00:00The Giants have played six baseball games.
00:02What have we got?
00:04We've got Netflix.
00:06We've got Weird Days Off.
00:09We've got only one run in three home games.
00:13We've got Tony Vitello blaming himself for a fire and brimstone speech
00:18with players going, we didn't even notice.
00:23And then we've got Matt Chapman telling Casey Schmidt twice,
00:28catch the bleeping ball.
00:30And a 2-4 record.
00:32Six games in.
00:33So how are we doing?
00:34We're interesting.
00:36We're entertaining.
00:37That's for sure.
00:38You've got an offense that's been mostly absent, save one good game in San Diego.
00:44And other than that, it should just be kind of a ho-hum start to the year,
00:48but it's not.
00:48Jim Bowden already came on the show.
00:51He was the one who earlier this week said that Tony Vitello is embarrassing the Giants.
00:56Pressed him on it a little bit.
00:58His answer was kind of like, that's my take.
01:02You should listen to the whole interview if you want to zero in on that word.
01:06And I'm thinking to myself, well, no, we're not zeroing in on that word,
01:11but you use that word, and I don't really find it embarrassing,
01:15but he explained where he was coming from and why he wanted to use that word.
01:19I think that's too big of a word, but I will buy that, like we're talking about right here,
01:25there's a lot going on.
01:28And I agree with you.
01:29They're interesting.
01:30Yeah.
01:31I would just save the word embarrassing for things that are really like, oh my God, that's so embarrassing.
01:37Like if you make a mistake, I mentioned Bill Buckner earlier.
01:40That's, I guess, kind of embarrassing because it's a play you make 999 times out of a thousand,
01:45but it's just a physical mistake on a ball that's spinning.
01:49And, you know, it's not like psycho Steve Lyons dropping his pants at first base
01:54and forgetting that he's actually in a major league stadium.
01:57That's embarrassing.
01:58You use the word.
01:59You use the word.
02:00I don't ever, ever, ever, ever find physical mistakes embarrassing.
02:05I mentioned the Canseco ball off the head for a home run.
02:09Well, but that's quirky because it hit him in the head.
02:11But it's still like, yeah, we're human beings.
02:14You know what I mean?
02:15I've seen professional golfers shank shots.
02:18It's not, I don't find physical stuff embarrassing.
02:22Outfielder catches fly ball, thinks it's out number three and throws it into the crowd.
02:26That's embarrassing.
02:27That's embarrassing.
02:28That's more of a mental mistake though.
02:30By the way, coming to town tonight are the Mets.
02:33And they've had an interesting start as well with some stuff like that.
02:40Not knowing how many outs there are.
02:43You know, like just, they've had a few weird plays that show that you've got players
02:50that just aren't thinking their way through the diamond.
02:54That's, at the big league level, embarrassing.
02:57Yes.
02:57I don't think physical mistakes are embarrassing.
03:00They can be very frustrating.
03:03And I think that that's all that happened yesterday with Chapman and Schmidt.
03:09Now, I guess the question would be, and I know that there's no way for them to give a straight
03:13answer on this.
03:14By the time they get to the dugout, everybody has calmed down.
03:18By the time they get to the media, they're already prepared with their, hey, there ain't nothing to see here.
03:23I always wonder, when you do that, zero to 60, in a pretty quick second, is there something underlying?
03:33In other words, if I'm that mad at Casey, and maybe it was in the fifth inning simply because it
03:39had already happened in the first inning.
03:41And maybe that was the underlying issue.
03:43But if Chapman is over there at third base, and let's think about it, he's been throwing all spring to
03:50Devers, there's Bryce Eldridge, now there's Casey Schmidt.
03:55There might have been a little sprinkling of Encarnacion and Arise.
03:58And if he's thinking to himself, I can't believe they put Casey over there.
04:02That's not the dude?
04:03Yep.
04:03That's not the dude.
04:04And then the dude misses too, that can lead to, dude, catch the bleeping ball.
04:10Absolutely.
04:10And I'm not comparing this to the Jordan Poole-Draymon situation because that was a punch and this was just
04:16a sentence.
04:16But you can't tell me that that was the first time Draymon was irked by Jordan Poole.
04:22Hell no.
04:23Hell no.
04:24And you can only say that now because it's been a few years.
04:27But I agree with you completely because when you say it, it sounds like victim shaming.
04:32And I'm not.
04:33But you're not.
04:34And you're a thousand percent right.
04:36And we know this for a fact.
04:38Jordan Poole, there was a rub there.
04:41There was a rub there.
04:42And even if you go to the Debo, Tabor Pepper, which was really the Jake Moody, and Tabor stepped in,
04:48he probably was frustrated by missed kicks before he got to that spot where the kick was missed.
