00:01In this leafy suburb just north of the city,
00:04these three neighbors are about to throw down
00:06to see whose house is best at home.
00:11While the judges dish out their hot takes...
00:13Whoa. Yellow.
00:14Questionable.
00:15Very bright.
00:16The contestants sit down and watch, ready to clap back.
00:19There is a disconnect from here to here.
00:22I disagree.
00:23I think they really missed an opportunity to clap it in something.
00:26We didn't care for it.
00:27Kim believes her style and function mashup
00:30is her ticket to the top.
00:32I absolutely think my house is a winner.
00:34It feels mature, elegant, and beautiful.
00:39Julie and Emil feel their five-star glam
00:41will blow away the competition.
00:43This house truly turned out amazing.
00:46Anybody who's gonna come in here is gonna fall in love.
00:49There's no other way.
00:50Tal and Tomer are counting on their colorful creativity
00:54to take the title.
00:55Why not give inspiration to other people?
00:58Because this is not a regular design.
01:00When it's all said and judged,
01:01only one neighbor will serve up the swagger
01:03and claim the crown as top of the block.
01:11Don't be fooled by this chill and tranquil suburban hood.
01:14It's full of fiercely proud homeowners
01:16ready to flex their fabulous abodes.
01:20With keen eyes and even keener critiques,
01:23these judges are coming in hot to drop some truth bombs.
01:27Design maven, Mikayla.
01:29I've loved design since I was a child.
01:30When I was nine, I actually got kicked out of a play date
01:33because I kept rearranging the furniture.
01:35Nosy neighbor, Manginder.
01:37Everyone's got a busy life.
01:38I want to come inside your house, see what you're doing,
01:40and how you relax.
01:41And real estate agent, Rodney.
01:43I dislike cookie cutter.
01:46Anything generic.
01:47I need to see personality, uniqueness, style.
01:50The rules of this competition are simple.
01:52Combination of design, function, and added value
01:54must give the winner the edge over the other houses.
01:57I'm a little anxious about being judged.
01:59I hope they're nice even if they don't like it.
02:02It's time to find out whose home will reign supreme.
02:05Let the house wars begin.
02:09We have lived in this house for 18 years.
02:13My husband and I bought this house just before we got married.
02:16It's a place where we've built our family.
02:20I love my new floors, but there are always crumbs.
02:25We've moved some walls around just so that we could open up the space.
02:29We spent so much time and energy and savings, but it was worth it
02:35because it's bright, it's open.
02:37The secret weapon in our house is our mudroom.
02:40It's spacious.
02:41Everything has a home.
02:42It's organized.
02:43It's exactly what we want.
02:45We make all these cupboards.
02:47And they still put everything on the ground.
02:52I think our house will beat any of the other houses on the street
02:56because everything is put together, everything is organized,
02:59and it's all one cohesive design.
03:01And I think it's the best.
03:07Oh, this must be it.
03:08Our judges are here to size up Kim's place.
03:10And she's got a front row seat to the show.
03:16It's looking good.
03:17Yeah, it looks like they put new windows in.
03:19New garage door, front door.
03:21Yeah.
03:22But in neighborhoods like these where, you know,
03:24a lot of the houses look the same.
03:26It's an opportunity to stand out a bit
03:27and add a little bit of extra personality.
03:29I think that they didn't quite complete that task yet.
03:32Ouch.
03:34Well, let's see how the inside looks.
03:36Not off to a very good start.
03:41Ooh.
03:42Nice.
03:42Here we go.
03:44Nice vibe when you walked in.
03:45Yeah.
03:46Oh, yay.
03:46That's what I wanted.
03:47Where do you put your shoes, your jackets?
03:50In the foyer.
03:51Oh, well, we always come in through our mudroom.
03:53They've definitely done quite a few upgrades here.
03:56Baseboards, floors, front door, the windows.
03:59Yes.
04:01Check out the space here.
04:02This room feels unfinished.
04:04I think it looks more staged than it is an actual functional space.
04:08Looks like the renovation kind of came so far
04:10and then they just ran out of ideas.
