00:00Just put the gun to their head, and...
00:07Eddie?
00:09Oh, uh, hi James.
00:13Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're not just tackling the hardest levels in video games,
00:17we're tackling them again, but prettier. These are the 10 hardest levels in video game remakes.
00:22Not all of these are exclusively levels, some are just stages, or quests, or missions,
00:27and it's my list, and I'll do what I want! Okay, please watch.
00:30Before we continue, we publish content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell

00:39Fair Play Mafia Definitive Edition
00:41So that's how a regular palooka goes from cabbie to mob enforcer overnight, is it? Just dumb luck?
00:47Collective suffering has become a bonding ritual for all Mafia fans, thanks to Fair Play,
00:52the infamous mission where Tommy Angelo has to quietly sabotage a rival's car,
00:56and then immediately pretend he's a professional racer at the Lost Heaven Grand Prix.
01:01A task that was already legendary for breaking controllers in the original game,
01:05and has somehow returned even angrier in the remake.
01:08With modern players discovering that time has healed nothing, and actually made it worse,
01:12Redditors trade war stories about spending multiple hours on classic difficulty,
01:16while their sanity slowly leaves their body.
01:18With comments ranging from furious vents about being f***ing bothered after three hours,
01:23two solemn declarations that this is genuinely the hardest mission they've ever attempted in any game,
01:28ever.
01:28Fair Play isn't just a hard mission, it's a test of anger management.
01:41The gallery's looking comfortable at first, with the tech closing in behind.
01:48Eagle's Tower, The Legend of Zelda, Link's Awakening
01:57Ask anyone who's played The Legend of Zelda, Link's Awakening,
01:59and they'll probably agree that Eagle's Tower isn't as cute as the rest of the game,
02:03it's just mean.
02:04Between juggling red and blue switches, smashing pillars with the iron ball,
02:08and dealing with platforming that feels designed to punish impatience,
02:11the dungeon turns into a full-blown endurance trial,
02:13all leading up to the fight with the evil Eagle,
02:16who tops things by making sure your nerves are already shot,
02:18while Turtle Rock and Face Shrine definitely get honourable mentions
02:22for being tough in their own sadistic ways,
02:24Eagle's Tower consistently stands out as the dungeon most likely to make players stop,
02:30not just the game, but gaming altogether.
02:32I nearly went outside and threw a ball,
02:34an honest-to-god ball, you guys, what the hell?
02:46The Fury Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater
02:59Extreme bosses in Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater are where the game stops being sneaky cool,
03:03and starts asking whether you've memorised the engine's soul,
03:06because on extreme difficulty, the rules quietly change from play well to play perfectly.
03:11For the pain, the fight is basically an endurance puzzle disguised as chaos,
03:16where thermal goggles are mandatory, grenades and stun grenades are your real damage dealers,
03:20and the goal isn't to outshoot him, but to constantly knock him out of the air.
03:23But the Fury?
03:25That guy makes this game feel like a real-life torture sequence.
03:29His attacks hit way too hard, and his fire fills the floor till you can barely move.
03:34Don't even get me started on trying to do it non-lethal.
03:37God help you.
03:50Toluca Prison Silent Hill 2
04:11In terms of comparing Silent Hill 2's remake to its original,
04:15a lot of players seem to rank Toluca Prison near the bottom of their list,
04:19usually arguing it doesn't quite match the original.
04:22But honestly, the real reason it rubs people the wrong way is because it's absolutely,
04:27unrelentingly brutal, since this is where Silent Hill 2 starts squeezing you for every last nerve.
04:32The wait puzzle unlocks the animal wards and turns basic progression into a slow,
04:37oppressive guessing game, while monsters crawling across the walls and near total darkness
04:41deliver what is easily the scariest sustained stretch in the entire game.
04:44The classic Free the Innocent Man puzzle also returns in the form of a gallows puzzle,
04:49once again forcing you to pick the correct victim or get swarmed by enemies.
04:53And while it's definitely more forgiving than the original Brain Melter,
04:56it still sneaks in one nasty trick on standard puzzle difficulty.
05:00But we'll let you see that for yourself.
05:09Hospital Fight Resident Evil 3
05:19We got a lovely expansion on Carlos in RE3's remake,
05:24and he has one particularly difficult section because it suddenly becomes a proper shooter,
05:28especially in hardcore mode.
05:30The hospital fight feels so punishing because it deliberately strips away every comfort the game has taught you
05:35and replaces it with pressure, limited ammo, barely any room to dodge,
05:39and waves of enemies that refuse to give you a breather,
05:41all while the game expects near-perfect movement and decision-making.
05:44F***!
05:45The pacing is relentless, and this is particularly rough when none of these elements are particularly present
05:50throughout the rest of the experience.
