00:01:56trained under the likes of Ed Parker and Bruce Lee among the books that he has authored outside of the
00:02:08martial category is something called flight of the Avenger which is an autobiographical account of
00:02:14President George Bush's efforts in World War two more pertinent to our category this afternoon however
00:02:25is what is widely regarded as a as a cult classic in the martial arts called Zen in the martial

00:02:40a
00:02:41dojo a studio a school is all about quote a dojo practice hall is a miniature cosmos where we make
00:02:51contact with
00:02:52ourselves our fears anxieties reactions and habits it is an arena of confined conflict where we confront an opponent

00:06:26Mr. Mark Gannon
00:06:32Mr. Danny Cruz
00:06:38and Mr. Eric Friske
00:06:45thank you gentlemen
00:06:47now I'd like to briefly describe what it is you're about to witness this afternoon
00:06:53Hapkido is literally defined as the art of coordinated power
00:06:57it is a century old art
00:06:59centuries old art that traces its roots
00:07:01to ancient Korea
00:07:07Hapkido emphasizes the harmonization and refinement of the mind body and spirit as a means to perfect one's character
00:07:17because Hapkido is a multifaceted and all encompassing martial art that is it provides its students with skills in the
00:07:26defense against and execution of
00:07:29hand techniques
00:07:31hand techniques
00:07:32garment clothing techniques
00:07:33joint locks
00:07:35throwing
00:07:36falling
00:07:37punching
00:07:37kicking and weapons
00:07:44in light
00:07:45in light of the multifaceted
00:07:46component of Hapkido
00:07:48we couldn't possibly show it all
00:07:51to you in one day
00:07:53in fact Hapkido has its one of its twelve tenants
00:07:56quote
00:07:57quote
00:07:57do not think you can learn Hapkido in a day
00:08:00it will take your entire lifetime to learn
00:08:08in light of this we have compiled examples of various techniques from most skill levels
00:08:14that we think will demonstrate to you how exciting and effective Hapkido can be
00:08:22we will begin by watching a very brief example of a warm-up session that precedes every formal class
00:08:29you will see basically breathing exercises
00:08:33where the students will assume a horse stance type position
00:08:39put their both arms out and draw in their arms along with a breath
00:08:44that is designed to draw in the power that is inherent in what we call the universal or external key
00:08:52okay
00:08:52they will then lock this breath in and attempt to mix it with your naturally occurring internal key with which
00:09:01you were born
00:09:02okay
00:09:03from there they will focus the energy out in attempt to focus both the external and internal powers
00:09:12to a desired direction
00:09:15focal point
00:09:16after that they will
00:09:18roll into some very brief examples of
00:09:21stretching and punching and kicking warm-up exercises
00:09:31throughout the entire demonstration you will want to try and detect
00:09:35all the students use of Hapkido's three principles
00:09:39non-resistance
00:09:40which is also the philosophy of Hapkido
00:09:44circular motion
00:09:46and the water principle
00:09:47okay
00:09:49I will attempt to see if we can define those together as the demonstration rolls forward
00:09:54by the way
00:09:55I just wanted to mention to you all that
00:09:58let me ask
00:09:59how many parents are here with kids within the age ranges of three to ten?
00:10:05do we have any parents here in that category?
00:10:07good
00:10:07how many of you are familiar with the Mighty Morphin Power Ranger phenomenon?
00:10:13okay
00:10:15I have watched some of my neighbors specifically across the street get involved with what they see on TV
00:10:22it's a very exciting thing to watch
00:10:25but I wanted to cite this example very specifically because
00:10:30what they see on TV
00:10:32if they pick it up
00:10:34and happen to get lucky
00:10:36can cause serious serious damage to each other
00:10:39this is not anything to fool around with
00:10:43okay
00:10:43this is one of my deepest concerns when I see the
00:10:46the TV and mass media portraying the martial arts in this fashion
00:10:50someone is going to get hurt
00:10:52it's not right
00:10:53this is an institution like many others
00:10:56that will help focus that type of concern
00:10:59and correct what I see could be a big problem
00:11:02so what you see here today
00:11:04please take with a grain of salt
00:11:06if you try and do it at home
00:11:08okay by yourself
00:11:10it really should be done here
00:11:11or under the supervision of someone who knows what they're doing
00:11:15okay
00:11:18alright
00:11:21the first demonstration will offer you a glimpse of various hand techniques
00:11:25punch defense garment holds that you would encounter as a beginning and intermediate level student
00:11:29but before that we will go through our warm-up exercise
00:11:52okay
00:11:53okay
00:11:53line up
00:11:53yes sir
00:11:54please

