00:01:30The Driscoll Hotel is the most haunted hotel in Texas and the oldest operating hotel in

00:01:35the city of Austin.

00:01:36It was built in 1886 by Colonel Jesse Driscoll, who was a wealthy cattle baron who wanted to

00:01:40bring an opulent hotel to the new capital of Texas.

00:01:43It cost Mr. Driscoll $400,000, aka $92 million in today's money, to build this hotel.

00:01:50So he was rich, rich.

00:01:52He was rich.

00:01:53Driscoll absolutely loved this hotel and he was known to greet all the guests while smoking

00:01:56a cigar in the lobby.

00:01:57But unfortunately, after an incredibly hot summer, followed by an incredibly cold winter,

00:02:02all of his cows died, which means he lost all of his wealth and this hotel.

00:02:09Then soon after that, he died in 1890, but is known to be one of the most popular ghosts

00:08:26Driscoll is known to be the most haunted hotel in Texas, with rumors of there being up to

00:08:3190 different spirits that roam these halls.

00:08:33There's a lot of different theories on why, starting with the fact that the hotel was built

00:08:37from brick, iron, and limestone, all known to conduct paranormal activity.

00:08:41There's also built on top of a mineral water spring, which, as we know from the mineral

00:08:44springs hotel, carries spiritual activity.

00:08:46Or it could just be because this is a poppin' hotel.

00:08:49This environment created a lot of powerful memories, which might have led spirits back

00:08:53here in the afterlife.

00:08:54And although the Driscoll is extremely haunted, there are no known malevolent spirits here.

00:08:58Actually, as long as you're polite, the spirits are known to be very helpful.

00:09:01A unique manifestation here is static electricity, specifically felt on your neck and your scalp.

00:09:06Batteries are also known to drain quickly, and electrical equipment like the elevators malfunction

00:09:11all the time.

00:09:12Distant voices and knocking are common, especially when recounting the ghost stories of the hotel.

00:09:16Because let's be honest, everybody just wants to hear about themselves.

00:09:19Even in the afterlife.

00:09:20All of these reasons lead this place to have up to 90 spirits in the hotel.

00:09:49The main lobby is where mostly spirits seem to hang around, including the original owner,

00:09:54Jesse Driscoll.

00:09:55His spirit is known to be around his portrait there in the lobby, smoke a cigar.

00:09:58But he's also seen all around the hotel.

00:10:00He was even seen in this very room, which is the LBJ suite.

00:10:03One day, a guest woke up to find a random man standing in his room looking out the window.

00:10:08He obviously was freaked out, so he shouted out the man, what are you doing here?

00:10:11Went and turned on the lights, and when he turned around, all that was left was a cloud of smoke.

00:10:16Colonel Jesse Lincoln Driscoll.

00:10:17He was the founder of this hotel.

00:10:19He had a lot of money.

00:10:20He was a rancher, cattle baron in 1884.

00:10:23It's when the Texas State Capitol was being built, so Texas was very new.

00:10:27And Jesse noticed that there wasn't really any place for these very fancy people who were suddenly coming through Texas

00:10:33to stay.

00:10:33And so he wanted to build a really grand hotel.

00:10:36So it started in 1884, finally completed in 1886.

00:10:39His portrait still remains here.

00:10:40This was created in 1819, the year that he died.

00:10:43And so legend has it, since this is Jesse's place, it still has a big energetic tie to it.

00:10:46And so people will see cigar smoke around the portrait.

00:10:50He was a big cigar guy, so if you smell cigars any time you're in the hotel.

00:11:12I was exploring like back passageways on my first day here.

00:11:14And I suddenly smelled cigar smoke before I knew the story.

00:11:17And I was like, why does it smell like cigars back here?

00:11:19And so I was like, oh, Jesse's welcoming you to the hotel, I guess.

00:11:21Hey, hopefully he welcomes us.

00:11:25People have seen him on the balcony of suites when like nobody's staying.

00:12:10when nobody's there.

00:12:11And finally inside the vault, there's the gray man who is the only known unfriendly spirit.

00:12:17There's not that much known about this gray man other than he appears in black and white

00:12:21and always looks agitated.

00:12:22So tonight we're going to see if we can get the triplets to make friends with them

00:12:25and maybe make them a little less agitated.

00:14:55She broke her neck violently and died.

00:15:04She was about four years old and she was playing with her ball.

00:15:06She was the senator's daughter.

00:15:08And she fell down the stairs over there.

00:15:13She was actually the first person to pass here at the Driscoll.

00:15:16And so, I think that might be why kind of her spirit remains so prominent here.
