00:00You fool! You've doomed us all!
00:03We were already doomed.
00:05A quick death now or a slow one later.
00:08I'd rather die fighting.
00:10Welcome to Mojo Place and today we're looking over the times across gaming where a character,
00:16in some form or another,
00:17radically deviated from their established personality in a jarring way.
00:23Burn it.
00:27Burn it!
00:31Before we begin, we publish new content all week long,

00:40Jill Valentine, Resident Evil 5.
00:43We're in.
00:44Let's move.
00:49She's the beastly operative who took on the likes of Nemesis and Wesker,
00:53one of Starz's best who survived the Spencer Mansion.
00:56Nobody messes with Jill's sandwich.
00:59At least until RE5, where through the power of science, Jill was brainwashed into becoming Wesker's henchwoman.
01:15Yep, all because of that weird device attached to her chest, Jill went from one of the faces of the
01:20franchise,
01:21to a blonde in a skin tight body suit, who can now pull off Matrix moves.
01:25The saddest part?
01:26Her character hasn't recovered from this misstep.
01:29The closest thing we've gotten was getting to relive her glory days in the Resident Evil 3 remake.
01:33Chris.
01:37I'm so sorry.
01:39Penelope.
01:40Sly Cooper.
01:41Thieves in Time.
01:43Why thank you, Gallus.
01:45I've been looking all over for that.
01:48Outside of the ridiculous load times, the biggest rug pull this fourth mainline entry through our way was what they
01:54did to Penelope.
01:55Sure, she wasn't main character material, but throughout Sly 3 she became a fun and valuable member of the gang.
02:01Not only offering tech support, but even striking up a potentially romantic relationship with Bentley.
02:07You can do other stuff.
02:08Sly can't rewire a satellite to write ASCII code.
02:12Sly can't even spell ASCII.
02:14So, all's well that ends well, right?
02:16Apparently not.
02:17Since one game later, Penelope is easily looped into betraying the team and becoming a career criminal.
02:23Purely motivated by money.
02:26Which seems so...unnecessary.
02:28RIP Bentley's love life.
02:30We don't have to do it like this.
02:33Oh, I think we do.
02:34It's time to cut some strings.
02:37For good.
02:38Master Chief.
02:39Halo 5.
02:40Guardians.
02:41Cortana's our concern now, sir.
02:44Like hell she is.
02:49The Chief being gun-ho about recovering Cortana and not letting anyone get in his way?
02:54That's pretty on brand for the Spartan.
02:56No notes needed.
02:57The problems start to arise when Locke enters the picture.
03:01The Deuteragonist who spends most of the game hunting the Chief down on account of him going AWOL.
03:06Something he nearly accomplishes, since Halo 5 drastically reduces Master Chief's combat prowess.
03:21Watching him trade fisticuffs with Locke is painful to watch.
03:25The marketing didn't help either, since all the way leading up to the game's release they painted the Chief as
03:30gone to the dark side and a threat to humanity.
03:33Jeez, Guardians really dropped the ball with this one.
03:36But now I must save us.
03:38From you.
03:41The Last of Us Part 2.
03:50Whether you think Joel's decision to murder the Fireflies to save Ellie's life, and as a consequence potentially destroy humanity's
03:57hopes for a cure, were justified or not, such bloodthirsty actions felt very much true to his character.
04:03A bitter man who refused to let the world take away another daughter.
04:07I'm not trying to.
04:09I was supposed to die in that hospital.
04:10We knew there would be consequences in the sequel, and we couldn't wait to experience them.
04:15At least until Joel was killed off in the opening hours, caught completely unaware.
04:20Joel not surviving Part 2 felt like an inevitability, but the way it was handled had an air of cheapness
04:26about it.
04:27Especially when the rest of his and Ellie's development are told through flashbacks.
04:33You don't get to rush this.
04:37Viconia Devere, Baldur's Gate 3.
04:40My name.
04:41Mother Superior.
04:44Viconia Devere.
04:46You still have the wits to recognize your betters.
04:49We know, we know, and we agree.
04:51Baldur's Gate 3 is a masterpiece whose writing and characters raise the bar for the entire industry.
04:57That hasn't changed one iota.
04:59There are, however, a few die-hard fans of the original Baldur's Gate games out there who might feel a
05:05little miffed about the portrayal of a certain drow.
05:07For those who don't know, Viconia Devere was a companion and possible romance back in Baldur's Gate 1 and 2.
05:13Her unwillingness to kill innocents in the name of her former goddess gave her some nuance.
05:18So for her to become a heartless Mother Superior willing to kill Shadowheart, the girl she both kidnapped and raised
05:24out of pure spite, felt like a step backwards.
05:27I must keep her faith alive in mortal hearts. I must defend her ways, lead her children, stop all threats.
