00:00What the hell are you doing here?
00:03I think I'd let you do this on your own.
00:06Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're working through our trauma as we break down the deaths in video games that
00:11left us scarred, shocked, and broken.
00:14What are you doing? Let's kill her!
00:19Kill me! Why do you want to kill me?
00:22Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:27videos.
00:30Lucy, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood.
00:32If it were up to me, you'd take more breaks.
00:35Good thing the fate of the world doesn't rest on your shoulders.
00:37Working as a double agent within Abstergo, Lucy was the only reason Desmond made it out of the facility alive.
00:44With the answers they'd been so desperately pursuing finally within their reach,
00:48Desmond, Lucy, and the rest of the team are introduced to Juno, the unexpected antagonist of the early AC games.
00:54Believing the Apple of Eden might finally give them the answers they seek,
00:58Desmond and the rest of his companions are frozen as Juno continues to speak directly to Desmond.
01:04She uses the Apple to take control of Desmond and forces him to use the hidden blade to kill Lucy
01:09despite Desmond's attempts to fight back.
01:11Just as credits roll, Desmond and Lucy collapse and players are left with even more questions and answers buried so
01:18deep,
01:18Many fans never found out Lucy was a triple agent working with the Templars.
01:23It is done. The way lies all before you.
01:28Eli Vance, Half-Life 2 Episode 2.
01:31Dad, prepare for unforeseen consequences.
01:36What did you say?
01:37One of the few scientists to make it out of Black Mesa, Eli was not only a familiar face but
01:43often times the voice of reason throughout the events of Half-Life 2.
01:47Along with his daughter Alex, Eli was the only constant in Gordon's journey, guiding him from one objective to the
01:53next in their fight against the Combine.
01:55So naturally, right when things appear to be turning a corner, tragedy isn't far behind.
02:01As Alex and Gordon prepare to head north for the Borealis, two Combine advisors break in and restrain them using
02:08their abilities.
02:09Alex and Gordon are forced to watch in horror as one of the advisors kills Eli in front of them,
02:14both helpless to do anything.
02:16Eli's last words begging Alex to look away haunted players for almost 20 years until the event was undone with
02:23the time-bending conclusion of Half-Life Alyx.
02:31Jesse, The Last of Us Part 2.
02:34Tell me you didn't come alone.
02:37Give me shit about it later.
02:40As if losing Joel wasn't already devastating enough for those who managed to avoid having it spoiled for them, Jesse's
02:47shocking and unexpected death was arguably more surprising due to the lack of build-up to the event.
02:53Longtime companion and friend, we'd learned more about Jesse and coupled with Dina's pregnancy, the group had finally decided it
03:00was time to call it quits and head home.
03:02However, all of Eli's murdering and mayhem didn't go unnoticed, and when Abby came looking for revenge of her own,
03:09Jesse was the first through the door and walked right into a bullet, killing him instantly.
03:14This sudden and unexpected death shocked not only players, but Eli as well who could only stare at Jesse's lifeless
03:21body, completely helpless.
03:23Staring face to face with the consequences of her actions.
03:27We let you both live.
03:29And you wasted it!
03:31Cutie the elephant.
03:33It takes two.
03:34We don't wanna kill you!
03:35We just kinda have to!
03:37Just a little bit!
03:38But I'm Cutie the loving elephant!
03:41I love Rose!
03:43And Rose loves me!
03:45I don't want to die!
03:47After being turned into toys by their daughter's tears over their impending divorce, main characters Cody and May will do
03:54anything to become human again.
03:56Even commit senseless murder.
03:58Believing that because their daughter's tears turned them into dolls, naturally more tears would turn them back, they set their
04:04sights on killing their daughter's favorite toy, Cutie the elephant.
04:08Their plan is made all the worse by them openly discussing the elephant's impending murder directly in front of her,
04:15mercilessly chasing her as she runs away.
04:18You know, to avoid the murder.
04:20Through a series of particularly uncute cuties, Cutie is mercilessly pulled apart, all while pleading for her life.
04:28And it was all for nothing as instead of turning human again, the parents instead set their daughter up for
04:34years of counseling.
04:35Honestly, we can still hear her screams.
04:39Joseph, you know this game is rated T for Teen, right? Not T for Trauma?
04:44You don't have to do this! I love Rose!
04:51What?!
04:54Halo Reach
04:56So...it's gonna be like mine.
05:02Well...I got good news and bad news.
05:04Given the prequel nature of Halo Reach, and just from a cursory knowledge players had about the planet's fate,
05:10and through intense missions and bonding experiences designed expertly by Bungie to reinforce the horrors and unpredictability of conflict,
05:18each death hit like a ton of bricks as we lost one squadmate after another during the Covenant's assault on
05:24the planet Reach.
05:25Yet, most of these losses revolved around some kind of build-up,
05:29letting us know someone was about to make the ultimate sacrifice or be killed before a mission's end.
05:34It's this complete lack of expectation that makes Cat's death all the worse.
05:39By all accounts, Cat was an extremely capable Spartan, and her death by a single needler shot mid-sentence was
05:45so unexpected,
05:46we wouldn't blame you if you audibly screamed when it happened.
05:50All she needed was another moment or two for her shields to recharge.
05:54Where does he get off calling a demolition a priority one?
06:01Dom, Gears of War 3
06:03I'll see you all again one day.