04:53And so I don't know if that's a breaking point, but sometimes little things cause you to boil over
05:00because there's already been 71 other little things.
05:03Okay.
05:04Let's address this for a second.
05:05813.
05:07Physical mistakes are absolutely embarrassing.
05:08You airball a free throw as a pro.
05:11That's embarrassing.
05:13I'll allow that.
05:14Yeah.
05:14I'll allow that.
05:16I'll allow that.
05:18But not in the same way I find the other things to be embarrassing.
05:23In other words, if I don't know the rules, if I don't know how many outs there are, that means
05:27that I have lacked preparation,
05:29either for the game or for that moment.
05:33If I make a physical mistake and it's a really, really bad one as a pro, I guess you could
05:39refer to it as embarrassing.
05:41You'd probably have to ask the person who is or isn't embarrassed.
05:45But I set that apart, even the silly ones like that, to me that is less offensive as a professional
05:52than somebody who is lazy or unprepared.
05:56I would agree, but I do think some physical mistakes.
05:59I think the airballed free throw is one.
06:01The missed dunk on a breakaway is another.
06:04And the one I think I threw out yesterday is football player is at the 10, is at the 5,
06:10and drops the ball at the 1 before going into the end zone.
06:13That's embarrassing.
06:13See, I don't feel that's a physical mistake.
06:16That's a mental mistake.
06:17Physically, he dropped the ball.
06:18Right, but he was trying to drop the ball.
06:21So, like, he didn't fumble it.
06:24He just dropped it.
06:26He just mistimed his whatever.
06:28I hear what you're saying.
06:30Either way, I would chalk it up as embarrassing.
06:32Yeah.
06:33Unlike if you are the gunner on the punt team, or if you're the punt return team, and the ball
06:39happens to just bounce and hit you, and it's a live ball,
06:42That's not embarrassing.
06:43That's just football.
06:445-1-0, striking out in beer league softball is embarrassing.
06:47Great call.
06:48See, I disagree.
06:49Striking out in beer league softball is part of the deal.
06:53It's slow pitch.
06:54It's beer league.
06:55You're drunk.
06:56You shouldn't be drunk.
06:57You could be.
06:58You're allowed to be.
06:59I mean, there are a lot of people who shouldn't be drunk, but they are.
07:01The only thing more embarrassing than striking out in beer league softball, it's taking a walk.
07:07That's more embarrassing than striking out.
07:10You're up there trying to coax a walk.
07:12Come on.
07:13What are we doing?
07:14I'll give you one.
07:16So, I went to Stanford basketball camp as a kid, and it was the last day.
07:23So, it was the day that the parents all come pick you up.
07:25So, we're playing a five-on-five outdoor courts, asphalt, and the stands are packed.
07:34Everybody's parents' sleeping bags were all sitting over there on the side.
07:37We're all getting picked up, but it's the last game, and I think we might have been playing for something,
07:43whatever mythical championship they make up at Stanford basketball camp.
07:47And the opponent is on the free throw line.
07:52And I'm out there at half court.
07:54I'm not lined up in the lane or on the key.
07:58And my coach says, oh, we want you in there.
08:01So, after the first free throw, I want you to go get in there.
08:05So, first free throw goes up.
08:06Can't remember if it missed or make.
08:07Doesn't matter.
08:08And I was one of the nominees for Mr. Hustle.
08:13I like to hustle.
08:14So, I take off, and I'm getting in the lane, and I run in there, and right about the top
08:19of the key, I hit a pothole.
08:21Oh, down goes Willard.
08:25I trip, and I do a head first significant slide on asphalt right into the middle of the key.
08:35Oh.
08:36Three guys on each side, got a person on the free throw line, and an official, and everyone's parents slide
08:46right in.
08:48And official was about to give the ball to the guy shooting the free throws.
08:51Instead, turns around, wheels, looks at me, and goes,
08:55Of course, the safe call.
08:57Whole gym breaking out into laughter.
09:00That was embarrassing.
09:01That is embarrassing.
09:02That was really embarrassing.
09:03And that's a physical error.
09:05So, although mentally, you probably should have just jogged.
09:08I don't know what all the hustle's all about there.
09:12Fake hustle.
09:13Stanford basketball camp.
09:15But when it goes 0-60, I feel like there's potentially something that's already there.
09:21Yeah.
09:21What about this?
09:23We have an example.
09:24Grandy, what is this 0-60 example?
09:26Yeah.
09:27Do you guys remember like a year and a half ago when Cal hosted college game day when Miami was
09:32in town?
09:32Of course.
09:33Yeah.
09:34So, Stiney and Goo were talking about that, and I think you're going to hear the question,
09:38but the simple question from Stiney was, is anybody going to go to game day?
