00:00Welcome to MojoPlays and the late 90s brought us some of the most iconic games of all.
00:30Nintendo 64, Sega Satin, goddamn PlayStation. What an era. And of course, we want to re-experience
00:36the games from this time with a fresh coat of paint. These are the 10 best remakes of 90s games.
00:42Let's do it. Before we continue, we publish content all week long,
00:46so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:51Tomb Raider Anniversary
00:52The original Tomb Raider is one of the most iconic games of all time. Thanks to its mix
01:03of Indiana Jones-style adventures and a sprinkle of girl power, we got a genre-changer that brought
01:08female protagonists to the front and center. It quickly became a hit, kicking off a long-running
01:12franchise with tons of sequels, movie adaptations, and games that wouldn't have existed without it.
01:18Looking at you, Uncharted. In 2007, the game got a remake called Tomb Raider Anniversary.
01:24Fans and critics alike appreciated Anniversary for how well it paid tribute to the original classic,
01:29which is a rare win today. Don't even try to please gamers anymore. It's a losing battle.
01:33Black Mesa
01:38Looks like you're running late.
01:42This is easily the greatest fan-made project story of all time, because it went so well for
01:48the dev team. It's a full remake of the original Half-Life using the Source engine, and it seriously
01:53upgrades a ton of things to make the game feel more modern. The Zen levels especially are a huge
01:58improvement. One cool example of how well it turned out, Dario Casale, one of the original
02:03Half-Life level designers started replaying the classic version, but ended up switching to Black
02:07Mesa and stuck with that all the way through. When a dev from the original prefers the remake,
02:12you know you nailed it. That's like Shakespeare watching Romeo and Juliet and going,
02:17ah, f**k this, let's watch West Side Story. That joke is specifically for the three theater fans who
02:22are watching this video. It's probably not a problem. Probably. But I'm showing a small
02:28discrepancy in… well, no. It's well with an acceptable balance again. Metal Gear Solid,
02:34The Twin Snakes
02:37Don't move!
02:40So you killed the chief? You bastard!
02:43It's tough to argue that Metal Gear Solid didn't have one of the biggest influences on gaming as a whole,
02:48as it introduced story-driven cinematic experiences. Even though the gameplay was outstanding, it did
02:54become outdated quicker than most, especially once MGS2 dropped. MGS received a remake for the
02:59Nintendo GameCube in 2004 titled Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes and featured many of the enhancements
03:05made in MGS2. I will say this, Twin Snakes gets a lot of hate because of how it handled the cinematics
03:11and the new soundtrack, but when it comes to gameplay, it makes the whole experience so much fun.
03:18It changed the whole way the game could be approached, arguably for the better.
03:34Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
03:36I think if you judged a game based on financial success, you're going down a problematic path.
03:48That being said, the sales on this one particular game truly reflect its appeal and success.
03:52Crash Bandicoot played a big part in shaping what 3D platformers could be,
03:56bringing a whole new level of challenge to the genre, sometimes to a controller-crushing degree.
04:02Navigating those 3D spaces meant more ways to mess up, and the remakes didn't tone down the challenge
04:06of the original trilogy one bit. It's obvious the devs aim to stay true to the spirit of the originals
04:12while just boosting the visuals for modern consoles. The game still feels like the Crash that we know
04:17and love, and modern context did not make it any easier.
04:29Super Mario RPG
04:31Remakers, listen closely. The Super Mario RPG remake was so good because it preserved the
04:50charm and personality of the 1996 classic whilst modernizing it for today's players. It's just
04:55that simple. The updated visuals gave the world a vibrant storybook feel, and the remastered soundtrack
05:01brought fresh life to beloved tunes. Turn-based combat was refined, with new mechanics like triple
05:06moves and action commands that added depth without over-complicating the experience. Throw in some
05:10quality of life improvements and you've got a truly wonderful experience for audiences from either
05:15generation.
05:21Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green
05:33Since the 90s, the Pokemon franchise has stayed wildly popular, and players have been begging to revisit
05:38the beginnings of the franchise on the Nintendo Switch with the 2004 remake of Blue and Red,
05:43titled Fire Red and Leaf Green. In this remake, everything is brought to life in full 3D. The
05:48remake changes things up a bit by dramatically reducing random wild encounters, offering the
05:52opportunity for most fights to be completely avoidable. These quality of life improvements may
05:57not have been for die-hard fans, but it resonated with a new audience in a way that earned a spot on this list.
06:02The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening
06:09The Link's Awakening remake is so good, so, so, so, so good, and it's all because of that perfect recipe for remakes.
06:28It keeps the original Game Boy games' quirky charm, unique story, and clever dungeon design intact,
06:34while completely overhauling the visuals with a charming toy-like art style that feels fresh.
06:39Quality of life improvements? You betcha. New menus, auto-saves, and better item management all make
06:44gameplay smoother without changing the core experience. It's a faithful remake that honors the original
06:49spirit while making it more accessible and enjoyable for new fans. It's perfect.
07:01Spyro Reignited Trilogy
07:03After seeing how well Crash Bandicoot's comeback went, it was so obvious what was going to happen
07:17next. Goddamn Spyro the Dragon. Just like with Crash Bandicoot, fans can experience the original
07:22PlayStation Trilogy all over again in full HD, complete with updated visuals, a remastered soundtrack,
07:28and other modern touches. Whether you're new to the series or a long-time fan, it's a blast to play.
07:34There's no way people don't enjoy this experience. It's got such a wide appeal
07:38that anyone can pick it up and get a smile plastered across their face.
07:41After you've freed all the dragons, pass through this fancy vortex thingamajigger.
07:54Resident Evil 2
08:00Hello? Anybody there?
08:02There was no way this list was coming across my desk without Resident Evil 2 being in the top 3,
08:13and here's why. I had an experience that I don't always get to have. I got to experience this game
08:19for the first time with the remake. I'd played every single RE game except the second, and this remake
08:24was so good, so mind-blowingly effective on me, that I went back and played the PS1 entry. And guess
08:30what? I loved it as well. Capcom's survival horror series has delivered some of the best remakes out
08:35there, and it's become a standout franchise for the company. All the remakes are great,
08:40but this one really changed the rules on remakes.
08:42Chris and the other Starz members discovered that Umbrella was behind everything.
08:50Final Fantasy VII Remake
09:06From the day remakes were popularized, there has probably been no more requested video game to be
09:11remade than Final Fantasy VII. Maybe Simpsons didn't run. Anyways, Final Fantasy VII is one of the most
09:17iconic and beloved RPGs of all time. And finally, after years of teasers, spin-offs and fan speculation,
09:25Square Enix officially announced Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2015. What sets Final Fantasy VII Remake and
09:31its later second release Rebirth apart from most remakes is that it introduces elements that, and I'm
09:36going to try not to be spoil-y here, make it feel less of a remake and more of a retelling of a game in an
09:43alternate universe. This is not a beat-for-beat remake, it's the same characters and stories in a
09:48world where the currency was changed to potatoes. Alright, it's not that egregious, but Multiverse
09:52is a big part of this remake, meaning that you can still expect the unexpected. It's perfect.