04:11Oh, my goodness.
04:13I disagree.
04:15Check this space out.
04:17LED strip lighting.
04:18And they clearly like wine.
04:20Love that.
04:22This room has a warm, welcoming feel.
04:24But I would like to see the style in this room extend into the front room.
04:28That walnut panelling could have extended along that wall
04:30or even created lower cabinets for storage.
04:32Also, the wall panelling is a modern wood compared to the rustic floors
04:36and a live edge table.
04:37I'm not sure if it's a total match.
04:39Michaela, you're so picky.
04:41I think the design style is done tastefully.
04:43I do like it.
04:44It's modern.
04:45It's chic.
04:45Thank you, Manginder.
04:47I see a little butler's pantry.
04:50Love the quartz countertops that seamlessly flow into the backsplash.
04:54I like the wall ovens in the pantry, but it's really accessible still to the kitchen.
04:58I love the walnut floating shelf.
05:00That's nice continuity.
05:01See something like this?
05:02Using the same materials in that front sitting room would have been nice.
05:05But I think this wall is a missed opportunity for some really great wallpaper.
05:09Oh, no.
05:10No wallpaper.
05:11Well, Kim, if designed by a mission is your thing...
05:16Check this out.
05:18My geometric accent wall.
05:20Where have you been?
05:21Oh.
05:21Oh, yay!
05:23We were scared to do that wall, but I'm so glad that we did.
05:26Yeah, they've combined all of the materials that we saw on the front of the house here.
05:29The island cabinets are black, the same as the dining room.
05:31The handle hardware is consistent throughout.
05:33And I like this hot filler.
05:34That's nice to have.
05:36Gorgeous appliances.
05:36There's a lot of added value in this kitchen.
05:39I'm glad Rodney likes it.
05:41You know what's missing?
05:43An overhang for seating.
05:45Yes.
05:46You cannot sit at this island.
05:48We preferred having the storage more.
05:50If you put the overhang in, you don't have the same kind of storage.
05:54Really open concept, but there is a little bit of disconnect from here to here.
06:00Yeah, it's the style of the couch.
06:02In the suburbs, there's a risk that you look cookie cutter on the outside, but I'm starting
06:06to get cookie cutter on the inside vibes here.
06:09Oh, goodness.
06:11That hurts.
06:17It's a big couch.
06:18I like it.
06:19Oh, this is comfortable.
06:21All right.
06:22Yeah.
06:23Have a seat.
06:24Enjoy.
06:25How many people can this fit?
06:27Sorry, I couldn't hear you.
06:28What was that?
06:30Got a mud room over here.
06:32Oh, I love the green.
06:34Look at the length of these cabinets.
06:36Yeah.
06:36You can tell that these guys probably don't use the front door.
06:39This is their mud room.
06:39They come in through the garage.
06:40Yeah.
06:41Got their hooks for their coats.
06:42Yes, exactly.
06:44Man, Jinder gets it.
06:45We don't use the front door.
06:46Is that a light or is that a drying rack?
06:48It's a drying rack.
06:49Very smart space planning.
06:50I'm glad they like our mud room.
06:52Our secret weapon.
06:53There's a little bathroom right here, too.
06:56This is cute.
06:56It's modern.
06:57It's simple.
06:58Wall-mounted toilet.
07:00The blue light is a fun touch.
07:01I feel like I'm in a club.
07:03Yes, we did have some fun with that room.
07:05This is looking good.
07:05I like it.
07:06It's warm.
07:07This is doing it for me.
07:08I'm most impressed by the mud room.
07:10Knocks it out of the park for me.
07:13Knocks it out of the park.
07:16Hang tight, Kim.
07:17Because opponents Julia and Emile are here set to drop some more truth bones.
07:21Wow.
07:23It's very nice of them.
07:25But I like our lighting so much better.
07:29I think when you open the doors to our house, it has this wow factor.
07:34I think my house has a wow factor when you walk into it, too.
07:37Do you think they can beat us?
07:40I don't think so.