09:41Okay.
09:41And here's how it went on Stiney and Goo a year and a half ago.
09:44Anybody going out there tomorrow morning at 6, be honest.
09:47Come on.
09:48Are you serious?
09:49I believe Evan's going.
09:50I might be there.
09:52Okay.
09:53Why wouldn't I be there?
09:54What would I be doing?
09:55Bet me.
09:56I get up at 5, 15, 5, 20.
09:58Then why do you get here at 930 every day?
10:00Because I'm coming from SAC, you ass.
10:02At two hours.
10:04Sometimes three.
10:05And then I got to deal with you when I come in here.
10:08Damn.
10:09You try it.
10:11Two hours to come see you and deal with your crap?
10:15I should be in a mental ward.
10:18I'm sorry, Stiney.
10:20It was a long commute today, buddy.
10:22Don't poke me, man.
10:23I'm just kidding.
10:24Jesus.
10:25I'm thinking about my life, man.
10:27Two, three hours to get to you daily.
10:30That is so good.
10:31I actually remember it.
10:33I do remember this now.
10:34I remember it.
10:34I remember that now.
10:36And was there something underlying?
10:38Yeah.
10:39Yeah, there's Stiney and Goo.
10:41He's tired of getting pushed around is what it is, the underlying part of it.
10:47I'm tired of getting pushed around.
10:48So they got there based off of the very probing question.
10:52Is anybody going?
10:54Anybody going?
10:55Well, and Stiney not believing that Goo was going to go.
10:58Because he's not.
10:59Yeah.
11:00Did he?
11:00Of course not.
11:03I mean.
11:04You got to get to college game day if you get the chance.
11:06That thing is fun.
11:07Only because he's in North Carolina.
11:10Has Goo ever shown up at anything?
11:14He showed up to your Super Bowl party.
11:16I know.
11:16I'm kidding.
11:17Watch Party Willard.
11:18I'm kidding.
11:18He does.
11:19He shows up to a lot.
11:20But he also misses a lot.
11:21And he also shows up at the neighbor's house when he tries to go to your house.
11:24Or the lovely Christie's house.
11:25Right.
11:26That's very true.
11:26Shout out three doors down.
11:28Not the band, but Guru.
11:29Not the band.
11:31Right.
11:31No.
11:32I actually know, and I could coach him through this, I feel.
11:36I know why Goo doesn't end up showing up at a lot of the stuff that he says he's going
11:42to show up at.
11:42That he wants to be a people pleaser so damn bad.
11:46And so he says yes to everything.
11:48Half of which he cannot.
11:50He physically cannot go to.
11:53And so when he says, as soon as this show's over, Willard, I'm coming straight to Splash
11:58and I'll see you.
12:00You and I both damn well know.
12:037% chance.
12:04Long shot, yeah.
12:05If that.
12:06If that.
12:07Because he's got all those games going on.
12:08Because he watches everything.
12:09He's just, there's a lot of stuff.
12:12I have a little bit of that.
12:14I am prone to over promise and under deliver.
12:19I used to be the guy who would give you the definite maybe.
12:23Oh yeah.
12:23Or the, I'll see if I can make it by.
12:26Well, I take that as a hard no.
12:27Right.
12:27When someone says that to me, especially in California, our culture is such that that's
12:32a definite, you're not coming.
12:34Yeah.
12:35Put me down as a definite maybe.
12:36Yeah.
12:37You know, zero.
12:38That's like doubtful in the NFL.
12:39If you're doubtful, you don't play.
12:41No chance.
12:42So just call me out officially.
12:43But as I've gotten older now, it's like, I'm not going, I'm not going anywhere.
12:47I'm not going anywhere.
12:49I'm going home basically.
12:51Although I did go to Guru's, I think it was going away party for his daughter in Sacramento.
12:57I know I drove to one of his functions out there.
13:00Did you really?
13:00Yeah.
13:01Told him I'd go and I just went.
13:02You know, one of those times where I might've needed a little time in the car.
13:07Might've needed a little drive time.
13:09How was it?
13:09Awesome.
13:10Great.
13:10Really fun.
13:11Yeah.
13:11Anyway, I just, that, that would be my question for Chapman and Schmidt.
13:17If we were actually allowed to get a real answer.
13:20Is there something underlying that, that led to that?
13:24But outside of that, I mean, look at what we're sitting here talking about today.
13:28I just, I, I don't know.
13:31I don't know.
13:32Jim Bowden thought so.
13:33Evan thought so.
13:35Like, this is quote, not good.
13:37You know, this is not, and nobody said it was like this huge problem, but this is not
13:43what you want the Giants to be talking about right now.