06:07Look, Marcus is busy saving the world again, so I gotta be there for him.
06:13Not just your brother-in-arms, but brother through bond,
06:16Dom had been by Marcus's side from the very beginning of the Locust invasion.
06:21Over time, we learned about and experienced the tragic loss of his wife and kids,
06:25but through it all, Dom always had ours and Marcus's back.
06:29During an ambush, and with no clear way out, Dom made the ultimate sacrifice and gave his life to save
06:36Marcus and the others.
06:37Driving a tanker into the middle of the battle and killing the Locusts and the Lambent to give his friends
06:42and family the chance to live.
06:44Calling out to Maria as he finally made his journey to see her again,
06:48and the subsequent realization by Baird and Cole that something terrible had happened to Dom,
06:53remains one of the most heartbreaking moments in the entire series.
06:57And we're still just as torn up about it today as we were back in 2011.
07:02Marcus! He's gone! He's gone! There's nothing you can do! Stop it!
07:07Get off me! God damn it! Let me get him out of there!
07:12Morden Solis, Mass Effect 3.
07:14Let's make sure we all get out of here alive. We're gonna have one hell of a story to tell.
07:18Morden instantly became a fan-favorite character upon his introduction in Mass Effect 2.
07:24The fast-talking Solarian was immediately charming with his no-nonsense scientific approach to the world,
07:29but over time, through the players' interactions with him,
07:32he began to soften and allow his emotions to drive his actions.
07:36The creator of the Genophage, which crippled the Krogan's population,
07:39Morden deeply regretted his involvement and sought to undo his mistake.
07:43However, the rest of the Solarian scientific community attempts to sabotage these plans,
07:48and Morden is forced to sacrifice himself to ensure the cure's distribution.
07:52While it is technically possible to prevent Morden's death,
07:55most players unaware of his upcoming sacrifice were likely hoping for some kind of last-minute escape
08:00for their favorite Solarian scientist, and his final communication is quintessential Morden.
08:05I'm sorry.
08:06I'm not. Had to be me.
08:12Someone else might have gotten it wrong.
08:14Brock, God of War Ragnarok.
08:16I don't have all my soul, bitch.
08:19The blessing wouldn't mean squat.
08:20It is the nature of a thing that matters, not its form.
08:26The gruff and foul-mouthed dwarf is one of the first companions Kratos and Atreus meet in God of War
08:312018,
08:32and along with his brother Sindri, become part of an unconventional family for the father and son.
08:37Throughout the events of Ragnarok,
08:39Brock is immediately suspicious of Tyr's presence in his home,
08:43and isn't shy about sharing his concerns.
08:45Finally, as his accusations and suspicions become increasingly more direct,
08:50Tyr reveals himself to be Odin in disguise,
08:53and brutally stabs the blue dwarf in an attempt to silence him for good.
08:57Hey! I'm talking to you!
09:00You never shut up!
09:04Brock!
09:06Brock's death wasn't only unexpected,
09:08it marked a dramatic turning point in Kratos' relationship with Sindri,
09:12and even with their final farewell at Brock's funeral,
09:16Sindri makes it clear things likely won't ever be the same again.
09:19And just like Brock's riddle,
09:21his loss left a hole in players that nothing can ever fill.
09:24A hole.
09:31What?
09:33Gets bigger, the more you take away.
09:36Sean, Red Dead Redemption 2.
09:38Well, I'm sorry to have kept you.
09:40Come on, let's get going.
09:43Fans already knew many of the Vanderland gang
09:45weren't going to make it out alive
09:47if they'd already played the original Red Dead Redemption,
09:50but through the game's impeccable writing and world-building,
09:53players couldn't help but fall in love
09:54with the many distinct members of their party.
09:57In a game full of backstabbing and double-crosses,
10:00eventually the gang's luck would run out.
10:02More than it already had anyways.
10:04This all came to a head during a trip to Rhodes,
10:07where two families that the gang are simultaneously working for turn on them.
10:11Tensions were already high upon entering the town,
10:14but it was the completely unexpected headshot
10:16that instantly killed Sean
10:17that is the most jaw-dropping surprise out of the entire game.
10:21This don't feel right.
10:23Now it don't feel right?
10:24I could've told you...
10:27Sean isn't the only one to lose their life unexpectedly,
10:30but his death is without a doubt the most shocking.
10:38He was a good kid.
10:39Aerith, Final Fantasy VII.
10:41While her death might be well-known today,
10:44it's difficult to explain just how traumatizing this was
10:47for first-time players back in 1997.
10:50The little flower seller had endeared herself to players
10:52with her charming personality and upbeat demeanor.
10:55Learning that she was one of the last remaining ancients was shocking enough,
10:59but finally finding her praying in a temple in the lost city of Cetra,
11:03just as Sephiroth descended from above,
11:06driving his sword through her was beyond devastating.
11:09Watching her lifeless body cradled in Cloud's arms as Sephiroth monologued
11:13was so traumatizing,
11:15it's likely most players didn't even pay any attention
11:18to what Sephiroth was even saying during their first playthrough.
11:21Aerith's death had such an effect on players
11:23that even decades later,
11:25fans have been desperately looking for ways
11:27to canonically resurrect her in the game.
11:30Which character's death sent you to therapy,
11:32and have you ever gotten over it?
11:35Share your heartbreak down in the comments.