00:12:12thank you
00:12:13thank you
00:12:21thank you

00:15:44What you just saw.
00:15:45Go right ahead.
00:15:51What you just saw usually occurs about 25 minutes into a standard warm-up session.
00:15:59Where we do side splits and front splits.
00:16:02All of those things that you tend to see professional athletes do when they warm up.
00:16:06Most specifically gymnasts.
00:16:09We like to get their flexibility and we strive for it, but you know.
00:16:14Okay.
00:16:15Again, as a matter of recap, the first demonstration will offer you a glimpse of various hand techniques, punch defenses,
00:16:24and garment holds that you would encounter as a beginning and intermediate level student.

00:20:01the art of coordinated power one of our goals is to try
00:20:07to harmonize all of our body parts head limbs etc etc into one cohesive package
00:20:16of power okay since some of us are made of smaller bones and muscles than
00:20:23others sometimes we feel threatened by those that are bigger than us okay for
00:20:32women this might be particularly true okay the next example highlights options
00:20:39that women have in particular situations what you will see are two
00:20:44intermediate advanced students intermediate slash advanced students
00:20:49denying their attackers the luxury of victory and then you will see two
00:20:54advanced female students persuading their assailants to look elsewhere for

00:24:56Yes, sir.
00:25:07We will see three pairs of advanced red-belt men. They'll show you how one might deflect
00:25:14an oncoming punch in six distinct ways. Now here's an opportunity to try and focus in,
00:25:22see if you can determine how non-resistance and circular motion are applied. Mr. Schwartz?
00:25:30Sir?
00:25:35There you are.

00:27:49like their bodies were falling over a waterfall?
00:27:52I saw it.
00:27:53How about you guys?
00:27:54Okay.
00:27:55This next performance puts father and son together
00:27:58in a harmonious duel of familial affection
00:28:03that shows how even a skilled youngster might still just get his way.
00:28:11Aaron Schwartz, now six-and-a-half years old,
00:28:13has been studying Hapkido for two years
00:28:15and trains twice a week in the junior children's program.

00:30:35Ladies and gentlemen, the sports fan room.
00:30:46Okay, our next category also gets a title.
00:30:51Big black dominoes will now fall relative to the execution of their techniques.
00:30:58Hapkido is generally a defense-oriented martial art.
00:31:03And as we all know, legs are generally longer and stronger than our arms.
00:31:10So if we are involved in a situation where someone is trying to kick at us,
00:31:15we need to make sure we get out of the way.
00:31:19Along with this skill, which is a skill in itself, just getting out of the way,
00:31:24these next folks will get out of the way and counter from a position that necessitates balance
00:31:34and good judgment of distance and timing.
00:31:39Mr. Schwartz.
00:31:50Praise the audience!

00:33:19Sir!
00:33:22Yes, sir.
00:33:27Minus.
00:33:28Yes, sir.
00:33:32Yes, sir.
00:33:34Yes, sir.
00:33:36Yes, sir.
00:33:36Yes, sir.
00:33:41Yes, sir.
00:33:51You might ask yourself, isn't it enough that I learn how to defend myself against somebody with effective arms and
00:33:59legs?
00:34:00Maybe not.
00:34:02Maybe not.
00:34:03Okay?
00:34:03What if there's a weapon involved?
00:34:05In Hapkido, like most other martial arts, the philosophy of a weapon is this.
00:34:12In the hands of a skilled practitioner, it is simply an extension of what already exists.
00:34:20The only difference between the weapon process and the weaponless process is distance and the contact surface.
00:34:32This next demonstration will try to prove to you that point with a knife.
00:34:41Shoot.
00:34:42Time.
00:34:44Right.
00:34:45Good.
00:34:47Hang on.
00:34:47Right up.
00:34:48Start.
00:34:50Ready to come back.
00:34:53Good.
00:34:53Hang on.
00:34:54Now we're here.
00:35:03See.
00:35:11See.
00:35:13Oh, God!
00:35:14Oh, God!

