01:03a team of police professionals in north dallas has one goal take down online predators before
01:11they harm a real child child predators are everywhere online predators pose the biggest danger to
01:19america's children today kids are being targeted at an alarming rate this team is opening its case
01:26files for the first time to show you how it tracks them down
01:31all right he's coming this way and brings them to justice by any means necessary
01:40this is detective tony godwin and his team is the predator hunters
01:47all right tps 101 i think i got him
01:51may 2020 a police helicopter tracks a pickup truck through plano texas we are still headed southbound
01:59into the complex the predator behind the wheel believes he's catfished this woman to supply him
02:06with a minor for sex and i started reporting him he thinks he's meeting her nine-year-old niece
02:17he has no idea that he's the one being catfished and that detective tony godwin and his team are about
02:24to take him down
02:31this guy right here john ansolette this is a case i will never ever forget he used a dating app
02:39to groom
02:40an adult woman who was there just looking for a normal relationship he flipped that into a conversation
02:46about engaging in sex with children to catch this guy i had to catfish the catfisher
03:01the case begins in january of 2020 at its heart is a 44 year old woman named shonda kulig she
03:09reported
03:09a man named sven she met on a dating site as a potential child predator i invite shonda to my
03:16office
03:16to discuss this and little do i know this will be one of the most complex cases i've ever worked
03:23how did you meet this guy sven yeah i met him on tinder and we started just kind of chatting
03:31he's very flirtatious
03:35then he started sending me like a lot of pictures which i thought was nice because a lot of guys
03:39don't
03:40do that he just looks like an everyday normal dude young athletic good looking
03:51everything up at this point is looking really somewhat normal to me but then tell me about this
03:59and then all of a sudden it kind of took another really weird turn he started talking about how he
04:07was hooking up with his mom i was sitting there in shock like i have no clue what is happening
04:13with
04:14this guy right now at first i was wondering like is this a fantasy but then he went to another
04:18level
04:20he said i know i will my real daughter and when i have one and he said at 11 to
04:2713 they were so horny
04:29and then he said yes i have let one me that was 12 i'm a daddy to them and he
04:35was like can you
04:36kiss the 11 year olds and help me train them i sat there shocked him with what the actual
04:44heck is happening right now if he's saying these things is he doing these things i'm thinking how
04:51can i hunt the sucker down i just flat out asked him what's your last name and he just tells
05:00me
05:00melanson so i was like perfect i'm downloading our chat i'm downloading the pictures that he's sending
05:07and then he tells me he has a friend that he would love to introduce me to his name was
05:15john
05:18and then my phone is ringing
05:25i knew when i heard the phone ring to grab my other phone and start recording
05:29i don't know how the heck i need to do that oh i love your voice oh my god yeah
05:35you have a great phone
05:36voice he says hey this is john i'm the friend of spin and then his next words were like oh
05:45my god your
05:46voice is so sexy uh yeah uh this totally knew this is going to be different
05:53so it kind of sounded kind of interesting though didn't it it's interesting yeah definitely so you
06:00you're ready to be trained though aren't you
06:03yeah you have a nice sexy uh little baby girl voice
06:10the creepiness of his voice is a first thought honestly it made me never want to be on the phone
06:16again for a while yeah i know how difficult that call really was for you uh i could just see
06:21your
06:21reaction to it what happened next after the call at this point is when i i contacted
06:28the police i'm really proud of what you did and perseverance you had trying to figure this out
06:34you'd be surprised how many people don't do that
06:39i begin my investigation into sven mallinson and his friend john it's happened so fast so quickly with
06:46two predators with the same woman i'm wondering have i latched on to some sort of
06:50underground perverted network of people the reality is that sven and john are grooming shonda because
06:59that's the tactic they groom the adult first so they get access to the child i've got names i have
07:06phone numbers for both of these guys i give all of this information and intelligence that i have right
07:11now to tady guthrie she's the crime analyst in my unit and we're going to build this case together
07:21tony's given me a number for john and with that number i'm able to serve a subpoena to at&t
07:27for their
07:28records at&t does come back with records on that number for a john anslett
07:37i run john anslett through some police databases that i have what i found was really disturbing
07:44in 1997 detectives from dallas pd arrested anslett for aggravated sexual assault of a child