05:38Frank West, Dead Rising 4.
05:40I'm a reporter Vic, that's what I do, I report. And if you can't do the same, if you can't
05:45take yourself out of the picture, then you should get the hell out of here.
05:48Fans who had been praying for another installment in this zombie-killing saga, as well as the return of its
05:53original protagonist, were given one hell of a rude awakening when Dead Rising 4 turned out to be nothing more
05:59than a fat lump of coal.
06:01A radical change in appearance is one thing, but what really got everyone's goat was that Frank's personality got a
06:07transplant.
06:07What I'm doing.
06:08And I'm not torturing a woman for a quote while a bunch of trigger-happy jarheads guard the door. I'm
06:13not doing that either.
06:14Get me out of here.
06:16Shut up.
06:16Gone was the endearingly hard-boiled reporter taking on the ridiculousness of an undead insurgents. Now, he's just some obnoxious,
06:24jaded, wannabe tough guy.
06:25There's a reason long-term fans started calling him Hank East.
06:30You took my story, and now you've blown up my favourite camera.
06:36So be it. Frank West was a zombie lord.
06:39Yuna, Final Fantasy X-2.
06:42What can I do for you?
06:46There's so much to love about Yuna in Final Fantasy X.
06:49She's burdened by enormous responsibility, constantly sacrifices her own happiness and safety for the sake of her people,
06:56and somehow finds a way to hold on to hope, even in the midst of her doomed romance with Tidus.
07:02So after all that, what direction does her life take?
07:05She becomes a pop star.
07:07A pop star.
07:18Look, Yuna deserves all the joy in the world after what she's been through, but to go from a high
07:23summoner to a stadium seller, like she's Fira's version of Taylor Swift, just feels jarring on every conceivable level.
07:37Alex Mercer, Prototype 2.
07:40The virus goes too, right?
07:45All of it.
07:48It's in the plan.
07:50Granted, this walking bioweapon wasn't exactly the deepest of characters.
07:54He was an amnesiac driven edgelord chasing down a government conspiracy and taking out anyone who got in his way.
08:00He was ruthless, but in his quiet moments seemed like a decent sort.
08:04Definitely not the kind of guy who would trigger a man-made plague in an effort to destroy and remake
08:09humanity.
08:10Alas, that's the direction they went with in the sequel.
08:13Humanity is stagnant, dying.
08:17I would give it one body, one mind.
08:20After the first game ended with the wacky twist of Mercer being evil all along, Prototype 2 turned him into
08:27a boring, bland bad guy without a shred of intrigue.
08:30That's Prototype 2 in a nutshell.
08:32So now the only thing standing between me and Earth's true destiny is you.
08:38Dante, DMC, Devil May Cry.
08:42Shit, back in limbo.
08:46Bad day for a hangover.
08:49Time has certainly afforded this reinvention of the classic Devil May Cry story the chance to build a cult following.
08:54Mainly due to its combat, weapon choice and the willingness to try something different.
08:58That being said, everyone stands in agreement that this new take on Dante didn't work.
09:05At all.
09:06You make quite the team.
09:10I'm stronger.
09:11I'm smarter.
09:12I'm better looking.
09:14Instead of a cocky, pizza-loving badass who hides any pain with jokes and effortless charm, Ninja Theory's version of
09:21Dante comes across as whiny, try-hard and lacking the fun associated with his namesake.
09:27More cringe than cool.
09:28We applaud them for taking a risk, but there wasn't a hope in hell this guy was going to overshadow
09:34the original son of Sparda.
09:40Not in a million years.
09:44Samus Aran, Metroid, Other M.
09:47I had been reliving the tragic moments of my recent past.
09:52Thanks to the hyper beam, which was given to me somehow by the baby.
09:57She's one of the most recognizable and beloved characters under the Nintendo banner.
10:02Not to mention one of the first examples of a leading female character in gaming.
10:07Sure, she's never been one for words, but when roaming the galaxy taking down alien pirates, our hyper beam speaks
10:12louder.
10:13Other M wanted to dive deeper, explore the woman beneath the armour, and bring a tad more characterisation to Samus.
10:19On paper, it's not a bad idea.
10:22In execution, holy mother brain was it a disaster.
10:26I wondered if this too was a result of the power the baby gave me.
10:30Other M's seem to confuse vulnerability for submissiveness.
10:34Samus not only gets bossed around, but left shaking in her boots whenever she encounters an enemy.
10:39Hey guy, Samus may be something of a blank canvas in terms of emotionality, but if there's one thing that's
10:45been absolute since her inception,
10:47she strikes fear into the hearts of her enemies, not the other way around.
10:52And for the first time, I gave him a thumbs up, just in case he was watching over me.
11:01Which video game character do you think was done the dirtiest? Let us know in the comments.