00:36:41SHUT IT!
00:36:42SHUT IT!
00:36:42SHUT IT!
00:36:50Make no mistake about it, if those two gentlemen did not understand how to correctly deal with
00:36:57this situation, although the knife was not sharp on the blade, one wrong move and would
00:37:03be seeing colors on top of cars that we don't want to see, so that was a very good demonstration
00:37:10of that. Our next category, quote, since Hapito attempts to perfect one's character through
00:37:17a lifetime of discipline and respect, provisions were made for the entertainment and education
00:37:24of the more elderly and sometimes handicapped enthusiasts. This next performance speaks volumes
00:37:32about why a lack of respect and courtesy for people seemingly handicapped may not be such
00:37:39a good idea.
00:37:40Screw the light up!
00:37:41Yes, sir!
00:37:46Yeah!
00:37:50Right up!

00:40:42Maybe they think twice about assaulting someone with a cane, huh?
00:40:47Okay
00:40:50Back to the process of Hakido and martial art defense without knives or canes.
00:40:59How do we develop that process as close to reality as possible without hurting ourselves?
00:41:07What we do is suit up head-to-toe and try to practice literally self-defense.
00:41:17And shoot right up!
00:41:20And shoot right up!
00:41:23Stand up right up!
00:41:25Stand up right up!
00:41:27Yeah!
00:41:29Right up!
00:41:29Right up!
00:41:36This is a free-form process.
00:41:40They do not know what's coming.

00:43:00Push your teeth.
00:43:02Jump!
00:43:03Come on.
00:43:07Face each other.
00:43:09Good!
00:43:10Line up!
00:43:14Come on!
00:43:17Go!
00:43:18Come on!