07:52he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of assault causing bodily injury so now check out sven mallinson i
08:00find out that his phone number is a voice over internet line which means that it's using internet
08:06protocol instead of a cellular network this makes it hard to trace but not impossible his internet ip
08:13address comes back to an address in potsboro but shockingly it's not just an address because it's
08:21actually john anslett's address we're not looking for sven and john john is the guy and i think sven
08:31is not anyone of importance to us we dig deeper into sven malinson's background we find no link
08:40whatsoever between him and john anslett john anslett used sven malinson's name together with photos of
08:48another man to create the dating profile that's super rare i've come across only one other predator in
08:55my entire career who's done that the fact that he victimized a whole nother person that
09:00had nothing to do with this is double trouble this guy john anslett and he's a pretty smart predator
09:07i have a plan to catch him the last way he would ever expect i'm going to catfish the catfisher
09:15shonda gives tony permission to use her cell phone tony picks up the conversation with john where she left
09:22it the predator messages around the clock seven days a week so i continue to exchange messages back
09:30and forth with john he quickly turns the conversation really sexual about minors
09:38this is my opportunity to lure him in when john replies you're going to see what his true intentions
09:44really were from the start
09:49can i love her and have her sexually how many people are going to offer up a child that they
09:56have access to
09:57and so i have to reply and be very cautious in what i say
10:03this is the beginning of a long waiting game over the next two months tony posing as shonda exchanges
10:11thousands of messages with john finally monday april 27th all my patience pays off john sends a message
10:23i want to make love to her on the first meeting holy moly he's now making it very clear that
10:30he wants
10:30the niece that's really huge i have to give him something really plausible i say i'm dog sitting for
10:38a girlfriend in plano i'm planning to keep my niece overnight on friday
10:46this has taken me a couple of months to get to this point and i'm super excited because on friday
10:51may the 8th i'm going to get my chance to arrest this guy and get him into custody this takedown
10:57it's
10:57going to happen in plano texas this takedown is really unprecedented covert surveillance air
11:05surveillance takedown team there's so many moving parts all right dps 101 i think i got him
11:17at 2 36 p.m i get notified that ansolid has left his property and over white dodge ram left
11:24lane i've
11:25got a live feed of this from a police helicopter dps 101 no change southbound 75 left lane i'm glued
11:32to
11:32my phone watching this white truck drive southbound on an eight lane highway all right he's setting up
11:37to exit park stand by for direction when ansolid's about a mile away the worst case happens lost digital
11:45for a second here at 15th and uh 75 i'm flipping out at this point
11:52it feels like 12 months is is going by in slow motion it's agonizing
12:04here he is 10-4 sir thank you i got him eastbound 15th
12:09ansolid keeps moving he's very very close to our takedown location he looks like he's going to go
12:15uh eastbound on 14th from p avenue and then out of nowhere he takes a quick right into this industrial
12:23area i took a right turn he's behind a cement truck i don't know what this guy's doing he's getting
12:32out
12:32i got a white male gray lossy shirt red shorts billard drive m-i-l-l-a-r-d drive
12:44tony's takedown of john ansolid hangs in the balance after the predator makes an unscheduled stop
12:51i don't have a clue what ansolid's doing he gets out of his truck and he walks around to the
12:55passenger
12:56side i'm thinking the worst case scenario possible he's got a long gun pistols plenty of
13:02ammo and he's setting up to hurt one of my guys he had shorts on look like he was carrying
13:09a pair of
13:09pants ansolid changes clothes puts pants on and immediately drives away all right dps
13:17101 he's on the move again it's like he's going to face back northbound and head out if you look
13:22at
13:22this for what it is this is a grown man who's getting himself dressed up for a meeting to have
13:28sex with a nine-year-old female all right we are still headed southbound into the complex
13:36when ansolid pulls into the apartment complex he literally drives right in front of me and has
13:42no idea that i'm there okay we got him in the complex plano squad cars head on with him right
13:48now plano squad cars head on with him right now when a marked police car from plano pd drives right
13:56past
13:57him i think he's going to punch the gas and haul butt out of there the squad car does a
14:05u-turn
14:05it activates their lights and sirens and they initiate the stop
14:18officers just descend on his vehicle and they pull him out
14:23i'll explain it to you in just a second i was coming to see a girl you are yes