07:41Wow.
07:42They are very confident.
07:43I respect that.
07:44I still love my house, though.
07:47We'll see if that confidence lasts because it's Julia and Emile's turn to step into the fire.
07:52We live in the suburbs.
07:552,900 square foot home.
07:57Nice, beautiful, and spacious.
07:59When we walked in here, we fell in love.
08:01The layout, everything, we just loved it.
08:03We come home.
08:04We feel zen.
08:06We enjoy spending time here.
08:08We enjoy cooking.
08:10Wonderful.
08:11We love to host.
08:12We have a big family.
08:14So every time we have a holiday or a birthday or something, it happens here.
08:19What do you want to do with the blanket?
08:20Leave it the way it was.
08:22The secret weapon of our house is definitely the kitchen.
08:25The big island, every shelf has a purpose, and it's the showstopper.
08:30Jill, I think we should leave it open for the judges to see how it reclines.
08:34Or do you think it's too much?
08:35My favorite part is the couch.
08:38The reclinables.
08:39Let's go.
08:41This house is definitely a winner.
08:42We love coming home.
08:48What a wonderful fall day.
08:50Yes, a beautiful day.
08:53Exciting.
08:54Let's see.
08:56This is a cute house.
08:58Oh, thank you.
08:59I like the cute little scallop detail above the front door and the shutters.
09:03It's inviting.
09:04They've done a lot on the curb appeal.
09:06New steps, new garage doors, and a new front door.
09:09The only drawback, there's not enough greenery.
09:12Yeah, those plants are flatlining.
09:14Who's going to take care of all this grass?
09:16Exactly.
09:19I'm in a hotel.
09:21How?
09:21It's nice.
09:22Yeah.
09:22Nice first impression.
09:23I like that.
09:24We want it to feel like we're living in a five-star hotel.
09:27I think they've made some bold choices with the lighting and the big mirror.
09:31I installed it myself.
09:32Space looks three times the size because of this mirror.
09:35And large format tiles really work for me.
09:37Because they're high gloss, so any wet feet would be on your butt.
09:41Yeah.
09:41I love the floors.
09:43Powder room.
09:43Powder room.
09:44Right here.
09:45Ooh, guys, check out this vanity.
09:47Back, lit.
09:48Oh, yeah.
09:49That's a nice vanity.
09:49This is a real fun little upgrade.
09:51Yeah.
09:53Ooh.
09:54Let's check out the dining room.
09:55Look at our house.
09:56Like, look at the way it looks.
09:58Wow.
09:58These live edge tables, very nice.
10:01Right, enjoy.
10:02This is a very large dining table.
10:06Also, they're consistent.
10:07That's the same countertops as we have in the washroom.
10:10Very modern.
10:11Thank you, Rodney.
10:12I'm happy you noticed.
10:14Yeah, really nice touches with the lighting inside the cabinetry.
10:17I wonder if one of these is a bar fridge, do you think?
10:20Ta-da!
10:21Oh, you found it.
10:22Oh.
10:22There we go.
10:23There it is.
10:24I really like the space.
10:26I love the openness of it.
10:27I like the way it looks.
10:29Functionally, it's too big of a space.
10:31You're not eating dinner here every day.
10:32I feel like if I was living in this dining room,
10:34I'd always have to be wearing high heels and holding a martini.
10:39You know, those chairs over there, I don't think it needs to be here.
10:42Let's be honest.
10:43No one's actually sitting there.
10:44Well, me and you.
10:46Okay, let's do it.
10:47Sure.
10:48This is looking more waiting room than dining room.
10:51I'm just waiting for my appointment.
10:54Ouch.
10:55That's got to sting.
10:56Okay.
10:58Definitely ultra modern.
11:00I can tell you one thing.
11:01There's no kids in this house.
11:03Too clean.
11:04There's a lot of white.
11:05Well, they're teens.
11:06They're teens.
11:0716 and 18.
11:08It's not kids.
11:09Seems a little sterile.
11:10This is what we wanted to achieve after not having small kids anymore.