00:43:19Come on!
00:43:21Good!
00:43:23Good!
00:43:23Good!
00:43:23Good!
00:43:23Good!
00:43:24Hopefully it was evident to everybody that our two, our two demonstrators had a chance to
00:43:31try and apply those things that they have learned.
00:43:34And hopefully it should also have been obvious that it was done so in the utmost, with the
00:43:42utmost control and within an environment that was controlled with Mr. Schwartz conducting,
00:43:49telling them to break and continue to make sure that no one continues when they shouldn't.
00:43:53Okay?
00:43:54There's great care in here taken to make sure that everyone can come back tomorrow and continue
00:44:00training with a smile on their face.
00:44:02Okay?
00:44:02Okay?
00:44:03Our next category might be titled Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover.
00:44:09Okay?
00:44:10I will let that hopefully speak for itself.
00:44:17Lead up!
00:44:18Fine!
00:44:27The leg is set!
00:44:31Line up!
00:44:32Good!
00:44:35Face each other!
00:44:37Good!
00:44:38Good!
00:44:38Good!
00:44:39There's the one more.
00:44:43Hey!
00:44:44I hear you!
00:44:56Mr. Gregory, you okay?
00:45:02You all right?
00:45:11Okay.
00:45:17Ground picture double.
00:45:18Step.
00:45:22Step.
00:45:24Line up.
00:45:25Step.
00:45:29Good, guys.
00:45:37All of those folks are currently first degree black belts and have been studying here on an average of six
00:45:45years or so, for an average of six years or so.
00:45:48The next demonstration will be of a similar type. The only real difference now is that it's going to be
00:45:58executed by one person. There will be one defender against three attackers, and that defender will be one of our
00:46:08fourth degree senior instructors, and he is Mr. Danny Cruz.
00:46:38Okay, before we begin, one more note, please. Try and keep a careful eye on how circular...
00:46:46and how unrelenting Mr. Cruz is in his pursuit and defense of his assailants.
00:47:24Three against one, ladies and gentlemen.
00:47:37Don't play an applause when it's friendly.
00:47:39Dr. Danny Cruz, head to leg up.
00:48:07Who all thinks this looks like fun?
00:48:10Anybody?
00:48:11Yes, okay.
00:48:12I happen to agree.
00:48:14As a matter of fact, I happen to agree to the point that I think I'm missing out.
00:48:18So I think it's my turn.
00:48:22Next group.
00:48:23Sir.
00:48:27It's okay.
00:48:28I'm sorry.
00:48:42Now they were supposed to start even, but I noticed Mr. Carter a little trick in the back.
00:48:49Let's see what happens.
00:48:54I don't know, Mr. Dan.
00:48:56What's this?
00:48:57I don't know.
00:48:59I don't know.
00:49:06I don't know.
00:49:08I don't know.
00:49:21I don't know.
00:49:36I don't know.
00:49:41I don't see how nice the heart is.
00:49:48Yeah!
00:49:51Yeah!
00:49:55Yeah!
00:49:56Turn around and fix your knees.
00:50:02Turn around and fix your double.
00:50:05Face the turn.
00:50:07Yeah!
00:50:08Yeah!
00:50:09Line up.
00:50:13Yeah!
00:50:15Yeah!
00:50:16Yeah!
00:50:17Yeah!
00:50:18On your left.
00:50:19Yeah!
00:50:20And...
00:50:21Smith!
00:50:29Unarmed defense against the sword.
00:50:31This time, the one who is attacked by the sword will not even have the luxury that I have.
00:50:39In other words, hold up.
00:50:40And let's do that same thing.
00:50:48Yeah!
00:50:49Yeah!
00:50:53If you've got two, right up!
00:50:57That's true!
00:51:01Yeah!
00:51:02Right up!
00:51:03There you go!
00:51:03Yeah!
00:51:04Go!
00:51:06One, two, two!
00:51:37Oh
00:51:48Eiza!
00:51:49Eiza!
00:51:51Shhh!
00:52:37I
00:52:38Woo!
00:52:53Hey, ayah!
00:53:36One of the points you could have
00:53:38taken away from that demonstration is that even though the odds were terribly against
00:53:44the unarmed person, where there's a will, there is a way, okay?
00:53:51Next group, you'd be surprised how useful the belt that is wrapped around your waist
00:53:58can be.
00:54:24Watch carefully.
00:54:28.
00:54:30.
00:54:32.
00:54:32.
00:54:33.
00:54:33.
00:54:33.
00:54:35.
00:54:36.
00:54:36.
00:54:43.
00:54:45Aay-yaayoo!
00:54:55Hey!
00:54:57Hey!
00:54:59Hey, hata!
00:55:12Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:55:33Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:56:13Oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:56:19.
00:56:20.
00:56:20.
00:56:20.
00:56:21.
00:56:21.
00:56:22.
00:56:22.
00:56:23.
00:56:26.
00:56:26.
00:56:27Thanks.
00:56:28Hi!
00:56:30Mr. Grandmaster Hunt.
00:56:32Hi!
00:56:33He's listening!
00:56:58Wow, who could have thought a belt could be used so effectively, huh?
00:57:03Our last category prior to the kicking department is the surprise that I alluded to earlier.
00:57:15Shoot!
00:57:16One, two, and up!
00:57:23Try a master on it, shoot!
00:57:25Show it, shoot!
00:57:29And then, line up!
00:57:33This, kill it, shoot!
00:57:37And then, come here!
00:57:43I'm a great dog!
00:57:52There will be no prisoners taken here.
00:58:07By the way, ladies and gentlemen, when they do these finishing holes, it doesn't look
00:58:11as big as some of the punching and kicking.
00:58:14But people pass out, or they die from these holes.
00:58:18They have to stop when they slap, but when they apply them, your head starts to get dizzy,
