00:00Damn it, I'm still in the Animus?
00:01Quite a shock you suffered out there.
00:05Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we'll be talking about 10 Assassin's Creed characters with disturbing backstories.
00:12Minor spoilers ahead for the various games in the series.
00:16Call of us!
00:18Damn!
00:19Get off of the boy!
00:21He's one of them!
00:22Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:27videos.
00:30Eivor, Varens Dottir, Assassin's Creed Valhalla.
00:33Tonight, you will be the court that unite our people.
00:40I'm so proud of you, Eivor.
00:43The start of Eivor's journey isn't too far from being a literal horror movie.
00:48During a supposed night of celebration, Eivor witnessed the brutal betrayal and destruction of their entire clan.
00:55Eivor barely managed to escape with Sigurd, but their horse takes a hit, and Eivor is sent crashing down a
01:01hill onto a frozen lake,
01:03where their horse falls through and drowns in the icy waters.
01:06Seems pretty standard for Assassin's Creed.
01:09Until a wolf attacks mere seconds later, and basically mauls Eivor.
01:13From watching your family getting betrayed and executed, to getting mauled by a wolf and nearly drowning minutes later,
01:19it's surprising Eivor shows no signs of any lingering trauma.
01:23Unless you subscribe to the theory that Eivor is schizophrenic, but that's a bit of a reach.
01:36Adewale, Assassin's Creed 4, Black Flag.
01:39By God, we pulled this one straight from the teeth of Neptune.
01:43I'm Edward.
01:45Much thanks for your aid back there.
01:47Adewale.
01:48Born into the soul-crushing environment of the Caribbean plantation,
01:52Adewale's early life was defined by the brutality of the slave trade.
01:55He didn't just seek adventure, he fought for his very humanity against a system designed to strip it away.
02:01He eventually escaped to sea together with Edward Kenway,
02:04and the bond they built together only makes Adewale's fate sting even more.
02:09With all the constant trauma surrounding him,
02:11he was driven to join the Brotherhood to try and dismantle the slave trade in the Caribbean.
02:16Unfortunately, that took a dark turn when he was hunted down and killed by Sheikh Hormak,
02:21aided by the son of his former best friend, Haytham Kenway.
02:24It's just salt in the wound at that point.
02:27Forgive me, Adewale.
02:32You dare beg forgiveness, child?
02:35Hell welcomes traitors like you.
02:38Bayek of Siwa.
02:39Assassin's Creed Origins.
02:42Bayek!
02:43I thought they just wanted to ask him a question!
02:47The origin of the Hidden Ones is rooted in a father's worst nightmare.
02:52Bayek was a Meje, protector of the people of ancient Egypt.
02:55Yet, he was powerless when a group of masked conspirators kidnapped him and his young son Kimu.
03:01In the pitch-black depths beneath the Temple of Amun,
03:04Bayek was forced into a desperate struggle for an Isu relic, which he didn't understand.
03:08Sadly, this struggle turned fatal when they tried to get away.
03:12While attempting to escape, Bayek found himself fighting with the cultists
03:15and accidentally plunged a knife into his own son's heart.
03:19The resulting trauma was so profound that it led to the dissolution of his marriage to Aya
03:24and sparked a quest for vengeance so relentless
03:26that the Brotherhood still fights the Order thousands of years later.
03:30While Ubisoft definitely has a thing for revenge stories,
03:34Bayek barely ever finds peace.
03:36I never sleep.
03:38I just wait in the shadows and I will kill you all!
03:45Subject 16.
03:46Assassin's Creed.
03:48They call me Subject 16.
03:51Listen, I don't have much time.
03:53There's something that I have to show you.
03:55Known as Subject 16, Clay Kazmierich is a story of insanity.
03:59While working as an undercover assassin at Abstergo,
04:03he was discovered and forced into the Animus for prolonged sessions by Dr. Warren Wittig.
04:07These sessions were so intense they triggered the bleeding effect,
04:11causing the memories of his ancestors to overlap with his own reality.
04:14Clay began to experience visual and auditory hallucinations of different time periods
04:20simultaneously, eventually losing his grip on his own identity.
04:24The mental strain was so severe that he used his own blood to paint cryptic symbols
04:28and messages across his room at Abstergo before taking his own life.
04:33What is a man but the sum of his memories?
04:35We are the stories we live, the tales we tell ourselves!
04:40Arno Dorian, Assassin's Creed Unity.
04:43How can I go with you, Father?
04:46Courage, my boy.
04:50You wait just here.
04:52I will return when this hand reaches the top.
04:56Arno's childhood was defined by a series of abandonments and deaths.
05:00At the age of eight, his father Charles was assassinated in the Palace of Versailles by
05:05Sheik Cormac.
05:06Left alone, Arno was adopted by Francois de la Serre,
05:10the Grand Master of the French Templars, who kept the boy's heritage a secret.
05:14Years later, Arno's failure to deliver a warning letter led directly to the murder of his surrogate father.
05:20To make matters worse, Arno was framed for the assassination and imprisoned in the Bastille.
05:25His time in prison was spent in a state of intense self-loathing,
05:29believing his own negligence had caused the deaths of both father figures in his life.