11:15To me, it's very homey.
11:17These appliances are very high-end.
11:20Adds a lot of value.
11:21This island, huge.
11:24I think these lights are fun.
11:26They remind me of the moon and the sun at the same time.
11:29It does seem like something that would be in a hotel lobby.
11:32Yeah.
11:34News flash, not a compliment.
11:36It's a cozy little room.
11:39The focal point here is this wonderful fireplace.
11:42I think they really missed an opportunity to clad it in something.
11:45We didn't care for it.
11:46It's a nice couch.
11:47Let's try this out.
11:49Bye, Rodney.
11:50See you on the other side.
11:52Loving this.
11:53This is awesome.
11:54Do all men just love a recliner?
11:56Yes.
11:56Michaela, please help yourself as well.
12:00Overall, it has that wow factor that I've been looking for.
12:03It's luxurious.
12:04It's contemporary.
12:05This house screams fancy hotel.
12:07I'm probably moving in on Monday.
12:08Okay.
12:10Yes, Rodney.
12:11I like to hear that.
12:12Okay.
12:12Speaking of uninvited guests, opponents Tal and Tomer are here to offer up their unwelcome
12:17opinions.
12:18Mmm.
12:19Mmm.
12:21Okay.
12:23Yeah, okay.
12:25It's very white.
12:26Ours has more colors.
12:28They're trying not to like it too much, right?
12:29Yes, in a way, yes.
12:30Well, they are our opponents.
12:32So it's more minimalist.
12:34Like, if you go to our house, it's easy to know that we love books and music.
12:38That's right.
12:39Other than the wine and the wine accessories, I don't see, like, who they are, like, what
12:44they like.
12:44Wine.
12:45We like wine.
12:47Well, the kitchen is nice.
12:49It's well designed.
12:50I guess so, yeah.
12:52After seeing this, I'm not so sure about our place in this competition.
12:56Really?
12:56Yeah.
12:57You have confidence?
12:57I have confidence, yeah.
12:59I feel very confident.
13:00Yeah.
13:00I love our house.
13:03All confidence aside, it's Tal and Tomer's time to get dissected.
13:08Three years ago, we remodeled the dining room and the living room.
13:12So many books, I don't have time to read it.
13:15Oh, I read this.
13:17I like books.
13:18And my books were all over the place.
13:20I made the decision to create libraries.
13:24Finally, these books are organized.
13:29In our basement, we built a studio for my band.
13:32And I want them to feel that they're coming into a space of winners.
13:36And now life will never be the same.
13:38Every time we bring people into the house, in general, people, they say,
13:42this is such an inspiring place.
13:45Amos, we got to leave.
13:46The judges are coming.
13:48Coming.
13:51Remember, we're winners.
13:52The reason why we want to win is because we're so proud of the space we created.
13:58Okay.
13:58Let's do this.
13:59Let's do this.
14:03All right.
14:03This is the house.
14:04This is the house.
14:06Looks nice from here.
14:07Yeah, what a nice shot.
14:08Not sure how I'm feeling about a green roof.
14:10Ah, you chose the color.
14:12I like the green shingles.
14:13It is lacking some curb appeal here.
14:15But who doesn't love a little front porch?
14:17Throw some mums there and they would look real nice.
14:20Yeah, some fresh flowers.
14:21Sorry judges, we don't know how to keep flowers alive.
14:24Yeah, we kill flowers.
14:25We kill flowers.
14:26And plants.
14:29Ooh.
14:30Wow.
14:31Very nice.
14:32Like right away, you know a little bit about this family, right?
14:34Like Talon Tamer love music.
14:36The guitar, the old piano.
14:38It's a fun way to add personality.
14:40You can see our personality immediately.
14:43I'm seeing some pretty clever hacks happening here.
14:46We've got big box store cabinetry.
14:48Yup.
14:48But they've picked a wall paint color in the exact same color
14:51to help it blend in.
14:53It gives it more of that custom feel.
14:55Exactly.
14:56Oh, I like her.
