kick.
11:29Always remember to keep your knee as high as you can even after you kick.
11:35You must understand that everything is released at the last second.
11:41All the kicks are starting very calmly and they explode at the last second.
11:50Now we're showing the application of this kick.
11:54Deflection while he throws a front kick, stepping out of the way, and kicking his supporting leg
12:00kick with the shin bone.
12:08Next kick is an inside crescent kick or an axe kick.
12:15This kick comes around a little bit covering your opponent and straight down.
12:20It also could be done circular like you're slapping someone's right in their face.
12:27Pay attention, the kick comes up from behind him, which is the blind side of your opponent,
12:32and lands in a straight line right on top of him.
12:36This kick could be done to the face, to the collar bone, or you could even land it on your
12:41opponent's leg when he's doing the kick.
12:48Let's watch it again together.
12:51Comes all the way up and straight down.
13:04Now an outside crescent kick straight down or an axe kick.
13:08This kick travels the opposite direction of the inside crescent kick.
13:14Kick also could be done circular, making a big circle.
13:20Notice the leg comes up in a very relaxed manner and it cuts straight down.
13:30So the kick actually starts from the way high and goes straight down.
13:50Let's watch it again.
13:53Going from blind side of your opponent up and straight down.
13:58Could be done with the bottom of your foot or your heel.
14:03The application of this kick.
14:07Deflecting the front kick, blocking the backhand, and doing the kick right to the head.
14:26One more time.
14:27Now this one was the inside crescent kick.
14:37Let's watch it together.
14:40Under, stepping out, deflect, and a kick.
14:48These slow motion techniques should really help you to understand the footwork and all
14:54these techniques.
14:56The best thing to do is to pick a partner and try to imitate all these techniques.
15:03The next one is a shin kick.
15:05This kick could be done in three different ways.
15:10Chambering it up, kicking with the heel at the point of impact, going straight forward.
15:16It could be done slicing, like right now, which comes up in an angle and shoots the heel
15:23circular.
15:25Or it could be done swinging, which I'm doing right now.
15:39Let's watch the application of it.
15:41This was the application of the swinging one.
15:44When the opponent throws a roundhouse kick, you can block the roundhouse and kick the supporting
15:50leg right underneath him.
15:55This kick is a very underestimated kick.
15:57It's very simple, it's very low, but very effective.
16:04Next kick is an inward roundhouse kick or a lotus kick.
16:10This kick could be done with the ball of the foot or the instep.
16:13And it could be done with the thigh, the growing, the chest, or the head.
16:27The knee comes around in a circular manner, kind of like a front kick but a little more circular.
16:42Next kick is an inward hook kick, very practical kick.
16:47It comes up and it goes straight down with your heel towards your opponent's thigh.
16:58It's very important to keep your hands up while you're executing all these kicks.
17:05Let's try to watch the application of it and what happens when you hit an opponent.
17:13Watch the leg comes up, it hits with the heel, it could be finished with the left hook.
17:27Next kick is the groin kick.
17:30This kick is done with the instep of the foot.
17:34The knee comes up, the knee is pointing towards your opponent, releases the foot, straight forward
17:41and recoils.
17:43This kick also could be done to the face when the person is going around or having his head
17:49down like a lot of boxers would do.
18:00It's very important to reach for your opponent and get full extension of your leg.
18:11Remember there are three basic stages in any kind of kicking.
18:16The start, the explosion and the recovery.
18:21So what you need to do to make your kicks very explosive to go through all these three
18:26stages.
18:28Now we're going through a cross step hook kick.
18:32The knee comes up, shoot out a side kick off to the side and pull the heel all the way
18:39around and back to the hip.
18:43Remember power is speed times body weight.
18:47So the leg is very relaxed to the last second and you shoot it out with a lot of speed.
18:54Squats it together to the head.
18:57Cross stepping behind your foot with your heel towards your opponent.
19:01The knee chambers up to the chest, shoots out a side kick and all the way around.
19:16This kick is very effective when it's done to the kidney, to the back of the head or the
19:22face.
19:38So watch it again, slow motion, the knee comes up, explode and recover.
19:52Remember, any one big, small, young, old, with or without an experience can become a very
19:59good professional kicker when they can take on a challenge and work on it.
20:06This kick is a drop kick, it's more of a defensive kick.
20:13The knee comes up and you hit your opponent's leg with the knife edge of your foot.