05:34He joined the Brotherhood in a desperate attempt at penance.
05:37At the same time, seeking redemption in that way kept him obsessed with his past failures.
05:42It's easy to forget how bleak Arno's story really is, even though it's constantly in your face.
05:49Arno Dorian is dead.
05:51He has been culled from this world.
05:53His sins and failures turned to dust.
05:58Tonight he is reborn.
06:00Cassandra, Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
06:02The Oracle has spoken!
06:05To prevent Sparta's fall, the child must fall first.
06:13Cassandra's Spartan upbringing ended with a traumatic betrayal orchestrated by her own family.
06:19Following a prophecy that her infant brother Alexios would cause the fall of Sparta,
06:23the Oracle ordered the child's execution.
06:26When Cassandra tried to save him, she accidentally caused the death of the priest holding the baby.
06:31In response to this perceived sacrilege and the pressure of Spartan law,
06:35her father, Nicolaios, threw her off Mount Tietos.
06:38Surviving the fall, against all odds, she was forced to flee her homeland
06:42and grew up as a mercenary on the island of Cephalonia.
06:46She spent decades believing her mother had abandoned her and that her father was a murderer.
06:51Cassandra!
06:54Cassandra!
06:57Ezio Aritore da Firenze, Assassin's Creed II.
07:00Insieme per la Vittoria!
07:03Insieme!
07:04Insieme!
07:06Silenzio, my friends!
07:07Silenzio!
07:08Ezio began his life as a wealthy and carefree nobleman in Renaissance Italy.
07:13This reality was violently shut down when a political conspiracy led to the arrest of his father,
07:18Giovanni, and his two brothers.
07:20Despite Ezio's efforts to prove their innocence with evidence provided by his father,
07:24he was betrayed by the family friend, Huberto Alberti.
07:27Ezio was forced to stand in the public square
07:30and watch as his father and brothers were executed by hanging.
07:34Overnight, Ezio had to go from a socialite to a fugitive,
07:37carrying the responsibility of protecting his traumatized mother and sister
07:41while being hunted by the city guards.
07:44I understand your desire for vengeance,
07:46but the Gonfaloniere is a powerful man.
07:49You are not a killer, Ezio.
07:50Spare me the lecture.
07:51Rado Hangaton, Assassin's Creed III
08:05Rado Hangaton, also known as Connor Kenway,
08:08witnessed the destruction of his world at an early age.
08:11In 1760, his village of Kanatay Seton was attacked by colonial forces.
08:17During the raid, he was assaulted and threatened by the Templar Charles Lee,
08:21who was searching for an Isu site.
08:23While the boy survived the encounter,
08:25he returned to his village to find it engulfed in flames.
08:28He desperately tried to save his mother, Kenetio, from their burning home,
08:32but he was pulled away as the structure collapsed,
08:35leaving her to perish in the fire.
08:36Understandably, this event left him with a lifelong hatred for Lee
08:40and a burning desire for justice.
08:49Jack the Ripper, Assassin's Creed Syndicate.
08:52I know you have more of the Ripper's letters.
08:54I told you to stay away from me.
08:56Stop publishing his letters.
08:59You've turned an unknown miscreant into a legend,
09:02and that's exactly what he wants.
09:03Before becoming history's most infamous serial killer,
09:06Jack was a young boy who saw his mother killed by Templar thugs
09:10working for Crawford Stark.
09:12The psychological trauma led to Jack getting incarcerated in the Lambeth Asylum.
09:16The institution didn't help at all.
09:19Instead, Jack was subjected to neglect and abuse that further destabilized his mind.
09:23When Jacob Fry eventually freed him and tried to train him as an assassin,
09:28Jack's fractured psyche twisted the Brotherhood's teachings.
09:31He viewed the Creed's focus on fear and shadows as a mandate for ritualistic slaughter.
09:36Jack eventually turned on Jacob, kidnapping him and embarking on a killing spree
09:40designed to purify London through terror.
09:43Jack, we can fix you.
09:47Fix me?
09:49I am the solution.
09:53Subject 4, Assassin's Creed 3.
09:56That wasn't so bad.
09:58So, you must be Desmond.
10:00Not exactly what I expected.
10:02Daniel Cross, also known as Subject 4,
10:05has perhaps the most tragic origin in the modern-day lore.
10:09As a young man, he not only suffered from substance use disorder,
10:13but also from the bleeding effect,
10:15seeing visions of his ancestor, Nikolai Orlo.
10:17He was kidnapped by Abstergo,
10:19where Warren Wittig performed neurological surgery on him.
10:23The Templars implanted a hidden psychological trigger in his brain,
10:26turning him into a sleeper agent.
10:28Daniel eventually found purpose within the Assassin's Brotherhood
10:32and was granted an audience with the Great Mentor.
10:34However, the proximity to the Mentor triggered his subconscious programming,
10:39forcing him to kill the leader of the Assassins against his own will.
10:42This led to the Great Purge,
10:44nearly destroying the Brotherhood entirely.
10:46We eventually put him out of his misery in Assassin's Creed 3,
10:50but originally the developers had intended for him to go in an even darker fashion.
10:54Get out!