14:57And that dining table, you can tell they use this
15:00as a formal dining space, which a lot of people have.
15:02In my opinion, they don't really use it anymore.
15:04We do use it.
15:05We use it.
15:05We use it a lot.
15:06For homework, for everything.
15:07I love the amount of pot lights that love this space.
15:11Do you really?
15:12Having these lights on all the time would be overpowering.
15:14It's because there's not enough light coming into the house,
15:17so we had to build...
15:18All the lights is Tomer's idea.
15:20The chandelier is a great addition,
15:22because if you're having a dinner party,
15:23this would be a much more pleasant light
15:25than all the pot lights.
15:26I choose.
15:27Yes.
15:28Thank you, Michela.
15:29For me, with this space,
15:30it doesn't have that wow factor for me.
15:32This is just another room.
15:33Really?
15:34No wow factor.
15:35Okay.
15:36Okay.
15:36To each his own.
15:38I love the coffee nook.
15:40Everyone likes a coffee and tea nook.
15:42I like the layout of this kitchen,
15:43because you get to see all the way into the dining room
15:46and the family room.
15:47So, you know, it's like command central.
15:49It is a little dated, but for the most part,
15:52I think it works.
15:53Family room area.
15:55Yeah.
15:56There's a lot of art on the walls,
15:58and personally, I'm okay with just plain blank space.
16:02Really?
16:03Oh, yeah.
16:03Really?
16:04Absolutely.
16:04I like the art on the walls.
16:06I think Michela is much more in our vibes.
16:08There is a lot of color,
16:09but you can see that they're trying to bring it together
16:11with the yellows.
16:12I think it's a little busy.
16:14And the corner of the fireplace,
16:15I mean, I'm used to seeing it in the middle of the space
16:17as the focal point.
16:19It's a little weird.
16:20We decided not to break it.
16:22Budget-wise,
16:22so that we can spend it elsewhere in the house.
16:26Hearing protection required.
16:30All right.
16:30I see some lights.
16:32Is there a fog machine down here?
16:34Yes, there is.
16:35Yes, Michela.
16:36What is going on?
16:43Where are we?
16:44And what is going on right now?
16:46We are in a different house.
16:48I'm actually speechless.
16:49This puts the base in basement.
16:52Ah!
16:53I like it.
16:54All right.
16:54Makes sense.
16:55The connections between the music,
16:57upstairs and everything down here.
16:59So I see how it's coming together.
17:01Starting to get the vibes.
17:02We should start from the basement.
17:05That's right.
17:06Do you even have the acoustic wall paneling throughout?
17:09What a clever idea.
17:10Do you use the drums as a coffee table?
17:12This would be a great place for family karaoke night.
17:14It's not a karaoke.
17:17It's live music.
17:18It's live music.
17:18Yeah.
17:19If you don't know how to sing, don't come.
17:21Boom.
17:22Mic drop.
17:23Is this too niche?
17:25Yes, of course.
17:26That is the intention.
17:27In terms of value added, they could have put more money upstairs renovating the kitchen.
17:31But for this family, for Tamara and Tal, I feel like this is what fits their personality.
17:35Family value add is here.
17:37Michaela nailed it.
17:38Yes.
17:39Absolutely.
17:39She nailed it.
17:41Ooh.
17:41Look at this color.
17:43The ombre.
17:45Yes.
17:45Little room divider.
17:47Whoa.
17:47Yellow.
17:48They are bold with their choices down here.
17:50It's really playful.
17:51Questionable.
17:51Very bright.
17:53Yes.
17:53A lot of people say, I've enjoyed this basement so much, I forgot which house we were in.
17:58Wow factor is definitely down here.
17:59Not so much upstairs, but they did put their stamp on this house.
18:03That is for sure.
18:04Okay, honey.
18:05Look like winners.
18:06This is what winners look like.
18:10All right, judges.
18:12Design, function, and added value are your metrics.
18:15Time to pick which house is on top of this block.
18:18Okay, so let's talk about Kim's house.
18:20I love the dining room with that nice live edge table and the wall with the wine.
