Families suffer as well as those who become involved in extremism and they see first hand the damage, involvement can have.

Appealing to those involved, this is 1 of 2 videos made by mums who want to talk to those involved directly.

Please listen to what they have to say, and think about what they are asking.

If you have a question, please get in touch. Email: info@exithate.org

00:04I want to talk to those who might be involved
00:06or thinking of getting involved in far-right extremism.
00:10Whether you are posting comments in support of a cause you think is patriotic,
00:15involved in forums with like-minded people,
00:18or attending rallies or demonstrations
00:21that are actively spreading far-right narratives.
00:25I want to ask you to take a minute and ask yourself this question.
00:30How are your actions and your involvement affecting your loved ones?
00:35Now your immediate reply might be,
00:38what I do doesn't affect anyone else.
00:41So let's talk about that.
00:43The reason I ask is,
00:45I am the mum of a former member of the extreme right wing.
00:49My son was active online and he himself spread hate and misinformation.
00:55He also attended a number of demonstrations.
00:58If I am honest, during his involvement,
01:01he almost destroyed both of our lives.
01:04Due to his narratives and newfound beliefs,
01:07I faced constant criticism and judgment.
01:10My safety, my relationships and my future were all compromised.
01:15I did not share or agree with his opinions,
01:18but that meant nothing to many of those watching and judging.
01:22I was put at risk simply because I was his mother.
01:26My mental health and well-being suffered
01:28and I was desperately worried about the son that I loved.
01:32But whatever I tried to do,
01:34I was met with ridicule and resistance.
01:37I had to watch helplessly
01:39as the happy and loving son I once knew slowly disappeared.
01:44And what replaced him was an angry stranger
01:47that I barely recognised.
01:49A boy who spoke about family values
01:51yet treated me appallingly for simply disagreeing with him.
01:55A boy who was happy to compromise the safety and security
01:59of our home and our existence
02:01for strangers that he did not know
02:03and a narrative of spreading extremism.
02:06He didn't care that I struggled to eat or sleep,
02:10nor did he care that I was obviously afraid of him.
02:13My son, who was once respectful and protective,
02:17who was the one person I believed I could trust wholeheartedly,
02:21became the person I feared most.
02:24He was unpredictable and thrived on chaos.
02:28His home and his family and friends
02:30were no longer important to him
02:32and became nothing more than an afterthought.
02:35He didn't appear to enjoy life anymore
02:38and found fault with everything and everyone in it.
02:41He claimed he wanted to make the world a better place,
02:44yet he was causing nothing but misery and fear.
02:47And it wasn't only him and me that were affected,
02:50his grandparents felt the same,
02:52desperately worried about their daughter,
02:54who they could visibly see was struggling,
02:56and their grandson, whom they absolutely adored.
03:00Today, we sadly aren't a minority either.
03:03After supporting families with a loved one
03:06involved in extremism for five years,
03:09I can tell you now every family has shared similar stories,
03:13each one devastatingly damaged
03:15and eternally scarred by their loved one's involvement.
03:19So I will take this opportunity
03:21to ask you that question once again.
03:25How are your actions and your involvement affecting your loved ones?
03:30If you want to reduce the damage
03:32and need support in leaving extremism
03:35and getting a better life,
03:37then there is help available.
03:39Simply reach out and ask for help.
03:41It is never too late.
03:43People care and want the best for you.
03:45Please think about yourself,
03:47your parents and your loved ones.
03:49You are not alone.
03:54You are not alone.
03:55You are not alone.
