00:01It seems that reports of my survival have been greatly exaggerated.
00:07Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're getting in the mud and seeing who we find.
00:11One of the most compelling character tropes is someone with nothing to lose, someone who's seen too much, someone who's
00:18broken.
00:18These are the 10 most broken video game protagonists. Let's go.
00:23Before we continue, we publish content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get
00:29notified of our latest videos.
00:31The Dark Urge Baldur's Gate 3
00:34I saw you on the ship, strutting about whilst I was trapped in that port.
00:47What did you and those tentacled freaks do to me?
00:51The Dark Urge in Baldur's Gate 3 is easily one of the most mentally broken characters in the entire game,
00:56and that's kind of the whole point.
00:58Unlike a normal custom character, you start with no memory of who you are, but you're constantly hit with violent
01:03thoughts and impulses that push you towards doing horrific things.
01:06It's not just flavour either, you can straight up lose control and act on those urges, which makes the whole
01:11experience feel unsettling.
01:13What really makes the character disturbing is their past.
01:17Over time, it's revealed that the Dark Urge isn't just a bit evil, they make evil nervous.
01:22They're a bullspawn, meaning they were created by the god of murder and their entire existence is tied to killing
01:27and chaos.
01:28That's textbook broken.
01:29Nazelle has a dangerous look in her eyes.
01:32Let's just hope she reserves those impulses for any common foes.
01:36Cloud Final Fantasy 7
01:51Sephiroth might be the poster villain of Final Fantasy 7, but Cloud is honestly just as messed up, just in
01:56a very different way.
01:57Instead of snapping and burning everything down, Cloud completely breaks mentally and builds a fake version of himself to cope.
02:04And we all somehow forgot this.
02:06The guy is not doing well.
02:08After everything that happens with Shinra, Zack and Sephiroth, he can't handle the truth, so his mind basically rewrites his
02:13own life.
02:14He starts believing he was this confident soldier hero, when in reality, that identity belongs to someone else.
02:21The scary part is how convincing it is.
02:23Cloud isn't pretending.
02:24He genuinely believes the lie, and it affects everyone around him.
02:28Scary stuff, Cloud.
02:29Go to therapy.
02:38Max Payne, Max Payne series.
02:41They were all dead.
02:42The final gunshot was an exclamation mark to everything that had led to this point.
02:47I released my finger from the trigger, and then it was over.
02:52The Max Payne trilogy is packed with that dark, neo-noir vibe, mixed with stylish gunplay.
02:58It's also packed with trauma.
03:00So much goddamn trauma.
03:01What really makes Max stand out as a broken character is what he goes through right at the start.
03:06His wife Michelle and baby daughter are murdered, and that moment basically defines everything that follows.
03:12The entire game becomes a revenge story, but it's not clean or heroic.
03:16It's messy, painful, and filled with regret.
03:19The nightmare sequences he experiences are unsettling, showing just how broken he is mentally.
03:24Max isn't a likable character in the usual sense.
03:27He's bitter, he drinks too much, and has a short fuse, but that's exactly why he works.
03:38Senua Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice
04:00In Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice, players step into the shoes of Senua, a deeply troubled warrior on a journey to save
04:07the soul of her lost lover.
04:08Set in a world inspired by Norse and Celtic mythology, the game blurs the line between reality and what's happening
04:14inside her mind.
04:15Senua believes she's cursed, and as you play, it becomes clear that a lot of what she's facing is her
04:19own mental state.
04:21The game represents this through something called the darkness, which ties directly into her psychosis.
04:26Throughout the journey, Senua constantly hears voices known as the Furies commenting on everything she does.
04:31Sometimes they help, sometimes they make things worse.
04:33And it highlights how fractured her mind actually is, eventually making it difficult to discern what is reality and what
04:39isn't.
04:40I don't know.
04:48I believe in you.
04:53You know that.
04:57There's a piece of toilet paper, or is it cleaning tissue?
05:01No, it's toilet paper.
05:03Disco Elysium is one of those games that feels completely different from everything else that came before.
05:07Instead of focusing on combat, it puts all its energy into storytelling and character, and that's where it really shines.
05:13You play as a detective who's so drunk, he's basically wiped his own memory, waking up with no idea who
05:19he is or what he's supposed to be doing.
05:20From there, you're thrown into a murder investigation.
05:23Easy to do with a hangover.
05:25Your character is anything but stable.
05:27He's dealing with addiction, identity issues, and a whole mess of psychological problems that constantly affect how you play.
05:33The most interesting part is how the game presents Harry's mind.
