00:00You look tense.
00:02Yeah, I, uh, yeah.
00:05I know what you need. A little jewel.
00:09No.
00:11Come on, it'll loosen you up.
00:13Welcome to Mojo Plays, and sometimes we crave the nostalgic days of good old-fashioned turn-based combat.
00:20And thankfully, the genre isn't dead, even in the ninth generation of consoles.
00:30Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:35videos.
00:37Mario Plus Rabbids Sparks of Hope
00:48This never should have been a thing, let alone such a damn fun game.
00:53Rabbidizing some of the most iconic Mario characters should have been a recipe for disaster and annoyance,
00:59but thanks to a surprisingly deep and strategic battle system,
01:03Sparks of Hope significantly improved on the groundwork laid by Kingdom Battle.
01:07Every character has their own unique weaponry and special moves,
01:10and strategically placing them around the arena can lead to complete domination or a nail-biting last-minute victory.
01:17The story is interesting enough to keep you pushing forward,
01:20and the worlds are intricately designed and full of secrets and nods to Mario's storied history.
01:25But you're here to watch Princess Peach decimate with an umbrella shotgun,
01:29and the game more than delivers on that promise.
01:32Who knew all it took was making every Mario character strapped to the teeth
01:35to make one of the most creative Mario games of all time?
01:45Deltarune.
01:46Although the Deltarune saga is still ongoing,
01:49we'd be remiss if we overlooked Toby Fox's brilliant follow-up to his smash hit Undertale.
01:54While all the elements that made Undertale such a hit are present in Deltarune,
01:58Toby Fox once again subverts expectations about the genre
02:02with his clever writing, impeccable, and immediately interesting and well-designed characters
02:06brought to life by the game's wonderful pixel art
02:09and a soundtrack that will be thumping in your head long after you put down the controller.
02:13Much like Undertale, Deltarune's traditional turn-based battles involve quick-time-style events
02:18in which you can choose to end a battle through violence or winning over the enemy with compassion.
02:23But there are enough meaningful improvements to the systems
02:26to keep the familiar combat interesting throughout your playthrough.
02:29With at least three additional chapters still to come,
02:32the saga of Deltarune is far from over, but more than worth your time.
02:36Pokemon Legends Arceus.
02:38It's hard to ignore the fact that for a lot of gamers,
02:41Pokemon was their first experience with turn-based combat,
02:44and the series has steadily made small but important changes to their system
02:48they essentially perfected right out of the gate with Pokemon Red and Blue.
02:52Arceus allows you to openly stalk and hunt Pokemon in the open world,
02:56and once you engage in combat, you can even move your trainer to the most optimal viewpoint
03:01to watch nature beat the hell out of itself at your commands.
03:05The rock-paper-scissors-style combat might not have evolved much over the many years and entries,
03:10but Arceus is probably the closest to how we imagined hunting Pokemon felt
03:15back in the good old days on our Game Boys.
03:17With additional types and elements to keep track of,
03:20the battles might be more strategic than they used to be,
03:22but they're still as fun now as they were back then.
03:25Divinity Original Sin 2.
03:34Designed by the RPG masters Larian Studios,
03:37more on their magnum opus in a bit,
03:39Divinity Original Sin is not only one of the best RPGs of all time,
03:43but one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever.
03:47Seamlessly blending isometric turn-based combat with a stunningly gorgeous and detailed world,
03:52full of rich and deep characters and player-driven choices,
03:55Original Sin 2 is a showcase of the studio's abilities,
03:58and the framework which Baldur's Gate 3 was built on.
04:01With open-ended and highly tactical turn-based combat that rewards experimentation,
04:06thanks to the near-limitless options available to the player during combat,
04:09each encounter feels distinct from one another,
04:11while allowing players room for trial and error.
04:14The entire world feels alive,
04:16and the side quests you can undertake are just as entertaining as the main story itself,
04:21making it easy to lose a hundred hours in its world.
04:27Cassette Beast
04:37Speaking of Pokemon,
04:38that series has inspired more than its fair share of games over the years,
04:42but Cassette Beast managed to put enough of its own mark on the formula
04:45that it's anything but a shameless knockoff.
04:48Whereas in that series your goal is to capture the creatures to use in battle,
04:51in Cassette Beast you can use the cassette recorder to record the many creatures on the island
04:56and transform into them and engage in battle.
04:59With 120 beasts to find and record,
05:02as well as thousands of possible fusion combinations,
05:05Cassette Beast builds on the traditional Pokemon formula
05:07and offers players more customization during combat,
05:10and each of the creatures is distinct and wonderfully designed.
05:14The overworld itself is quite large,
05:16and the additional characters that join your party
05:18help drive the narrative forward,
05:20even if the overarching plot isn't as interesting as the world itself.
05:30Octopath Traveler 2
05:40Octopath Traveler and its sequel are without a doubt
05:42some of the best examples of what makes turn-based RPGs so incredible.