14:29when ansolid says he's just there to see a girl he knows he's caught but he somehow
14:35wants to portray to these cops that hey this is just a very innocent thing like what is going on
14:41i'm sure tony's wrapped up but uh that's all y'all need from us we're going to clear

14:52i have my wallet and everything in that car hey his wallet's in the car and my phone his
14:59wallet his phone are in the car my hope is that every bit of evidence that has built this case
15:04is right there on ansolid's phone and that's something that we'll do a forensic exam on
15:09can i have my phone also uh you'll get that over there
15:14a forensic search of ansolid's phone reveals that he used fenn malinson's name
15:19and photos of another man he admits that he did speak to a woman online to speaking sexually to this
15:26woman and talking sexually with her about her niece but he claims he was never going to do anything
15:33at all about that i have my report here and i can tell you specifically what he said
15:39i have a lady who is sending me sexual pictures of her i sent no sexual pictures to her i'm
15:45very
15:45clear on meeting her today that my intentions were only to meet her no john i have four months of
15:53communications with this guy that speak very very differently as to the position he's taking
16:08if there's one thing that i could take away from this case is i'm going to talk about shonda her
16:13bravery her vulnerability her ability to put herself on a different level to say this is wrong and i'm
16:20going to do something about it we always see and hear and preach see something say something and she
16:25did
16:30stupid i knew it may 9th 2023 as soon as i part in tony grills an online predator
16:40you spoke very openly and very candidly that you've had a sexual encounter with another kid
16:46what will a lie detector test reveal about his sickening admission are you withholding information
16:53about meeting a minor for sex
16:59russell stedman this guy looks like every normal dude on the street this guy can write a master class
17:05on how to groom a child he did everything he could to communicate and have sex with a 13 year
17:10old
17:10kid but at the end of the day i was able to get this guy into custody
17:21the case starts on christmas eve 2022 even though it's christmas time i'm proactively hunting for
17:28predators on an app called chat hour
17:3210 hours a free site that anybody can download it allows you to enter chat rooms
17:37based on a category that you have an interest in i established a new profile for the name bailey
17:44a 13 year old female from north texas i list her age on the platform as being 80 years old
17:51it's
17:51definitely an icebreaker for sure clearly i'm not 80 i'm 13. tony cannot reveal bailey's profile picture
17:59he uses it today in active investigations i find a room called flirting and i just wait
18:08so within minutes i get a private message from a user and his name is dive in it
18:14i look at this guy's profile picture he is definitely a middle-aged man
18:21i reply back yeah i do i'm 13 is that okay he comes at me with this are you alone
18:30just wondering
18:31who's with you why would he want to know this he really wants to know who's paying attention
18:36i tell him my mom and my aunt are here and my little cousin
18:41this guy really has moved to the top of the list for me i want to figure out what's going
18:44on with him
18:49what i need is just a little bit of proof that he's into more than just sending a dirty message
18:53to a kid
18:55the best way for me to make that connection is what happens if i ghost him it's christmas eve
19:00and i can just leave it alone and then come back and say i was with family
19:07i stay off chat hour for three weeks the next time i log in it's january 12th of 2023
19:15and within 20 minutes dive in it he's right back to messaging me
19:20he's definitely into this i start re-engaging with him
19:26and then he tells me how he was divorced in 2019 and he wished we could talk more he's classically
19:33using a couple of different techniques let's love bomb this kid but then also let's guilt trip this kid
19:41reality is that kind of techniques works very well with children because they don't have the
19:46bandwidth to really detect that manipulation that's going on and so it's effective i'm a hundred percent
19:53positive this guy's a predator
19:58tony hunts for clues that can unmask a predator with the username dive in it
20:05i don't have an awful lot to go on i've got his username dive in it i've got these three
20:11different
20:11photographs of this guy on his chat hour profile but i need a little more
20:18i offer up a cell phone number and see if he wants to move over to regular sms messaging
20:27and much to my surprise he's okay
20:32now i've got this phone number i can now figure out is russell a real name
20:38i've got the best person on the planet that can help me do that deep dive i reach out to
20:43my colleague
20:44taby guthrie
20:49tony gave me a first name and a phone number and my tools gave me exactly what i needed
20:55a full name for this guy russell wayne stedman
21:02his social media has just very normal photos he looks kind of like a regular average joe