00:58:23your eyes fog up, and if you're not careful when you do these things, you can seriously
00:58:28injure some of them, fractured larynxes, or cause brain damage.
00:58:32Watch her!
00:58:36PZ!
00:58:42PZ!
00:58:42PZ!
00:58:43PZ!
00:58:43PZ!
00:58:54PZ!
00:59:09If you don't take your attacker out with a punch or a kick like that, you will end up
00:59:15very quickly on the floor, on the ground, in a situation very similar to what you see.
00:59:29Can I let you go?
00:59:33Sure it is.
01:00:00I believe it goes something like this.
01:00:02This is quid pro quo.
01:00:20Mr. Gannon, would you turn around and do that this way one more time for us?
01:00:25Can you do this for sports?
01:00:29I think we have one more.
01:00:31You can do it slower this time so you can see what happens.
01:00:36He gets his revenge later when I get to do it.
01:00:38You have to do it.
01:00:42All right, go back and go.
01:00:45Takes him down, locks the throat.
01:01:48Thank you, Joplin.
01:01:51Joplin.
01:01:53Joplin.
01:01:54Joplin.
01:01:56Thank you, Joplin.
01:02:04All right.
01:02:05Our very last category
01:02:07happens to be one that
01:02:09highlights the
01:02:11kicking aspect of Hapkido.
01:02:14Hapkido, as I alluded to
01:02:15earlier, is a Korean martial
01:02:17art, one of the
01:02:19main identifiers
01:02:21or definers
01:02:23of a Korean art
01:02:25can be said
01:02:27to be kicking.
01:02:30Okay? And as we had discussed
01:02:31earlier, Hapkido is the art
01:02:33of coordinated power.
01:02:35The kicks that you are about
01:02:37to see require exactly
01:02:39that.
01:02:40You must be able to coordinate
01:02:43your entire body
01:02:44into a harmonious
01:02:46and well-timed unit
01:02:48that executes itself
01:02:50in a kicking form.
01:02:53you will see five of them.
01:02:55The first one, I will identify
01:02:58after they come out.
01:03:01Okay, next.
01:03:03Line up!
01:03:16Go!
01:03:17Go!
01:03:20Line up!
01:03:21Yes, sir!
01:03:23Line up your mouth.
01:03:27Line up your mouth.
01:03:34Line up your mouth.
01:03:37Line up your mouth.
01:03:37Yes, sir!
01:03:38Okay.
01:03:39Flying side kick
01:03:41using one leg
01:03:43as the kicking leg.
01:03:46Gentlemen.
01:03:48Ah!
01:03:50Ah!
01:03:55Ah!
01:03:56Ah!
01:03:57Ah!
01:04:01Ah!
01:04:09Ah!
01:04:15Ah!
01:04:19Ah!
01:04:21Ah!
01:04:21Ah!
01:04:23Ah!
01:04:25Two of us,
01:04:25Ah!
01:04:26That kicking height
01:04:27is over our heads.
01:04:29Just to give you some perspective on that.
01:04:32The next kick you will see, the second of five, is a jumping front kick with their feet apart.
01:04:41apart. So the visual will be two undesired folks that are harassing your loved ones in
01:04:48a bar or other public place that happen to be just this far apart.
01:05:28All right.
01:05:44If you pay close attention, you would see that the striking angle on that previous kick would
01:05:50have attacked the chin or so. Upward motion. This next kick, titled a scissors kick, same
01:06:00type of situation, same type of target, different angle of attack.
01:06:19Up for three.
01:06:20Up for three.
01:06:49These two gentlemen can strike three targets before their feet hit the ground. Right here,
01:06:55we have a taker. A challenger. Okay? We need Mr. Buck, please.
01:07:01Sir!
01:07:05Let's see if he can pull it off, huh? Remember now, it only works if he makes contact and
01:07:13effective contact before any of his flying feet touch the ground.
01:07:17Let's see if he can pull it off.
01:07:32Let's see if he can pull it off.
01:07:54That was a front kick, a back leg side kick, and a roundhouse all before he came out.
01:08:03Okay. We have two more kicks, which I think you will find very entertaining. The first one
01:08:12will be very similar to the first one you saw, except this time the kickers are going to try
01:08:19and keep both feet together before they make contact with the target. That is to say they
01:08:25have no support below them while they're kicking. Like the first one, they had one leg they could
01:08:32support while the other one kicked. In this case, that is not so. Contact will be made by
01:08:38by both feet at the same time.
01:09:20We got a little higher. What do you think? Can we do it? I think so. Let's give him some
01:09:26support.
01:09:40we got a little bit of support.
01:09:42Yes, sir.
01:09:43A suit. Stand right on the edge.
01:09:46We just can get right on the edge. Just move the little ones.
01:09:55Sir.
01:09:56One more time.
01:09:58Yeah!
01:10:01Yeah.
01:10:03Yeah.
01:10:09Our last kick, I believe, okay, flying roundhouse kick is what we call this.
01:10:17If you guys want to test out how difficult this may be, at your leisure, just try and
01:10:24pick one foot up and come across in a roundhouse formation.
01:10:28And remember that when you do that, you have one leg on the ground, okay?
01:10:32This case, there won't be any feet on the ground.
01:10:36Mr. Gannon will be totally in the air, and Mr. Kovacs should be on his back.
01:10:43Mr. Corn, can I get a volunteer from the audience?
01:10:46I don't know.
01:10:47Do we have a volunteer?
01:10:48Right there, this young man.
01:10:49Yes, sir.
01:10:54What do you mind Mr. Kovacs' shoulders?
01:10:56I just need to get to that.
01:11:12It's just never good enough, is it?