05:46With highly customizable characters and customization,
05:50along with a rich and detailed world and eight playable characters,
05:53Octopath Traveler 2 is a masterwork of the genre square-helped pioneer
05:58that is not only a throwback to classic RPGs,
06:01but also brings their mechanics into the modern age,
06:04showcasing how groundbreaking many of these elements can still be decades later.
06:08The turn-based combat offers a traditional experience,
06:11but with the added strategic depth of breaking down enemy defenses
06:14and making the best use of each character's unique set of skills.
06:18The story and multiple-character storylines is where the game truly shines,
06:22as each of the eight playable characters have their own unique paths and motivations
06:26that culminate in a showcase of the best of what the genre has to offer.
06:30Now I am the conscious...
06:37...devourer of all money in this world.
06:41Metaphor Re-Fantasio
06:49While it would have been easy to fit Persona 5 into this slot,
06:52we decided to go with the studio's most recent genre-defining work of art,
06:56Metaphor Re-Fantasio.
06:57Taking many of the systems and mechanics from its wildly popular Persona series,
07:01Metaphor builds on these elements and even streamlines many aspects,
07:05meaning there's less padding and always something to work towards with a clear objective.
07:09The new archetype system acts as jobs for the characters during battle
07:13and allows all characters to specialize in whichever archetype you prefer,
07:17allowing for more flexibility in your playstyle than previous Atlus titles.
07:21Battles themselves are incredibly cinematic and flashy like you'd expect from a developer,
07:26and the overarching narrative dives deep into heavy and mature topics
07:30without sugarcoating anything or talking down to the player,
07:33driving you all the way to the end with deep characterization
07:35and an endlessly interesting world to unravel.
07:38Until a worthy success arises, I shall keep the set.
07:43Only one may wield the magic of kings, the true protector of the world.
07:49Sea of Stars
07:50What initially appears to be your typical save-the-world style game
07:54becomes so much more with multiple unexpected twists
07:57as well as brilliantly three-dimensional characters
07:59and a wonderfully detailed world to explore.
08:02However, it's the game's combat that truly steals the show.
08:05Both main characters have unique abilities
08:07that make them especially tuned to deal specific damage in combat
08:11and enemies will often telegraph their attacks beforehand,
08:14allowing you to break or nullify the damage with an attack of your own,
08:17and as the story progresses and the more powerful you get,
08:20the more complicated these spell breaks become.
08:23It's a surprisingly complex but rewarding system
08:26that makes battles more engaging than simply waiting your turn.
08:29Fans of classic SNES or PS1-era RPGs,
08:33particularly Chrono Trigger,
08:34should play this gorgeously handcrafted homage
08:37to those timeless classics sooner rather than later.
08:40Baldur's Gate 3
08:49Baldur's Gate 3 is not only one of the greatest RPGs
08:53and video games of all time,
08:55but it also managed to convert many
08:57who were against turn-based combat
08:59with its dynamic story and characters
09:01being too compelling to ignore.
09:03With a combat system that rewarded players' imagination
09:05and ingenuity,
09:07the options for many encounters within the game
09:09was near limitless.
09:11Baldur's Gate 3 not only allowed players
09:13full control over their characters and the narrative,
09:15but also the battlefield itself.
09:18Having trouble with a particular boss
09:19blew up the bridge they need to cross
09:21before the encounter even begins.
09:23Facing overwhelming odds,
09:24stack explosive barrels around the room
09:26to take out multiple foes in one go.
09:29Baldur's Gate 3's systems give players so many options
09:31that it's likely you barely even notice
09:33you're not engaged in constant combat
09:35and waiting your next turn
09:37as you strategically plan your next move.
09:39I riddle thee not.
09:41I speak only what requires telling.
09:44Claire Obscure, Expedition 33.
09:47Why didn't you show her some of your fighting skills
09:49to prove her wrong?
09:56Not only the inspiration for this list,
09:59but also nearly single-handedly responsible
10:01for reigniting a lot of RPG fans' love
10:04for turn-based combat.
10:05Crafted as a love letter
10:07to the old school days of Final Fantasy,
10:09Expedition 33 crafts not only a world full of characters
10:12you can instantly fall in love with
10:14and lose dozens of hours in,
10:15but also a combat system that is so much fun
10:18I didn't even mind the numerous times
10:20I had to grind and level up for a new area.
10:23By adding elements to keep the player
10:24constantly locked in during battles
10:26such as dodge and parries,
10:28Expedition 33's combat is some of the best
10:30the genre has to offer.
10:32Along with the addition of customizing your party
10:34with numerous Pictos to unlock special abilities,
10:37the option to completely tailor your combat style
10:40as well as experiment with different builds
10:42gives players more freedom than most traditional RPGs
10:45have in years.
10:46Right, can we talk about this later?
10:49I'd really like for you all to survive this.