13:46And while I can sort of agree with that, it's not the narrative that the Giants want out
13:51there right now.
13:52I largely think, um, we have gotten sensitive to a point where things like this, they grab
14:01our attention because it's the San Francisco Giants and because it's on the internet, but
14:06things like that happen in your family and your workplace 28 times a day, 28 times a day.
14:15Depending on the level of, you know, the animosity, and I'm not saying Chapman was just completely
14:21furious, but he said it twice and he used a profanity and it's game six.
14:26So I think about the backstory there.
14:29I would imagine that there's at least something that has happened between the two.
14:33Maybe he's thrown Casey the ball before and he hasn't caught it or I don't know.
14:37Right.
14:38So you just never know.
14:40And all this is making me think about the famous Kevin Durant.
14:43That's why I'm out of here moment with Draymond Green.
14:46And so I just looked it up and that was in November of year three.
14:53So November of year three, he and Draymond had that famous exchange where Kevin Durant
14:59said, that's why I'm out of here.
15:01And so that was not the only thing I would imagine that they had a disagreement about.
15:06Probably not.
15:06You get into year three.
15:07It's like, that's it.
15:08How about your sons?
15:10You don't live with them anymore.
15:11They're grown.
15:12But when you lived with them and they had chores and they didn't do them and maybe it was the
15:18second or third time you asked, would it be out of character for you to be like, dude,
15:22take out the bleep and trash?
15:25Yeah, would not be out of the ordinary.
15:27No.
15:27Right.
15:28Is that am I making a poor comparison?
15:31No, it's pretty good.
15:32That's family.
15:33The Giants will tell you that this is family.
15:36It's not.
15:37But you know how it goes.
15:39So you spend every day together.
15:40Right.
15:40And they're a team.
15:41So they're actually supposed to really bond and have chemistry and all of that.
15:44Yeah.
15:45And you and I are not family or Grandy and Lucas, but I spend more time.
15:48I talk to you certainly more than I do my own family.
15:51Four hours a day, every single day.
15:54It's a lot of time.
15:55So we have to act in some ways as a family.
15:58And, you know, if I'm going through something like I was last week with my back, two of
16:02the three of my family members reached out and that was cool.
16:08He's not listening.
16:09It's turkey sandwich time.
16:10It's fine.
16:10He actually did me a solid today.
16:12We brought it in because he did.
16:15He brought it in.
16:15And I read that as him trying to make up for the fact that he did not reach out to
16:19you
16:19last week.
16:20I thought it was opportunistic and I took offense.
16:22It was wonderful.
16:23You know, I thought it was a it was a great adjustment.
16:26Yeah, but that's because you took it as genuine.
16:28I did not.
16:29You know, I thought it was a makeup call.
16:31Wasn't in a spot to judge any possible love and support I was receiving.
16:36Definitely not.
16:36Definitely not.
16:37Right.
16:37It was a vulnerable moment.
16:38Yeah.
16:39Good.
16:39Chalked it up and took it as a moment of growth for the young man.
16:42Was it not genuine?
16:43Not genuine.
16:44No, it was opportunistic.
16:46Jeez.
16:47Yeah, you were really low of me.
16:49No, I don't think low of you.
16:50I just think you were strategically positioned to pull that off.
16:54Dibs was behind me.
16:55He shared some news that was very unfortunate and and and but you were behind me and and
17:01you were close to the door and then you turned to go to the door and granny was right there
17:06in front of you and he knew that he left you high and dry last week.
17:10Yeah, so he's like bringing it didn't even cross my mind.
17:12I was sitting right next to dibs.
17:14I know exactly.
17:15So you're like bringing in to the big guy for the for the big stuff.
17:18What else am I supposed to do?
17:19I don't know.
17:20I don't know.
17:21It was a little like pods who he's playing defense and he sees the guy coming and he
17:25steps in and takes the charge.
17:27I thought it was great footwork.
17:28It was great execution.
17:29Thanks, Jeff.
17:30It was fine.
17:31Tremendous.
17:32Anyway, I'm not giving him any leeway this week.
17:35Knockouts on Monday.
17:36Oh, yeah.
17:37I am using every opportunity to get into your your face, into your head.
17:42Whatever.
17:43Whatever.
17:44I'm going to be like impenetrable, Willard.
17:47I'm going to be like John Stockton.
17:48I'm going to be I'm going to be tripping you.
17:51I'm going to try to pull your shorts down right when you're about to shoot.
17:54That would be embarrassing.
17:55Every single thing that is completely dirty and out of bounds is in bounds as far as I'm
18:00concerned on Monday.
18:01Well, and the skid starts tomorrow with a special beat grandy edition of higher or lower.
18:07So can't wait.
18:08Yeah, it's going to be it's going to be fun.