21:09just from what his conversations with tony have been we know that this guy is dangerous so it's
21:15important for us to go ahead and look at his criminal history and he does have two convictions
21:21that i can see and none of those actually have anything to do with crimes against children they're
21:29all things like theft so i really need to tell tony about this
21:40the longer this chat goes on the more frequent stedman is messaging me
21:47the disturbing part is that he puts pressure on her don't tell anybody
21:53and then stedman drops a bombshell on me
22:02this guy tells me that he's had a three-month sexual relationship with a 16 year old kid
22:07holy moly this is crazy this changes everything for me even though stedman doesn't have a prior
22:13conviction for something like this it's really grounds for serious concern for me because he could have
22:19gone unnoticed and nobody knows about this case yet i'm really worried
22:29stedman ramps it up he wants to use her bedroom oh my god really i respond and i tell him
22:38that she
22:39works on tuesdays wednesdays and thursdays he doesn't miss a beat
22:46that tells me that his impulse control is gone i might not have much time to get this guy before
22:53he grabs a real kid or does something with a real kid i text back and tell him tomorrow totally
22:59fine
23:06so the meet is set for may 9th my team and i are in place by 6 45 in the
23:10morning we are set up an
23:12online solicitation of a minor case russell wayne stedman has agreed to show up to engage in sexual
23:19activities with what he believes to be a 14 year old girl i'm at the back of the complex where
23:26i have
23:26a visual of where stedman is going to park with me on this takedown is jen mullican from fbi i'm
23:33trying
23:34to take the case federal to have it charged as an attempted enticement case versus an online
23:39solicitation which is a state charge it's a different level of proof he has to show up in
23:44order to be charged federally but it also is a major sentencing difference i'm continually texting him
23:52letting him know hey my mom just left he replies back i just don't want us to get in trouble
24:00immediately i get a sick feel in my gut like oh this guy's gonna back out
24:10tony sends a message saying don't bother coming that's absolutely textbook it's it's
24:15giving him an out and oftentimes they don't want to possibly lose a real thing so they show up
24:257 33 a.m i get a notification from the team on the outside that says hey we see his
24:31truck
24:337 35 a.m tony's team lies in wait for russell stedman
24:39okay looks like our subject just arrived any park yes next to the tree by the mailbox
24:47he's getting in he's out
24:57i'm not sure i'm busting here put your hands on the road hang on
25:12officers are able to get onto that car and they find a bunch of great evidence they find his cell
25:18phone they find condoms and viagra the cell phones unlocked and on the screen are the messages
25:25with tony's undercover persona that's the greatest evidence you can possibly wish for
25:33you stupid i knew it as soon as i park in
25:48i want to have a conversation with you what brought you here today
25:58something stupid and he's thinking am i going to lie am i going to tell the truth
26:04then tell me the truth you were going to come have sex with this kid today to be honest i
26:10was hoping
26:10yes yeah first she told me 16 then 18 and then i found out she's 14. when did you find
26:21that out
26:22last couple of days okay obviously this guy's lying i'm never going to let him get away with this
26:29you spoke very openly and very candidly that you've had a sexual encounter with another kid
26:35oh i used that as a kind of enticement i guess but no so you're saying that never happened no
26:44sir
26:45one of the things that we do russell to to validate that we have a what we call a tactical
26:53polygraph
26:53to prove that you're not a hands-on offender is that something you might be willing to do sure
27:00i call in a friend of mine with the department of public safety he's one of the early guys that
27:07i cut
27:07my teeth with when i was a new internet crimes against children guy he is one of the best interviewers
27:14uh that i've ever seen so put your hands like this over your head a little bit perfect this one's
27:23going to go around your alley
27:27are you sitting down
27:31yes in your entire life have you ever broken any law no all right now what about um have you
27:40had sexual
27:40contact with a minor who lived with no okay what about this are you withholding information about
27:49meeting a minor for sex no do you ever travel and just talk to him like he didn't actually meet
27:56me no okay
28:02this test is not complete okay you can relax
28:05yeah we're all done okay the results were inconclusive i do as much investigating as i possibly
28:12can to determine if that claim of sex with a 16 year old was legit and i'm not able to
28:19find anything to
28:20substantiate that however based on my investigation up to this point on september 23rd of 2023 stedman is
28:28indicted federally
