00:04My name is Sarah and I am the mother of a former member of the far right.
00:09One thing that I've learned along the way is just how important the parental role is.
00:15From the beginning, when parents recognise and acknowledge that their child is showing signs of having extremist views and opinions,
00:23to making that difficult call for help that is often desperately needed.
00:30The parents are a vital support system that can help their child to turn their lives around before it's too
00:37late.
00:38It is imperative that parents and any other support system in place that is helping your child work together as
00:47one.
00:48Parents especially can often be conflicted in how to handle these unforeseen situations and challenges that your child will present.
00:58However, when parents are busy disagreeing on how best to deal with the situation,
01:06the organisations that are encouraging your child's views and opinions will be offering your child opposing support
01:14and tightening their grip and driving them deeper into that world of hatred and anger.
01:22The effects of extremism ripple through families.
01:27Not only do you fear for your child's prospects, but many parents worry for their safety too.
01:33And it's not just the child's safety that should be of concern, it's the whole families.
01:39When joining organisations like that, everyone close to the individual involved can become a target.
01:47Many children that become involved fail to even consider this,
01:52along with how involvement can impact the rest of their lives and their future and that of their families.
02:00No one can reiterate this to a child more than a mother or father.
02:05Ask your child how they would feel if their little brother or sister was targeted or bullied because of their
02:13extreme views and opinions.
02:15Ask them how they think their involvement might be affecting your life or work or friendships.
02:24Discuss with your child the impact of their involvement and how it will affect the rest of their lives and
02:30their future.
02:32What will happen if they get a criminal record?
02:35What happens if a future employer does a social media check?
02:41Ask them how their involvement is affecting friendships and relationships.
02:46Ask them is all of this really worth it?
02:49And do they really believe that they are making a positive difference?
02:55Parents can be a big influence on a child that needs help on their journey away from extremism.
03:02I know first hand how difficult this journey is.
03:05But I can also assure you that you can successfully get through this.