20:21So watch it together, the knee comes up and you drop the leg right on top of their foot,
20:27the knee or the thigh.
20:32Now one of my favorite kicks, the back kick.
20:44This kick is done in two stages.
20:46You pivot the front leg, look over the shoulder and shoot the leg straight out.
20:52Lock the leg and back.
20:55It's not the same thing as a spinning back kick because there's not a whole lot of spinning
20:59motion in this kick.
21:00kick.
21:01It's very, it's like a straight line.
21:07One thing you want to do, you really want to stick your foot right out there.
21:11Now we're seeing the application when he throws a roundhouse kick and you just return the favor
21:18by a back kick.
21:22Very devastating kick.
21:28Now we're getting into the spinning kicks.
21:31Spinning crescent kick.
21:33One thing you must understand about spinning kicks is that there are two parts into spinning
21:37kicks.
21:38The upper body always carries the lower body.
21:43For instance, for this kick, the upper body spins as much as it can go.
21:49Then the lower body will follow.
21:51Now we're showing the application of it.
21:53When the person throws a roundhouse kick, you spin, look at your opponent before you kick
21:59him and hit with the outside edge of your foot.
22:06Now a spinning hook kick.
22:11Start with executing your back kick off to the side when you turn around and pulling it
22:17in for a hook kick.
22:19It's very quick and round motion kick.
22:26Again, remember, a lot of speed in executing these kicks.
22:32Remember the initiation, the explosion, and recovery.
22:41Let's go through it again.
22:42So you look, bring the knee up, shoot it out, and hook.
22:48This kick could be done with your heel or the bottom of your foot.
22:52Same thing could be done to the kidney or the sole flexes or to the head.
23:06Form is very important when you're working on these kicks.
23:10Height is not as important.
23:11Of course, it's very nice to be able to kick straight up, but not a whole lot of times
23:16you'll be fighting someone who is six, seven, or eight feet tall.
23:21So you really want to concentrate on having good form.
23:35Now we're getting into spinning heel kick.
23:40This kick is very similar to spinning crescent kick.
23:43The difference would be in the way your body is leaning and the area of the impact.
23:48The body turns the same way, but it drops down and it leans towards the leg and you kick
23:54with your heel.
23:56Let's go through the sequence together.
23:59Person steps in, you deflect.
24:02This could be done in any sparring match that you might be doing.
24:09Notice when he throws a roundhouse kick, you step out of the way.
24:13Soon as he's getting the full extension, you return the favor by spinning heel kick.
24:32Next kick is a slicing side kick, but the way it sounds, what you're going to be doing, you're
24:41going to be slicing the knee with the knife edge of your foot.
24:44So the knee comes up like a side kick, but it throws out like a roundhouse kick.
24:52Very strong and powerful kick.
24:58Now we're getting into a vertical side kick.
25:02It's done very similar to a front kick, but it's done with the knife edge of the foot.
25:07It comes up to the chest and shoots straight forward.
25:12Could be done to the leg, to the chest or the head.
25:24Now we're getting into the knee kicks, which are very practical in close fighting.
25:31The straight up knee kick is when you bring your knee straight up.
25:35Now we're going to the round kick, which is executed like a roundhouse kick with the toes
25:40pointed in a round motion.
25:47These kicks are very devastating when it's done in a close range, when it's done to the
25:52kidney, to the head, especially when you pull your opponent down.
26:00Thai boxers are very popular.
26:07And they're known for their knee kicks.
26:21Now we're executing a jump knee kick, which is done very similar to a jump front kick.
26:26You jump up, grab your opponent's head, and you smash it right with the knee.
26:35Now I call this kick a scoop kick.
26:38This is more of a defensive kick, which you step out of the way, you bring your foot upwards,
26:45and hit your opponent with a knife edge of the leg.
26:49It might not look very impressive, but it certainly works.
26:55Now we're getting into more of the jump kicks, starting with the basic jump front kick.
27:00These kicks are done with the front leg, and one thing to remember is that if you want to
27:05get height in these kicks, the opposite leg should come as high as it can before the kicking
27:12leg actually executes the kick.
27:14Pay attention how high the left leg comes.
27:20Again, it's very important to go to the peak of the height and shoot the kicking leg and recoil.
27:36Now we're doing the same kick on the bag, but you can hit the opponent with both legs.