28:38the stedman case highlights just how devious a predator can be when they groom a child
28:43children can be easily manipulated a predator will gain their trust and build a relationship
28:48with them over time fortunately stedman wasn't talking to a real child he was talking to me
28:56a predator
28:57august 2017 tony is in a race against time to snare a predator teacher before the start of the school
29:04year
29:05we've got to get moving before this guy does some real harm i'm detective godwin i have a search
29:11warrant for your residence tony and his team discover the predator is a prolific collector of illegal material
29:19but they are about to stumble upon something that none of them are prepared for it was the most
29:25disturbing thing i have ever seen in my entire life
29:33kirk kessler this guy was downloading so much horrific child sex abuse material
29:40the scary part was that he's a teacher with special education students
29:44my team and i we had to act super fast to get him into custody and deny him access to
29:49any kids
29:55this case kicks off about a month earlier when i get contacted by two of my colleagues from different
30:00agencies they tell me that they have a suspected ip address that's targeted in my city that's
30:06downloaded about 192 child sex abuse material files and then i pull five of those files out just
30:12randomly to kind of spot check and verify if what that is is actually child sex abuse material and it
30:19is
30:20my next course of actions determine does this ip address actually belong to someone that lives in
30:26my jurisdiction it came back to a suspect and his name is kirk kessler
30:32i start to do a social media dive on him and it shows that he's a special education teacher
30:37it absolutely rockets that case to the top of my stack of work and there's no waiting
30:49the school where kessler teaches is out for the summer right now it's july 19th school starts
30:56on august 17th that gives me four weeks figure out where this guy is track him down and get him
31:04into
31:04custody before school starts so that's a tight deadline for a really complex investigation we've
31:10got to get moving before this guy does some real harm
31:19tony has only four weeks to track down kirk kessler before he returns to a classroom full of
31:25vulnerable children for me and my team the clock is ticking i want to find out as much as i
31:32can
31:32about kirk kessler so i reach out to my colleague mark castile in our intelligence unit to help me
31:39i run a dmv check on kessler and i find out that he's got a silver chevy truck a black
31:46lexus and a
31:47red cryster vehicle i learned that he is a divorcee that he has three grown children and then i find
31:54out
31:54a real bombshell i locate a 1998 report from garner north carolina showing that he had been
32:02investigated for child porn a person reported to the police department that they'd actually seen
32:07child porn on kessler's laptop garner pd went out and investigated it unfortunately they were not able
32:15to locate in child porn or any reason that they could arrest him so he walked away
32:21this just adds to my stress level because of this history that marcus found out i need to move on
32:27this guy right now now that i know who kirk kessler is and where he works i've got to put
32:40a surveillance
32:40team on his house i know that he's got three vehicles and a boat that are registered to him
32:45so the surveillance team goes out there get some photographs and this is what they give me
32:51what's missing is one of his vehicles so what i do is reach out to the school district what they
32:57tell
32:57me is that he's out of state he's not due back until august 16th the troubling part is the new
33:04semester
33:04starts the next day august 17th i have no authority whatsoever or jurisdiction to arrest him when he's
33:12out of state i need to get to kessler before the start of that class on the 17th which means
33:18i have
33:19to arrest him on august 16th today's big day this is our takedown of kirk kessler the problem is we
33:33don't know if he's there he's supposed to be coming back from vacation he has no idea that we're looking
33:38at him i've got a team set up at his house and they're there to tell me hey do you
33:43see him or not
33:44we're on a window we got a couple hours and the next thing you know it's going to be dark
33:47it's going
33:48to make things much harder for us i can't run the risk of this guy slipping through and even
33:53attempting to try to go to work tomorrow now this is a two-prong takedown one is a team that's
33:59going
33:59to arrest kessler i'm part of that team two is a search team that's going to find that evidence
34:05we can't allow kessler to delete evidence and so we want to make sure that he is secure
34:10so the other team can find all of his electronics
34:22hello i arrive at kessler's house the lights are on inside i know it's go time
34:28hey sir hey how are you what's your name kirk kirk i'm detective godwin i have a search warrant for
34:34your
34:35residence there's going to be some other guys coming in here we will uh we will kind of get
34:40kicking i'll kind of tell you what's going on why i have the warrant and all that oh you have