18:24And I really like the kitchen.
18:25It's subtle, very warm.
18:28Yeah, I can picture like making family meals in that kitchen.
18:30Absolutely.
18:31And then you have that geometric accent wall.
18:34I love that wall.
18:35Yes.
18:36And there's value added in that beautiful butler's pantry.
18:38I think the mud room was a winner as well though.
18:40With the nice colors, with the green, it's very functional.
18:43Completely makes up for the lack of storage in the foyer.
18:46The front sitting room left a little to be desired and the family room, to me, didn't quite hit the
18:50mark.
18:50But as a mom myself, I can't help but be drawn to a space where I can picture hosting my
18:56family and friends.
18:58So, Julia and Emile's house.
19:00It was probably the most functional front entry we've seen.
19:02It had that cute little powder room.
19:04Look at that dining room.
19:05There's a lot of value added.
19:06You have a lot of built-ins.
19:08Great cabinetry.
19:09It has that feel of sophistication and style.
19:11For me, it does seem very sterile.
19:14It looks like a hotel, feels like a hotel.
19:15I don't see a family actually sitting there and having dinner.
19:18It is the most open concept we've seen.
19:20They really did a great job of opening up the walls.
19:22But it almost feels like an event space.
19:24Like you could book it.
19:25Just like a hotel.
19:27That kitchen is massive.
19:29It has tons of storage.
19:30Everything is hidden out of sight, which is what I like.
19:32Best organized kitchen I've seen in a long time.
19:34They made a lot of investments into making the upgrades.
19:37But I still feel like they could have gone a little further and make it more warm and inviting.
19:41Tal and Tamer's house.
19:42I really feel that through their design, I get a good sense of who they really are.
19:46They have the large dining table, piano in that space as well.
19:50You can tell they're passionate about music and gathering together.
19:53It's a wonderfully designed and thoughtful space.
19:56It's the back half of the main floor that really needs their attention.
19:59That kitchen just needs updating all the way.
20:01But that basement, they had the full band set up and everything like that.
20:06I think that's where the family really gathers.
20:08The design intent is there.
20:09They've had the first egg yolk yellow bathroom I've ever seen.
20:12I still can't get over the colors.
20:14Definitely the basement is where they put their focus on.
20:16I would love to see what they would have done if they put that basement energy into the main floor.
20:21Time to make a decision.
20:22I'm torn.
20:30Time to find out whose house will be crowned top of the block.
20:34After watching the judges walk through the house, I'm not feeling so good about my place in the competition right
20:40now.
20:40Honestly, I feel less confident now because the judges did point some areas that might be not for everyone.
20:51I'm feeling super excited.
20:52We feel like we have a very strong chance.
20:55The verdict is in.
20:57I love my house, so I'm hopeful, but I'm a little worried.
21:02As the judges were walking downstairs, I saw their faces glowing.
21:06I'm even more confident that we are going to win.
21:09I love that the judges kept on saying it feels like a hotel lobby.
21:14That's what we wanted to achieve.
21:23Hi.
21:25Not at all scary.
21:27Him.
21:28You won!
21:30Oh my gosh!
21:36Thank you so much!
21:37I'm so happy!
21:39Your design had purpose.
21:41It had intention.
21:42Congratulations.
21:43We really admire a lot of the design choices you made.
21:46My favorite room, hands down, is the mud room.
21:48Not only did you pack a ton of functionality into that space, but I love the color.
21:52I love my mud room.
21:54The number one thing for me, that couch is so comfortable.
21:56You can fit a million people on it.
21:58A million and one.
22:01I feel devastated.
22:03But at the same time, I don't want to be a sore loser.
22:06So congratulations to Kim for winning.
22:09I'm disappointed.
22:11Surprised, actually.
22:12I have no regrets whether we win or whether we lose.
22:16I'm proud.
22:17This is my house.
22:18It's so great being top of the block.
22:20This means so much to me, and I know it's going to mean so much to my family.
22:24We all love our house, but it's even better knowing that other people do, too.