27:42Anytime you hit someone two times when you're in the air, you run the chance of falling and
27:49not being very strong and devastating.
28:00Remember, there's a lot of torque and a lot of power into a jump front kick.
28:08Now we're showing the pop-up jump front kick, which is done more from a stationary position.
28:14You need to jump up, both legs to the chest, tuck, and kick.
28:21One thing's very important about tucking is that from the beginning of the kick, if you jump
28:26with both legs, there's not a whole lot of need to tuck later, because your foot already
28:31boot would be in a chambered position.
28:42Now we're getting into jump roundhouse kick.
28:46It's done kind of like a jump front kick from the start of it, and your body turns at the
28:51last second.
28:54Notice the left leg throws itself all the way up, the body turns, and you kick with instep
29:01hip, or ball of the foot.
29:13One thing very important when you're working on jump kicks, it's very important you understand,
29:18in order to get a good jump kick, you need to get your hips all the way up first.
29:25Do not use a whole lot of flexibility when you're doing these jump kicks.
29:31It's more important to jump, get the hip aligned with your target, than shoot it straight out.
29:40Now we're showing a pop-up roundhouse from the rear leg.
29:44It's a very explosive kick.
29:49Jump up both legs, and shoot the right leg straight out.
29:59Watch the explosion.
30:01So the knees come up, you explode, then you recover.
30:12Remember, speed is very important in executing these kicks, and we're going through the application
30:17of this kick.
30:29Remember, these video tapes are not designed for your entertainment, and for the sake of
30:35demonstration, and just keeping you busy.
30:40These tapes were designed to educate you and teach you a different way.
30:45Not necessarily the only way, but my way.
30:54Now we're getting into jump side kick.
30:57This is more of a distance kick than a hike kick.
31:01Pushing off from your front leg, cross stepping behind your foot, bringing the leg up, and shoot
31:07it in a straight manner.
31:32Let's watch it again together.
31:33Take a step, the knee comes up to the chest, shoot it straight forward, and back.
31:58My instructor told me something a long time ago, which has always stuck to my mind.
32:04He told me, what I can do, you can do also, and it's very important for everyone to notice.
32:13None of this stuff is magic or hard to do.
32:17If you put enough time into it, you will be able to do it.
32:21And this one, which is a pop-up side kick from the front leg, jumping both knees up, kicking
32:28with the front leg.
32:31The area of the impact is knife edge, and could be done to the knee, lower body, chest, or even
32:39the head.
32:41Notice how the legs come up, boom, the explosion.
32:55Now we're getting into a flying side kick.
32:59This kick was originally designed to kick someone off a horse.
33:03So that should tell you that you need to get a lot of height before doing this kick.
33:09If you're kicking, if you're a right leg kicker, you need to be jumping off your left leg, and
33:14opposite if you're kicking with the left leg.
33:20Notice the running, you run, take the steps, push off the left leg, big step, bring both
33:31knees up, weight to the chest, and explode.
33:35And recover.
33:46Let's try it again together.
33:49You need a good running start.
33:59This kick is a very fancy kick.
34:01It's a good challenge for you as far as practicality.
34:04There's not a whole lot of times that we can go around and kick people on horses.
34:10But it's a great challenge for you to work on in the studio.
34:15Now we're doing the same thing, jumping up both feet, and making the impact with both
34:20feet.
34:22Same manner as the other one, pushing off the left leg, both knees come up to the chest,
34:26fist, and you kick with both feet.
34:35Yes!
35:02Now we're getting into jump hook kick.
35:08It's done very similar to a jump side kick.
35:11Pushing off front leg, shooting out the side kick off to the side and pulling it straight
35:17in.
35:18This kick could be done downwards or straight.
35:29Notice that I'm starting in like jump front kick this time.
35:32The knee comes up, kicks the back of the opponent and recoils.
35:51Same thing again, this is a good practice for accuracy.
36:02Jump up like a front kick, the left leg comes up and the right leg shoots it straight out.
36:10An exciting kick for demonstrations.
36:18Now we're getting into jump back kick.
36:25Stepping forward, jumping up both knees to your chest.
36:29Remember there's not a whole lot of spinning motion in a jump back kick.
36:33Knee comes up and goes straight forward.
36:42Notice the both legs come up, explode and recoil.
36:52Just watch it again.
36:54Then the knees come up, way up to the chest.
36:59The hip comes up and shoot the kick out in a straight line.