34:45a warrant
34:45i have a search warrant here can i see yep kessler is coming off very arrogant it's kind of annoying
34:53you've been home all day or what yes what do you do for a living
34:56i'm teaching how long you've been a teacher uh 31 years three decades of teaching special needs kids
35:06in my mind there are potential victims all over the place i'm really taken back by that
35:13did you have any reason to believe why we would be here not really okay i see right through kessler
35:19he knows exactly why we are there i work what's called internet crimes against children
35:25and that's what brought me here today you have the right to remain silent and not make any statement
35:31at all that any statement you make maybe uses evidence against you at your trial do you understand
35:35that yes do you knowingly intelligently and voluntarily waive those so that we can have a
35:40conversation no i'd like to get a little off okay no sweat he's not having a conversation with me
35:47but we're not done we still have to search this entire house can they call a lawyer uh you can
35:53call
35:54a lawyer but that's not going to happen until we're done okay so once we're done you call whoever
35:59you want okay all right so she's going to get some pictures i'm going to get my big ugly mug
36:04out of the
36:04way and we'll go from there detective tony godwin and his team are searching the house of kirk kessler
36:15the reason we start in his bedroom is because it's very obvious this guy lives basically 24 7 out of
36:21this
36:21room it's dirty it looks like the sheets haven't been washed in a decade maybe it stinks it is
36:30disgusting i see in the master bedroom a laptop with the lid down and i walk over to it i
36:37open it up
36:38and there's a child sex abuse material file playing but nothing can prepare them for what they discover
36:46next well there's a closet with bifold doors inside kessler's master bedroom one of my colleagues opens
36:55up these bifold doors inside is a child size sex doll
37:05the doll has hair like a wig on but it's completely new
37:10it was the most disturbing thing i've ever seen in my entire life we found loads of children's
37:19underwear clearly sized to the size of that sex doll there were outfits and dresses and all kinds of
37:27stuff i've run so many other warrants where there are certain things you find but nothing to this level of
37:34depravity kessler is done this dude is toast tony scans kessler's devices for child sexual abuse material
37:49my preview tools complete their scan and it finds 661 contraband files of child sex abuse material

38:17morning it is a great feeling we seize all of his electronic devices and we send him in for a
38:24forensic exam
38:26we get kessler to the police department and he's already invoked his miranda right meaning he's not
38:31going to talk to us without a lawyer and that's totally fine that's his right i have another way
38:35to get to hear what he's talking about kessler calls his son from jail
38:42if i don't make bail tomorrow i'm going to need you to take the dogs to the humane society
38:49my lawyer said it's 50 50 right now whether i'll make bail or not
38:58well why would you not make bail because in these kind of cases they sometimes don't have bail
39:07i'm going to do some other things like sell the house for me uh do texas state retirements or
39:14uh retirement income what it sounds like to me in that call is a guy getting all of his personal
39:23affairs in order as though he is never returning home i contact kessler school to tell him what's
39:30happened and they suspend him it's a good thing they did suspend him because a few days later a
39:36judge grants kessler bail until a hearing can be held kessler's freedom it doesn't last long on
39:43september 8th i get the results back from the forensic exam and they find loads of child sex abuse material
39:50the forensics team finds over 10 000 images and 3 000 videos of child sexual abuse material on kessler's
40:01devices kessler shared this c sam electronically across state lines now federal prosecutors charge
40:08him with transporting and shipping child pornography i send officers out to arrest him based on his bail
40:15conditions he's required to be at home so they're going to go straight away to his house knock on
40:19the door and take him into custody hey hey kirk how you doing man can i come and talk to
40:24you real quick
40:25absolutely hey uh i'm sure you're aware that you're going to have a warrant for your arrest okay i
40:31didn't know that yeah i thought i was having a hood there's no indictment or anything no not for a
40:35federal
40:35warrant go ahead and spin around for me and let me put the cuffs on you i appreciate your cooperation

40:47i'm delighted that kirk kessler is going to spend the rest of his hopefully natural life behind bars
40:53in prison a later investigation concludes there is no evidence that kirk kessler abused children from
41:00the school where he taught the case reminds us that perpetrators come in all forms and all walks of
41:17life kessler worked with vulnerable students and had done so for years a message to you predators