06:02Whitney, Pokemon HeartGold, and SoulSilver.
06:12Arguing over the hardest gym leader is basically a rite of passage,
06:15but two names almost always end up in the conversation because Pokemon Gold and Silver
06:20and their remakes somehow thought emotional damage was a valid design choice.
06:24Whitney from Goldenrod City, whose Miltank exists solely to teach players that cows are apex predators.
06:30If you wander in unprepared for this encounter, you're going to walk away feeling really rough.
06:35Whitney's fight is so infamous because it shows up early
06:37and immediately punishes you for not knowing things the game has barely explained yet.
06:42Miltank hits like a truck, stacks Roland, and uses Milk Drink to undo all your progress.
06:48Skill check? Sure.
06:50Mean? Yep.
06:57Jetta Fire Emblem Echoes Shadows of Valentia
07:01Enough talk, Jetta.
07:02I've come to judge the truth of your claims.
07:05I will meet with Milla first.
07:07Any decision I reach will come after.
07:09When doing research for this list, I found a Reddit post
07:12that perfectly sums up this boss fight from Fire Emblem Echoes.
07:16It said, and I quote,
07:17I mean seriously, can we talk about how ludicrous Jetta is as a boss?
07:22It's like poetry.
07:23This fight feels downright sadistic.
07:25The game stacks every possible disadvantage on top of each other.
07:29Jetta waddles into battle with absurdly high defense and resistance,
07:32and you can only land damage on every fourth attack.
07:35Not turn, attack.
07:36Meaning you're lucky to land meaningful damage
07:39while he parks himself in a swamp that slows you down just to rub it in.
07:42The result is brutal combat where every turn feels like you're losing ground,
07:46which isn't difficult, especially when the ground is made of mud.
07:48On T's, you will ascend Duma Tower and join me at its pinnacle.
07:55Unless you wish to lose your precious om, that is.
08:00Zone 4, Citadel of Fire, Ghosts and Goblins Resurrection.
08:15At least in this entry, the levels are meant to be incredibly hard.
08:19Zone 4, Citadel of Fire in Ghosts and Goblins Resurrection is unfair.
08:24Plain and simple.
08:25Unfair.
08:26It tests your reactions, your memory, your patience, and your personal resistance.
08:30Enemy placement becomes deliberately hostile,
08:33with fire spewing traps, flying demons, and resurrecting threats
08:37layered so that dodging one hazard almost always lines you up perfectly with another.
08:41Platforms crumble, lava limits, safe movement, and vertical sections demand precise jumps
08:46while enemies attack from offscreen.
08:48Which feels less like a challenge, and more like a sadistic game dev
08:51is just trying to send you to one of those padded rooms at the hospital.
09:02Mission 9-6-6, Crisis Core, Final Fantasy VII Reunion
09:20Are you a bit of an achievement hunter?
09:22Are you a Final Fantasy fan?
09:24Remember the achievement Divine Rule Broken from Crisis Core?
09:27You don't?
09:28That makes sense, because nobody could f***ing get it!
09:31Earning Divine Rule Broken is less an achievement, and more a test of your sanity,
09:35because it requires defeating Minerva, the secret boss which you can only even attempt
09:39by playing Mission 9-6-6.
09:43Minerva isn't difficulty in the flashy, chaotic sense, so much as she's punishingly methodical,
09:48turning the entire fight into a long, exhausting exercise in patience,
09:53while most of your time is spent dodging her relentless attacks rather than actually hitting her.
09:56Perfect timing isn't optional here, it's just the bare minimum,
10:00and every mistake is immediately corrected by Minerva in the most violent way possible.
10:05In a game where you have to beat a thousand soldiers back to back to get an achievement,
10:09it's shocking that an achievement could get worse,
10:12and the only way to get this one is by smashing out this mind-bending mission.
10:25Stage 5-2 Demon's Souls
10:31For a lot of players, Stage 5-2 feels like the absolute breaking point of Demon's Souls,
10:36to the extent that many people don't even try to play it properly and instead sprint past as much of
10:40it as possible
10:40just to escape with their sanity intact.
10:42But who'd do that?
10:44You know, who'd follow a sprinting-through YouTube guide beat for beat?
10:46Who on earth would do that?
10:48I did that.
10:49It's not that the area is badly designed, because almost nothing in this game truly is,
10:53but it is easily the least enjoyable stretch thanks to a swamp that permanently poisons you,
10:58slows your movement to a crawl,
10:59and somehow gives the local trolls zero mobility penalties at all,
11:02creating a deeply unfair slog where every step is punishment,
11:06and every fight feels stacked against you.
11:08No thanks, I'll just hammer a nail through my finger webbing.