37:07It's very important that all the jump kicks be executed while you're in the air.
37:13So you're kicking with all your body weight.
37:18Now we're doing a 360 jump back kick.
37:22Pushing off your right leg, turning completely in the air all the way around, kicking with the right leg.
37:34Let's do that again.
37:35Pushing off the right leg, turning in the air and all the way forward.
37:48This kick could be very deceiving when it's done to your opponent while he's backing up.
37:53So you can fake it like you're doing a roundhouse with the left leg.
37:56Turning in the air and doing a back kick.
38:26You must look at these videotapes of more than one of them.
38:29It's more of a vehicle or a director who's going to open the doors for you to maybe something different.
38:35But you have to understand that you have to enter the doors by yourself.
38:40You're the one that's going to make the difference by putting all the effort behind these kicks.
38:45Now we're getting into jump spinning crescent kick.
38:49Jumping both legs, shooting the right leg straight out, kicking with the outside edge of the foot.
39:00Let's watch it together.
39:02Jumping both knees up, turning, looking at your opponent before you make the contact.
39:11Notice how the legs were bent before I jumped up.
39:22Just watch the kick done to the bag.
39:27Stepping forward.
39:31See the legs work like springs.
39:34Bend them down and push off.
39:52And we'll try to get a little more height this time.
39:59Stepping forward.
40:02Pushing ball your feet straight out and back.
40:12Remember all these kicks would work on actually an opponent if it's done at the right time.
40:27Now we're doing a jump spinning heel kick.
40:33Jumping up, leaning into your right leg, kicking with the heel.
41:01Both legs up and straight line.
41:23Now one of my favorite ones, jump spinning hook kick.
41:27This kick starts like a jump spinning back kick because you gotta shoot your back kick out first.
41:33Both legs, kick recoil and back.
41:39If it's done quick and at the right time you can take the head of your opponents right off.
41:58Next kick we're going to teach you right now is a low spinning sweep.
42:02Pay attention to this one, there's a lot of detail work.
42:05From here, first thing I want you to do is to pivot the front foot so your heel is towards
42:10the target and drop straight.
42:14Pretend like you're sitting on a huge clock.
42:16Put your left hand on 12, right hand under on 3.
42:21Spin around, low spinning heel kick.
42:24You can stop here for the first couple times but try to make it all the way through and stand
42:30up.
42:31Let's do it in two counts.
42:33One, sit.
42:35Two, kick.
42:37And up.
42:38Now we do a couple times, one motion.
42:39From here, step.
42:43Again.
42:45Step.
42:47One more time.
43:01And up.
43:03The application of it would be if you're fighting someone.
43:09They're going to be throwing your right roundhouse to your head.
43:12From here, you can drop down.
43:14Do a right roundhouse.
43:15Drop.
43:17Kick heel to the heel.
43:20One more time.
43:21From here, kick.
43:22Drop.
43:24And back.
43:29Drop.
44:01Next kick is called inside crescent kick to jump spinning crescent kick.
44:06What it is, is that you want to gain distance towards your opponent doing a single kick and a jump
44:12kick.
44:13So from here, you're going to do an inside crescent kick, turn all the way.
44:17When you're looking at the target, the left leg is going to get off the ground, push off the right
44:22leg, come up and do another one.
44:24Come up.
44:24And land.
44:26So from here, first one, turn.
44:30Second one.
44:32Go forward.
44:34Again.
44:35One.
44:36Two man.
44:38And forward.
45:03Now we're going to demonstrate some of the two man kicking drills that I've done.
45:06That we study in our studio.
45:08These kicking drills are very important hot key though.
45:11Especially if you're fighting more than one opponent.
45:13Because the leg is not going to come down unless you kick both opponents.
45:17First one.
45:18Front kick to side kick.
45:23Now full speed.
45:30Making sure that after the first kick, you look at the second person.
45:35Make sure they're there.
45:36One more time.
45:36Full speed.
45:39Back.
45:41Back.
46:07Back.
46:07Back.
46:21The next kicking drill we're going to demonstrate is a roundhouse ball of the foot to side kick.
46:27This time the roundhouse is done to the midsection.
46:30Bring your leg up.
46:31Ball of the foot.
46:32Look at the other opponent.
46:34Side kick to the midsection.
46:36Recoil.
46:36And back.
46:37At full speed.
46:39Go.