05:37His thoughts, emotions, and instincts all talk to him like separate voices, almost like characters of their own.
05:43It's not just Harry that's broken, they're all broken.
05:45It's an ensemble of broken.
05:48You dropped this.
05:49Are you okay to proceed?
05:54Good.
05:55Jacket from Hotline Miami is one of the most mentally messed up characters in gaming, period.
06:09And the game doesn't take long to show you.
06:11On the surface, he's just a guy taking mysterious phone calls that tell him to go out and kill people.
06:16And for some reason, he just does it.
06:18No questions, no hesitation.
06:20That alone already feels off, but it only gets worse the more you play.
06:23As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Jacket isn't fully grounded in reality.
06:28He has strange visions, talks to masked figures that may or may not exist, and experiences events that blur the
06:34line between what's real and what's in his head.
06:36You're never completely sure what actually is happening, and what makes everything feel unsettling is just that.
06:42Why is this happening?
06:44Where is the motivation?
06:45What the hell is actually going on right now?
06:52Kratos, God of War series.
07:06Kratos in the God of War series is a completely different kind of broken, both in the OG series and
07:13the current games.
07:13In the original games, his life was already full of tragedy, losing his brother as a child, and then, in
07:18one of the worst moments in gaming, unknowingly killing his own wife and daughter.
07:22That's what turned him into the rage-fueled monster players remember, tearing through the gods of Olympus without hesitation.
07:29But by the time we see him again in God of War 2018, that version of Kratos is gone, or
07:34at least buried.
07:35He's older, quieter, and trying to live a different life.
07:38Still, the pain never really leaves him.
07:40Right at the start, he loses his wife again, this time to illness, leaving him to raise Atreus on his
07:46own.
07:47Can the guy get a break?
07:51Oh, there do they call to me.
07:54Joel Miller, The Last of Us.
08:05You mumble in your sleep.
08:08I hate bad dreams.
08:10Joel from The Last of Us is one of those characters who feels completely shaped by trauma.
08:15Right from the start of the apocalypse, where it looks like you've made it to safety, a soldier opens fire,
08:19and Joel is forced to watch Sarah, his daughter, die in his arms.
08:23That moment basically defines who he becomes.
08:25Years later, Joel is colder, harsher, and way more guarded.
08:28He's not the same person, and honestly, it makes sense.
08:31He keeps people at a distance, doesn't trust easily, and just focuses on surviving.
08:35When Ellie comes into the picture, you can see that internal struggle straight away, and watching this relationship form, good
08:43God, what a journey.
08:44Because the truth is, I would just be more scared.
08:50You're right.
08:53You're not my daughter.
08:56James Silent Hill 2
09:13Silent Hill 2 is often called one of the best games ever made, and a big reason for that is
09:17its story.
09:18The atmosphere is heavy.
09:19It's thick.
09:20The horror feels personal, and everything about the town just feels off.
09:24You play as James, who seems like a normal guy at first, heading to Silent Hill after getting a letter
09:28from his supposedly dead wife.
09:29All normal events.
09:31Sounds simple enough.
09:32But as things go on, it becomes clear something isn't right.
09:35The monsters, the environments, even the people you meet, all feel tied to something deeper.
09:40Then, the truth hits.
09:42James isn't just some grieving husband.
09:44He's hiding something from himself.
09:46Turns out, Silent Hill isn't just a place.
09:48It's a reflection of his mind.
09:51And James didn't just come to find his wife.
09:53He came to face what he did to her.
10:09I'm ready.
10:11Martin Walker Spec Ops The Line.
10:13That was six months ago.
10:17Then, two weeks ago, we picked up this transmission.
10:21If you want a story that starts one way, only to unfold into something completely dark, look no further than
10:26Spec Ops The Line.
10:27You play as Captain Martin Walker, who's sent into a ruined Dubai to find survivors and figure out what happened
10:34to a missing unit led by Colonel Conrad.
10:36Find Conrad, stop whatever's going on, get out.
10:39Simple, right?
10:40But things spiral almost immediately.
10:43Walker becomes convinced that Conrad had gone rogue and is committing terrible acts.
10:47So he pushes forward, making more and more extreme decisions for the greater good.
10:51The problem is, the further he goes, the worse things get.
10:54He ignores his team, crosses lines he shouldn't, and ends up causing massive destruction along the way.
11:00By the end, the truth hits hard.
11:02Conrad isn't even real.
11:03He's just a hallucination, a way for Walker to cope with what he's done.
11:08Classic reveal.
11:24It seems that reports of my survival have been greatly exaggerated.