46:43Make sure you get full extension of the leg at the point of impact keeping your eyes on
46:48your opponent.
46:49Head level.
46:50Full speed.
46:52Go.
46:53One more time.
46:57Okay.
46:58The next kick is a front kick to back kick.
47:01Front kick done straight forward to the person in front of you.
47:04With the ball of the foot.
47:06Recoil.
47:07Look over the shoulder.
47:09Straight to the person behind you with the knife edge.
47:11Recoil.
47:12Now really explosive and fast.
47:14Go.
47:24Next combination kick is a front kick to jump front kick.
47:28From here will be a left front kick.
47:31Recoil.
47:32Look at the other target.
47:33Jump off your right leg.
47:35To another front kick.
47:38From here.
47:39One.
47:41Two.
47:43Stomach.
47:46Pick.
47:50And back.
47:52And back.
48:08The next one is a round house to a back kick.
48:13So from here we're going to do a round house ball of the foot.
48:17Recoil.
48:18Look over the shoulder to a back kick.
48:25Now come back.
48:34Take your left side.
48:45And back.
48:47back. The next one could be a shin kick to jump shin kick. This one, to the knee, jump
48:56off, the other person's knee. Now, we're getting into what I call the combination
49:21number one, which consists of three basic kicks. Front kick, cross-step side kick, and a roundhouse kick.
49:47These kicks could be executed, all three of them, knee level, stomach level, or head level.
49:58Notice how the leg chambers up, kicks out and recoil.
50:24Let's look at it from a side angle.
50:30Front kick, cross-step high side kick, and a high roundhouse kick.
50:53Combination number two, inside crescent kick, to a cross-step hook kick, look over the shoulder,
51:00and a back kick. Right leg comes round, and straight down. Cross-step behind the leg, hook kick,
51:16look over the shoulder, and a back kick. Remember, sparking is very important when executing these combinations.
51:26What I mean by sparking is having that quickness at the point of impact. Look, and shoot!
51:37Always remember the principle of the bullet, which is very amazing. When you throw a bullet towards an opponent,
51:44it can never do any harm or damage. But when it's done, inside a gun, and when you shoot it
51:52out,
51:52it can go right through your opponent. Look at your foot as a bullet, and your body as the gun.
52:06Combination number three, which are the double kicks. By the way, these kicks are being executed by one of my
52:14junior black belts,
52:16Nicola Holland. Let's look at this double kick. It's a front kick, roundhouse kick.
52:24Cross-step behind the foot, low-high side kick. Cross-step behind the foot, and hook kick, roundhouse.
52:41When working on these double kicks, understand that there's only one pivot for both of these kicks.
52:49And the first kick is usually a fake. It causes your opponent to look down, and you can kick him
52:56up to the face.
53:22Now we're getting into combination number four, a little more difficult combination kicks, which are the triple kicks.
53:29What we're doing, we're adding a side kick to combination number three.
53:34So we do a fake front kick, roundhouse, and sticking the side kick right in the middle.
53:45Cross-step, triple side kick.
53:52Knee, stomach, and the head.
54:01And cross-stepping behind the foot.
54:06Hook kick.
54:08Roundhouse, back to the chest, and side kick.
54:17Remember, it doesn't matter what style you study, kicking can complement your style and make you a better martial artist
54:25all around.
54:28Now more of the challenging kicks.
54:30Jump front kick, legs apart.
54:36Most important thing in this kick is to jumping up with both knees up first, driving your hands straight inside
54:43your legs, and kicking with ball your feet.
54:46Let's look at it together.
54:47You step forward, bring your hands down to push yourself off the ground.
54:53You're going to punch yourself up, hands down, and two kicks.
55:12Let's look at the same thing again.
55:14At the same time.
55:18You step forward.
55:21Level three times.
55:28Bring the hands again.
55:33punching yourself right off the ground and two kicks this is a kind of a
55:46different kind of kick what it is is a flying sidekick to jump back kick in the
55:51air gotta be pushing up with your left leg just like you would do for a flying
56:00sidekick and a quick turn in the air to do a back kick
56:27remember a kicking is an art
56:36now we're getting into the split kick
56:40the way to do this kick is to start just like a flying sidekick jumping off left leg
56:45bringing both legs up to the chest executing a roundhouse ball to foot and a sidekick at the
56:51same time the explosion time is the whole key the knees up first then explode let's
57:02look at it together knees up explode recoil and back
